Dear Readers,I was reading a Proverbs 31 Ministries devotion (Proverbs31.org) the

other day and it was talking about radical obedience. Thorough, far-reaching, deep-seated, these are the kinds of meaning reflected in the word radical. When you consider your own obedience of God can you say that it is

thorough?

far-reaching?

deep-seated?

In 1 John 2 it says: 4 Whoever says, “I know Him,” but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys His word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in Him: 6 Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.

Not so much “what would Jesus do?” but more an understanding of what Jesus did! Really look at how He lived, who He loved, what He fought against, the priorities He had. This will give you the grounding to decide how to live a radically obedient life, living as Jesus did. There’s no shortcut to that, but the journey is worth it, no matter where it takes you.

God bless you abundantly as you consider your own radical obedience.

Dr Stephen Cobb

Dr. Stephen Cobb became bandmaster of The International Staff Band in 1994.

In that position he has ably followed some of The Salvation Army’s most famous con-ductors.

A music educator by profession and train-ing (his initial degrees the MA and BA (Hons) Cert-Ed), in July 2006 Dr Cobb completed the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts, in instrumental conducting, at Salford University.

Since April 2001, Dr Cobb has been serving as Territorial Music Director for the United Kingdom Territory, overseeing all aspects of SA musical activity. Prior to this appointment, the fi rst non-Offi cer member to hold the position, he worked as the United Kingdom’s Territorial Bandmaster.

His innovative leadership in SA music has brought about a renewed vigour to that great musical tradition, marked symbolically by the establishment of the Territorial Youth Band (directed by Dr Cobb), a group made up of the fi nest young players in the territory.(excerpts from SAWiki.com)

Our Band as it prepares to minister at St Cuthbert s̒ Church (March 15th) and over Band Weekend (April 5th/6th) - that the music will lead listeners and players alike into an awareness of God s̒ loving presence.

Our new leaders (from July) Majors Ian & Helen Urmston, along with their daughter, Abi.

Our guests for Café Church (March 23rd), Steve Shaw and friends from Sholing, as we enjoy their music and message in this relaxed style of worship - may our Café Church also be a vehicle to attract those who do not normally share on a Sunday evening.

Parents and children who attend ‘Parent & Toddlersʻ (Fridays) and ‘Angel Feetʻ (Thursdays) and ‘Messy Church̒ (Monthly).

Margaret has been Songster Leader for some 25 years, during which time

the Songsters have always made a signifi-cant and very often inspiring contribution to worship.

Good and thorough preparation have been the hallmarks of Mar-garet’s leadership, enabling the Songsters to bring blessing, encour-agement and challenge wherever and whenever they performed. It didn’t matter whether there were just a handful listening or a vast crowd, Margaret’s maxim was always ‘the best for The Highest’.

During Margaret’s focused and dedi-cated service, there have been many high spots; memo-rable visits to Corps around the country, such as Nottingham Memorial Halls, Leicester Castle (now South), Chatham and Bromley, as well as participation in Territorial (Royal Albert Hall) and Divisional events. The Songsters have ministered in many other locations, although two concerts in Portsmouth Cathe-dral with HM Royal Marines School of Music Band were wonderful occasions.

Then, of course, there is ‘Carols at the Kings’ where, for the last 18 years, Margaret has played such a major role, entailing endless hours in planning, preparation and rehearsal - with Margaret only ever wanting the huge crowd who attended each year to be touched by the message of Christmas.

Margaret, throughout the years, has always been totally committed - motivated by her personal relationship with the Lord, and we thank her sincerely for every sacrifice made, along with her abundant energy and enthusiasm. We give God all the glory for quality lead-ership and service, freely given in His precious name. JB

Youthful Praise

The Corps raised £351 to help our young people attend this year’s Summer Camps in an evening of YOUTHFUL PRAISE.

The programme featured Boscombe Young People’s Band (Kevin Whittingham) who commenced the meeting with Intrada, The Cornerstone. Their fine repertoire and excellent playing also included Great Big God; Whitleigh Witness; The Lord is Near and Peace Perfect Peace during which a very spiritual atmosphere was experienced.

Youthful Praise

Boscombe cornet duetists Alicia and Melissa played a faultless rendition of The Happy Warriors and Jack played a fine Tenor Horn Solo, Fur Elise which was well received. Vocalist Jared Littlewood (Winton) gave inspiring vocal solos including, Take The First Step; Bridge Over Troubled Waters; Get Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat, and in great sensitivity; I’ll Walk With God.

Southsea Singing Company (Amanda Streather) sang, with passion; Your Grace Still Amazes Me; Jesus Reigns; Silent Love and Melody of Love. Southsea YP Band played stirring renditions including Stand Up For Jesus; and Send The Fire. Compere Darren Shaw spoke on 1st Timothy 4:12; Don’t let anybody look down on you because you are young and then referred to David and Goliath where David, although young, was a spiritual giant who carried out the will of God.

The meeting concluded with a sung benediction; Give Thanks.

Y.P. Annual

The Young People’s Annual and prize-giving day morning meeting led by YPSM Cheryl Ellis commenced with a responsive Bible reading followed by prayer.

The theme was Transformation, referring to the conversion of Paul in which the Young People took part in the address.

The Singing Company sang The Potter’s Hands, the Y.P. Band played Wonderful Lord and the Songsters contributed Jesus in Me. Aneena read a Bible passage.

Café Church was the theme for the evening Young People’s Talent Night, led by Singing Company Leader Amanda Streather

whose theme, taken from Romans 8, v 28-30, was the ‘Army’ family working together, supporting each and loving each other in Jesus. The Worship Group accompanied the songs.

Y.P. AnnualThere were many individual items by the young people including the Opening prayer by Nathan and Hayden; Drum solo by Isaac; Puppets by David and Ben; Vocal Solos by Gen and April; Impressions by Isaac; Dance and Vocal by Sadie, Shannon and Kirsty.

Sunday Night Live

Southsea Citadel hosted a united Sunday Night Live of musical praise and worship with massed Bands and Songsters of Portsmouth Citadel

and Southsea Citadel.

The massed Bands set the evening off in rousing style with the March Soldiers of Christ and accompanied the opening song Send the Fire. Other Band contributions were the March Rosehill and Selection This I Know.

The massed Songsters sang With Wings as Eagles, Praise His Holy Name and Hush Now. Soloists were vocalist Angharad Muir-Davies with Fields of Gold and Bandmaster John Hanchett’s Euphonium Solo Peace.

Major Geoff Chape (CO Portsmouth) spoke from Psalm 57 and of how the soul responds to music in all aspects of life. The Closing Song, with massed Band accompaniment, was a stirring rendition of God’s Soldier. The evening of musical praise concluded with refreshments and fellowship. TM

A Film Night depicting the powerful and evocative life story of Corrie Ten Boom was held in the hall attended by 45 people

where donations raised £191 for the Big Collection. Refreshments were provided and further Big Collection fund-raising events are planned. T.M.

Big CollectionWorking for Thee -

The songwriter, Albert Orsborn, gives us encouragement to work for HIM as we collect throughout the year for BIG COLLECTION

2014: Constantly working, I will not delay, Working for Thee, working for Thee; Keeping my trust through the whole of the day, Always and only for Thee.

The first ‘standing’ supermarket at Tesco, North Harbour raised the sum of £448.30. The weather was inclement and we were grateful to be sheltered. Let me share some conversations with you:

HMS Vernon were disposing of some 40 televisions (with handsets) all in good working order. If no one wanted them they would have been dumped at the local rubbish tip! I pointed her in the direction of Portsmouth Citadel Corps.

A lady has just moved to the Portsmouth area and, as a Euphonium player, wanted to join a Salvation Army Band but didn’t want to wear uniform. I suggested that she might like to come along to band practise and see what it is all about. Perhaps a new seed planted? Watch out Melvyn!

A generous donation of £10 was given with the remark, ‘I will never forget the good work done by The Salvation Army when they helped my mother following a fall on the pavement.’

Collecting is very interesting when you think of the slogan, ‘Wher-ever there is a need, there is The Salvation Army.’

Big CollectionSince the last newsletter, there have been some amendments and additions to our standing days. They are as follows:

I am now able to confirm that we have permission from South West Trains to collect at Portsmouth Harbour, Portsmouth and southsea, Fratton and Havant Stations from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th June. I will remind you of other dates in future newsletters.

Some of you may not be able to stand still and collect, for various reasons, and whilst we, hopefully, will not be doing as much col-lecting door-to-door this September, I would not wish to discourage you from undertaking this on a smaller scale!! We therefore need as many collectors as possible for the odd hour or two on Standing Days.

I am also grateful to those who have so far raised notable amounts individually by a Corps Meal and Film Evening. As well as fund-raising, there has been a great time of fellowship. Keep the ideas coming in! We would ideally wish to increase last year’s total of £9464.69.

There is a TV advert in which a little girl answers a telephone.

After a few moments listening she finally says to the caller “youare a silly man”. She hangs up.

I have been saying those words to myself a fair bit this last month. At the end of last month a simple fall in the house landed me in hospital for three days.

However, no bones were broken, BUT the doctors discovered that I had pneumonia. Had l not been a “silly man” the pneumonia would not have been treated.

Once again we find out that God moves in a mysterious way tosort out our lives, even when it means dealing with us as a “sillyman”.
