The cricketing fra-ternity appears to be di-vided on four-day Tests. While a section offormer players have giv-en the new proposal athumbs up, most ofthem are against theidea. As an ex cricketer,I belong to the old schooland I believe that in five-day cricket, the firstday belongs to the me-dium-pacers. Testcricket itself is a test ofcharacter for a cricket-er. It’s a test for everyindividual and you aretaking that away. Thetricky final day wicketis ticklish to handle andthe bowlers have theupper hand and thebatsmen will have tostruggle to keep theirwickets in tact or go forthe runs to help the sidewin. It is really toughfight between ball andbat.

Recent reports sug-gested that the ICC’scricket committeeplans to recommendtrimming Tests to fourdays test matches andall the possibilities arebeing worked out.Present day test wick-ets are under preparedand did not last long forfive days. Most of thematches end in threedays and hence thequestion of 4 day testmatches came to fore. When India played Aus-tralia at Wankhede Sta-dium the match wasover on the third dayeven after first day’splay was almostwashed out for two ses-sions. But at a timewhen Test cricket isstruggling to attractspectators and thestands are empty, ex-citement is to bebrought through newinnovation of 90 overs4 innings games for 4days. Excitement isthere in every season. How you look at it isimportant, but itshould not be boringand the matches should

Four day test matches-A distant dream

By C K Subramaniam

not end in a tame draw. The spinners in test

match cricket maturewith age and they waitfor the pitch to deterio-rate to make the balltalk on day five. But iffour day test matchescome into play then thesurvival of star spin-ners will tested. TheInternational CricketCouncil (ICC), theworld governing body ofthe sport, is set to re-flect on the idea of mak-ing test matches fourday affairs to free up acrammed internationalcalendar and reduceplayer workload. Theold timers were not fac-ing tight playing sched-ule and felt that there

is no need of restrictingit to four day testmatches. But presentday set of players feelthe pinch and they arebeing rested for less im-portant series to pro-vide them rest and re-cuperation. It providesplayers to recover frominjuries as well.

Four days versusfive is a false debate. The spinner will be de-nied a fifth-day wicketwhich seems like part aconspiracy to drive himout of the game. Thatalone should ensure theproposal is thrown outof the window when theICC’s Cricket Commit-tee sits down to discussit. In any case, bilater-al Tests can be playedover four days, as SouthAfrica have doneagainst Zimbabwe, orEngland against Ire-land. It would be inter-esting to see if Englandand Australia play anAshes Test over fourdays. Test cricket is apeculiar sport, and itscharm lies in its pecu-liarity. Part of this liesin its duration, in thefact that teams breakfor tea, and in the man-

ner it is a series of indi-vidual contests withinthe framework of anoverall contest. No oth-er team sport has suchsustained individualcompetition within it-self.

From a purist’spoint of view and beingan admirer of Test crick-et, Sachin Ramesh Ten-dulkar thought itshould be tinkered with. The format has to beplayed in the way it hasbeen played for so manyyears in the convention-al form. A day less, ac-cording to the world’shighest run-getteracross two formats, willlead to batsmen think-ing of Tests as an ex-

tended version of limit-ed-overs cricket.

Many Tests end onthe fourth day becausethere is a fifth day avail-able. This is not as mys-tifying as it sounds. Theextra day calls forchanges in the ap-proach. The fifth day’s90 overs is not merelymathematical, it is psy-chological. The richnessof the game reveals it-self, as does the charac-ter of the players. Thelast hour 15 overs werethe most interestingthose days and playused to commence 30minutes early to providesufficient time to bowlmandatory overs in thefading light. Now with90 overs permitted in aday, the question ofmandatory overs doesnot arise. Holding on toa five days format is thebest option. This mightbe a romantic view, butwhat is sport withoutromance? Interestingly, players are in favour offive days. And fans haveno complaints. Therelies the answer in affir-mative. The writer is freelancer fromSanpada, Navi Mumbai

Public transport- Indicatorsof city’s development

The state of public transport system is a barometer indicatingextent of development of a city. If one goes by this definition, theimage of Navi Mumbai that emerges out is extremely dishearten-ing considering the deplorable state of NMMT, the public trans-port service provider in Navi Mumbai. The quantity of service ishugely deficient and the quality is abysmally poor. Not only this, tariffs have also become unaffordable. Still they are being patron-ized by local people, not out of choice but out of compulsion, asdemand is disproportionately more than the supply.

The public transport modes in Navi Mumbai- whether NMMT,BEST, ST or local trains- none have expanded proportionately tothe increase in demand on account of large scale development inNavi Mumbai during the last decade. A major fallout of this lack ofvision is increased number of personalized and hired modes oftransportation, which itself has its adverse effects. The traffic den-sity and traffic volumes have increased tremendously without cor-responding increase in arterial infrastructure and therefore thetransport system is literally creaking under pressure. There is anincrease in traffic jams and more recently, the availability of park-ing spaces has reduced drastically especially during peak hours. The environment is also victim as huge amount of exhaust is be-ing released by the increased volumes of vehicles. Another majorimpact of increased volume and density of vehicles is increase intraffic indiscipline and consequent accidents.

Unfortunately NMMT has not fared well on the expectations ofthe residents of Navi Mumbai. This is particularly unfortunate as agood public transport system contributes a lot by way of providingcheaper transport, reduction in vehicle population and consequentreduction in traffic congestion and accidents and last but not theleast in preserving the environment. It can also solve the problemof parking space. Because of its poor vision and improper man-agement, NMMT is grossly deficient in quality and quantity ofservice. Many of the nodes of Navi Mumbai are not being cateredto and frequency is erratic and the service is absolutely unreli-able. To set the things right, there are intermittent talks of priva-tizing the organisation, but unfortunately in most of the cities andcountries, the public transport is the responsibility of the State.More investment needs to be made by the State in this sector, ifthese services have to be made efficient with an aim to cater theincreased demand. Also, improved NMMT shall not only compli-ment the services being provided by railways, BEST and ST, butshall also become the indicator of development of the city of NaviMumbai.

NMMC has started a new trend of asking the residents of Navi Mumbaikars to take anoath over keeping Navi Mumbai clean. The commuters near Vashi railway station wereseen speaking over the mike, which gets displayed on the screen behind them (Photocourtesy: Ryhea George)

Mutations intwo regulatory genes ofwhite grapes turn offproduction of anthocy-anins, which are re-sponsible for the colorof purple grapes.

“Grapes are a goodsource of vitamin Kand many of the B vi-tamins”. They are alsoa good source of fiberand are relatively lowin calories.

The richest concen-trations of nutrientsand antioxidants, in-cluding resveratrol, are in the grape skinand seeds, and mostscientific studies ofgrapes have looked at

extracts of theseparts. Grapes containpowerful antioxidantsknown as polyphenols. These are thought tohave anti-inflammatoryand antioxidant proper-ties. One of these is res-veratrol. It is found inthe skins of red grapes.Another natural anti-inflammatory that oc-curs in grapes is the fla-vonoid quercetin. Stud-ies have suggested thatthis, too, may help pre-vent or slow cancergrowth.1) Heart health

The polyphenols ingrapes, such as resver-atrol have antioxidant,lipid-lowering, and anti-inflammatory proper-ties that helps to reducethe risk of cardiovascu-lar disease. They mayachieve this by prevent-ing platelet build-up andreducing bloodpressure and the risk ofirregular heartrhythms. Grapes con-tain fiber and potassi-um, both of which sup-port heart health.2) Blood pressure

Increasing potassi-um intake helps toreduce the negative ef-fects of too much sodi-um in the diet. Grapeshave a high potassiumcontent. This suggeststhey can help reduce theeffects of sodium in peo-

ple with high blood pres-sure. Fiber is importantfor maintaining ahealthy cardiovascularsystem, including hearthealth and blood pres-sure. Grapes are a goodsource of fiber.3) Constipation

Grapes contain wa-ter and fiber. These canhelp people stay hydrat-ed, keep bowel move-ments regular, and re-duce the risk of consti-pation.4) Allergies

Because of the anti-inflammatory effects ofquercetin, consumptionof grapes can help to al-leviate symptoms of al-lergies, including runnynose, watery eyes.5) Diabetes

In 2013, results of astudy published inthe BMJ suggested thatcertain fruits, but notjuices, may reduce therisk of type 2diabetes in adults. Dur-ing the study, which in-volved 187,382 partici-pants and lasted 22years, 6.5 percent of theparticipants developeddiabetes. However, thosewho consumed threeservings a week ofgrapes had a 7-percentlower risk of type 2 dia-betes compared withthose who did not.

I think college fests are the occasions when students getopportunity to interact and communicate with peers. Whileplanning any fest, students can make a note to includesocial issues on the college platform. This will create anawareness on larger scale. This New Year brought us somany national and global issues which needs to be heard. As teens and adults, our support would definitely be wel-comed. These healthy interactions will enhance interper-

sonal communication skills and make them ready for real world. Siddhi Soni, S.Y. Bcom Pillai College

FROM THE CAMPUS What in your view should be the theme for College Fests?

College fest is one of the memorable events in a stu-dent’s life as it is the time when new bonds are created, existing ones are tested and people are faced with chal-lenges which reveal their true potential.

Nikhil Thevar, SY Bsc Biotech ICL College

I believe any fest should include issues of social aware-ness and speak about the social evils going in and aroundthe society. It would be nice to see people portraying so-cial topics and then using them in plays and songs andpoems. According to me, fests are a part of college life toenjoy but including some topics that we college studentscan relate to should be added in the themes.Sheryl S George, FY BA ICL College

The event based on music genre or make it into a mini-fest with food stands, where all the streams come to-gether under one roof. The fests also help in creating agood and healthy bond with each other. Organizing acollege fest is a momentous accomplishment and the dil-igent work pays off when you see the happiness on thefaces of your mates and educators.Anjali Khanna, TY B.Com SIES College

According to me at least for once the theme of the collegefest should be ‘Current affairs’. I do agree with the factthat fest’s are supposed to be Joyous but in this waystudents will be aware about the on-going issues in theworld as well.

Yogini Mangloorkar, TY BMM Journalism Pillai College

Question for next week:

Your most memorable incident during school days?

I believe that the theme of College fests should be some-thing educational and futuristic. College fests are meantto bring out the best in students. Hence, it should besomething that not only expands their vision and cre-ativity, but also prepares them for the future. It shouldembrace the challenges faced right now and engage thestudents in working towards it in both fun and seriousways. This would educate everyone involved about the

happenings, make people aware and also bring up ideas to act on at indi-vidual levels if not at masses.

Devleena Dash, TY BMM Journalism Pillai College

CIDCO misses deadline to clear debris from Bhendkhal wetland

NAVI MUMBAI: Evenas CIDCO and Raigaddistrict collector missedthe High Court ap-pointed mangrove com-mittee deadline to clearlandfill at Bhendkhalwetland, another pieceof wetland at Navhgaris being buried in eco-sensitive Uran region, environmental istssaid.

“We have seendumper after dumperdownloading soil intothe massive wetland atNavghar, apparentlyfor a railway stationthere, with almost athird of the lake beingburied already,” saidactivist B N Kumar, director of NGO Nat-Connect Foundation.Wetlands play a majorrole in flood preventionas they absorb waterand it is sad to notesuch natural creationsare being wiped out inUran, he said.

“CIDCO is to beblamed for this scantrespect for the natureand violation of thelaws,” said Nandaku-mar Pawar, head ofShri Ekvira Aai Prat-ishtan.

The NGOs have

brought this to the at-tention of the Man-grove Committeepleading with it to savethe wetland.

The NGOs who vis-ited Bhendkhal wet-land, 150 acres ofwhich has been filledwith debris and soil, said it is shocking tosay that the MangroveMonitoring Conserva-tion Committee’s orderto clear the landfillwithin a month havebeen ignored.

The Committee di-rected at its meeting onDecember 9 to clear thedebris and instructedReliance not to under-take any constructionon the site, Pawar re-called.

“Not a single stonehas been removed fromthe site let alone

launching clearanceoperation,” said Ku-mar. Of the total about165 acres, 150 acreshas been filled in amighty hurry duringthe last Lok Sabha elec-tion period when no en-vironment officer wasavailable to monitorthe environmentalloss.

This is a seriousmatter and the Man-grove Committee musttake appropriate actionagainst the violators,he said.

Environmentalistshave already com-plained to the man-grove committee aboutthe landfill at Belpadawetland where a truckparking lot hasemerged. There is stillno action to clear theplace, Pawar said.
