LAUGHING WITHlunga adam

My ex-lover: A lyingbeauty and the beastSometimes in life there are people whocome into your personal space and leavewithout having made much of a positiveimpact, yet you find yourself missingthem. Those who have been following my

Facebook posts for a while will know thatI have a “crazy” ex-girlfriend.I’ve met a lot of girls in my life–

Different sizes, shapes and types– but thisnone was cut from a different cloth. Ifyou get my drift. We met one December four years ago,

and I could not have imagined thejourney that lay ahead.I must confess that I really loved her,

though ours was, at times, a rocky affair. When I tell people I miss being aroundher, they somehow think I still have thehots for her. Far from it.But if you were to spend a wee bit of

time in her company, especially whenshe’s imbibed a few glasses of the alebrew, you’d no doubt agree with me thatshe was some character.Such that, I think, when they invented

the word ‘unique’, they must have hadher in mind. What I find peculiar, is that the fights

kept our relationship going, and man, they could be ugly. One Sunday afternoon, as we were

chilling with her cousin and his girl-friend at some watering hole in Langa, near the taxi rank, she asked to go to thebathroom, and I also exited to the gents. She must uttered something untoward

and next I know, lost my temperament.A fight erupted, but we ended up

leaving the joint, much to the disappoint-ment and chagrin of the few otherpatrons. The fights were always about petty

stuff. For instance, one night we werewalking home from after drinks. And whilst we were at each other’s

throats, suddenly, a police van pulled upalongside. The policemen asked what was going

on.She responded thus: “This guy is my

ex-boyfriend and I don’t know what hewants from me,”, she said, selling me out.I did not know whether to laugh or cry,

but they took her home and left me tocontinue with my walk.We vmet the following day, and lo and

behold! gave me a huge hug, mutteringthat should forget about the previousnight. She had told a lie, and felt nothing

about it.She once told me that her parents were

not her “real” parents and that she was“just doing them a favour”. Whateverthat meant!I also heard from some of her friends

that she’d been telling them that thefather of her child is – wait for it – JacobZuma. One time we met a friend of hers after

we’d gone out for a movie. The friendasked her where we were coming fromand, with a straight face, she replied:“Hayi tshomi, bendisakhuphe u Lun-ga.”(...chum, I had taken my boyfriendout). This crazy chick was so entertaining,

and I sometimes think of her when thestresses of life play poker with me.In the two years I spent with her, she

made sure to follow me whenever I wentfor a drink. She never lost sight of me, soto speak. I was not even allowed to greetother girls, or even look at them! One time a particular girl called me

over to compliment me on my columns,my girl appeared from nowhere, grabbedme by the scruff and steered me awayfrom this poor woman. Can you imagine the embarrassment!Four months ago, I bumped into her at

a joint, and could not help but notice thatnothing had changed. She sat next to me and we reminisced.

Then I had to take a call outside. When Ireturned, a patron sitted in front of usasked: “Yhe bhuti, unyanisile lo sisiukuba wayeyi actress ku Yizo Yizo?”(Hey,bro, is it true she was an actress on Yizo,Yizo, a television drama). Need I saymore. She later asked me to take her home,

and as she was blabbering the wholemile, she suddenly grounded to a halt. With her hands akimbo and displaying acertain poise, she blurted: “Nguban’uMiss South Africa,”? (Who is Miss SA?).I leave it to you, dear reader, to

imagine the look in her eyes when Iresponded: “None but you, my love,”.This is the first chapter. The next

instalment will follow next week.

A Gugulethu grandmom whose housewas burned down in a devastating firefeels luck after Good Samaritans came toher aid.Diana Sigabi, 78, was left down and out

when the raging fire swallowed all her be-longs at her NY113 home in January. After months of raising funds, town-

ship tour guide Shai Mkhulungu, has se-cured funds to help the elderly citizen re-build her home.About R40 000 has been made available

by Norwegian tourists who had visitedthe home recently.Sigabi told of how terribly the fire

changed her life for the worst.“It was around 9pmwhen Iwas awoken

by people yelling that there was a fire. Iwas shocked to see that it was at myhome. The fire started in the back rooms after

one of the tenants left a burning candle,”she told City Vision. The fire left Sigabi and her two grand-

children, 6 and 2, with only the clothesthat they are wearing.“After the fire the city built a shack for

me at the back ofmyhouse but it has beenpainful to live there because I did not

know where I would get the money to fixmy house. I also did not know for howlong I would stay there,” she said.ShaiMkhulungum a congregant at Sin-

ethemba National Baptist Church, per-suaded the Norwegian tourists, after avisit to his church, to also pay the homea visit.Their huts were touched by what they

saw and offered to help.He said he had seen the devastation of

the house first hand during one of hismany trips taking tourists into the town-ship.“It was a heartbreaking to see the old

lady sitting next to her home. I askedwhat had happened and I was deeplymoved by the situation,” he recounted. At the time Mkhulungu said he wasn’t

sure how he could help Sigabi but he de-cided to invite the tourist to see the situa-tion.“I figured that it was important for visi-

tors to not only see the good side of town-ship life. They must see that some peopleface such difficulties,” he said.He told City Vision that the tourists,

just like him were deeply affected by thesituation and they made donations.Mkhulungu and the tourists have

raised enough funds to rebuild the house.

Drink and drive life dramaA radio drama series that recently hit theairwaves is causing a stir, driving over athousand people to declare that theywill notdrink and drive in future. The Aziwe Ke radio drama was launched

by leading local alcohol beverage company,Brandhouse in its aim to raise awareness of

the perils of drinking and driving.Aziwe Ke aims to tap into consumers’ am-

bitions byhighlighting howapromising fu-ture can be stripped and dreams crushed inan instant, just by choosing to drink anddrive.

Within twoweeksof beingonair, thedra-ma, which airs onUmhloboWenene, has en-couraged people to visit the campaign web-site, where they can pledge to either drinkand not drive; or drive and not drink. The drama follows the lives of university

friends Tumelo, Chippa and Richard whoregularly go out drinking over weekendsand drive home while under the influenceof alcohol. When caught by police, they bribe their

way out. The highlife goes on until onenight, they knock down an elderly commu-nity member. They try to hide their involvement in the

incident, but the truth become too hard toconceal.“It might as well be that people are able

to avoid arrest and prosecution throughbribes and corruption. But your behaviourwill one day impact on your communityand family, there will be no paying yourway out of trouble.Tumelo, Chippa and Richard realise this

the hard way after killing an old man intheir community while driving drunk.

Learners hurt in police clashesA protest in the city centre by learners froma Philippi school was stopped in its tracksafter harsh response by the police. The children wanted their voices heard

over the lack of infrastructure at theirschool.Once the pupils were outside the offices of

the Department of Education, armoured po-lice vehicle moved on them. But student leaders directed their peers

to form a human chain and to face off thepolice line. They sang struggle songs. Seconds later,

public order police (POP) officers threw twostun grenades at them.Pandemonium ruled as pupils darted up

Lower Parliament Street,.Akhona Bunzi was injured when a stun

grenade landed on her leg, ripping throughher tracksuit pants, searing the skin.Later, the police herded the learners up

Darling Street, towards Cape Town trainstation. The show of force brought to an end the

hour long standoff.Athule Baba, 18, and in matric, said that

600 students at Philippi High School had noschool building or sport fields.Their classrooms consist of shipping con-

tainers and there are no flush toilets, shesaid. The school has to “borrow” a hall from a

nearby primary school to write exams.“It becomes so unbearably hot in those

containers, and in winter we almost freezeto death,” Baba said.“We have raised this issue before, but

were ignored by the department. Our teach-ers support us, but they cannot be openabout this because they are employees of thedepartment and fear for losing their jobs.Weare not employees, we are pupils trying ourbest to get good results. Under the currentcircumstances, it is impossible,” she shared.GROUND UP

Plot seller vanishes into thin air, leaving families poorerA Langa family is asking why a man in thecentre of a fraudulent land sale to poor peo-ple has still not been arrested, while the ac-tivist who exposed him fears for her life.Portia Mpe,26, and her husband, in a des-

perate bid to find a place for her family tolive, acceptedanoffer to erect a shackatLan-gaTemporaryRelocationArea (TRA) inJan-uary.They said they paidR3,000 to a community

leader, hired a bakkie and moved their fur-niture from a backyard in Delft to Langa. But as they were building the shack, the

City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement ar-rived.Officers told Mpe that she was there un-

lawfully and threatened her with eviction ifshe continued to build. When Mpe led the officers to the man to

whom she had paid for the “right” to build,he denied ever having met her.“He just stood there, looked me squarely

in the eyes and said ‘I have never seen thiswoman in my life,” she said.Having fallen out with her Delft landlord,

the family of five now lives in cramped sur-roundingswithher sister andbrother in-lawin a small hut. These scenes were repeated this week

when nine households were evicted by LawEnforcement officers from Langa TRA onSunday and Monday.

Nosiyanda Mnyeko, 25, stood by helpless-ly on Monday morning as she watched herbuilding material carted off on the back ofa truck.Hours later she was still there, claiming

she had nowhere else to go.Mnyeko, an unemployed mother of three,

was seduced by the offer of a plot at LangaTRAbecause she couldnot afford themonth-ly rent of R400 for a shack in Kosovo inform-al settlement. But in a single morning she lost the her

entire investment in the move: R2,800 forbuilding material, R300 for bakkie hire andR1,500 for the plot.Shepaid for theplot throughan intermedi-

ary anddoesnot knowwhere themoney end-ed up.Activist and TRA resident Cindy Ketani

says all payments for plots eventually flowto a community leader and shack sellingkingpin.

Youngsters inLowerCrossroads spend theirSaturday mornings every weekend to en-gage with children in meaningful literacyprogrammes. At Kwafaku Reading Club, literacy is re-

garded as the social norm rather than it be-ing a mechanical skill. This is donewith theunderstanding of the

role of context, culture, language and powerin literacy acquisition.Furthermore, in this reading club, chil-

dren are allowed to bring their social worldto the reading club space to negotiate mean-ing and construct newknowledgewith refer-ence to what is presented in their socialworld. This view allows children to see literacy

as part of their daily life, i.e. reading signsdisplayed at the spaza shop and makingsense of the print at home and bringing thatknowledge to the club.KwaFaku-Vulindlela reading club

(KVRC)was started in 2011 byKwaFaku Pri-mary school and youth from the communityto create a communityof practice that open’sits door to children from the communityfrom different schools.

This initiative was inspired by Langa-Vu-lindlela Reading Club ran by PRAESA inLanga.

The purpose of KVRC has always been tonurture children’s love for reading, stories, writing, play and to allow children to be chil-dren again. On the one hand, the role of the reading

club space is to immerse children in goodquality exciting stories in children’s homelanguage isiXhosa and English. These stories are then deepened through

activities that bring these stories closer tochildren by making connections to otherforms of texts and developing new texts us-

ing the stories shared as a foundation. Onthe other hand volunteers’ key role is to cre-ate conducive conditions that will enablechildren to construct their literate identitiesthroughwhat they experience at the readingclub.

All these practices and volunteers beingthe reading and writing role models devel-ops children love for stories. We have been receiving good feedback

fromparents andobserving childrennew lit-erate identities that tell us about reading

and writing that has become habitual fromour children.Through them voluntary picking up a

book to read, writing for purpose and talkingabout stories, even questioning the storiesthey are told or they read. For children to become readers and start

writing meaningful text KVRC say childrenat home and in other spaces must be givenopportunities to listen to stories, be told andread stories, see adults around them readingand writing for a purpose.

Mbixane treated unfairlyby the state and the SABCA great number of South Africansexpected a great tribute to a fallenhero. To Saba Mbixane: The radio deejay

and driver of the most respected musicin our country, we say a big tree hasfallen and its a great loss for all.Saba was born and bred in the

Eastern Cape. Because of his penchantfor traditional music, he joined aradio station and his last contributionswere with the SABC radio (UmhloboWenene) where he hosted three differ-ent shows. The big hero also has contributed to

the youth developments within thecommunities. However, he carried hiswork to the young people in thecountry and was truly loved national-ly.It was a great sadness to hear a

week ago that our hero passed on, butbecause of the good work he has done,we are left to reminisce about his goodwork. He established his own music

groups, Jabulani, Amankentshane andFour by Four Cultural group.

After his passing, we expected thatthe SABC would transmit a livebroadcast to the nation. It even saddens us people who loved

the legend to hear the president rejecta request for a state funeral. The question we need to ask our-

selves and the SABC is how was SabaMbixane different from the other iconsthat have passed on?Even his memorial service was not

broadcast.Where have we gone wrong. The

SABC needs to give us answers.Mbixane deserved more honour than

just a radion broadcast. If our state and SABC will not be

able to treat all our icons the same, they should rather not broadcast anyfuneral at all.We talk of democracy, but it seems

not all are equal in the state and theSABC.Nevertheless, Rest In Peace Zaw Zaw

Elihle, Saba Ka-Mbixane, the SABCand the state notwithstanding.

more than 10 years inside, I am out oftouch with what is happening in thecommunity. I humbly ask you to send mecopies of City Vision because this news-paper contains intriguing, motivating, encouraging and eye opening news.Since I am from the Nyanga area, I

know this paper is full of news I can use.I want to use it as a compass in my lifesince I am about to get out.I hope my request will be attended in a

postive manner. I am looking forward togetting my favourite newspaper. Thankyou, may God bless you.

Police failure leads to crimeLet me kindly convey my opinion withregards to the poor state of policing inNyanga East.On Sunday we were woken up to

discover that Five people were shot andkilled just outside of one of the threemost notorious shebeens in Mau Mau.Tragic as this incident is, for those of

us who live here, we knew that it wasjust a matter of time before it became areality. This incident was not the first of its

kind. Most disappointing and frustratingis that police knew about this illegalshebeen, which operates 24 hours and didabsolutely nothing about it.Why are Nyanga police not proactive

regarding crime fighting.

Why must they always wait until livesare lost before they act decisively. In the street where the murders took

place, the local committee is on record ashaving exhausted all channels to havethis illegal shebeen closed down. There seem to be forces beyond the

committee’s control.Until the Nyanga Police start doing

their work and shutdown all these illegalshebeens where criminal activities takeplace, these horrific and unfortunatekillings will haunt our community andwe will forever be remembered as themurder capital of South Africa.

NDIKHO KWINANANyanga Safe Streets

Spare the rod, spoil the kidI remember when I was a young boy itwas a punishable offence to go out of thehouse without my parents’ permission. It was even worse if you left the house

at night. But today things have changed. You see

young kids walking in the streets atnight.Young people just kiss in the streets in

front of their elders without feeling anyguilt. When as an adult you try to advise

them against their actions, you’re callednames and hated for that.Today’s kids do not respect their

parents and elders as we used to do.I understand that times have changed,

but respect doesn’t have to change. Youngpeople smoke and drink in public and

they do not seem to care. And over the weekends they’re the

ones crowding the shebeens.Their behaviour is wrong and most of

them do not live long. They say it takes a village to raise a

child, but today you cannot disciplineyour neighbour’s child. You can hardly call your own child to

order because some of them abuse theirparents. At school the pass rates aredropping because our kids are ill-disciplined.Our kids have turned their schools into

playgrounds or battlefields. It’s time to raise kids responsibly if we

want a brighter future for them.VUMILE TENGO

Purpose in life breeds wise prospectsOne of the most profoundlife lessons is that we needto be faithful to our visionand we must value ourpurpose in life.Vision is the ability to

see beyond and above themajority. It means seeing further

than the eyes can see.You also have to be

faithful to your dreams, because a dream withoutwork is drudgery.Dreams are products of

seeds we carried in ourhearts from childhood, andthey stay with us until

adulthood.You must try to avoid

those who may sway youfrom your intended goalsand ambitions. If you lose hope, some-

how you lose the vitalitythat keeps life moving. You then lose the cour-

age to be and the qualitythat helps you go on inspite of it all. You have tobe sure of your purpose inlife and be faithful to it,then the sky will surelybecome the limit.

According to Open Streets project manag-er Rebecca Campbell, themeeting is in prep-aration for the five hour event.

“We will be sharing plans for an OpenStreets day inLangaandwearealso invitingfeedback and ideas for activities.

The Open Streets is a free communityevent that creates a temporary car-freeroute for all to enjoy the street safely for afew hours while walking, cycling or skate-boardingand touse as aplatform for art,mu-sic, drama, games, fun, recreation, econom-ic opportunities, connecting and sharing,”she said.

Thewhole of Cape Town is invited to expe-rience Langa’s street culture and heritage.

Realising hope at the festLOUISA STEYL

#Imagine is not a festival, it’s a strategy torelease hope and build leaders with integri-ty.

This is according to gospel singer, LouisBrittz, one of the people behind the #Imagi-nemovementwhich aims to inspire and con-nect young people across South Africa.

After successful #imagine Experiences inGauteng and the Western Cape in 2014, theteam are planning to take the teen camp tothree venues this year, bringing 20 000 teensand youth leaders together in fellowshipfrom Friday 10 to Sunday 12 April.

The three camps in Gauteng, the EasternCape and Bredarsdorp in theWestern Campwill be linked via social media and live web-streaming with the hope that young SouthAfricans will be able to inspire each otherand return to their communities with vision

and purpose to make a difference.“Webring thousands of young people toge-

ther to unleash their energy, connect themwith each other and to show them that theyare not alone,” Brittz says. “No matter whatpain their past may have brought them, at#Imagine we show them that there is hopeand freedom in Christ. They aren’t pris-oners of the past but pioneers of the future.”

Britzz believes that you need to start witha country’s youth in order to make a changein the country’s future.

#Imagine aims to build young leaderswith integrity, morals, compassion andfaith.

Teens attending#Imaginewill learnwors-hip, but they’ll also be given the opportunityto experience God through various activi-ties, talks and workshops.

The camp fee of R350 is a subsidised rateand covers the cost of camping and food.

Poet and actor says he ishappy to answer the callMBONGISENI MASEKO

Zama Batyi, a Xhosa praise poet and actorclaims that followinga “calling” fromhis an-cestors to be what he is today, was not mis-placed.Batyi, 41, from Crossroads also has a col-

ourful scope when it comes to art.He says, though that becoming a praise po-

et was by default.“I discovered my talent soon after I came

back from initiation school, in 1996.I had this urge to shower my mother, No-

phumzile Batyi, with praises for all she haddone for me.This also includedmybrother, Thula, who

inspired me,”.Batyi said the two inspired him a great

deal and were always there to put him inline whenever he strayed as a child.“Growing up, I started to pen some poems.

I realised this was my calling. My ancestorsalways speak to me when I am asleep,”.Batyi thenmet with Daluxolo Hoho, a per-

formance artist to whom he looked up to.He soonmade a collection of all his poems,

which he compiled into a book titled: “Int-ambane,”.The initial planwas to have the book form-

ing a syllabus in schools in the province, butthat did not happen.Batyi has since published another book

with titled Inqaka Yesihobe, in 2011.The book was followed by his latest offer-

ing titled Ingqabe, which was published lastyear.“I was given the name Ingqabe by my an-

cestors through my sleep. I did not evenknow its meaning for a long time. I then didmy research where I learnt that it meantSparrow, a family of small passerine birds.People love my poems,” he said.He writes his poems about love, political

leaders, death and many other things. He also wrote a praise poem about the late

Saba Mbixane, the radio presenter forUmhlobo Wenene FM, whose death shockedmany lovers of Mbaqanga music, recently. The poem titled Ngxatsho ke Zawa.

“He (Mbixane) inspired many people. Iwrote the poem to thank him for his goodwork. I only spoke to him telephonically andI listened to him since he first hit the air-waves years ago,” he said.Batyi wishes to get invites to gigs to per-

form his catchy poems. He has since acted inmany television pro-

grammes such as Generations , acted therole of Professor Bhengu, Scandal, pastorGola, RhythmCity, detectiveMqokeli, Intsi-ka, Zodwa, Amaza, 90 Plain Street andmanymore.Anyone who wishes to invite him to per-

form in the events or who wants to buy hisbooks can contact him on 0835037584.

Zama Batyi, 41, an Actor and Poet releasedthree books for Xhosa poems.

Gay and lesbian activistscall for “inclusive ” PrideFor 25-year-oldAphiwe Mikana from Gu-gulethu, raising awareness about what itmeans to be lesbian is more than brightlycoloured floats or a day of dancing throughcity streets.

“I don’t always feel safe walking in thestreet. The guys who sit on the corners havetold me they are going to rape me or theygrab me while I’m walking.I can’twalkhand-in-handwithagirlfriend

in the township,” a teary-eyed Mikana said.Mikana and about 50 other people danced todrum beats, chanted and held up posters ata busy intersection in Green Point on Satur-day, just before the main Pride march tookplace nearby. The protest action was organised by a

group of gay and lesbian activists who haveaccused Cape Town Pride of being “racist”and exclusionary. The on-going disputes around the Cape

Town Pride festival led the group to launchan “Alternative Inclusive Pride” last week. They hosted several events which were heldat the same time as those organised by thetwelfth annual CapeTownPride festival thisyear.Three of the group’s events, which includ-

ed seminars, parties, a movie night andtalks, were held inKhayelitsha andGugulet-hu. However, in a statement released aheadof the protest on Saturday, the group saidthey would not be boycotting the Pridemarch, but instead called for a community-drivenmovement to be involved in the plan-ning of future gay festivals.

“Kwanele! Enough with the privileged, white, gay, male images presented to us byCapeTownPride in its current form.Kwane-lewith single-struggle politics and lack of in-tersectional understanding of oppressions,”it read. Alternative Inclusive Pride protest-ers. One of the placards reads, “Your white

privilege stinks”.During the protest, Makana who also

works for the lobby group Free Gender, saidthe festival was not a true reflection of thegay community in poor areas.“I came out in high school. To this day my

parents still think I’m going through a phaseand I’ll get over it one day. That is not goingto happen. We rather want them to have events that

recognise that hate crimes are still happen-ing in the townships. “I cant say that peoplefrom Constantia don’t have issues as well, but we need to talk about it in order to putan end to hate crimes,” she said. Free Gen-der chairperson Funeka Soldaat, said theprotest ahead of the Pride march was a steptowards unifying the gay and lesbian com-munity in the province. “Protesting at theevent was the last resort for us, we’ve beenengagingwith the organisers for awhile, butthey chose not to listen,” she said. Soldaatwho is also a member of the Alternative In-clusive Pride group, said they received anoverwhelming response to their events.“The response over the past week has beenamazing.Homophobia has always been a bigissueandcultureplays abigpart in that. Themurders and assaults of lesbians in thetownships shows this. These are the issues that need to be ad-

dressed not people walking around naked inthe streets,” she said.Cape Town Pride director, Matthew van

As, rejected the groups claims, calling theirprotest racist. “I don’t agreewith themethodthey used. I find it slightly racist becausePride doesn’t see colour or gender, anyoneis welcome to get involved and you canchoose not to join in.

They were given until the 20 Decemberto add any new events to our calendar, butwe didn’t get anything.

BOXING: Former boxing champ rubs shoulders with aspirant ounchers in Langa

‘Big Daddy’ pays academy visitMANDLA MAHASHE

It was a big day for aspiring pugilists fromLanga when the Big Daddy of boxing paida visit to their academy.Nika Kumalo Boxing Academy played

host toRiddick “BigDaddy”Bowewho cameto assess the kind of facilities that youngboxers from the townships are afforded.Bowe, a former two-time world heavy-

weight champion, visited the academyat theLove Life Centre.B owe said he was happy to see that some

youths were still attracted to boxing.“It’s not only in SouthAfrica but in the US

as well that young people are less interestedin sports nowadays. We need to show them that in sports there

areways for them to not only do great thingsbut most importantly get away from pover-ty,” he shared.Poverty is one thing that Bowe would

know very well as he was born and raisedin Brooklyn, one of the roughest neighbour-hoods in New York.Bowe went to the same high school with

another champion Mike Tyson and the tworemain friends. He has spent the past threeweeks in South

Africa. He said that he was impressed withthe set up but he said that there was a lot

of room to improve on the training.“A boxer’s lungs need air so these guys

need to do a lot of running so that they don’ttire easily. If you neglect running it would be hard for

you to be nippy in the ring and if you cantavoid punches in the ring then you are out,”he said.Academy founder and former national fly-

weight champion Nika Kumalo said that itwas an honour to have Bowe at their acade-my.“He is one of the sportspeople that man-

aged to come out of a difficult environmentand make a success out of their talents. These young boxers need to know of such

stories and know that it is possible for themas well,” said Kumalo.Kumalo said that he hopes that the visit

will inspire the youngsters with the knowl-edge that they can also visit other countriesbecause of boxing.“When I was younger i also did not think

that I could visit countries such asAustraliaand the US but through sport I did.We want them to look beyond the streets

of Langa and be motivated by the possibili-ties,” he added.Kumalo started the academy in 2014 and

offers after school programmes for youngpupils from the area.
