The group of over 40 men and women from the Khanya Neighbourhood Watch, volun- teer to spend their nights patrolling Section 4 and other areas despite clear and present danger. According to them, two of their members have already been shot at and two other cheated death after being stabbed by thugs because they ‘disturbed their activities’. City Vision caught up with the group in NY6 while on the patrol to sniff out crime in the area. Donning reflective jackets, com- municating through two-way radios, armed with only knobkerries and a dogged deter- mination, the group takes over the night. “We decided to start this watch in Februa- ry 2014 after noticing that there were too many robberies in our neighbourhood. People would get attacked and stabbed by thugs during the day and no one was doing anything about it,” said Solomzi Booi, the group’s leader. Since they began their work they have confiscated many weapons from criminals as well as recovering stolen goods. This, they say, has resulted in many in their own community turning against them. “The troublemakers threaten our lives and attack our members while some community members, who are relatives of the thugs, ac- cuse us of beating people in the streets,” he said. The group also accuse members of the community of rubishing their work in news- papers by making false allegations of beat- ings. Nkosinathi Kambi was stabbed by a crimi- nal during a patrol, said though, that the ma- jority of the community appreciated their work. “As you can see people are walking freely as compared to the past where people’s cars were broken into in the middle of the day. We have been so effective at recovering stolen goods that people come to report crimes to us as if we were the police,”. During the interview, a woman approach- es the group to report that her son was steal- ing her money. Cue that. Kambi says such cases ‘ are all too often’. Nolufefe Ngcongca whose home was bro- ken into by thugs who stole a Plasma TV, a DVD player, bags, clothes and R5000 in cash, said that her family was assisted by the group to recover the items. “It happened last month and the neigh- bourhood watch assisted us with tracking the items all the way to Nyanga East where we found them. They are doing a great job and we can’t thank them enough for what they did for us.” She said that she was surprised to find out the group was willing to help even though her family home was not part of the areas that the group was operating in. Booi said that despite the bad press they get and the constant threats of attacks, they will continue to do the work because of the results. “Its 21:00 and you can see that people are free to walk to where ever they want and there a no loiters and thugs walking about in our area. There is peace and that was our goal from the beginning,” Booi concludes. The men and women from the Khanya Neighbourhood Watch put their lives at risk to provide safety for the community. Facebook face-off farce for RevZILA MKONTO

Awarofwordshas eruptedbetween the larg-er-than-life Pastor Nkomfa Mkhabileand a top business woman.

Eunice Mhonko Godze whoowns a security and a waste re-moval company, has vented herfrustration on Facebook, ac-cusing the minister of de-frauding her after a record-ing deal for blind singerswent haywire.“Myblind brother,Vukile,

is a singer andplays all kindsof music instruments . Forhis 51st birthday I wanted to

spoil him and I decided to get hismusic recorded so that he can re-lease his album.A fuming Godze said: “I shared

my wish Nkomfa who as a friendI thought I could trust, instead hehas let me down big time.”Mhonko said the saga began on

April 8 when she bought herblind brother an accordion andalso decided to “surprise himwith a CD recording.”He also sings with two other

blind people and they haveformed a group.“I then approached Nkomfa and

we decided hewould find a studioin Umtata and record a CD for theblind singers,” she said. Theblind singers then travelled toUmtata where they say theywere“rushed” into the studio withoutany rehearsal or rest after the

long stretch from Cape Town.“The y spent one day in studio and Nkom-

fa called me, saying I must send the moneybecause he was finished and everythingwent smooth andhewould giveme feedbackon his return,” she said. Her brother Vukile called and she could

hear he was “heartbroken” but was not say-ing what went wrong.Upon their arrival in Cape Town, Godze

called a meeting with the blind singers andshe was horrified to hear their story.”When they started sharing the bad expe-

rience theywent through, I could not believemy ears,” she said. They accused the pastorturnedgospel singer ill-treatment andname-calling.“They said therewere tensions but contin-

ued because they didnt want to hurt me.I have listened to the CD. What a damp

squib!Later, when confronted, he tried to defend

his actions. I informed him of his unGodlydoings, and that he had reneged on our con-tract.” According to her, she hasn’t heardfrom the pastor since.“His phone is ringingoff thehook, so i cant

get hold of him, for I want to inform him ofhis shoddy studio work,” she said.Godze added that she’d spent a lot of mon-

ey on the project. City Vision contacted pas-tor Mkhabile.“I have seen the stuff she wrote about me

on Facebook and I will sue her.” He said hislawyers had written to her to “delete” theoffending posts on Facebook and issue himwith an apology.“She is sullyingmygoodnamebut shewill

not succeed. Many before her have done soand have failed dismally.Reverend Nkomfa Mkabile is accused of wrongdoing.

The stylish Mhonko Godze says pastor short-changed a blind family member

Raging bishop demolishes roomMBONGISENI MASEKO

Cracks in a Gugulethu familyhave comeun-der sharp public scrutiny after a respectedmember of the religious and education fra-tenity has been accused by his siblings of au-tocracy and bullying.Bishop Eric Thabiso Titipana of the

Christian Assembly Gospel Church of Godand a principal at Khanyolwethu SecondarySchool inLwandle, Strand, has beenaccusedby his sister of demolishing a room she hadbuilt for her offspring at their home inNY147, Gugulethu.According to Vivian Titipana, her broth-

er, with hammer in hand, went about theirhome thrashing the room, saying theyshould have asked permission from himfirst before erecting on the family home.“The first room he demolished was unat-

tached to the house, and the second, built asan extension, he also demolished.“The rooms were built to keep my kids

safe whilst I’m working night-shift,” shesaid. An angry Titipana,48, instead arrived

armed with a pound hammer and tore intothe rooms, brick by brick, according to Vivi-an.“This has gone very far now. He said we

must ask permission from him to extend thehouse as if we do not have a say in the familyhouse. He treats us as if we are not his sis-

ters. We are tired of his bad treatment now. What does he preach in his church as a bish-op?” Vivian said.Vivian said she had spent about R7000.00

on the rooms.According to her, Titipana had moved out

of the house in 2000, just before the demise

of their father.Their mother died in 2007.It seems the man of the cloth has a frosty

relationship with his sibling.Vivian narrated a litany of allegations

against her brother, unbecoming of a manof his standing. Contacted for comment, an

unrepentant Titipana refused to answerquestions put to him by City Vision.“With due respect, I am not going to com-

ment because this is a family affair. I do notdiscuss such things with the media. It istheir right to talk to you, but I am not goingto discuss anything with you,” Titipanasaid.Titipana once appeared on Etv’s South Af-

rican Heroes programme .

Bishop Eric Thabiso Titipana, 48, is accused of treating his sisters badly after he demolished aroom they built, in Gugulethu, recently.

Determination and guts go a long wayThere is farmore toCapeTown thanTableMountain, beaches and wine, says tour-ism entrepreneur Samantha Mtinini. There is a wealth of culture and life on

the outskirts of the city that, other thanjust a glimpse, most tourists fail to see andexperience. But the Raymond Ackerman Academy

(RAA) graduate had a plan to connect thetwo, and through this dream her businesswas born. The owner andmanaging director of Go

Camissa Travel, a tourism companywhose primary focus is township tours,Samantha says her passion for the indus-try and her love for township communi-ties motivated her to start her business.“The township life is so unique. Not all tourists experience this, yet they

should. Through my tours I take visitorsof this beautiful city right into these areasto experience the way our people live,”she says. She explains that Camissa, or the place

of sweet waters is an indigenous Khoisanword describing the area around TableBay known today as the city bowl.Camissa referred to the fountains,

springs and streams found around TableMountain.“Our Cape Town is beautiful, like Cam-

issa it’s like a fountain of beauty,” shesays.Samantha was working as a tour guide

on Robben Island when she decided to en-roll in a six-month entrepreneurial devel-opment course at the RaymondAckermanAcademy at the University of Cape TownGraduate School of Business (UCT GSB).It was a decision that turned out to be oneof the best of her life.“The programme taughtmewhat I need-

ed to know. It touched on so many aspectsof business and it moulded me into thebusinesswomen I am today. I had all these

thoughts, I didn’t know where to startand how. But the programme helped mefrom A right down Z.Many doors have opened for me since

completing this course and I am eternal-ly grateful,” she says. These days Samantha facilitates town-

ship tours in Langa and Gugulethuthrough her company, tours include anAfrican cooking experience, a townshipgospel tour, township diski (social soc-cer) tour and lots more.“For us at Camissa it’s all about a cul-

tural experience and illustrating thewayof life there, a life not many peopleknow,” she says.Samantha says her business has been

doing “very well”, despite the Cape Towntourism industry being “very saturated”.She adds that it’s not always easy for

smaller companies to get a foot in thedoor.“The industry is huge, we are little fish

in a very large ocean, it’s easy to feelthreatened. But what’s important is to remember

your purpose and to press on, believe inyourself and see your dream through,”she says. “Don’t let your situation deteryou. It takes ‘90% guts and 10% capitalto start your business’.

Conman deceives Nyanga agedMBONGISENI MASEKO

The joy of collecting freebies turned sour forelders in Nyanga after it emerged that the‘’Good Samaritan’’ was, in reality a conmanmasquarading as a saint.

The man, who claimed to be a member ofthe Gift of the Givers-a disaster responseNon Governmental Organisation (NGO)- ap-proached the Place of Blessing-Indawo Yent-sikelelo, on Monday, and invited all pension-ers to come collect their goodies.

Muriel Holo, the founder of Place of Bless-ing-Indawo Yentsikelelo, said it all looked le-git when the man promised them that therewas a truck carrying a load for the eldersthat was going to arrive on Tuesday.

The elders were told to bring their IdentityDocuments (IDs).

Over 40 elders answered the call and wait-ed patiently for the truck which never ar-rived.

“We were all very happy because wethought it was going to help the elders a lot.We did not suspect anything wrong aboutthe promise.

We are now worried, because we do notknow what is he going to do with all the con-fidential information for the elders which hevanished with,”

The man first approached Bongiwe Toto,

on the street and told her that he was lookingfor any centre that was helping the elders inthe area.

Toto took him to Mthuthuzeli Joni, thechairman of the street committee.

Joni then took the man to the centre.Joni said the man promised to pay R2000

to the centre for using it as a gathering placefor the delivery of the goodies.

“He also asked us to go borrow two laptopsthat he could rent for R450 per day.

Residents were so moved by that promisewhich saw three laptops and an IPod beinggiven to the man.

He only left one laptop behind and stole allthe others,” Toto said.

Lona Ngqalana, a worker at the centre, said the man first sent her and other resi-dent to Shoperite to buy snacks and fruitsfor elders to eat while the truck was makingits way to the centre.

Ngalana said the voucher numbers that hegave them proved to be fake when they gotto the tills to pay.

The man distracted anyone who seemed tobe monitoring his movements by sendingthem to different places.

Some were sent to go look for the truckwhich was getting lost.

Hollow said the man told her that he wasgoing to buy a drink at a nearby tuck-shop

and never returned. The elders who were disappointed then

left one by one.The decoration in a small hall was the only

thing showing that there was something bigthat was planned for the day at the centrewhen City Vision arrived.

The centre runs different projects such asa crèche, after school care, soap kitchen andfood garden.

Imtiaz Sooliman, of the Gift of the Givers, advised residents to double check if some-

one claims to be sent by the organisation.“This must be a fraudster. We work

through community leaders. We come withfull branding. People can see who we are. Itis important for the community to be alertwho they deal with. If it is Gift of the Giversthere will be no doubt who we are,” Sooli-man said.

Captain Ntomboxolo Sitshitshi, commu-nication officer at Nyanga police station, said a case of theft is being investigated andno arrest has been made yet.

Bongiwe Toto, unidentified child, Muriel Holo, the founder of Place of Blessing-Indawo Yentsikelelo,Mthuthuzeli Joni, the chairman for the street committee, Lona Ngqalana, Phindiwe Gcilishe andNomantambo Mgxakaza, were left disappointed after a corn artist who promised them heavendisappeared, in Nyanga, last Tuesday. Blacks still sufferingSince South Africa proudly marketsitself as a rainbow nation, great effortis lmade to address the questions ofperennial race problems.A fragile collective identity thatdisplays a character of pretence; thatwhich behind closed doors, one’sopinion on the subject distantlydiffers. We were made to forget in order toforge a simulacrum of phoney diversi-ty, forced to hold hands while ourwounds still leaks blood of yesterdaysstruggle. Without any doubt, blacksare still enslaved under the broadercontext of democracy; by the inhuman-ity of democratic system.it is now that racial tension betweenwhites and blacks triggers socialunrest. Whites sighed with relief thatit was all over; that they were non-identical objects to the blames ofoppressing the native peoples.

However: the blood stains of yester-years victims at the arena of apart-heid, provokes the muscles of theblack masses. Our motive wasdeceived by the mass earned spectacleswith converging lenses, that showsafar utopia on near vision. Yet, theyhadn’t lost touch with forms ofsuperiority; as keenly observed by myphrase: “Once earned cruel superiori-ty, one will always demand thehonour, even in the field of just.”For too long, blacks became moresuspicious of whites behaviour;carefully scanning existence of racistattitudes that they can use to justifythe presence of apartheid’s fragmenta-tion.When are we going to fully step upto our truly collective identity? Weneed to purge our sport of racism.

Father’s letter to daughterMy dearest daughterI hope these few lines find you in goodhealth.I am all alone, quietly thinking of youand the journey ahead. It is a fact that for most parents, theonly recourse is to daily imbibe tabletsfor this depressing condition or that, caused mainly by their off-spring.I am not one of those(yet). This, I believe, is because we have anopen line of communication. At times weshed tears, but we soon set clearer goaland the problem is resolved. You sometimes make me sit up in mybed at night plotting a plan for thefuture. This is not easy for a father.A lot of sacrifice goes into raising agirl-child; am not complaining, though.I know that, ultimately, we all want tosee you succeed, the odds notwithstand-ing.You have a support structure a bunchof kids would die for. But, like allteenagers and their parents, we do notalways see eye-to-eye.In your mind, your mother seems tohave an ubiquitous presence in your life, but like all teenagers, you secretlyharbour the feeling that she were else-where.I wish to inform you that, should youshare that sentiment with parentlesschildren, you’ be shaken out of yourprotective shell. You are loved indeed. All parents want to see their childrensucceed in life. Some even have plans inplace for their wedding dresses. Themeans to achieve this are always put aspriority in the list of things to be done.Children provide a sense of purpose to allparents. We all want to shield our children fromthe harsh realities of life.As adults, our mantra has become:We’ve been there, seen that, done that. So, it a road well travelled by us.Beware!Listen attentively when spoken to.Believe me, it helps to calm the rapids. Not everyone out there will like you. Some will hate the fact that you are

well taken care off. Some will hate youbecause you are my daughter. Some willhate you for no apparent reason at all. These are inevitable, but can be avoided. There are two types of people in thisworld. Those who posses will. And thosewho live in a world created by peoplewho possess will. I recommend the firstcategory for you based on my pastexperience.Perception is reality. That is themanner of approach to life. You mustplay your positive role as a trustedambassador. Many people can’t make itpast this hurdle.I have tried to be a positive role modelin your education. I know you do have asense of pride to have such a father. Ihad decided to take you along on mygraduation day for my second law degree. My late dear mother (may her spiritalways prevail) and your elder sisterwere also present. The three mostimportant people in my life! I stilltreasure that day as the most significantin my life.I had done so in order for you toappreciate education. I know you willencounter some individuals among yourpeers who will compare themselves withyou.Understand that there is a differencebetween an educated person and alearned one. I worked hard to belong tothe latter group.I also took you to my classes at schoolwhenever there were problems concern-ing your baby-sitter. That created a livelyenvironment for my learners becausethey witnessed a bonding session betweenfather and daughter. Some of them stillmake enquiries about your well-being tothis day.The more effort you put in your studiesright now, the clearer the path becomesfor success. Tertiary education takesmore from past experiences in basiceducation. There is no way you canachieve your goal without this hardship.I love you.Your father.

Victory favours the boldEverywhere you go, you meet people whoare afraid. They suffer froma deep sense of inadequa-cy and have lots of insecurities. Most people doubt their capabilities anddeep inside they don’t trust their ability.Itmakes themafraid to grab opportunities

at their disposal. Fear prevents them fromprogressing. They don’t believe that they have the po-tential to achieve whatever they want to be-come in life. And in most cases such frustration and

lack of control are not necessary. We are less defeated thanwe thinkwe are.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Bett and Daniel Salel fought to the line at the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN onSunday, 17 May 2015. The decision, after much deliberation, going the way of Bett in a time of 33minutes and 32 seconds (33:32). Seen here (from left to right): Daniel Salel, Timothy Toroitichand Emmanuel Bett in action on route. PHOTO: VOLUME PHOTOGRAPHY

Bett dips Salel on line at FNBCape Town 12 ONERUN firstIt was the perfect way to get the inauguralFNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN off the ground.A dip on the finish line and missing theworld’s best by 1 second.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Bett and Daniel Salelfought to the line with the decision, aftermuch deliberation, going the way of Bett ina time of 33 minutes and 32 seconds (33:32).Salel recording the same time.

In near perfect conditions the race got un-derway from the start in Milnerton at 9am.The country’s top 10 men and women werecontracted to take on the likes of DanielSalel, Emmanuel Bett, Moses Kipsiro andVivian Cheruiyot.

It was evident within the first 2km thiswas to be a hard and fast race. EmmanualBett, who has run a 27:51.16 for 10 000m, wasin no mood for a bunch finish and set a blis-tering pace from the gun. Within 2km of thestart the lead group of twenty plus had beenwhittled down to eight, Bett setting the pace.Salel running next to him with Kipsiro, Tim-othy Toroitich , Elroy Gelant, Gladwin Mza-zi and Lucky Mohale sitting on their tails.

By 3km Mohale had been blown away. Bettcontinued to race at 2:47/km (2 minutes 47seconds) pace which saw first Gladwin Mza-zi drop off (around 4km just before the raceentered the harbour). Gelant was to fadefrom the leading pack shortly thereafter, and when Kipsiro dropped just before thehalfway mark, it was down to three.

Bett was not going to let off the pace, de-spite feeling nauseous at around 6km. Asthey entered Government alley at the top of

Adderley Street (9km), there was still nosplitting Toroitich, Salel and Bett. 10km waspassed in 27:48 and the World Record was on.

Not even the short but sharp climb upBuitengracht Street separated the trio, butthat climb lost the leaders some valuable sec-onds as they chased the record and huntedfor the win.

With just over 1km to go Bett and Salelupped the pace and Toroitich fell off. Therace for the win went to the line as both Saleland Bett were awarded the time of 33:32, theofficials giving Bett the nod – 1 second off theWorld Record.

Timothy Toroitich finished third, MosesKipsiro fourth with the first South Africanhome being Elroy Gelant in fifth.

“I’m very happy with my run today,” saysBett. “I have had some injury problems inthe last few years, so this show’s me I’m ingood shape and getting back to where I was.I will be competing in the Prefontaine Clas-sic on 30 May in the 10 000m and then theKenyan trials. I want to qualify for the WorldChampionships”.

Gelant was ecstatic after his fifth place.“My hamstring is now all good. This was ahard race. The Kenyans were really flying, but I am very happy”.

The Women’s race saw four-time WorldChampion and Olympic Silver and BronzeMedallist Vivian Cheruiyot break away justbefore half way. She crossed the line in 38:32.Yenenesh Tilahun of Ethiopia was second(39:17) with Lebo Phalula the first South Af-rican home in (39:21).
