Black Power• Started by Stokely Carmichael, member of SNCC• Black people need to state their own goals and lead their own
organizations • More militant plan to achieve equality than Dr. King’s plan• Carmichael urges SNCC to stop recruiting whites
Black Panthers• A political party founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale• Advocated self-sufficiency for black communities, full
employment, and decent housing• Established daycare centers, free breakfast programs &
medical clinics, homeless assistance• Engaged in many shoot-outs w/ police; investigated by the FBI
Dr. King’s Reaction to the New Movements• Objected to the Black Power movement (too separatist), let’s not
alienate whites who are supporting us• Using violence will only lead to more violence• 4/4/1968: MLK assassinated at Lorraine Motel in Memphis
• Accused killer is James Earl Ray, who confesses but recants a day later saying police coerced confession and he was set up• Rioting breaks out. Presidential candidate Bobby Kennedy pleads people to stop the violence
