WHERE LEADERS ARE MADE

Since 1924, Toastmasters International has been recognized as

the leading organization dedicated to communication and

leadership skill development. Through its worldwide network of

clubs, each week Toastmasters helps more than a quarter million

men ans women of every ethnicity, education level and profession

build their competence in communication so they can gain the

confidence to lead others.

By regularly giving speeches, gaining feedback, leading teams

and guiding others to achieve their goals, leaders emerge. They

learn to tell their stories. They listen and answer. They plan and

lead. They give feedback–and accept it. They find their path to

leadership.

skills with our peers. We seek out tips and we all agree becoming a good speaker is a learning path. But when it comes to

evaluating leadership roles we sometimes seem to have lost or forgotten this expertise: we give no feedback at all or only when

there’s a problem, or we talk about them instead of with them.

Sure, we evaluate the leading roles at the club meetings in our manuals and we have the High Performance Leadership project. But

do all officers make a personal success plan at the beginning of their term and seek out tips to become more competent? Or do we

assume we all step into a role as an expert? Speaking for myself: I still have a lot to learn when it comes to leading and coaching

teams.

Do we tell our event organisers and committee members what went well and where we see room for improvement?

Do we know what we are looking for when we look for our successors? Do members know what is expected when they accept a

role? We miss some opportunities here for personal growth and for our pipeline of emerging leaders.

Now leadership feedback is a 2 way track, it’s about receiving and giving.

First step if you want to receive feedback is to define what you want to learn in your role, and then simply ask for it. Ask your

fellow officers, team or committee members, mentors and predecessors. **

Giving constructive feedback on leadership roles is for the biggest part similar to evaluating speeches.

Use ‘I’ statements, be specific and timely and focus on behaviour that can be changed. Highlight genuine strengths and

achievements. Feedforward, explore how future scenarios could be even more successful.

My tip: let’s try it out and make it a habit.

As months passed, the members’ attendance was dwindling until there were only 6 members left.

We asked the members - what were the reasons why they did not want to renew their membership?

Their replies varied:

• the focus was on the Zumba class - not on the program planning and meeting organization;

• the Vice President of Membership and her committee were not reaching out to the members and finding out their concerns

and needs;

• there was no membership orientation;

• no one was encouraged to achieve their educational awards and if someone did - there was no celebration nor recognition;

• the themes should vary instead of having the same topic every time;

• the officers did not welcome the members and guests;

• the setup of the place was done at the last minute and the Zumba instructor was always late. The Toastmasters meeting also

started late.

There were so many things that went wrong! It was an eye opener for all of us. One lady commented “I expected a five star club -

not a two star one”! She was right!

Is your club a “five star” one? It is always recommended to conduct the “Moments of Truth” educational session in every club.

Make sure to ask the members to evaluate the standard of the club based on the MOT. Today, the former “ailing” club has become

a President’s Distinguished club and has a membership of 27 enthusiastic members - enjoying a “five star” treatment.

For years, there has been an interest in division C, in a pool of experienced Toastmasters who could give educational modules intheir club and in the Division. However, this idea never came off the ground. That is, until 2014, when a number of Toastmasters, including Andy Baker, Bill Monsour, and Robert van der Meer organized the first "From Speaker to Trainer" workshop inAmsterdam. Although it was a challenge, this first workshop also established the foundation upon which the program would bebuilt.

Aside from the bare necessities, we also learned to value the individual contribution of every trainer. Every trainer brings theirown experience into the workshop, which only adds more value to an already valuable event. But was the newest addition to thealready existing "From Speaker to Trainer" workshop that would ultimately define the program: the idea of follow-upworkshops.

n September 13th, Division C organized its first "From Speaker to Trainer" workshop in Apeldoorn. 10 Toastmasterslearned how to develop and give trainings. They are the first members to participate in this year’s program, withmany more to follow. But how did this program start? And where will it go?O

The program is a win for everyone involved!

Training HubsFrom Speaker to Trainer

The follow-up workshops came into being because the participants wanted more opportunities to practice the skills theyacquired at the “From Speaker to Trainer" workshops. This is what inspired Arjan Kooistra, who currently coordinates theworkshops, to develop the Training Hubs as they are organized in our Division today. The Training Hubs offers members thechance to give educational modules, practice their training skills, and other members can participate in these trainings. It’s a winfor the trainer and for everyone involved!

For the organizers, it is also a learning experience, and arewarding one at that.Everyone involved in the organization learned how toorganize the events, coordinate the resources necessary, and involve trainers and participants. Robert: "In mytraining, it was very clear to everyone that it was alearning experience. Everyone could ask questions, share their experiences, and offer feedback. This openatmosphere really contributed to the success of theworkshop and also served as an example to theparticipants how a good training can be given."

t the Spring 2015 District Conference in Porto, TI's International Director Khaled Matlagaitu spoke about the District missionusing the analogy of a soaring eagle and its two wings: building new clubs and supporting all clubs in achieving excellence. Atthe recent District officers training (DOT) held in Leuven Belgium, one workshop focused on ways to achieve the second wing ofthis mission. The aim of this article is to provide a briefing of the brainstorming and ideas that were shared in that workshop.A

Learning Moment

Special EventsDARE to achieve excellence!

The following question was posed to the audience: What can we do to support clubs in achieving excellence? Ask any Toastmaster and theywill tell you about the formal benefits of participation: Toastmasters is a living laboratory for self-development in communication andleadership. The more subliminal third leg of the triad is, of course: the relational dimension, i.e. the fellowship and networking. Birds offeather enjoy flocking together. Few things are more fun than meeting new people from all around who share your perspective and wearsimilar sunglasses. Perhaps this fun factor is something we can leverage (?).

Typically extrinsic or multi-club events are among the most enthusiastically reviewed of all Toastmaster experiences. Prime examples ofsuch special events are the semi-annual speech contests at Area and Division levels. But why limit ourselves? Belgian, Swiss andPortuguese organised group city tours. Another Portuguese special event involved the annual vintage celebration at a vineyard. Couragethrough the grapevine! Other examples were the Dutch/Belgian championships as well as the Speaker-to-Trainer (S2T) series of workshopspiloted last year by Division C.

During the course of the DOT weekend, the analogy of cross pollination kept surfacing in the discussions of club quality, membershipretention and how stronger clubs can support new, weak or understrength clubs. It was suggested that, yes, we could wait passively for thebirds and the bees to do their thing (e.g.. membership drives) or perhaps we could take a more active approach by teaming up. Indeed theextra effort involved in putting together a special multi-club event affords its dedicated team plenty of opportunity to practice their teambuilding and leadership skills. Toastmasters truly is a living laboratory!

What can we do to support clubs in achieving excellence?

little something to participate, especially for educational enlightenment. Call this the token price of admission to be takenseriously.

The District’s Finance Manager (nee treasurer) noted that assisting in ordering educational materials from the TI Shop can be oneof the most effective way to apply District funds, especially given the foreign exchange fluctuations involved. This has been theprime motivation behind the District store initiative of past years.

It was announced that consistent with TI's main mission of education, the District is encouraging this year the model piloted lastyear in Division C based on the Speaker-to-Trainer (S2T) program. Teams of participants in the S2T program subsequently put onindependent workshops based on the other educational materials available from the TI shop. Integral in each workshop is thatfundamental learning moment: evaluation and feedback, the key ingredient and special sauce that set apart any Toastmasterevent.

The DOT workshop concluded with a call to action: If we wish to soar like the eagles Khaled spoke of in Porto, what can I/you do?

Typically extrinsic or multi-club events receive rave reviews!

DARE to achieve excellence, both within and outside your club. Whowill take the dare? As that Dead Poet once whispered, What willyour role be? Together we make a difference! Let’s Rise & Shine!

The goal is simple: more fun, more fellowship, more educationalopportunity. Equip yourself with an action plan, a budget, andexplore how the District may support your dream. In the process youand your team will be stretched and grow in more ways than youcan imagine. Truth or dare? Experience is the spice of life!

Saisir l'occasion!

The challenge was summarised using an acrostic:

• Dream Unleash your imagination in brainstorming ideas for new exciting events.

• Action Plan Create an action plan from start to finish and include in the plan a budget.

• Request budget approval Contact the District via your Area or Division Director to explore District support.

• Execution Execute the action plan! Make it happen! Teamwork makes the dream work!

So how can the District assist in this equation? How can we use Districtfunds effectively? Reviewing the ideas put forth in Leuven, perhapsDistrict might subsidize expenses e.g.:

• educational materials• venue rental• PR materials• refreshments• printing, etc.

Another insight was that, while everyone loves freebies, experienceindicates people usually appreciate things more if they have to pay a

o organize an event is primarily an act of communication, under the sign of sharing and caring, in a festive friendly

In my Division

We federate because we strengthen this real synergy for all the members of our group. Every event is an opportunity for all the

voluntary members to meet around a common passion: "dare to speak in public", "stand up to your speaker position".

In the Division A, we work on the planning of all the events of the year from MAY beforehand. We encourage clubs to undertake

the organization of an event in order to allow the members to learn. So, from July, a clear map is broadcast to all the clubs through

Area Directors on all events, dates, places, and which club or clubs. This anticipation aims at allowing clubs to get the room

necessary very early on, at an attractive price, which isn’t easy in Paris.

The highlights are those inescapable meetings, like our Spring and Autumn conferences, which welcome all the competitors within

the clubs, and the Areas, accompanied with all the support other members give them. We celebrate their performances every

time, and we underline their commitment and theirs awards. Then, the happy winners as well as the members join the elected

representatives of other countries in a host country belonging to the District. It is a real opportunity to be able to present ourself in

front of a such a large audience, to meet our counterparts, but also to visit a city, and to discuss…

This year in Division A, every conference is organized by 2 clubs, an english speaking and a french speaking club. The diversity of

culture and languages strengthen this collaborative spirit. It is a common work, underlining famous "Team Work". Undoubtedly, it

develops the Leadership.

To organize, we don’t improvise. We plan. The organizers are real conductors: constitution of a team, choosing an adequate space,

looking for promotional tools, for trainers, to loan and test the equipment and to manage a tight budget just like any club. Thanks

to this planning, programming the event becomes easier.

To organize is to invest oneself, take responsibilities, but also ensure the audience’s satisfaction, remembering that everyone is a

volunteer, and for most, organising an event is a new step in their leadership. Division A encourages the good will in the new

learning and we all try to be indulgent and helpful. But for all, it is primarily a party. Didn’t Robert Ingersoll said “it is the time to

be happy. It is the place to be happy. And to be happy, make each other happy.”

The whole Division E team was attending the training in Leuven, Belgium. Once again, this team has shown to be enthusiastic,

forward thinking and committed. It has been an atmosphere of giving support to each other, learning methods to help weak

clubs, give feedback to leaders or develop new sessions, such as “From Speaker to Trainer”. Many recipes will help our Division,

Areas and Clubs and their members to be more succeful and interesting.

Our next step is the Division E contest. The Rethorik Club Winterthur is hosting the Fall Contest. The organizer is doing his HPL

(High Performance Leadership) Project and faces new challenges every week. It is a pleasure to see the Division E Contest and

him growing day by day. And we let Switzerland know about this: PR, PR and PR all around Zurich area.

The contest is held in German and English. However, it is still a surprise for us if other languages will follow. Do we have French,

Spanish or Dutch? How exciting! The multilingual contests are a fantastic opportunity for all foreigners to speak in their mother

language. They will exceed themselves: More self-confidence. Natural humour. More power. We are looking for this, because it’s

fun to learn from body language, gestures and vocal variety of a speech one cannot understand.

Isn’t it true that ever since the day of our birth and until today, we experience, we learn and therefore, we become. Just a quickexample: as a child, we rode a bike, fell, rode it again, leaned from right to left before finally going ahead for 10 meters. This isexperience. We discovered how to maintain balance. This is learning. Riding like a true “cyclist”. That is what we became. And thiscircle happens everyday of our life!

Therefore we can ask the same question to anyone wishing to quickly and efficiently “become”: is there one environment inparticular where we can quickly experience, learn in abundance and become a lot? It would be a place where our own puzzlewould grow at lightning speed and where each pieces would help shape our own masterpiece!

The answer is yes! There is school, playgrounds, work and many other environments. Nevertheless, there is one place where eachof us can refine its own puzzle infinitely and with elegance. This place indeed is Toastmasters.

e are the sum total of our experiences “. At least, this is what Dr. Thomas GILOVICH, professor of psychologyat Cornell University (state of New-York) advances. We are a puzzle in perpetual evolution!“W

“Imagine such power: with each experience, we learn and become. ”

Division FLet’s grow our own puzzle!

During each of our meetings, we get to attend as an actor or aspectator, to impromptu and prepared speeches, as well asevaluations, which are all unique. Each experience help us learnsomething new: a word of humor, the impact of one gesture, how meaningful a wink was, the audience’s reaction to aparticular smile, the importance of one word, a sentence, atirade, the emotion transmitted by a tone of voice, theenchantment given by certain sounds or rhymes. There is alsothe content: philosophical, scientific, humorous, moving, historical, geographical, educative. Stop. There are so many.

Imagine such power: with each experience, we learn andbecome. We become stronger, more charismatic, funnier, moremoving, wiser, more clever, braver, more tolerant and morealive. We become more than just ourselves.

Each piece connects wonderfully. It’s magical! Our puzzle growsendlessly only to become more and more beautiful. Enough, Ican’t wait anymore. Can you? When is the next meeting?

NB: Our Division’s next conference will take place in Aix en Provence on October 24th.Come in great number to grow your own puzzle!

to the rest of the community and selected a group of Toastmasters from other clubs with availability to support the initiative.

Create a network of clubs allows us to act quickly to help the weak nodes. In the background of this network, there is a network

of people who, in meetings and Toastmasters events, contact, interact, exchange ideas and experiences that enrich and diversify

their points of views. While establishing this connection, a smile makes miracles, but it is clear that speaking or attempting to

speak a language which all people can understand, encourages communication and interaction.

Toastmasters is not just a meeting place for public speaking, it is basically a place, a time, even an excuse to learn how to

communicate.

few days ago, I was at a session for promoting a club that has trouble in continuity. Hosting club members had a nice

surprise: to see the aid received by the rest of toastmasters of your Area who helped making the meeting a success.

Communication is not only based on speaking, also on listening. That is practiced every session, mainly in the role of evaluation,

what builds one of the pillars of the sessions, feedback. If there is a role of session that best summarizes the four values of

Toastmasters is the Evaluator.

We talk a lot of speaking and to act and less about listening and to ponder. In my opinion active listening helps us to think and

diversify our points of view. And this is a fabulous starting point for our actions are definitely sharper and achieve better results.

Antonio Meza and Thomas Rose as winners for District 59 and 95 for a session of coaching and feedback.

Right now, Artful Orators is looking for sharing best practice on how to sustain an advanced club and recruit members. Corporate

On Thursday, September 17th, the European Investment Bank (EIB) Toastmasters Club participated in a presentation day of all EIB

sports and leisure clubs. Hundreds of people passed by our stand and our enthusiastic PR volunteers had the opportunity to

explain what Toastmasters’ is all about. Almost 1% of the Bank employees expressed an interest to attend one of our Club’s

sessions as a guest, and some were so excited about the whole concept that they were even ready to sign up as members. All in all,

a great success!

At the time of the Clarion edition, the clubs Sabers, the Green Hearts and Les Orateurs du Jeudi had held their autumn contests.

Saber Toastmasters held their Humorous/Table Topic Competition on September 16 th at Spangdahlem AB Germany. While the

winner of the humorous competition was a familiar competitor, Ms. Covey McAllister, many competitors were participating for the

first time. Saber Toastmaster's President, Christian Bellenger came in second place during the Table Topics Competition while Ms.

Shannon Pons won first place speaking on what she would have advised her 15-year-old self. The Sabers had 3 guests during the

competition and one guest, caught up in the fervour of the competition, signed up for membership, evidence of the ever changing

(and ever growing) nature of this military based Toastmasters Club.

The Green Hearts is sending Caylea Young to both Humour Speech Contest and Table Topics Contest. The meeting had a good

attendance of six guests. Three signed up their membership on the spot. The Club has already fulfilled two goals towards the usual

President Distinguished Club award: 8 new members.

The ODJ is sending David Lewis to the Humour Speech Contest and French Table Topics Contest. And Arnoldas Mikulskas to the

English Table Topics Contest. The French club has the privilege of being represented in four contests. The meeting was thrilling and

had lots of suspense with 6 members and 7 guests.

In Bologna there are a lot of towers, but the most famous are the Asinelli and Garisenda towers, that give name to the local clubToastmasters Two Towers, meeting on Wednesday evening. After the meeting you really have to order a plate of “Tortellini”, ring-shaped pasta stuffed with a mix of meat (pork loin, prosciutto) and served with “Ragù”, a sauce of minced meat, slowly cooked.

In Torino, after visiting the Mole Antonelliana, onThursday evening you can meet friends at ToastmastersTorino. In Torino there is also the corporate club ToastingIn the Sky, holding meetings Friday at lunch time, and anew club, Radiant Rethoric, soon to be chartered, offersEnglish meetings on Wednesday nights. After the club meeting, head for dinner withsome club members and taste “riso allo zafferano”, ricemade with beef stock, beef bone marrow, lard (insteadof butter) and cheese, flavored and colored withsaffron. Then try a “Cotoletta alla milanese”, a friedcutlet similar to Wiener schnitzel, but cooked "bone-in". It is fried in clarified butter only and traditionallyuses exclusively milk-fed veal.

Wherever in Italy you will be there will be, Toastmaster will not be far, we are waiting for you!

Let your wanderings take you to Vicenza, home of Andrea Palladio, who left many outstanding examples of his art with palacesand villas in the city's territory: the Palladian Villas of the Veneto in the surrounding area are so beautiful and explain why the cityhas been enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Amongst all that beauty you could help a new club to get started,Toastmasters Vicenza.

A bit more east, Aviano, home of the oldest Italian Air Base. The base is considered the birthplace of Italian aviation. This is whereAviano Toastmaster’s holds their meeting every Tuesday.

Most clubs in Italy will be able to accommodate English speaking guests and many will have an after meeting drink/lunch/dinner,so you can mingle with the locals and get tips on what to visit the following days. “Fellow Toastmaster”

In order to bring closer Toastmasters members of the Division L, strengthening relationships and promoting the exchange of ideas

and experiences, and also to present some newer members, it was launched a survey to members. The idea is to publish their

answers, and some personal data, on the Division L Facebook page in a weekly basis, entitled “Fellow Toastmaster”.

Sometimes, is enough to see a picture or an answer of someone to start a conversation, maximizing the networking, making easier

to inform, organize events in the community and make great things happen.

Toastmasters in the Middle Age

Have you have wondered what it would be like to have a Toastmaster Club in the 14th or 15th century? Where would they meet?

Who would attend? What would be the speeches’ themes? You have never lost your mind wondering on these absolutely

fracturing questions? :)

On September 26th Leiria TM Club had a meeting at Leiria Castle with three speeches on King Dinis - a poet a visionary and the

founder of the oldest Portuguese university - Coimbra. We also had medieval dances in a medieval environment.

Last year Diogo Beja launched an innovative program called

“Turismo Toastmasters” that was intended to promote and and

acknowledge visits to other clubs.

This year we decided to go a little further and will give the

members another reason to visit a different club - they will steal a

cup. For that to happen they need to be at least two members of

the same club performing roles in a session.

We began this movement on September 9th at CLUTA - Aveiro,

and only a week later the cup has already travelled to Porto (OTC)

and is now at Invicta TM Club, also in Porto. But there are other

What have you earned by participating in the District contest?

A: For me it was a tremendous experience at many levels. First of all, my participation in the Toastmaster Contests was a way to

challenge myself and to understand what kind of level I had as a speaker. When I look back I also realize that I’ve met some

wonderful people. Finally, to be a great speaker you have to be prepared to different kind of audience and environment.

Which advice you’d like to give to future contestants?

A: My advice is: don’t think too much. Just go for it, you won’t regret it. It’s time to take yourself to the next level, and a

Toastmaster Contest gives you a more thrilling scenario, which is more close to our daily real life challenges - those moments when

your communication skills can really make a difference. Besides that, you will find all the support you need to keep going and to

improve yourself.

umor Contest are being hold around all the Toastmasters Clubs, Areas and Divisions. We interviewed our Paulo Salgado

“… don’t think too much. Just go for it, you won’t regret it. It’s time to take yourself to the next level.”

Can you name three qualities to go far on the contest?

A: One: get to know yourself and find who are you as a speaker. Be natural, be yourself. Two: Believe in yourself, feel confident

and trust in your speech. It will influence your composure and performance. Three: Listen to the feedback that is given to you and

practice as much as you can. As I said, every speech is an unfinished masterpiece.

Prepared Speech

Toastmasters since 2012, member of the Paris Speech Masters, Antonio represented our District in the last World Championship ofPublic Speaking. In Las Vegas, Antonio went to the semi-finals, making all of us proud.

By the time this interview was made, Antonio was in China and he was 7 hours ahead of us, that were in Portugal. However, thatdidn’t stop Antonio to speak with us and share a good moment.

Pedro: Antonio, first things first, what are you doing in China?

Antonio: (Laugh). In China I’m working in two different capacities. I was invited to participate in some seminars as a graphicfacilitator. That’s one of the things that I do and there are two different seminars that I’m collaborating. One is called Transcomand it’s a seminar about hypnosis. The other one is called Success Factor Modeling and it’s a seminar based on a book I illustrated.I know the trainers very well since we’ve been working together about one year and a half, so when they are teaching, I’mdrawing in my iPad based on what they are teaching. Then, they show the drawings in the next day as a way to review what I’vebeen taught, but also to express the experience that people are having. Sometimes I do cartoons of the participants or someillustrations about questions they asked. This way people recognize the experience they had on the day before and it helps themreconnecting with what they learned. A lot of people like it so I also enjoy doing it. When I was invited to visit China I was reallyhappy because I never thought that this kind of work would make me travel so far!

Pedro: It’s amazing… I never heard about such a ‘job’. Do you always use your iPad to draw?

Antonio: Actually, there are a lot of ways to do it. Sometimes I use a whiteboard. I do it often in Paris during seminars. Usuallythey call it graphic recording, so I’m representing with cartoons and words what is happening and in the end they have this recordof the seminar. Other times I do it like I’m doing now, with the iPad. I have special apps and pens to do it, so it’s a fine solution todraw.

Pedro: Great! But Antonio… You said you’re participating in a hypnosis seminar? Can you talk a little more about it?

Antonio: Sure. I’m a trainer in neurolinguistic programming (NLP) and inside of this is included a little bit of Ericksonian hypnosis. It’s a very good tool for coaches and therapists, in fact, to anyone who’s working in supporting people. It enables us to connectwith people and to bypass the objections of the rational mind. Then we can understand what people really, really want and have aconversation in a different level, the level of people’s deepest values and believes. In that way, the other person allows himself toexplore what they really want and it’s holding them back. In this seminars we have a lot of people who’re coming to learn and usethis tool in their professional life, as well as people who want to work on themselves.

Pedro: Is coaching your main occupation?

Antonio: We could say that I’ve two main occupations. If you asked me one year ago, I’d say that I’m a coach and in my spare timeI do illustrations. Today, I’d say that illustrations, and as a complementary activity I do coaching. It has been changing because thework I’m doing as illustrator and graphic facilitator has been developing a lot. Now I’m illustrating books and different things, so ittakes most of my time and it’s my main income source.

ntonio Meza, the District’s champion of public speaking, was the first person being interviewed by Clarion. It was a pleasure to have him as our first guest, not only because he is a reference speaker of our District, but also because he did a special effort to make room for us and speak with us by Skype. Pedro: I start feeling that my life is boring… Antonio, how did

you end up in a Toastmasters club?

Antonio: As I said I’m a NLP trainer and I was working on my

communication skills. I was already offering workshops on

body language and then some people that I know told me

about Toastmasters as a very good tool for public speaking. I

got curious and I went to Paris Speech Masters, that had an

announcement on a Meetup page. As I was offering also my

workshop on Meetup, I decided to give it a look and I liked it.

“A secret to make champions… I don’t think there’s just one secret”

Prepared Speech

Pedro: What was your purpose in Porto, when you won the District contest?

Antonio: In Porto my purpose was to deliver the best speech that I could. I really wanted to give a message and touch people. In

my opinion, this contest doesn’t make sense if you don’t believe in what you’re saying. So I had a message that I wanted to share

it with as many people as possible.

Pedro: What is the secret to make champions?

Antonio: A secret to make champions… I don’t think that there’s just one secret. It’s more like a recipe that uses different

ingredients. One of those ingredients is to have a purpose, a really strong why for what you’re doing. Another ingredient is the

practice. You really have to practice and work a lot to achieve what you want. It’s about commitment. The third ingredient is

your capacity to receive feedback. That’s why you need a mentor, people around you who can help you; but when I say receive

feedback, in fact it’s more about filtering feedback. This is very important because a lot of people will give you feedback but not

all the feedback is good or is the feedback you need. It’s like you’re giving feedback to Rafael Nadal and saying that he should do

this and that. But you’re not Rafael Nadal, so what works for you doesn’t necessarily need to work for him. That’s why you have

a coach, to help you filtering feedback. The fourth ingredient is to have fun. If you don’t enjoy, there is no reason to be there. I

just can spend so much time in this because it’s fun for me. I love when I can touch my audience and they come up to me saying

what inspired them.

I thought it was a really good way for me to receive feedback. That was something that I immediately felt that could be

useful for me, because Toastmasters could give me feedback about my speaking skills but also about my use of the English

language. I’m not a native English speaker, so I needed feedback because when I was training no one would give me

feedback. I was the ‘teacher’ so, unless it was a big mistake, nobody would say something. Although I live in France, I work

in English almost all of the time so that was a very important point for me. That said, I started as a Toastmasters in 2012 and

I’ve been President of Paris Speech Masters, a club founded by Bob Mohl. Bob was my mentor and he has been coaching a

lot of people that I can describe as accomplished speakers. He was the mentor of Olivia Scofield, Jon Seidel and other people

than are the proof that Bob knows what he’s doing. He’s always generous with what he knows and I really appreciate that.

Prepared Speech

Pedro: I still remember the guacamole falafel… Antonio, do you have any framework when you prepare your speeches?

Antonio: For a competition, normally I write the speech and I integrate it. One of the World Champions, Darren Lacroix, defines this in a very fine way: “you don’t memorize your speech, you integrate it and then you relieve it”. What it means is that I write the speech, I repeat it a lot and then I don’t care exactly about the words. I can forget the perfect repetition of the words, Iconnect with the experience that I’m telling about and then I share it as if I’m living it now. This makes the emotion authentic. But I do repeat and rehearse a lot so that I don’t have to worry about remembering what I’m going to say. It’s very important that Irepeat until I feel comfortable. When I do my speeches I’m also worried about the structure. I write it all and then I find the structure that it has. Then I rewrite it taking into account that natural structure and finally I put that structure in the space and in the stage. When I’m repeating I consider this and I use the space. Consequently, when I’m delivering the speech, my body knows where to move. This works as reinforcement because the space also helps me remembering, so this is a very embodied experience.

For instance, in Porto, I really wanted to communicate the idea that you’re identity can be much more open. When you accept that idea, you also accept the idea that the identity of other people can also be much more. That for me is empathy. You see theother one as more similar to you. This is the first step. Finding the message, the idea. Then, you need to think about the stories you can share to illustrate that. Finally, it’s about organizing them in a structure that can have a nice conclusion. When I’ve the structure, I can focus in the details, in the humor. So when I’m reading my speech, I try to imagine that I’m reading the speech of another person and I try to make jokes about it. Then I can have fun with the speech and I can integrate that in my speech.

Pedro: It seems like a sculpture...

Antonio: Yes, definitely. I also think that as a cartoonist I always can have a fun approach and look for the right angle to make it fun. I like to put that little cartoons in my speeches, like the guacamole with the falafel. It’s a cute image that I don’t need to draw, I can draw it in your mind. Right?

Pedro: Yes, it worked with me. How was your experience in the World Championship?

Antonio: It was fantastic! I’ve never been in a worldwide Toastmasters conference before and it’s really a good experience. You can learn a lot and connect with people from all over the world. It was amazing to compete there, it’s very rich, very challenging and stakes are high. You need to keep your mind in a health mindset, you have to take care of your physical being. It’s important to sleep well and eat well to be in good shape for the competition. I had the opportunity to arrive to the United States almost three weeks before and that was good. I knew that I was out of jetlag for sure and I’ve also the luck to had my wife with me. She was an important support for me and she was always taking care of me. Another important aspect was that before going to Vegaswe did this event called ‘Road to Vegas’. I got together with Thomas Rose, who was the champion from District 95, and we practiced speeches in different places, like Brussels, Paris and London. So we were supporting each other and teaming up. That was really cool. I love collaboration and that for me was a great opportunity to collaborate with Thomas. Now I’ve a very good friendship with him, he’s a great guy and I’m very happy about that. I was also very happy in the day of the competition. The room had about 300 people inside, which is a good audience, and they were receiving the speech in such a good way… They were laughing at all the right places and even more (laugh). I think my deliver was even better than in Porto but I was unfortunate to be a little overtime. That was an important lesson because I feel I was a little bit overconfident. Every time I was delivering my speech, consistently, I was doing 6 minutes and 45/50 seconds, so I thought I was really in a safe song. Like I didn’t need to worry about that and that’s what went wrong. For me it means that you can never be too confident. It’s okay to be confident and to believe in yourself, but I went a little bit too confident. By the moment I paid attention to the timekeeper, I saw the red card I understood that something could go wrong. However, I can say that it was the best deliver I did so far and that makes me happy.

Antonio MezaOur first interview, with our number one!

Page 27: Clarion October

Pedro: The way you are describing you’re whole experience, I feel the real Toastmasters spirit, which is about friendship,

connecting with people and improve ourselves.

Antonio: I totally agree. It’s about supporting each other, like what happened with Thomas, it’s about sharing our learning and it’s

also about enjoying.

Pedro: I’m happy to know about that. It’s the way I imagine it should be. Antonio, it’s time to go, I know you’ve a busy schedule, so

I just want to thank you for your time and say that I hope to meet you soon, in Amsterdam.

Antonio: Thank you. I hope to see you in the Conference too (or in Portugal)!

For those who are interested, Antonio will be participating in a TedX Conference, next 17th October in Clermont-Ferrand (South of

France). This time the challenge is to present the same speech he used in Las Vegas but… in French! Adapting a speech for a

different language it’s always a challenge, so if you want to see how to do it successfully, just be in Clermont-Ferrand!

Stay awesome!
