A Word from AnneHello Friends,

With any luck, this warm weather is here to stay, and we can officially announce that spring has sprung! But, best of all, gorgeous pops of colour are showing up on our fabric shelves! It is so refreshing! And, there is just so much going on!

Our new Class Schedule is out and there is absolutely something for every quilting/sewing interest and ability. Our teachers are at the ready! From Gwen’s Jelly-Roll Rug (that’s right; a Jelly Roll and batting), to Samantha’s Another Brick In The Wall (made with your old jeans), to the ever-popular collage quilts, wallets, cosmetics bags and a new technique class with Cheryl Arkison, you will have everything you need to increase your knowledge plus hone your skills.

Also, back by popular demand this summer, is our fun-filled Kids Camp. Classes by the day or week are available, with or without a machine. Get your kids sewing up a storm this summer!

At the end of August, we are bringing award-winning longarm quilter Sue Patten to Calgary. She will take you from Ruler Work 101 to Perfecting The Panto to Stitching With Stencils to Mastering The Art Of Feathers and so much more. Sue will lead seven different classes designed to make you longarm-proficient. PLUS, two classes for your domestic machine quilting. Register early and register often!

What else is going on? Well, BERNINA is celebrating 125 years of sensational sewing machines. And at MSR, we are just celebrating! Stay tuned!

In the meantime, please join us for one of our exciting charity initiatives. Days for Girls and Quilts From The Heart are two non-profits we support every month. We are all about giving back and we invite you to join one or both groups!

Both BERNINA and Brother have lots of new innovations this season, not to mention great pricing. Be sure to check out our new machines, notions, patterns, books, embroidery, appliqué, ScanNCut and AccuQuilt Go. And remember, our Longarm Studio and Service Department are just a quick phonecall away.

So, get your sewing room ready for a spring and summer to remember. And, thank you so much for supporting your local independent quilt shop. Please recommend us to all of your friends - we sincerely appreciate your referrals! Also, be sure to check us out on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

See you in the shop!

Sincerely,

Meet Our Teachers!

Dorothy MerkleyDorothy has been sewing since she was five years old and her grandmother gave her her first sewing kit. She had help from her grandmother, her sister and her best friend’s mom learning to sew. She started with Barbie clothes and pants for her teddy bear, whose legs were falling off by then. Other than Home Economics classes in school, Dorothy has been self-taught. Dorothy loves making her own clothes, as she will never attend a party with someone else in the same outfit. She discovered quilting in 1988 with some Continuing Education classes.

She now quilts, sews clothing and accessories and cannot walk past a batik collection without stopping every time. Dorothy loves passing on the knowledge, tips and tricks she has learned over the years. Dorothy enjoys

inspiring her students and watching them succeed.

Gwen AnDersonGwen came down with quilt pox in 1981 and hopes to never recover from this disease. Her children complain that she has more pictures of her quilts than she has of them. Her husband wraps her presents in quilting fabric and can find a quilt shop in any foreign country where they travel. She works for fabric. Gwen shares her passion and her addiction for quilting with students and customers of My Sewing Room.

Anne DAleAnne has been sewing for over 40 years, with her sewing career beginning when she was 14 years old. She has an extensive background including a degree in Sewing and Fashion Merchandising. Anne has sewn for many different industries, including: a flag factory, clothing factories, custom one-of-a-kind clothing design, film and theatre. Before My Sewing Room, Anne owned another sewing business for 20 years.

Teaching is Anne’s passion. She loves handwork, costumes and smaller projects like bags and wall hangings. Her favourite sewing techniques are appliqué and both hand and machine embroidery. A love for historical

sewing, tools and techniques are a huge source of inspiration for Anne, and she is most inspired by history itself. Her favourite base colour is black for its power to make other colours pop.

Cheryl ArkisonBack when Cheryl started quilting, it was practically unheard of for a 23-year-old to do so, but there she was. Now, 20 years later, she hasn’t stopped. In addition to her own creative work, mostly in improvisational piecing, she loves to teach, write books, spread the gospel of improv and design quilts. Every now and then she will make a garment; her Grade 8 Home Economics teacher would be proud. She is well-known for her use of bold colour and the quiet whispers of low-volume fabrics, but she is comfortable using anything in between as well. Cheryl

says, “Use what you love, what makes you happy! Just get your butt in the seat and sew!”

DebrA CliftonDebra has been sewing since she was a little girl. She then went on to sew in school and once she had her children, she sewed for them. Her experience is in garment sewing and quilting, as well as home décor. She also enjoys embroidery. Debra has worked at My Sewing Room for 2½ years and loves every minute of it. She is the Manager of the Machine Department. She currently sews on a Brother sewing and embroidery machine and a BERNINA serger.

kerry fosterKerry has been quilting seriously for 6 years, and crafting in general for over 25. She was editing a craft magazine in the UK, while Popular Patchwork was a sister publication. The complexity of quilt patterns really intrigued her, and despite math never being her strongest skill, she just went for it and found that it was a skill that she could still work on. She has written and designed quilt patterns for magazines since 2013, and she rarely makes a pattern by another designer – she has too many ideas of her own! More recently, Kerry has also been

sewing bags. She often uses bright, modern fabrics, and a lot of the time she likes to use what some might call “borderline novelty prints”. If there’s a fabric with a cute or unusual animal on it, Kerry will probably buy it!

leA wAlkerLea started learning to sew in elementary school and continued taking fashion studies through junior high and high school. She took up quilting when she was pregnant with her first child. She started working at My Sewing Room just over 2 years later and has been in the Service Department for 4 years. She sews on a BERNINA 880, serges on a BERNINA L460 and does most of her embroidery on a Brother PR1050x. She enjoys making quilts and clothes as well as machine embroidery. Her taste in quilts is quite modern, but she doesn’t shy away from

other styles. She loves working with fiddly things and small pieces such as English paper piecing, foundation piecing and bra making. Her biggest fabric weakness is anything grey with math on it.

MiChelle PittsRight after Michelle obtained her art degree, she decided to use it in textile art. She has been designing textiles her whole career. She spent many years creating costumes for Cirque du Soleil. She also taught for at least 15 years at the Montreal Centre for Contemporary Textiles. Her specialties included machine knitting, machine embroidery, digitizing and bobbin lace. Sewing was a big part of her work and she has used Brother machines for most of her career. Michelle enjoys trying new techniques, exploring all of the possibilities and pushing all of

the boundaries. But most of all, she loves giving a new, modern look to old techniques.

lynDA DAniluk “A quilter is an artist using fabric and thread instead of canvas and paint.”

Lynda has been sewing since she was 7 years old, eventually moving into designing and sewing wedding dresses. In the early ‘90s she got the quilting bug and has not looked back. Her favourite type of quilting is hand appliqué combined with embroidery. She has been fortunate to have been trained by some of the best quilt teachers in

the industry. Lynda loves to share her passion with students by showing tips and tricks for making any project a bit easier. Teaching collage is a perfect balance of appliqué and art.

linDA wArDLinda has been sewing since Home Economics class in junior high school. There was nothing she liked about the teacher or the class, so it was certain that she was not destined to be a sewer! But life happened, and soon she was sewing all of the clothes for herself and her family. You name it, she had sewn it. From coat making, to coat-making classes, retirement, discovering quilting, and now, to teaching quilting classes, Linda has had an exciting and varied adventure through the world of sewing. She is always up for trying a new technique,

improving instructions, ironing out the wrinkles and tweaking it until it’s just right, then she teaches it! Linda enjoys all genres of quilting and likes to push her creative limits as well as her students’! Her style is ever-evolving

and she is always excited to have students that want to evolve with her. Linda hopes to inspire and encourage those who need a little nudging to step outside of their box. She believes that quilts should have a sound foundation, good techniques, the right fabrics and LOTS and LOTS of starch!

sAMAnthA nelson kenneDySamantha’s grandfather, a tailor, influenced her love of sewing. She took up quilting in 2003 and has been teaching classes since 2010. Samantha began with hand quilting, then switched to machine piecing and longarming. She loves gadgets that make quilting more accurate and efficient. Her mother, a mathematician, instilled Samantha’s love of math which she uses in designing blocks, borders, quilts and other projects. Now a talented and accomplished quilter, Samantha loves creating with fabric, colours and textures. She enjoys

making upcycled products from a variety of fabrics, and has published a tote bag pattern called Travelling Pants. States Sam, “Quilting has connected me to my past and brings new friends into my present; I enjoy sharing what

I’ve learned.”

nAnCy lonGsonNancy came from a large family and was taught to sew at a young age. She finally found her niche in quilting 35 years ago, and for the past 25 years, she has been active in learning new techniques and instructing quilting classes at My Sewing Room. Prior to that, she taught at Quilter’s Cabin. She is happily-married and has a large blended family. Nancy started the charity group called Quilts From The Heart, which is involved with the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre. The group makes and donates quilts for children at the Centre every month.

New Owner, Machine and Software Classes

At My Sewing Room, our goal is to sell you the right machine for you. Part of that goal is teaching you how to use your machine so that you really “know” your machine and thus know that it is the right one for you.

ALL of the machines we sell come with FREE classes to help you learn your machine’s abilities. These are NOT classes on how to sew; these are classes on how to use your sewing machine.

You must BRING YOUR OWN SEWING MACHINE to these classes. We realize that is asking a lot sometimes, but it is very important in order to learn:

● how to use all of those fancy features you have no idea what to do with

● what all of those feet that came with the machine are for

● how to clean and maintain your machine for optimal performance and long life

By bringing in your machine, we can ensure that you get the most out of it.

This class will help you to become very familiar with your Brother sewing machine. You will learn the features of your machine, increase your knowledge of sewing and achieve greater success with your sewing projects.

This class is included free with the purchase of a Brother sewing machine. Students are required to purchase an additional class kit.
