To Believe or Not to Believe
On this Second Sunday of Easter, we hear once again the Gospel story about the appearance of
Jesus and the absence of Thomas the apostle. Perhaps because of this Gospel passage, Thomas throughout history has received what we might call a “bad rap.” Yes, he disbelieves at first, but with
Jesus’ appearance his disbelief turns to belief, amazement and faith. It might be good for us to look at
the positive side of Thomas’ experience. He, like so many of us in the world today, have a hard time believing what we do not see, feel or experience in a physical way. Belief in Jesus requires a leap of
faith, making a conscious decision to believe in the Lord.
Thomas ultimately put his belief in the Lord. Perhaps he felt embarrassed at first. The Lord,
however, continues to love him and calls him, and us, to dismiss our lack of faith. We are to embrace the Lord with our hearts and minds. Easter is all about taking on the new and life-giving Spirit of
Jesus. Let us not doubt the Lord’s presence in our lives. If we doubt and then find Jesus making Himself known to us, how embarrassed we may feel. We need to know that in His own way,
according to His own timetable, the Lord will reveal Himself to us.
Let us be a part of that group of people Jesus refers to in the Gospel today: “Blessed are those
who have not seen and have believed.” (John 20:29)

we invite you to continue watching weekend masses online at st. james the apostle parish
Thank you to all those parishioners who participated in our online Masses for Palm Sunday, the Paschal
Triduum and Easter Sunday. We heard so much of your positive feedback, therefore the decision was made to
continue filming and making available weekend Masses. Stay tuned to your regular Flocknotes from the parish for the weekly link or just check our website stjamesge.org on Saturdays for the link to the latest Mass
which will be found in the headers. A big thank you to parishioner Phil Mueller of Mueller Production
Services, (www.muellerproductionservices.com) whose generous donation of many hours of time and talent
have made it possible for us to continue this ministry.

Act of Spiritual Communion by Saint Alphonsus Ligouri:
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to receive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. St. John Paul II explains:
“This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy—the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the universal Church.” —Pope Saint John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005)
Divine Mercy Sunday: St. Faustina’s Diary records 14 occasions when Jesus requested that a Feast of Mercy (Divine Mercy Sunday) be observed, for example:
“My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the Fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. … Let no soul fear to draw near to Me. … It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday
after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.” —(Diary, no. 699)
On May 5, 2000, five days after the canonization of St. Faustina, the Vatican decreed that the Second Sunday of Easter would henceforth be known as Divine Mercy Sunday.
The Image: Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision, with his right hand raised in a blessing and his left touching his garment above his heart. Red and white rays emanate from his heart, symbolizing the blood and water that was poured out for our salvation and our sanctification. The Lord requested that “Jesus, I trust in You” be inscribed under his image. Jesus asked that his image be painted and venerated throughout the world: “I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish” (Diary, no. 48) and “By means of this image I will grant many graces to souls” (Diary, no. 742).
The Chaplet of Divine Mercy: The Chaplet was also given to St. Faustina with this promise: “Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you” (Diary, no. 1541). “Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. … Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy” —(Diary, no. 687). See the following page for how to pray the chaplet.

HOW TO PRAY THE CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY
Optional Opening Prayers: You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls,
and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy,
envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us.
(Repeat 3 times) O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!
Our Father, Hail Mary and the Apostle’s Creed
For each of the five decades (On each “Our Father” bead of the rosary, pray)
Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
(On each of the 10 “Hail Mary” beads, pray) For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Concluding prayer (Repeat 3 times) Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
Optional Closing Prayer Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with
great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself.

Christian Service Ministries Volunteers Needed for our Mother’s Day
Flower Delivery to Homebound Parishioners
Each year, the St. James Council of Catholic Women volunteers bring spring flowers, friendly conversation and a prayer card to the homebound of the parish. Volunteers deliver the flowers to our parishioners who are ill or in need of some cheer.
The deliveries traditionally take place before Mother’s Day (May 10, 2020) but due to the coronavirus pandemic, we must adhere to the guidelines of the State of Illinois. We must practice social distancing and stay at home, if possible. When the time is right, we will proceed with this wonderful program. So, if you want to help-OR-if you know of a parishioner in need of a delivery, please contact Susan Birns @ 630-469-9575.

positive actions we can take right now It is the prayer of Fr. David and the St. James staff that you are remaining safe and healthy, figuring out a sort of "new normal", while always remembering that the Lord is near and His love never changes. Although we are apart physically at this time, the faith family of St. James has never been closer spiritually. Your light and love continue to shine brightly in these tough times and it is such an encouragement to so many. Based upon some suggestions you've taken the time to generously offer, we would like to offer some (hopefully) helpful resources of positive actions we can take right now during this time when we are asked to shelter-in-place. We will send updates via Flocknote 3x a week with more suggestions. May God bless you and keep you close to His heart.
