Languages as key qualifiersSprachkompetenz als Schlüsselqualifikation

Teaching and Learning: towards the Learning Society (EC 2001)

In many countries it is quite normal for most people to be able to use three languages. In the European Union, such people are well placed to take full advantage of European citizenship and of the single market. They are better able to move between countries for educational, professional or other reasons. Their linguistic skills are attractive to employers.

… creating innovative environments which provide new windows of opportunity for combining languages with other parts of the curriculum … .

Teacher education will increasingly need to train teachers in harnessing the expertise of younger generations by creating opportunities for students to use and share their digital competences and personal learning environments.

As educational practice builds on social connectivity, the development of communication competences becomes a shared responsibility across all disciplines. This requires re-drawing curricular parameters of teacher education so that every teacher supports language learning with respect to first, second, foreign, heritage, minority, regional, subject-specific, and digital languages.
