Socially distanced, we are still able to draw near, in Hebrew, karov, in community. Zoom creates a level of intimacy, from the close up of another’s face, to the glimpse into another’s kitchen. The reality of isolation is heartbreaking, yet we continue to learn new ways to create profound connections.

In the coming months, we will lean into a close-up. With guest presenters who lift up important issues such as multicultural Jewish life, anti-racism, anti-Semitism, Israel, and Jewish music, we will have a literal close-up on Zoom.

As we gear up our stamina to commit to limits meant to preserve our own lives and the lives of our community and our world, we will find ways to be near, karov, to be in each other’s lives, close up. I hope to connect with you soon at our upcoming events.

- Rabbi Jill Maderer
