OVERVIEW
§ AASA and the CoSN have been awarded a grant by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to collaborate with Gartner, Inc. to initiate a project titled Closing the Gap: Turning SIS/LMS Data into Action (Closing the Gap).
§ The Closing the Gap project is aimed at understanding how K-12 educators can use the data available in SIS and LMS to strengthen classroom instruction.
§ The project will:
§ Provide educators with increased understanding of the current market, capabilities of available systems, and teachers’ classroom needs for meaningful data.
§ Establish an appropriate selection, procurement and implementation of SIS and LMS systems.
§ Empower teachers and school system leaders to analyze their students’ experiences, and to collaborate to support and engage students.

OVERVIEW CoP Options
§ CoP 1: Bridging SIS & LMS in New Ways: Exploring the use of formative data to inform classroom instruction and standards-based content.
§ CoP 2: Harnessing Students: Leveraging your SIS/LMS to engage students in analyzing data to personalize their learning.
§ CoP 3: Growing a Data-Rich Culture: Creating a learning eco-system that fosters continuous use of data to strengthen instruction.
§ CoP 4: Synchronizing the Work: Transforming a central-office team whose work is synchronized around positive student outcomes.
§ CoP 5: Making the Principal the Instructional Leader: Exploring how school leaders and teachers can use data to inform day-to-day instruction within the classroom.

BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATION
Participating Districts will receive:
§ Three free conference registrations for members of their district cohort to attend either the AASA Annual Conference or the CoSN Annual Conference.
§ Recognition via AASA- and CoSN-sponsored meetings and publications.
§ Recognition via the Closing the Gap website and publications.
§ Opportunities to serve as presenters at AASA and CoSN meetings and in webinars.

DISTRICT COMMITMENTS
1. Identify a leadership team of 3 senior-level administrators such as: § superintendent/deputy superintendent
§ chief technology officer
§ chief academic officer or principal
2. Participate in one face-to-face meeting § AASA Annual Conference , Houston , Texas (February 16-19, 2012)
§ or CoSN Annual Conference, Washington, DC (March 5-7, 2012)
§ Travel allowance for 3 representatives from each district

3. Access and contribute to the Community of Practice for at least 12 months. § Open CoP – available to all school districts and the general K-12
community to collaborate on project-related best practices
§ Private CoP – available to district representatives to post their challenges and planned solutions and get feedback from peers and experts
§ Confidentiality and protection privacy of all users
4. Identify a minimum of 3 teachers who will participate in CoP discussions.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Key Dates on Application Timeline: § Application package made available to districts on
9/23/11.
§ AASA and CoSN joint webinar on October 6, 2011 to review application process and answer questions.
§ The submission deadline is October 21, 2011.
§ Notification of selection status in late-November 2011.
§ CoP launched in February/March 2012.
