The figures of 2025 do not include imported coal. The demand for coal

transportation by rail will, however, be much more than the conservative estimates

of 700 MT.

Dedicated Freight Corridors

• The Eastern DFC (Dankuni – Ludhiana) 1839 km. and the Western DFC

(Dadri – JNPT) 1514 km. are already sanctioned high priority State-of-the-

art projects expected to be commissioned by 2016-17 with an estimated

investment of Rs 50,000 cr.

• It is expected that 60% of the Traffic of eastern DFC will be coal which

will link CCL, NCL , ECL and BCCL as well as new coal mines near Pakur

• Both Eastern and Western DFC will also carry imported coal from the

ports on the eastern and western coasts to the consumption centres

• Besides, surveys are being conducted for four future Dedicated Freight

Corridors (North-South, East-West, East-coast and Southern corridors)

• DFC as well as their feeder routes is being planned for heavy and long -

haul i.e. high axle-load (25 t) wagons and longer trains

• The length of feeder routes to Western and Eastern DFC would be around

5000 km. which are under upgradation

Challenges

• Future growth in coal sector will come from coal blocks which

require urgent rail connectivity

• The linking of coal blocks as well as new ports will be crucial which

can be partnership /PPP projects between Railways and stake

holders

• Last mile connectivity to new blocks will account for more than 200

MT of coal by 2020

• Handling facilities at ports and terminals will have to match the

growth

• Generate capacity, ahead of demand

• Resource Mobilisation for modernisation and network augmentation

Page 12: Coal Transportation Railway's Initiatives

• Capacity Augmentation through Dedicated Freight Corridors

• Enhancement of Axle Load to 25T

• Strengthen Port connectivity

• Enter into long term service agreements

• Enhancing Capacities for production of locomotives through PPP
