Bayside City Council has developed four affiliated trails stretching across the 17 kilometers of the coastline adjacent to Beach Road between Brighton and Beaumaris. The Bayside Coastal History Trail

The coastal area of Bayside has played host to many historical events of regional and local importance. The Bayside Coastal History Trail Signs seek to explain these important events and their historical significance and identify historical sites along the 17km of coastline.

For more information about the history of the Bayside area, visit www.bayside.vic.gov.au/trails

Elwood Life Saving Club Reg No. SK1193, Port Phillip City Collection

The first life saving club in Victoria was established at Point Ormond, Elwood in 1911. The Club’s founding members pushed for change in legislation to allow ‘open sea’ and ‘mixed sea’ bathing. Until these changes were made, sea bathing could only be done inside the many enclosed ‘bathing houses’ which dotted the shoreline of Port Phillip Bay.

Middle Brighton Baths

People today enjoy the freedom to swim whenever and wherever they wish, but this was not always the case. The baths opened on this site in 1881 and were rebuilt several times. The baths were refurbished in 1986 and again in 2001 with the addition of the restaurant and gymnasium.

Bluestone Seawall (Stories in the stones)

The stones in this and other seawalls on the foreshore were taken from the outer walls of the Old Melbourne Gaol. It is not known how many of these inscribed stones are in the seawall as the builders of the seawalls did not seem to attach much importance to their placement.

05 Green Point

Green Point has always been a major attraction for residents and visitors. The annual Bright’n’Sandy Food and Wine Festival continues the celebratory usage of Green Point begun by popular carnivals held so many years ago.

Bathing Boxes, Dendy Street Beach

The first of these iconic bathing boxes was built in 1862 and, by the turn of the century, many more were built as their popularity increased. The 82 boxes remaining are a favourite subject of photographers and artists, especially when viewed from Green Point with the Melbourne skyline in the background.

Brighton Beach Baths

Brighton Beach Baths opened in 1861. In the 1960s and 1970s the baths suffered from lack of patronage and a fire which destroyed much of the building. Council decided to refurbish the ones at Middle Brighton and demolish the Brighton Beach Baths in 1979.

Hampton Beach

Hampton Beach was a popular destination in the early days. Crowds flocked to the beach and many patronised the hotel, tea gardens, cafes and other attractions such as the pier. Today it is difficult to imagine the huge crowds with their colourful umbrellas and deck chairs, watching happy children paddling across sand banks.

Hampton Beach Renourishment

Renourishment of Hampton Beach, which had suffered an almost total loss of foreshore and vegetation, began in 1997. Sand was pumped in from a site offshore. Heavy machinery then repositioned a 50 metre wide stretch of sand to create the new beach.

09 Sandringham Band Rotunda and Gardens

Built in 1926, when outdoor band concerts provided popular entertainment, the Sandringham Band Rotunda could accommodate 25 musicians on the upper level. Gardens were created and palm trees planted beside the rotunda, which became a notable feature of the landscape.

Half Moon Bay and the Red Bluff Cliffs

From the days of the Boon wurrung people to the present day, Half Moon Bay has been a valued fishing place. Painters, photographers and film-makers have depicted the weathered desert-like cliff face of the Red Bluff, which stands at the northern end of Half Moon Bay.

The Little Beach

The Little Beach was rescued from obliteration in 1970 by conservationists and other beach lovers. Educators and scientists value the area, which was declared the first of Victoria’s coastal ‘Sites of Special Scientific Interest’.

H.M.V.S. Cerberus

Commissioned in 1866, and jointly funded by the British and Victorian Governments, Cerberus was built in England. The design was a radical departure from contemporary naval ships. She arrived in 1871 and was withdrawn from service and sold for scrap in 1923. She was finally purchased and relocated to her present site by Sandringham City Council in 1926.

13 Quiet Corner and Fishermen’s Hut

In the mid-1800s, skilled workmen cut blocks of stone from the rocky shore in the Quiet Corner area in order to construct the famous castellated wall of Black Rock House. For many years fishermen hauled their boats up above the tide line and congregated in the Fishermen’s Hut. In the 1990s Council repaired the hut which remains as a useful shelter and landmark.

The Point

Ricketts Point is well known for its rocky shore and reefs which for decades have attracted beach lovers, fishermen, snorkellers, painters, bird watchers and students of marine life. The Teahouse, constructed on the site of an earlier kiosk, attracts visitors from near and distant places.

Great Southern Hotel and Keefer’s Boat Hire

The Great Southern Hotel opened in 1889, later changing its name to Hotel Beaumaris. By the later part of the 1900s, the ‘Beaui’ had become important for entertainment. At the base of the cliff below the hotel stood the shed that housed Keefer’s Boat Hire set up by Charles Keefer.

In the summer of 1886 and 1887 Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin and Louis Abrahams walked to the Beaumaris cliffs from a rented house in rapidly developing Mentone. Roberts, McCubbin, Streeton and later Charles Conder, all painted memorable pictures of the shores of Beaumaris and Mentone, sketching and painting en plein-air (out of doors) – capturing the light, beauty and interest of the scenes.
