Coffman’s profile index presents examples of newels, balusters andhandrails for all of the Coffman families. A choice of a profile thatmatches your architectural style will lead you to a specific Coffmanfamily.
You may also go outside the family lines and combine products tocreate your own style. What ever you choose, it will be one ofAmerica’s most beautiful stairways...built with Coffman Stair Parts, the industry leader since 1874.

Ordering Specifications for Newels
NEWELSNewels serve as the main structural support of the balustrade portion of the stair. Properplacement, coupled with proper installation techniques, is critical to a structurally sound andcode compliant staircase. Newels should be placed at the top and bottom of every stair, at alldirectional changes, and at intervals of not more than 8' on level balcony runs.

STARTING NEWELSA 5" top block will alwayswork at the beginning of thestair. Larger top blocks areunnecessaryand can appeartop-heavy.
INTERMEDIATE LANDING NEWELSIntermediate landing newels will haveangled rail entering and exiting theupper square block from adjacent sides.Because the newel is basically makingup for two rise dimensions in the stair(the last rise before the intermediatelanding as well asthe first rise of thesecond straightrun), a longersquare block is necessary tokeep consistent rake railheights from the first run to the second.A newel with a minimum 13" top blockwill be required.
BALCONY LANDING NEWELSBalcony newels will have angledrail entering from the lower sideof the newel with level railexiting fromthe top ofthe upperblock.Because only one rise dimensionis involved, a 10" top block willnormally be required.
USE OF FITTINGSWITH PTP NEWELSThe use of easingsand goosenecks inPTP systems makethe need for longersquare blocksunnecessary. Order a5" top block newelat all locations.

OTP STARTING NEWEL HEIGHTS (For 34" Rake Rail Height)
Recommended heights for the following newel placements are based on a 34" rake railheight, a 7-1/2" rise, a 10" run, and a 1-1/4" tread overhang and are dependent on thelocation of the newel matching the standard location listed with the application.Variances of up to 3/4" can be expected in certain conditions and should be accounted forwhen trying to achieve minimum code heights.
NOTE: Rake rail height requirements other than 34" can be adjusted on a 1:1 basis.Example: For a 36" rake rail height, add 2" to the base number. For a 30" rake rail
height, subtract 4". Check local building codes.
NOTE: 1" movement in the newel from standard placement will changethe rail height by approximately 3/4". Moving newel placement away
from the second riser raises the rail height and moving it closer to the second riser will lower the rail height.

OVER-THE-POST NEWELS
OTP newels aremanufactured in bothdoweled bottom and squarebottom designs. Doweledbottom newels have a 1-1/2"diameter dowel designedinto the bottom of the newelthat is used to install thestarting newel into a startingstep. The height of thesenewels cannot be adjusted, making correct specificationcritical in achieving desiredrake rail height.
All Over-the-Post newelsare manufactured with a3/4" diameter pin turnedinto the top of the newelthat will be installed intothe underside of the fittingsused in the rail system.
ADJUSTABLE NEWELSAn option available in allCoffman families to thefixed length doweled newelsis the adjustable newel. These newels have a 1-1/2"diameter by 10" deep holebored into the bottom of thenewel and are shipped with aloose 19" dowel in thecarton. These newels allowthe installer to trim thenewel (up to 4") to achieveexact rake rail heights over a wide variety of applications.

BALUSTER QUANTITY AND LENGTH (For 34" Rake Rail Height)
Adjustments to rake rail heights from 34" can be accommodated on a 1:1basis. Examples: For a 36" rail height, simply add 2" to the given length andorder the nearest baluster length (rounding up if necessary). For a 30" rake railheight, subtract 4" from the given length and order the nearest baluster length(rounding up if necessary).
Baluster lengthrequirements for thebalcony will match thebalcony rail height. If anexact baluster length isnot available, simplyround up to the nextavailable length.(Example: For a 38"balcony rail height, ordera 39" baluster.)
All baluster pins are 3/4" long by 3/4"diameter and are turned with chamferedbottoms and a centered glue ring.Exception: 5015H, 5610H pins are 5/8" longby 5/8" diameter.
All pin top balusters have aguaranteed 3" minimum topstraight portion for trimmingand insertion.
Top diameter on the pin top balusterswill vary according to baluster size.

(except C-5611 which is 5/8")1-9/16" Baluster - 3/4" diameterForged - 1/2" diameter
Spacing codes vary but generally fall under the 4"sphere rule. The dimensions listed are recommendedcenter-to-center spacing measurements that willsafely comply with this code.
To obtain the quantity of balusters forindividual balcony runs, divide the length of thebalcony run by the corresponding center-to-centerspacing and round down.
All balusters fall into one of the following categories:
PIN TOP - Pin top balusters have turned, round tops thatwill be inserted into holes drilled into unplowed handrail.
SQUARE TOP - Square top balusters have a turned portion, leaving a square upper and lower portion. Installation ofsquare top balusters will require a plowed handrail.
FORGED IRON PIN TOP - Forged baluster pin tops are1/2" diameter.

RAIL AND LINEAL BALUSTRADE COMPONENTSRail and lineal balustrade components, like other lineal products, areoffered in even lengths from 4' to 16'. For rake portions of thestair, measure along the slope of the stair or use the lineal formula:Number of Treads x 13" (rounded up to the nearest even length).
LINEAL RAIL COMPONENTS consist of sub rail, shoe rail, and fillet. Shoe rail is a plowed moulding designed to acceptthe bottom of the baluster. Sub rail is used under unplowedhandrail with square top balusters in Post-to-Post systems toprovide a more substantial look to the balustrade. Fillet is afinished moulding that will be installed between the balustersin plowed rail, shoe rail and sub rail.
The minimum radius achievable with each rail profilewill depend on several factors. These factors includesuch variables as the thickness of each ply, the overallthickness of the handrail, the height of the handrail, the angle of the stair, and whether the rail is bent onthe rake or on the level portion of the stair. Theminimum recommended radius for use on both rakeand level applications are listed in the chart for eachCoffman bending rail profile.
The key components of curved rail construction are bendingrails and bending moulds which are available in all Coffmanrail profiles. Bending rail is most easily understood whenimagining a standard rail profile cut into thin, vertical strips.Bending mould is a form, moulded to the outside profile of thehandrail, that is used to cradle the bending rail as it is beingshaped to the stair.
Each ply comprising the bending rail is designed andmanufactured with a tongueand groove bead to create analignment of the plys. Whenassembled, Coffman bendingrail results in a match of thestandard rail profile.

ONE-RISE VS. TWO-RISEMost goosenecks are offered in both one-rise and two-rise versions. The one-risegooseneck is manufactured with thelower easing attached and is limited touse on stairs where the difference inrake rail height to balcony rail height is 4"(Example: 34" rake rail height to 38" balcony rail height). The corresponding two-rise gooseneck makes the same heightand/or directional change as its one-risecounterpart but is shipped with thelower easing unattached. This versatiletwo-piece design allows the installer totrim or extend the straight section of thegooseneck to a height that will work inany situation. Two-rise goosenecks workin applications where the difference inrake rail height is less than 4" (Example:34-1/2" to 38"), greater than 4"(Example: 34" to 42"), or unknown atthe time of ordering.

FITTINGSFittings, components used within rail systems, can beincorporated into both PTP and OTP stairs. In OTP railsystems, fittings are required to start the rail system, tomake directional and height transitions, to carry the railover intermediate balcony newels, and to terminate therail when using a half newel. A good check of any Over-the-Post parts list is to make certain that a fitting isordered for each newel, including half newels, in the stair.NOTE: Coffman fittings are shipped with all necessary railbolts, 1" tapered rail plugs, templates, and full instructionsto provide a quick, accurate, and professional installation.
FITTING DEFINITIONS
FITTINGORIENTATION Fitting orientation isdetermined from thebottom of the stairlooking up. All fittings inthe photo to the right areright-hand.
GOOSENECK FITTINGSGooseneck fittings are used toaccommodate transitions inheight and/or direction atintermediate and balconylandings.NOTE: It is recommended thata minimum difference of 4"between rake rail height andbalcony rail height be kept onall Over-the-Post systems.
CAP VS. NO CAPAll fittings fall into two categories: (1) those designedand manufactured with a capand (2) those manufacturedwithout a cap.
All fittings with caps have a3/4" diameter hole bored in the under sideof the cap to receive the top pin of the Over-the-Post newel. Fittings without caps aredesigned to carry the baluster line througha transition without the use of anewel. Capped fittings are clearlyidentified in both the drawings andproduct descriptions.

SUGGESTED GOOSENECKS FOR SOME COMMON APPLICATIONS
SPECIALTY FITTINGS
OVER EASINGAn over easingis designed tocarry the railsystem from therake (angled)portion of the stair to the level, balconyportion without the use of a gooseneck. This elegant, flowing look is achievedby combining the over easing with atransitional fitting such as a tandem cap.
90° UP EASING90° up easings are used to make ahorizontal to vertical 90° transition in arail system.
S-SERIES FITTINGSCoffman’s S-Seriesfittings accommodatethe continuous railcodes on partial-openstairs. Specify Right-Hand or Left-Hand(from the bottom ofthe stair looking up).
ASCENDING VOLUTES Coffman’s ascending volutes (C-7X33,C-7X38) are designed to begin theirascent much sooner than their standardcounterparts, allowing for the use of ashorter newel and shorter balusters ontop of the bullnose starting step. Thislower, more proportional beginning ofan Over-the-Post system, coupled withthe graceful, flowing transition fromthe volute to the rail, makes theascending volute an attractive additionto any stair.
COMBINING FITTINGSStandard fittings will sometimes haveto be site-assembled to complete aheight and/or directional transition.Basically all stair applications can besatisfied using a combination ofcurrently available Coffman fittings.
In the example shown of a 180°turn at balcony, you will need a two-rise gooseneck with cap that turnsright 90° to sit on top of the newelalong with a level quarterturn withouta cap to complete the 180° turn.
COPED ENDS Some Coffman families contain aCoped End which is a fitting that hasthe profile of the rail shaped, or coped, into one end of a straight piece of rail. This fitting is used in conjunction withan opening cap (Example C-7019) or agooseneck incorporating an opening cap(Example C-7097), to accomodatenonstandard angle changes.
