This year’s joint ESDCTA Championship shows for Dressage and Eventing were blessed with outstanding weather. In fact, it felt a little more like October than September. The weather and the courses made it a memorable day for our competitors, officials, and volunteers.

We can never thank our volunteers enough for helping us make this event a reality for our competitors. From the scribes, warm-up stewards and score runners in dressage, our cross-country stewards, starters, fence judges, and our stadium stewards, jump crew, and timers, and all of those who helped before the event with set-up, decorations, flagging the course, etc., running a horse trials is always a huge undertaking and impossible without our volunteers. Thank you to all from ESDCTA.

This year’s event had a slightly different element in that we ran both a championship horse trials for our qualified members and a schooling horse trials open to all. We had a total of 39 entries this year and look forward to doubling those entries next year as we spread the word about the open schooling horse trials to all.

It’s that time of year: sweaters and jackets, hot cider, and pumpkin pies and – BLANKETING!The same questions year in and year out, haunt us at this time of year. Should I let my horse go naked this winter and just let him be a horse or should I blanket and have the extra time and effort, not to mention expense? When do I start to blanket so he does not start growing a big coat and I miss the opportunity, and once I do, is it a done deal until spring?Well, in my research I found the answers all in one place: The Rutgers Cooperative Extension Office. The office’s web site has this article archived: “To Blanket or Not to Blanket.” And, it is written by ESDCTA’s very own Board of Trustees member, Carey A. Williams, PhD, Extension Specialist in Equine Management, along with Animal Doctoral Student, Nettie Liburt, MS.The article is clear and concise and covers all the questions we seem to discuss annually, regardless of the decisions we made the year before. Here are some of the points discussed:• If a horse is clipped, whether a trace, full

body, or hunter clip, it needs to be blanketed.• Once you start to sheet or blanket, it must

continue for the entire season.• More hay will keep horses warmer.• When blanketing, you may need more than

one kind of blanket to transition to different temperatures.

• Don’t put a blanket on a wet horse or it will be even colder. Use a cooler to dry the horse out first.

• Overweight horses have more insulation, underweight horses do not and may need to be blanketed earlier on in the season.

• Don’t leave the blanket on all winter without taking it off regularly and seeing what’s going on underneath.

• Make sure the blankets and sheets fit well to avoid sores and discomfort.

• If you don’t start to blanket, the horse will grow its natural coat.

• Ice balls and frozen whiskers do not mean the horse is not weathering the cold.

To read the complete article, go to: www. http://njaes.rutgers.edu/pubs/publication.asp?pid=FS1081. It is well worth it. I am going

to share it with my boarders. Of course, every horse is an individual, so if you have questions, direct them to your veterinarian. Only she or he can answer the specific questions you have that cover the nuances of your own horse’s health.I blanket my horses. They always have something on, even if it is just a fly sheet in the summer. One of mine makes Peanut’s PigPen look like he’s ready for a stroll down the red carpet. If there is a patch of dirt or a mud hole in the pasture, that is where you will find him, and not just once a day. My mare, dubbed the Princessa by one of my boarders, just gets the royal treatment. But despite these reasons, I blanket, so I have a somewhat clean horse when I go to grab somebody for a ride. It’s not that I don’t groom, or I am lazy. I love to groom. But there are groomings that take 20 minutes max and then there are groomings that can take an hour before you want to put a saddle pad and saddle on the horse. Blanketing definitely helps minimize the latter. But it is expensive. I must have five blankets for each horse that are used throughout the season, depending upon the weather and temperatures. (Much to Howard’s chagrin.) I also have riding blankets for the winter. There are days, however, that I do admit that I don’t need them all. You can spend less and still do right by your horse. The important thing is to be prepared for the change in season and make that decision early on so your horse is well-protected and comfortable regardless of the route you take. Now, it’s time to stock up on hand warmers and toe warmers for me!

We know you are busy and being pulled in many directions, but the ESDCTA needs you. We are a volunteer organization that won’t survive without volunteers – no more shows, clinics, newsletter, or local community. Even if you can only commit 1 hour a month (or 1 hour a year), you can make a difference to your club. We need writers for the newsletter, volunteers at our horse shows, members for our committees, and even just input about our offerings. We want the ESDCTA to meet your needs, but we don’t know what they are unless you get involved – or just speak up. Your opinions are appreciated and your skills are valued. Contact any of us on page 2 of this newsletter to help us help you.

ESDCTA has enjoyed another wonderful season of dressage and eventing activities and much of

that success is dependent upon the support we receive from our sponsors. We would like to

acknowledge and thank them for their generous support.

We urge our members to thank our sponsors by supporting their businesses.

Visiting cemeteries may not be everyone’s idea of a good time, but if you’re looking for a slightly different itinerary for your travels, keep reading.

Blackjack: He is famous for his role as the rider-less horse in not only President Kennedy’s funeral (where he misbehaved quite noticeably), but that of Presidents Hoover and Johnson, and General MacArthur. He also served in thousands of ordinary veteran funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. When he died in 1976 at age 29, his ashes were conveyed with full military honors to his gravesite near the flag pole at Summerall Field in Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Justin Morgan (aka Figure): The sire of the Morgan breed, Figure, died in 1821 at the ripe old age of 32. Despite his small stature, he proved his worth by out-pulling, out-working, and out-racing all competition, as well as being a good family horse. He is really buried at Harolyn Hill Farm in Tunbridge, VT, where Figure spent his last years, but there is a memorial marker not far.

Man o’ War: This famous racehorse is buried at the entrance of the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. He was born during WWI (hence his name) and won 20 out of 21 races. He died in 1947. Next to him lies War Admiral, another stellar speed demon.

Marengo: Napoleon’s famous white horse (and his favorite), who died in 1832, wasn’t buried, but instead, his skeleton was articulated. And two of his hooves were made into snuffboxes! He “resides” in the National Army Museum, London, England.

Misty of Chincoteague: Who doesn’t know the true story of Misty written by Marguerite Henry? Misty was originally sold to Ms. Henry for the sum of $150 and the agreement that the original owners’ (the Beebe’s) two children would also be included in the book. Misty died in 1972. She was stuffed, and along with her foal, Stormy, are on display at the Beebe’s old house in Chincoteague, VA, in the same spot where she gave birth to Stormy.

CENTERLINEDressage News

WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT YOU?Our 2013 show season is winding down. The ESDCTA Dressage and Eventing Championship show was held Sept 15; a lovely fall day that was just perfect riding weather. Soon the regional dressage and area eventing championships will be finished and it’ll be time to take a bit of a break before ramping up for next season. I’m sure many of our members are training hard to move up a level next year. There are so many people to be thanked for contributing to the success of our shows. First and foremost our unbelievably committed volunteers who show up cheerfully show after show to set up the rings and jumps, decorate the courses, then staff the shows, and then stay on to help clean up at the end of the day. It’s staggering how much work is required to present a well-run horse show. I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention that much of the show management is done by members who volunteer many, many hours to plan and manage the shows. Of course no show would need to be set up or staffed if it wasn’t for all the competitors who support our events thru their entries. We all know how much hard work and expense goes into the practice, training, planning, braiding, and trailering just to get to the show grounds. And this is before the stress of actually riding down center line, or out of the start box and performing in front everyone. It’s a true testament to our members’ dedication to the sport. But ESDCTA is much more than horse shows. We’re a wonderfully diverse group of people with very different skills, assets, and interests who have joined together because we share a common interest in equestrian sports. Our strength as an organization lies in bringing together this diverse set of skills to develop a broad range of both fun activities and more serious events which satisfy the group as a whole. Ideally, the organization will be dynamic, interesting and have such “value added” that people will feel that they want to join ESDCTA so they can enjoy all of these benefits. In order to become the organization we’d like to be, we need your help and input with both ideas and actions.I’m looking forward to an exciting new season and I’m asking that the members contact me with ideas for club activities you feel would be most productive. Do you want more shows? Do you want multiple clinics and educational programs throughout the season? Do you want a large multi-day symposium? Do you want a big party where we could have fun with other members we rarely get to see? Eventers, what do you want? One of my personal goals as chair of the Dressage Committee is to develop bonds between the local professionals and ESDCTA. They are a valuable resource in our community and we should be able to develop a strong and mutually beneficial relationship. I’m looking forward to an exciting 2014 season and with your help ESDCTA will grow, expand, and improve.Terry Masters
