14 May 2015 14 May 2015 College Principal’s Message Is it really only Week 4? With so much activity happening around our busy College it is timely to reflect on the myriad of opportunities which we offer our students at Stretton. All of these activities happen due to passionate engagement, and a belief in our young people. It is a belief that our students deserve the best – and anything less is unthinkable! We are still celebrating and savouring our first ever etching on the Regional Cross Country trophy! Congratulations to our District Cross Country team. For the first time in our short history, we have blitzed the other schools who have coveted this triumph for far too long, and we are enjoying our first year as District Cross Country CHAMPIONS! Congratulations to our champion students and teachers who made this desire a very strong reality. Your behaviour was exemplary on the day; your efforts were amazing; you were great ambassadors of our College values in every way! We are preparing also for our MUSICAL extravaganza to be held at Logan Entertainment Centre, Friday 29th/Saturday 30th May. We have close to 200 students involved across P-12. There is a real buzz in the Stretton air at the moment, as we excitedly anticipate the adrenalin of Opening Night. Make sure you support our College community by coming along and enjoying a wonderful night of student and staff talent! I cannot think of a better description for the things I see around our campuses on a daily basis than the word ENTHUSIASM. Our enthusiasm for almost everything at Stretton remains unabated. You just can’t avoid the uplifting power of Stretton SPIRIT in action. It inhabits our soul as a school. Understandably, much of my time as Executive Principal is absorbed with planning (alongside many other outstanding contributors) the present and future directions of the College. In such circumstances, it could be easy to forget the daily routines and adventures of College life but I always try to make sure that I stay connected to all of those student activities giving life and vitality to our school. There is so much going on virtually all of the time, that I am continually astounded by the creativity and passion, not just of our many talented and committed students, but of the countless numbers of staff who nurture, encourage and support all of their aspirations beyond the formal curriculum learning. Everywhere, I see evidence of what we have been calling for some time a “true” education. Sporting successes, concerts, assemblies, performances and so on provide me with opportunities to engage with the lives of students. Far from being ‘my job’ they enable me to enjoy everything that Stretton has to offer. I am inspired and energized by the PULSE of our school, and I am always struck by the sense of enjoyment, participation and fulfilment that the students exhibit. On a daily basis, I witness students who are simply happy, loving being part of their school, and being naturally respectful, kind and affectionate towards each other. This is the core of what we value in an age were isolation and disconnection can be a constant presence. I feel truly blessed to be Principal of this great College. I feel truly optimistic about the ‘shared enthusiasms’ which are such a feature of our wonderful school. Enthusiasm might seem such a bland, vague, non-specific word, but when you experience what I do throughout the busy year of growth and development, no word for me works quite as well. Our Stretton version of this word is an irresistible and motivating force. Cross Country and Sport Success

Our Stinger sports program has been raising the fitness andskill levels of our students in recent years. We have graduallyclimbed the ladder of success at District carnivals until onTuesday May 5, our Cross Country team won our firstKarawatha District Carnival. A full wrap up is below in thenewsletter. This win exemplified the power of a united team. Our team filled the races, performed at their best and theirbehaviour off the track was everything you would expect ofthis fine group of young athletes. Congratulations to all thecompetitors, staff who supported them to attend and performand particularly Ms Jansen whose drive and passion for sportconstantly inspires our staff and students.

Congratulations to Jenna Lawrence who played in the MetWest U15 Netball team that won the State title recently. Shehas been named as a shadow for the State team.

Our District Premiership winning Year7/8 touch team wereunfortunately beaten by a very well drilled and talented team inthe first round of the Metro finals. Despite being behind for mostof the match they demonstrated the Stretton SPIRIT throughoutthe match and never gave up.

Reading — Giving children ahead start in life

Our whole school reading focus continuesto be an emphasis in all Prep to Year 6classrooms and it has been wonderful to

hear feedback from teachers about the reading successes thatthey are seeing in their classrooms.

I can’t emphasise enough the importance of reading, in givinga child a head start in life. When both the school and parentswork together on reading the rewards are even greater. Arecent study by Melbourne University explored the connectionsbetween parents reading to their young children and theirchild’s later reading and other cognitive skills. Amongst theresults the study found that:

The study also found that these effects were not related toa child’s family background or home environment. Overall thestudy found that parental reading to children increases a child’sreading and other cognitive skills at least up to the age of 10-11and that the benefits of this continue for life.

In the last newsletter, I gave some tips about how parents couldsupport reading at home. Don’t forget that your child’s teachercan also support you with ideas and suggestions.

Before school routines

Just a quick reminder about before school routines —Supervision of students on school grounds before schoolcommences at 8:15am. We would encourage any family whoneeds to have their children at school prior to 8:15am to pleaseinvestigate using before school care. However, if your child isat school prior to 8:15am they need to be seated quietly inthe under covered area. For safety, children should not hangaround the gate or front entrance, but go straight to the undercovered area and sit down quietly.

As you would appreciate parking in and around the schoolduring both the morning drop off and afternoon pick up timescan be quite congested. We ask that parents only park in themarked parking bays and act with courtesy and patience whenin the car park area and when looking/waiting for a car space.

NAPLAN

This week nearly 700 Stretton Studentsfrom across Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 haveparticipated in the National AssessmentProgram for Literacy and Numeracy. Thefour tests undertaken provide valuableinformation to schools, parents and

governments to understand how best to improve literacy andnumeracy outcomes for our students. The NAPLAN Reading,Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy tests are notdesigned to “pass” or “fail”, but rather provide details formeasuring progress.

Schools and teachers use this NAPLAN data to improveteaching and learning in your child’s classrooms. At Stretton,we do not teach to this test, but rather use the information fromthem to ensure our programs are well balanced and providecritical literacy and numeracy skills as the critical foundationfor student learning, and for their productive and rewardingparticipation in the community.

Later in the year, parents will receive a NAPLAN report onhow well your child is performing in literacy and numeracy,as measured against the national average. This report will beissued from the Australian Curriculum and AssessmentAuthority (ACARA) via the College. The same report format isused for every student in Australia. Individual student results arestrictly confidential.

Thank you to parents and families who have supported theirchild in preparation for tests this week in making sure that theywere well rested, organised and on-time to school. This madethe running of the tests smooth and (relatively) stress free.

College Musical

The synergy created by our outstanding Stretton Musical teamis the foundation for what promises to be the most spectacularperformance to wow audiences at Logan Entertainment centreon May 29-30.

Books for BreakfastA huge thanks to Ms Jones for reading a story from ‘Yertle theTurtle’ by Dr. Seuss at Books for Breakfast. The rhyming andrhythm patterns really enabled us to be captivated the wholetime. Here is a little taste of what you may have missed out onif you weren’t there:

On the far-away island of Sala-ma-Sond,Yertle the Turtle was king of the pond.A nice little pond. It was clean. It was neat. The water was warm. There was plenty to eat.The turtles had everything turtles might need. And they were all happy. Quite happy indeed.

Next week, Eden and Elijah will be reading ‘Imagine a Day’by Sarah Thomson. This beautiful book is illustrated with acollection of abstract paintings from the famous painter RobGonsalves. The story encourages the reader to think differentlyabout their surroundings and use their imaginations.

Come along next week, Tuesday 12th at 8:15am in the GowanLibrary to be inspired with the love of reading.

Year 11 Hospitality ExcursionThe Year 11 Hospitality students recently participated in anexcursion to some of Brisbane’s premier culinaryestablishments. The three locations included ARIA Restaurant,at Riverside; IL Centro Restaurant, a modern Italian; and The

Stamford Plaza, one of Australia’s leading hotels. This wasa most valuable learning experience for all and revealed theinner workings of the hospitality industry from a ‘real world’perspective. From a restaurant and hotel point of view itpresented a glimpse of future potential career opportunitiesavailable to students.

ARIA Restaurant, located on Eagle Street Pier in Brisbane’sCBD, is owned by celebrity chef ‘Matt Moran’. The group wasprivileged to be escorted on a personal tour that outlined anddetailed the operations of the bar, the restaurant and the backof house kitchen facilities in this ‘fine dining’ restaurant. Theestablishment has built its reputation with high expectationsof service and quality of food, which were displayed at alltimes during the visit. The requirements and importance of time, quality and hospitality of staff towards customers at all timeswas evident. Students were astonished to hear that the averagedining bill for a customer was $150-$200 per person, with themost expensive bottle of wine costing a staggering $6,000!

Our second industry visit was Il Centro Restaurant, which pridesitself on quality, modern Italian cuisine overlooking the BrisbaneRiver. Its location is first rate and the food impeccable. Wewere very welcomed by the owner and manager, and observedthe tapas bar and kitchens. A demonstration of styles andtechniques by the resident coffee barista provided a perfectinsight for those students completing the Certificate IIHospitality, Prepare & Serve Espresso. The highlight of the visitwas the unexpected taster serving of the Il Centro’s signaturedish, “Sand Crab Lasagne”.

The final destination of the excursion was The Stamford PlazaHotel. The visit to this 5-Star Hotel included a tour of severallarge function rooms, followed by a stroll through several ofthe hotel celebrity suites which command $2000-$4000 pernight. The students were excited to hear stories of some ofthe celebrities who have slept in the suites. Nicole Kidman,Lady Gaga…and even the Prime Minister of China to namea few! Career opportunities were discussed with current staff, including security requirements within a large operating hotel, housekeeping of rooms and ensuring customers are wellcatered for.

A fitting end to the excursion was lunch at The Stamford Plaza’sJapanese Teppanyaki Bar. Students enjoyed a style of servicevery different to what they are used to. Cooking occurs on aBBQ in front of them whilst dining. This was an entertaining andinteractive service style and students were required to catchtheir own bowls of rice! Thankfully all performed very well.

As the attending member of staff for the excursion, I wouldlike to thank ARIA Restaurant, IL Centro Restaurant, and TheStamford Plaza Hotel for their generosity. Secondly, I wouldlike to thank Ms Kelly Dent (teacher-aide) for her support; andfinally commend the participating students for their maturity, engagement and energy in making this excursion a completesuccess. It far exceeded our expectations.

Veto CupOn Monday, the 4th of May our seniorboy’s football team played againstRedbank Plains High School in the quarterfinal of the inaugural Veto Cup. It was agame played in the usual Stretton Spirit wehave come to know from our sporting teams and I am pleasedto announce the boys came away with a very hard fought win.

The game started very well for us with a penalty decision goingour way early in the first half which our captain Alistair Douglascalmly put away to give us a 1 nil lead. What followed was amixture of complacency on our part and a lift in intensity onRedbank’s part as we were shocked into conceding 2 goals, one each side of half time which left us starting the barrel of a2-1 defeat.

Luckily our constant pressure rewarded us in the last 5 minutesof the game with Loughlin Sharma stepping up and pokinghome a much deserved equaliser, taking the game to goldengoal extra time.

Extra time flew by and with no team taking their chances…thegame was destined for penalties.

As light was fading penalties began with both teams missingearly penalties. Luckily for us our rock in goals, Stefan Grujicicpulled off a crucial 5 penalty save which gave Sameer Ahmadthe chance to finish the game which he took with open armsslotting home the winning spot kick and taking us into thesemi-finals of the Veto Cup.

Man of the match: Loughlin Sharma

victorious in every game they put their heart and soul into everygame until the end.

The Year 5 girls only won one out of four games and werenarrowly defeated in two games by both Algester and Kurabywith a score of 1 – nil. The victory against Runcorn was sweetwith a score of 1 – nil. At the end of each game they celebratedwhether they won or lost. I was excited to see the improvementthis team had made since Gala Day 1.

Mackenzie Cuthbert played an outstanding game of defencethroughout the day resulting in her being awarded Player of theDay for the Year 5 division of Gala Day 2. Well done, Mackenzie!

The Year 6A squad had a more successful day experiencingonly one defeat and that was against Yeronga 1 with a scoreof 1 – nil while their second game against Sunnybank Hills wasa nil all draw. They were victorious in their final game againstBrisbane Christian College with a score of 1- nil.

The selection of a Player of the Day for this team proved tobe quite difficult because the whole squad played so well.In the end, Sarenyia Scurr-Passfield-Moore was selected forher overall skill and perseverance throughout each game. Welldone, Sarenyia!

A big thank you needs to go to our Illaweena support teamof Courtney Black, Megan Cole, Emma Brashaw and CaraConfessore for the help and support given to both teamsthroughout the day.

Jenna’s performance in the finals showcased her skill and talentand I am pleased to say that Jenna was called up as a shadowplayer for the GD/WD positions.

She improved her game play over the 4 days and applied everybit of feedback to the grand final game. Jenna was the onlybottom age player to be named in the Queensland squad – Welldone Jenna!
