Silent Prayer

As Jesus offered up prayers and supplications to you, O God,

we cry out to you today. You know our losses and our fears.

You understand our suffering and pain. We wish to see Jesus,

to know the healing touch felt by so many.

Lift us up and draw us to yourself as we worship in this hour. Amen.

Call to Worship

Leader: Nothing we can ever say will do justice to the God who

cherishes and nurtures us.

People: Nothing we can ever do will be sufficient thanks for

the God who redeems us.

Leader: Therefore when you come to worship, praise and exult

as much as you can.

People: Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful! Is the God of earth

and heaven!

Leader: Let everyone praise the grace of the Lord.

People: The Lord’s name be praised!

*Hymn: “Christ is Made the Sure Foundation” PH #417

*Prayer of Confession (unison)

Holy God, source of all Mercy and Grace: we confess that all too

often we assume we have it made and there is no need to

advance in our faith. And because the poor are always with us,

we believe we can ignore them. We want Jesus to be with us,

but not if it means a lot of struggle and pain.

Forgive us, God of Mercy, and repair our broken lives. You have

rearranged the price tags on everything we value. Now help us

to let go of all that holds us back. Fill us, our homes and

churches, the whole world, with the abundant love of Christ

until all are made new. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

*Words of Assurance

Leader: At morning, noon and sunset, God is available to those

who sincerely desire the healing grace of Christ Jesus.

Do not hide away. Come, stand in the open, look up and

be blessed by the goodness of God’s mercy which falls

freely like sunshine and rain.

Page 5: Collingswood Presbyterian ChurchNov 03, 2012  · COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY March 17, 2013 5th Sunday in Lent ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME Silent Prayer

People: The steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to

everlasting.

Leader: Sisters and Brothers, believe the good news of the Gospel.

People: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen!

*Congregational Response - “Lord, Have Mercy Upon Us” PH #574

*Sharing of the Peace Leader: As Christ has offered forgiveness to us, let us offer that forgiveness to one another. The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

*Hymn: “Jesus The Very Thought of Thee” PH #310

Gospel Lesson: John 12:1-8 (p.980)

Sermon: “What a Spendthrift!” The Rev. Eloise A. Cowherd

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith from The Heidelberg Catechism

Leader: What is your only comfort, in life and in death?

People: That I belong—body and soul, in life and in death—

not to myself but to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ,

who at the cost of his own blood has fully paid for all

my sins and has completely freed me from the

dominion of the devil; that he protects me so well that

without the will of my Father in heaven not a hair can

fall from my head; indeed, that everything must fit his

purpose for my salvation. Therefore, by his Holy

Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me

wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live

for him.

Leader: How many things must you know that you may live

and die in the blessedness of this comfort?

People: Three. First, the greatness of my sin and wretchedness.

Second, how I am freed from all my sins and their

wretched consequences. Third, what gratitude I owe to

God for such redemption.

Offering What costly treasures do we have that are good enough to

offer to Jesus Christ? How sacrificial are our offerings of thanksgiving? Let us bring our gifts, not out of habit or as

reluctant duty, but as joyous opportunity to share in the work to which Christ summons the church and every member.

Children in Pre-K-5th grade will be leaving for

Sunday School and can be picked up in Calvin Hall

following service. This week the Sunday School

children will be studying the Trinity

and how God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are

one. We will be using the Shamrock to illustrate this. We

will also have a few treats as well.

Last week, the children studied Mark 10:13-16. They learned how Jesus

taught the disciples that in order to enter the kingdom of God everyone

must receive it as a little child and how Jesus welcomed and blessed the

children. **We are in need of Sunday School teachers for Spring & Summer**

Please see Gretchen Kolecki if you would like to help.

**We need helpers for the Easter Egg Hunt** Please see Gretchen Kolecki if you would like to help.

**We are in need of WRAPPED Easter candies for the Easter Egg Hunt**

If you would like to donate some, please leave the candy in/or outside Gretchen Kolecki’s office. Thank you for your kindness.

What Now? Marriage Equality for Presbyterians and Everyone Else

A Covenant Network Regional Conference

Saturday, April 6, 2013, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. First Presbyterian Church, NYC

Attorney David Boies, along with co-lead counsel, brought a landmark civil rights case to trial in 2010 challenging California’s Proposition 8. Judges at both the federal district and appellate levels have concluded that Proposition 8 vio-lates the U.S. Constitution. The case will be argued before the United States Su-preme Court on March 26th with a ruling expected in June.

Attorney Doug Nave has argued numerous cases in Presbyterian Church courts for LGBT equality. His speech, “Blest be the Ties?,” will focus on marriage equality in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

Dear Deacons, Elders, and Members of CPC,

THANK YOU!

Your kindness is appreciated very much.

Tears were replaced with a smile and I had a lightness in my heart as I read the note from you during my darkest hours. Collingswood has always been by my side for so many of life’s little “side-journeys” with John and me. I will always remember you - thank you for your prayers and cards.

May God Bless,

Shanna Morascini
