Try layering techniques for endless possibilities. Burnishing Build up light layers using any type of mark making. Continue adding until surface appears waxy & smooth. Oil or Alcohol Watercolor Wash Use a cotton ball or cotton swab soaked in baby oil or rubbing alcohol to smear and blend colored pencil marks on paper. Apply a watercolor wash on paper. Once dry, layer colored pencil over the top. Scumbling Crosshatching Apply controlled scribbled marks, layering color as you go to build value and texture. Lay down a layer of directional lines. Then, go over the same area with lines in the opposite direction. Scraping Use X-ACTO knife on a burnished surface to scrape away areas of pigment. Directional Lines Draw lightly in one direction in swift, even strokes. Layer colors to add complexity and depth.
