On April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina as the first saint of the new millenium. He had a special love for her because he, too, came from Poland. The Pope

also established the 2nd Sunday of Easter—which is the end of the Easter Octave—as Divine Mercy Sunday, just as Jesus had requested in His messages to Saint Faustina!

More about the Paschal Candle: It is “the symbol of the light of Christ, rising in glory, scattering the dark-ness of our hearts and minds.” (US Conference of Catholic Bishops, “18 Questions on the Paschal Triduum”) In the Easter Vigil, it is used in the blessing of water which is then used to sprinkle the congregation.

During the entire Easter Season, the candle is kept in the sanctuary of the church, either by the ambo (where the Scripture is read at Mass) or the altar. After the Easter Season, is it moved out of the sanctuary.
