FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - MEDIA CONTACT: Sarah Oliver, (651) 296-5956 Senator Carla Nelson District 26 Serving Olmsted County Office: 117 State Office Bldg., Saint Paul, Minnesota 55155 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 24, 2015 TAX CREDIT FOR COMBAT VETERANS SET TO EXPIRE (St. Paul, MN) Combat veterans in Minnesota could miss out on hundreds of dollars of savings as the 2011 Combat Service Tax Credit is set to expire. Every year, Minnesota offers a tax credit for military service in a combat zone, worth $120 for each month of service. After August 15, service that took place in 2011 will no longer be eligible for the credit. Senator Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) is encouraging everyone to help get the word out so veterans are aware of this deadline. “These heroes put themselves in harm’s way for our country,” said Sen. Nelson. “Each year veterans miss out on this credit simply because they are not aware of it. It’s our responsibility to make sure that no longer happens. If you know a veteran who may qualify for this credit, please share this news with them.” “Our veterans give all, they deserve our best,” continued Sen. Nelson. “That is why I authored legislation that included incentives for businesses to hire veterans, and exempted military pensions from Minnesota income taxes. I am disappointed those proposals stalled, but will continue to work for passage so our veterans can benefit from these initiatives.” Veterans must meet three qualifications to claim the 2011 combat zone military service tax credit: They must have served in a combat zone or hazardous-duty zone in 2011. They must have lived in Minnesota during your time of service. They must have received combat pay. To claim the credit, simply fill out a 2011 Form M99, the Credit for Military Service in aCombat Zone form. The credit is also available for 2012, 2013, and 2014, but these credits are not expiring this year. Individuals with questions about this tax credit should contact the office of Sen. Nelson at 651-296-4848, or the Department of Revenue at 1-800-652-9094. ###
