Sample 2-Night Itinerary

DAY 1

MORNING Arrive at Gander International Airport (YQX) where you will be met by a Community Host, your knowledgeable guide and soon-to-be “friend from away.”

Tour the airport, which served as an

important strategic location during World War II and until recently was the refueling point for overseas flights. For those with an interest in history, architecture, and design, marvel at the airport’s mid-century International Lounge, which offers a truly distinctive glimpse into a bygone era—one that saw the likes of notables such as Frank Sinatra, Fidel Castro, and Queen Elizabeth II pass through its doors.

After acquainting yourself with Gander International Airport, find your way over to the North Atlantic Aviation Museum. With hundreds of artifacts from large aircraft to World War II flight simulators, the museum boasts of Gander’s tremendous contribution to aviation both during the war, and in the years that followed. Before completing your journey to Fogo Island, take time to visit the Mayor’s Office, where you can see a piece of steel from the World Trade Center, donated in recognition of the extraordinary contributions of Gander and its community.

DINNER (LUNCH) Refuel at The Jumping Bean, a local café owned and operated by Fogo Islanders. Enjoy freshly ground coffee, artisanal sandwiches and hearty soups made fresh for your journey onward to Farewell.

AFTERNOON Having taken in the remarkable history of the town once known as the “Crossroads of the World,” allow your imagination to wander as you are escorted to the Farewell Ferry Terminal. Board the ferry to Fogo Island; while at sea, keep an eye out for soaring seabirds and sea creatures.

Upon completing the crossing, allow the Island to reveal itself on the 30-minute drive through outport communities as you make your way off to your refuge, Fogo Island Inn. Take time for exploration. Revel in the natural beauty found around every bend.

Check into Fogo Island Inn, a traditional yet contemporary masterpiece of modern architecture and design. The Inn was named as Travel & Leisure’s Best Resort Hotel in Canada in 2017 and 2018, as well as the Top Hotel in Canada in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2017-2018.

LATE AFTERNOON Spend a few moments relaxing in your room.

When you’re ready, find your way down to the Lounge and enjoy a cocktail in the Lounge or sample from our extensive wine collection influenced by the best Canadian wines and Fogo Island’s traditional trading partners (Italy, France, Spain and Portugal).

SUPPER Dine on the fresh flavours and the bounty of land and sea as supper is prepared by Fogo Island Inn’s Executive Chef Jonathan Gushue and his culinary team in the Inn’s Dining Room.

LATE EVENING After supper, unwind in the wood fired sauna

and enjoy a roof top view of the infinite, dizzying night sky. Be reminded that nature is truly eternal. Catch a film in the Inn’s Cinema before tucking in for the night to the rumble of the tumultuous North Atlantic just beyond your window.

DAY 2 DAYBREAK Greet the sun as she rises and find a

handmade wooden Daybreak Tray outside your door filled with coffee, tea and fresh pastries. Linger.

MORNING Breakfast is served in the Dining Room at

your leisure. 10:00AM Meet your Community Host in the lobby for

your island orientation. Be prepared for fresh perspectives and insights; stories and laughter during your half-a-day outing with one of our Community Hosts. Allow yourself to be oriented to this “salty Narnia” by the people of the place - who have retained their wild heritage as well as their intellectual heritage; whose sense of self comes from a deep historical sense of landscape and seascape; people who are profoundly at home on this “edge of the known.”

DINNER (LUNCH) Lunch is served back at the Inn in the Dining

Room. AFTERNOON Let the direction of the wind help you decide

whether to take a hike up Brimstone Head, one of the four corners of the flat Earth or amble along Lion’s Den trail, which follows the coastline through the abandoned communities of Eastern Tickle and Lion’s Den. Trace the footsteps of the Irish settlers along the northeast coast of the island on Turpin’s Trail or follow Oliver’s Cove headed to the Devils Rocking chair, immersing yourself in some of the geological marvels of the Island.

SUPPER Supper is served in the Dining Room. EVENING Before retiring to your room, settle around

the fire with a hot cup of tea, a deck of cards, and great company with new friends. Learn how to play the old traditional Newfoundland game of 120’s. Or, soak tired but contented muscles in our roof top sauna and hot tubs as you gaze up at the infinite starry sky.

DAY 3 DAYBREAK Meet another day with your Daybreak Tray.

Ease into the morning gradually. MORNING Fortify yourself with a farewell breakfast in

the Dining Room. DEPARTURE Depart Fogo Island Inn for the journey

homewards.
