University of Florida President
Dr. W. Kent Fuchs
Dr. Kent Fuchs became the 12th President of the University of Florida in January 2015. Building on many years of excellence and focused leadership, the university has reached its goal of joining the nation’s top-ten public research universities.
Dr. Fuchs has set UF on a path to joining the top-five public research universities and becoming the nation’s number one university for comprehensive excellence. UF is working toward those goals through the creation of 500 new faculty positions, the addition of advanced and beautiful university facilities and an ongoing $3 billion fundraising campaign.
Previous to the UF presidency, Dr. Fuchs was provost of Cornell University. He has served in academic leadership positions and as a faculty member of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell, Purdue and the University of Illinois.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Association for Computing Machinery, and has received numerous awards for teaching and research.
O
President Fuchs earned his doctorate in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois, and a Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. He credits divinity school with teaching him communication and community-building skills, and to balance his innately analytic perspective with a deep appreciation for human relationships. He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Duke University.
Dr. Fuchs is married to Linda Moskeland Fuchs, an art historian whose scholarship centers on the sculpture of sarcophagi created in the first centuries of Christian art-making. Mrs. Fuchs has two master’s degrees in art history, from the University of Chicago and Cornell, and a third in Biblical studies, from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. The Fuchses have three sons, a daughter, and three grandchildren.
Born on an Oklahoma farm in 1954, President Fuchs spent much of his youth in Alaska before moving to Miami, where he graduated from Miami Killian Senior High School.
Greetings from the President
n behalf of the University of Florida and our administration, faculty and staff, I would like to
extend my heartfelt congratulations to you, the Class of 2018, and to your family and friends.
UF’s commencement ceremonies celebrate your considerable accomplishment in completing a degree program at one of the world’s great universities. I share your pride and excitement, and I am confident that your degree – and the skills and experience you acquired while at this university – will serve you well in your careers and lives.
It has been a privilege to have you as a part of our community, and the university is better for your time here. I hope you remain connected to UF as active alumni and members of The Gator Nation.
Good luck, best wishes, and Go Gators!
W. Kent Fuchs

Yvette M. Miley
Linda Fischer Wells
Veteran journalist Yvette Miley graduated from UF in 1985 with a degree in broadcasting. Today she is senior vice president of NBC News and MSNBC.
Throughout her 26-year tenure at NBC Universal, Ms. Miley has mentored, coached and inspired hundreds of journalists,
broadcast producers, on-air correspondents and anchors. She uses her keen news sense to lead weekend, overnights and early morning programming.
She is a respected industry leader and a powerful advocate for racial and gender diversity. In 2015, she was named head of diversity and inclusion for both MSNBC and NBC News, and charged with retention and recruitment of the best and the brightest for the news group. She also served as the executive editor of thegrio.com — a website targeting African-Americans. In 2016, Ms. Miley was tapped to serve as executive-in-charge of NBC OUT, a leading NBC News digital platform dedicated to the LGBTQ community.
Ms. Miley is known for her control-room management skills and ability to handle breaking news. She has won numerous awards, including an Emmy Award for MSNBC and NBC’s coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage, and an Emmy and a national Edward R. Murrow Award for her role during coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing. She also won the duPont-Columbia Award and a Peabody Award for coverage of Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
In May 2017, Ms. Miley received the prestigious National Association of Black Journalists’ Chuck Stone Lifetime Achievement Award and became a founding member of the UF College of Journalism and Communications Dean’s Leadership Council.
The National Press Club recognized Ms. Miley in 2016 for her work mentoring others in the industry and, in 2013, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Urban League of Palm Beach County, Fla., for her work in the community. A native of Riviera Beach, Fla., she strives to positively impact thousands of lives in her home town and South Florida through youth recreation programs, including The Salvation Army and Urban League. She is also an active participant in Relay for Life to honor her mother who is a 20-year cancer survivor.
Native Floridian Linda Wells was born in Key West and was raised in Clearwater. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from UF, graduating with high honors. Her education then took her to the other coast where she earned her MA in political science from the University of Washington. She then
earned a law degree from George Washington University Law School, which she attended at night while working for the U.S. Census Bureau and Justice Department’s Law Enforcement Assistance Administration.
While residing in Washington D.C., she re-met an old Gator friend, Charley Wells, who was working for the U.S. Department of Justice. They were married in Washington, D.C., in 1969, after checking in with Gator friends. They honeymooned in Europe [where they contracted the Hong Kong Flu], returned to Florida and soon had three children, Talley, Shelley and Ashley.
Linda stayed home with the children for several years, during which time she became a founding director of Orlando’s Christian Service Center. She practiced law with Carlton Fields’ Orlando office, serving on various Orange County Bar committees, chairing a grievance committee, and serving as a guardian ad Litem, which she continues to do. When Charley was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court, she became involved with the Tallahassee Bar Association, Supreme Court Historical Society and Docents. She has chaired the advisory committee to UF’s Department of Religion for many years, served on the UF Foundation Board and two presidential selection committees. Linda has served on the Bethune-Cookman University Board of Trustees for a decade, where she has received an honorary doctorate.
While she has enjoyed these civic and professional endeavors, her delight is in her family—a caring, sharing, smart and fun husband, three children and eight grandchildren, who live in Gainesville, Atlantic Beach and Atlanta. “All in all,” Linda says, “she is a lucky and grateful Gator!”

Outstanding Student Leader Award
Why do you think it’s great to be a Florida Gator?I think it is great to be a Florida Gator because this school has provided me with adequate support from wonderful mentors who were administrators, faculty, and older students. The University of Florida gave me hardships as well as challenging situations that I initially did not know how to navigate. However, due to the support and love from my different communities, I was able to grow in these circumstances and now feel more confident in dealing with difficult circumstances outside of the classroom and involvement sphere. I do not think another institution could have prepared me like that.
Which leadership experience at UF did you find to be most meaningful? The most meaningful leadership experience was an unofficial one, without a title, and one that does not go
on my résumé; it was having the opportunity to be an active advocate for mental health awareness and resources, to serve as a mentor and support system for my friends and peers. People are so important, as are meaningful relationships and genuine bonds. This role allowed me to connect with others in a beautiful and intimate way that I could not have imagined. Advocacy has provided me with that opportunity, and I do not take it for granted. It was a privilege to have had that experience.
What are your future plans?I’m taking a gap year before going off to graduate school to pursue a master’s degree in higher education and ideally work with incoming students from marginalized communities to ensure high retention rates. I also plan to work more with mental health advocacy on a national scale, but in the meantime, I also need a job, so if anyone from UF is reading this and has an open position, please hire me. I have a pretty good sense of humor.

Outstanding Two-Year Scholar
Why do you think it’s great to be a Florida Gator? The University of Florida has always held a special place in my heart. My significant other and best friend both graduated from UF, so I have always cheered for the Gators. No matter where I go, if I am wearing a Gator shirt, I will hear “Go Gators!” countless times. When I started looking for a place to finish my degree, I was attracted by UF’s endless list of degree paths as well as the prestige that goes along with having the University of Florida on my CV. Since I was born and raised in The Swamp, it was only natural that I should go to school in The Swamp. As one of the oldest colleges in Florida, ranked no. 9 on the list of top-ten public universities, and also known as “The Ivy League of the South,” it’s easy to see why UF is (by far) the best university in Florida and why it is so great to be a Florida Gator!
Which scholarly activity at UF did you find to be most meaningful? There are two specific activities that I found extremely useful at UF. One was an assignment for Methods and Materials in Health Education with Dr. Kim Holton. This assignment required using a bit of everything I learned so far to design a health campaign from start to finish. I have already begun to use its framework to design a patient education program for my internship. The other was an assignment for Planning & Evaluating Health Promotion Programs with Dr. Joy Rodgers, completing a skills mastery for a draft logic model. Dr. Rodgers was a fantastic instructor who pushed me to do my best possible work. She was tough, but amazing! I always write SMART objectives and frequently use the Health Belief Model in my career as a health educator.
What are your future plans?I am already living my future. I have a wonderful career where I am lucky enough to be able to work toward educating patients, staff, and other health care providers in our community. I will continue to do this to contribute to the improvement of patient-health outcomes.
Fariz AlkassisCollege of Liberal Arts and SciencesMAJOR: BiologyMINOR: Religion
Outstanding Two-Year Scholar
Why do you think it’s great to be a Florida Gator?Being a Florida Gator is more than attending the University of Florida. It is the most important opportunity to grow, learn and engage with all the diversity and the resources offered. Being a Florida Gator is reflected through the perseverance and hard work of students on the nights before exams, through the spirit of home games on Saturdays, through the freedom of Turlington, through the care of UF Health and Shands hospital, through the joy of midtown on Friday nights, and through the curiosity of UF labs and research teams. All of these make a Florida Gator, and all of these made me proud to be a Florida Gator.
Which scholarly activity at UF did you find to be most meaningful?Beyond the education I received through attending classes and lectures, participating in research with Dr. Doré in the Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease was an opportunity to get hands-on experience on what I learned in my classes. Through this research, I was introduced to the different techniques used in labs and increased my critical thinking skills, which are necessary to reach innovative results.
What are your future plans?I am applying to medical schools to matriculate in 2019. During my gap year, I will be working with Dr. Hideko Kasahara in her lab that focuses on different cardiovascular conditions. Also, I will continue volunteering at Shands Hospital at UF and with Caritas Syria so I can give back to both communities that made me who I am today.

Commencement Speakers
Ian M. GreenStudent Address
W. Gregory SawyerFaculty Address
Ian is a second-generation Gator from Atlanta, Ga., and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in international business. Prior to being elected UF's student body president, Ian served as the senate president and worked to expand student services during his tenure as the budget and appropriations chair. Being a proud Out-of-Stater Gator, Ian has strived to promote an inclusive campus environment for every Gator. Outside of Student Government, Ian has been an active member of Florida Blue Key, the Black Student Union, the Florida Cicerones, and is a brother of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.
Greg Sawyer is a professor, engineer, scientist, cancer researcher and cancer survivor who has turned his attention from exploring outer space to exploring new frontiers in the battle against cancer.
A professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Florida, Greg
was a member of the original Mars Rover design team at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He helped design equipment for the Mars Pathfinder’s Sojourner Rover that surveyed the Martian landscape, and decades later he designed and built the first moving mechanical experiments that operated while exposed to the harsh low-Earth orbit environment aboard the International Space Station.
In 1998, while a PhD student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Greg unveiled a molecular dynamics simulation at the prestigious TED conference in Monterey, Calif. The program — written with college roommate Torkel Svanes — was designed to run on
desktop computers rather than supercomputers and helped researchers quickly test hypotheses and interact with atoms in motion.
Twenty years later, Greg’s approach to cancer research follows the same mold, with a focus on allowing scientists to visualize and interact with cancer. Using bio-printing techniques and other approaches pioneered at UF’s Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, his team builds tumors from patients’ cancer cells. This gives researchers the opportunity to test therapies and study their biology in 3D, real time in the laboratory.
After his own diagnosis with stage-IV cancer, Greg converted his laboratory in surface engineering into a center for cancer and tumor engineering. He has taught thousands of students and mentored dozens of PhD students — many of whom, like Greg, now work at the interfaces between engineering, science and biomedicine. He is a member of the National Academy of Inventors and a UF Distinguished Teaching Scholar who holds dozens of patents and has authored more than 200 scientific publications.
Greg and his wife, Carol, have two sons, William, 17, and Charles, 13.

Chain of offiCe
This custom-made ornament is worn with the president’s regalia, symbolizing the
authority and responsibilities of the office. The chain is engraved with the names
and service years of the university presidents. The medallion’s centerpiece is a
1.3-carat diamond.
aCademiC maCe
Dating back to the Middle Ages, the mace symbolizes
strength and authority. The UF ceremonial mace was created for the university’s
sesquicentennial celebration in 2003. The 70-inch staff features an alligator sitting atop a
globe. The four pillars supporting the globe represent the four original colleges: Agriculture,
Engineering, Law, and Liberal Arts. The staff is carved from cherry wood. The university’s
chief marshal, who leads all academic processions, carries the mace.

Caps and Gowns, An Explanation
The academic regalia worn by graduating students and faculty at today’s commencement ceremonies evolved from a style of dress worn by members of guilds and religious orders in medieval times. The academic gown is worn by individuals who have earned a degree in higher education. In addition, hoods are worn by graduate degree candidates, but not by undergraduate degree candidates.
At the University of Florida, the lining of the hood has a blue chevron on an orange background to represent the university colors. University faculty members who hold degrees from another college or university wear the colors of their alma mater.
The velvet edging on the academic hood is the color that represents the particular degree held by the wearer. Agricultural and Life Sciences and Forest Resources and Conservation share maize edging; Design, Construction and Planning and Building Construction are blue violet; Audiology degrees have colonial blue edging; Business Administration and Accounting are drab; Dentistry is lilac; Education is light blue; Engineering degrees are represented by orange edging; Fine Arts degrees have brown edging; Health and Human Performance is sage green; Journalism and Communications is garnet; Law is purple; Liberal Arts is white and Liberal Sciences is gold yellow; Medicine is green; Music is pink; Natural Resources and Environment is antique gold; Nursing is apricot; Doctor of Pharmacy is olive; Philosophy is royal blue; Public Health degrees have salmon pink edging; Rehabilitation Counseling degrees have Nile green edging; and Veterinary Medicine is gray.
Distinctions among sleeves indicate the type of degree held by the wearer. A long, pointed sleeve indicates a bachelor’s degree, while a long, closed sleeve with a slit near the upper part of the arm designates a master’s degree. A round, open sleeve identifies a doctoral degree.
The doctoral regalia also has velvet running on the rest of the gown, including cross bars on the sleeve. Colored tassels on the degree candidates’ caps indicate a candidate’s school or college.
Alma Mater
Florida, our Alma MaterThy glorious name we praiseAll thy loyal sons and daughtersA joyous song shall raise.Where palm and pine are blowing, Where southern seas are flowing, Shine forth thy noble Gothic walls,Thy lovely vine-clad halls.Neath the Orange and Blue victoriousOur love shall never fail. There’s no other name so glorious–All hail, Florida, Hail!
