COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION OF GROUPERS IN FLOATING CAGESPROJECT PROPOSAL
Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture, Cairoand
The World Fish Center, Abbassa
This project is the outcome of a group efforts to whom
credit and technical responsibility goes. This project is based on an assignment which was
given to course participants and supervised by Dr.
Abdel Rahman El Gamal as a part of “Fish Development
Training course”. This annual course is organized
by the Egyptian International Centre for
Agriculture - Egypt (EICA). The names of the team
members who developed this project as well as their countries are shown in the

Funding Agency : The Egyptian International Center for Agriculture (EICA) and WORLD FISH CENTER -EGYPT
Project Location : Panarukan Bay, East Java, Indonesia
Total Project Cost : US$ 64,856.00.00
Type of Funding : Revolving
RATIONALEGrouper (Epinephelus spp.)Locally known as: kerapu (inIndonesia),lapu-lapu (in Philippines)Family: Serranidae.Carnivorous fish. Feeding on fish,crustaceans, and squids
Geographical distribution: Indo-West Pacific, East Africa, Red Seato the Philippines, Southern Japanand Hawaii.
Habitat: coastal waters: area, rockyshore and coral reefs
One of the most expensive fishspecies Its export price isexpected to increase in the nearfuture
Demand: International market is fast growing particularly in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore..
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Location : Panarakun Bay, East Java, Indonesia
Period: Two years and six modules of floating cages. Each module is targeted to complete three (3) production cycles within the given time frame
Target Production: One module produce 648 kilograms ofgrouper at the end of one cycle (six months).
Project Objectives:
1. To grow grouper (Epinephelus spp.) in floating cages;
2. To utilize available marine resources;
3. To optimize protein production from marine waters;
4. To provide fisherfolk with alternative sources of income;
5. To gain profit
PROJECT ACTIVITIES:Site
The site identified for the establishment of this project is verysuitable for the cage culture, specifically grouper culture.

Cage:
Six (6) unit floating net cage composedof four (4) compartments each.Each compartment will have a dimensionof 2m x 2m x 3m.
Cage Frame
Made of bamboo poles, tied together using nylon ropes.
Floaters
Use of plastic drums (200 Liters), tied tothe cage frame using 12mm PE ropes.
Cage Netting
Made of “PE” net (2-5 cm meshsize; knotted). Each compartment will have two (2) sets of nets (double layer to avoid loss of stock due to tearing and other mechanical damages).
Anchors/ Mooring Device
Anchors/mooring devices to be used made of concrete blocks. 16 concrete blocks (0.5 to 1 ton each) will be used to hold 6 modules.
Shelter
Use of sawed-off bamboos, 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm in length tied in triangular bundles, suspendedin strategic areas inside the cage.
Sinkers
Each compartment have a sinker made of small concrete blocks suspended by ropes, placed at the bottom of the four (4) corners of the net.
Shed houseMade of bamboo and plastic drums. Serve as working area and resting
area of workers, and storage area of materials.
The grouper species to be culturedis Epinephelus fuscogutattus .
It will be sourced out to localgovernment and private hatcheriesnear the locality.
Species to be Used and Sources of Fingerlings
Stocking Density
The size of fingerlings to be stocked is 12-15 cm.
Stocking density of 30 pieces will be used (1,440 pieces per compartment per cycle).
Feed Type, Sources and Feeding Rate
Trash fish used as feeds at the rate 5% of thetotal Biomass.
Trash fish procured from local fish landingcenters at a cost of US$ 0.30/ kilo.
Culture Period and Harvestable Size
Culture period of groupers to raise marketable size fish (0.5 kg) extends over a period of six (6)months.
Harvesting will be done in monthly batches from a battery of cages established for the purpose in quadrant method.
Labor and Manpower Requirement
One Technician will be hired to supervise and manage the project
Two laborers will be hired for thisproject to perform the day to dayactivities.
Project Monitoring
A monthly sampling (10% of total stock) and grading will be done.
Cage net materials and floaters will be regularly checked for cleaning from barnacles, algal mats and repairs for minor damages.
