The roads of Carrollton and the surround-ing areas will soon be caught in the grips of win-ter. Due to the inclement weather, we all will see an increase in minor car accidents. When dealing with car accidents, we must talk about whiplash. Whiplash, in many instances, is considered a fake or made up injury. This type of thinking can lead to life long pain and problems.

Major studies have been undertaken to prove or disprove the amount of force needed to cause whiplash injuries. Hirshs Whiplash Syndrome, in Orthopedic Clinics of North America, October 1988 stated, The amount of damage to the auto-mobile may bear little relationship to the forces applied to the cervical spine and to the injury sustained by the cervical spine. This in plan English means the size of the damage to the car, does not always correlate to the size of the injury to the person. In a study released by the Journal of Manipulative Physiologic Therapy, 1988, stated Crash tests indicate a change of vehicle velocity of 2.5 mph may produce occupant symptoms. Ve-hicle damage may not occur until 8.7 mph. Why do such low forces cause such big neck problems?

Government studies have used standard physics to prove or disprove whiplash. The laws of physics do not change depending on the insurance company, doctor or lawyer. When a car is hit, the first thing that happens is called ramping. Ramping happens when the body (torso) moves upward, with the spinal curves straightening. This combination of upward torso movement along with spinal curve loss, cause the spine to compress. This spinal compression alters the biomechanics of the spine and weakens the spinal ligaments. Slack ligaments are not as strong as ligaments under tension. Prior to the head being whipped, the structures that are there to support the neck and head are compromised, therefore leaving the joints of the neck to not move properly. The second phase of whiplash is the S phase. In this phase the car seat is rapidly pushing the torso forward, while the head remains stationary due to inertia. The normal neck curve can be considered a Reverse C. The arch of the normal neck pushes forward to the front of the body. During the accident, the necks soft tissue weakens and allows the neck to take an S shape. In 1955, ground breaking research was undertak-en by the University of California in co-operation with Yale University to uncover rear-end collision engineering and medical phenomena. Here are the most important findings:

1.At 8 mph, the head and neck are exposed to forces 2 12 times those of the vehicle itself.

2.At higher speeds, the head and neck may be exposed to 4-10 times the cars acceleration.

3.This explains why soft tissue injuries can take place at relatively low speeds.

In 1990s Clinical Biomechanics of the Spine, Lippincott , White & Panjabi backed the findings by uncovering that, An 8 mph rear-end collision produced a 2G (force of gravity) acceleration of the vehicle and a 5G acceleration of the head after a lapse of about .25 seconds. The difference between 2G and 5G acceleration is approximately 30 meters per second.

CAR ACCIDENT: WHERE CAN I GET HELP?

If you are involved in a rear-end collision or front-end collision, here are some factors that can increase the severity of the injury:

Being seated in a small vehicleWet or icy road conditionsLoss of consciousness or cognitive deficitsBeing unaware prior to the collisionThe head being turned at the point of

impactThe larger the striking vehicle, the worse for

the injured patientImproper head restraint positionPre-existing degenerative joints in the neckOlder ageMany people go to the emergency room

following a car accident and have x-rays, painkillers and muscle relaxers prescribed. In many instances, the x-rays are negative and the patient thinks they are fine. This is a major mistake, which could last with them for years. A negative x-ray is negative for fractures, dislocations, bone infection and bone disorders. It very rarely takes into account the mul-tiple soft tissue injuries that occur in an accident. However, Myofascial Pain Syndrome or Fibromyal-gia, is a common result of neck injury. It is also the most common source for chronic neck, head and upper back pain following a motor vehicle injury.

To treat injuries from a car accident, we must understand that there is a soft tissue component (nerves, muscles, tendons and ligaments), a bone component (neck facet joints) and a biomechanical component (neck curve misalignment). Each of these components needs to be corrected individu-ally to decrease permanent residuals. Chiropractic adjustments help correct biomechanical faults. While cervical stretching and rehab along with elec-tric muscle stimulation, ultrasound and mechanical traction help correct soft tissue and facet compo-nents. If medication was given to the patient to reduce pain symptoms, it can be taken during the course of care. However, lack of pain symptoms, due to the medication does not help give proper healing of the cervical spine.

tion of pine straw or mulch.
