NEWS NEWS INVESTING IN NANTUCKET—TODAY AND TOMORROW A grant has been awarded to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Neuroblastoma Research Program in honor of Lyla Theoharides. The Duxtucket Paddle Babes Giving Circle, a group of avid platform tennis players from Duxbury and Nantucket, raised the funds for this grant after a successful PaddleTennis weekend in Nantucket this January. The weekend event has taken place for over thirty years and last year, the group decided to establish a Giving Circle to enhance their group activity. The group approached the Community Foundation for Nantucket to create a fund to add a charitable component to their annual competitive weekend. After two meetings of the Duxtucket Paddle Babes Giving Circle, this year the group decided to make a grant. The interests and opinions of the members were considered and discussed, and it was determined that a donation to Dana- Farber Cancer Institute Neuroblastoma Research Program in honor of the niece of a long-time participant was a great way to spend their charitable dollars. » Mentoring Youth Nantucket (MY Nantucket)My Nantucket works with local families to improve,enrich and broaden the lives of island childrenthrough the support, friendship and guidance ofcaring and responsible adult mentors, helping thosechildren become healthy, independent, productiveand responsible adults. This grant will help with theoperations of the organization.

» Montessori Children’s House of NantucketIn collaboration with The Maria Mitchell Association, ascience program for pre-K through 6 year olds willenrich the current existing science program, focusingon the island’s environment and its inhabitants.

» Nantucket AtheneumThe Literacy Volunteers of the Atheneum (LVA) is anadult literacy program whose service outreach targetsthe robust immigrant population on Nantucket. Thisgrant supports the program coordinator.

» Nantucket Boys & Girls ClubThis grant will go toward a computer lab enrichmentproject which will serve between 100–150 members,enabling them to participate in creativity throughtechnology.

» Nantucket Center for Elder AffairsThis grant supports the 7th Annual Elder Expo, theonly community awareness venue dedicated to thesenior population on Nantucket.

» Nantucket Community SailingNantucket Community Sailing will collaborate withNantucket S.T.A.R , the Saltmarsh Center andPASCON to provide free therapeutic sailing andwatersports activities for their clients and caregivers.

» Nantucket Community Music CenterThis grant will pay for travel for off-island teachers tocome teach Nantucket students as well as takingstudents off-island to the Cape Cod Symphony. Twotalented teachers come to Nantucket to teach Suzukiviolin and another to teach piano.

» Nantucket Food PantryThe food pantry provides basic foods to ensure thatindividuals and families in dire financial straits haveenough to eat. In FY13 the Food Pantry served 948individuals, approximately 9% of the island population.

» Nantucket Historical AssociationThis grant helps support the Diversity Festival at theWhaling Museum, a day of free programs and familyactivities for the community, which is offered inmultiple languages that target the Nantucket non-native English speakers.

» Nantucket Rental Assistance ProgramThe Nantucket Rental Assistance Program continuesto address a critical need on the island for year-round,lower income working residents to find and affordstable year round housing. This grant supports itsoperations.

» Nantucket S.T.A.R.Two classes will be offered to students; Sensory ArtClass in collaboration with the Artist Association forthe fourth year and Music Therapy Class incollaboration with NCMC. The program is open tochildren with special needs and will include two 6-week sessions for 8–10 children.

» Nantucket Safe Harbor for AnimalsLucky Whiskers and Wags Program (LWW) covers theabove and beyond medical expenses of previousshelter animals, and pets whose owners self-refer orare referred by local agencies.

» Small Friends on NantucketThis grant will provide operational support for SmallFriends, seeking to enhance the quality of life forfamilies and meeting the needs of working parents byproviding the highest quality early education and carefor the children of Nantucket aged three monthsthrough five years.

» Swim Across AmericaThe Mass General Hospital Islands Oncology Programbrings world class oncology to our hospital andincreases the number of patients receiving cancercare on the island. PASCON’S Cancer Care Programdevelops patient navigator and survivorship services.Swim Across America provides funds to both theseprograms and this grant will go towards underwritingtheir summer event which raised $187,500 last year.

» Theatre Workshop of NantucketThis grant helped produce TWN’s classic holidaystory: A Christmas Carol. TWN ensures that theperforming arts on Nantucket take “center stage” inthe lives of our year round families in an open cost-free forum.

» Walden Chamber PlayersChamber Music ACK will bring classical chambermusic to Nantucket students grades K-12 through in-class activities and collaborative projects andperformances that integrate students andprofessional musicians.
