There’s no mystery about which cause is Doug and Carla

Salmon’s passion. It’s printed on their business cards: “Education: The road to success.”

The Doug & Carla Salmon Foundation, a supporting organization within the Community

Foundation, has helped more than 700 students with scholarships and counseling since 1999. Most face economic challenges.

Many are single moms. They get help to go on in school and, for the most part, come away with better paying jobs.

“Just a little bit of support and guidance oftentimes can make the difference,” Doug, a retired doctor, said.

The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region

is celebrating 25 years of helping people give to charitable organizations in ways that are smarter, easier and forever.

Our tagline “Helping Donors Share” has described our mission for 25 years. It says even more about the next 25. It speaks to our role in working with people to pursue their charitable passion – whatever it is. Your passion becomes our passion.

In an early video that our founders called “The Enduring Gift,” Paul Groth, our first executive director,

promises: “There’s no way that you can make your gift work harder and do more than by giving it to the Community Foundation.”

We stand by that promise. In the years since

our founding in1986, individuals, families, businesses and organizations have established more than 1,100 charitable funds. Their generosity has enabled us to award more than $150 million in grants to support the work of charitable organizations locally and beyond.

Working together with donors and nonprofits, we can help those in need and maitain the quality of

life we all enjoy.We will be here for

another 25 years, and another and many more, caring for charitable legacies.

Getting Startedestablishing a charitable fund within the Community Foundation is easy.

1. Contact us.(see below)

2. Make an initial contribution of

at least $1,000 for a future fund or $10,000 for an endowment that can award grants ($15,000 for a scholarship fund).

3. Determine your charitable purpose,

give the fund a name and sign a two-page fund agreement.

We award grants from charitable funds that donors establish to give back today and for generations to come. Some want their gifts to address the region’s needs as they change through time. Grants from these unrestricted funds are awarded to nonprofits serving Outagamie, Waupaca, Calumet, Shawano and northern Winnebago counties.

Most donors know the causes they want to support and establish funds that allow them to recommend grants.

A growing number want to be partners in giving with us. For them, our staff will arrange site visits, identify grant opportunities matching their charitable interests or offer other guidance.

Seventh-grade band members at Appleton’s Wilson Middle School are grateful for new instruments that were purchased with a $2,500 grant from the Les and Dar Stumpf Family Fund. The fund’s Keeping the arts in education grant program awarded $21,000 in 2010 to Appleton and Kaukauna schools for art, music and language arts programs suffering from budget cuts. The 2011 grant program added Neenah public and private schools.

Through the generosity of our donors who have created charitable funds within the Community Foundation, we have been able to award more than $150 million in grants during our 25-year history.

The greatest share of that total are grants recommended by the individuals, families, groups or businesses who established the funds.

Grants awarded through competitive grant programs offer a means for charitable organizations to request money for programs, projects, planning or improvements.

We recommend that applicants for these competitive grants:

1. Attend workshops we hold periodically and list on our online calendar.

2. Review the Grants/Nonprofits section of our website.

3. Submit a grant application, after first reading the grant guidelines.

The Fox Valley Technical College Foundation received a Basic Needs Giving Partnership grant of $282,169 over three years for a collaboration involving FVTC and FISC, a financial counseling agency within Goodwill Industries for North Central Wisconsin. The partners developed a Financial Wellness

Center on the college campus to provide financial education and resources to help 1,000 displaced workers become self-sufficient.

2011 Fox Cities liFe Study

The Leading Indicators for Excellence (LIFE) Study offers a clear understanding of the overall quality of life in the Fox Cities by taking an in-depth look at 10 key indicators.

This year, LIFE Studies also were conducted separately in Brown County and Southern Winnebago County, and a report compiled to include data from the entire region.

The Fox Cities LIFE Study is sponsored by the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, United Way Fox Cities, Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Fox Cities Economic Development Partnership.

it all started with one man giving back

Twenty-five years ago, the Community Foundation for the

Fox Valley Region was created by a single act of generosity.

Walter L. Rugland’s gift in 1986 of a $5,000 community leadership prize he had received started it all.

Rugland was the first in a long line of difference makers who have worked through the Community Foundation. He believed that Fox Valley-area residents want a way to give back to their community for the long-term. The answer was a community Foundation.

Walter remained an active supporter of the Foundation

until his death in 1991. Through the Walter and Nora Rugland Fund, he and

his wife continue to support the operations of the Foundation even today.

Doug & Myrt ogilvie established a number of

charitable funds to support what is now the History

Museum at the Castle.

it’s never too early to plan

Shannon and Jean Kenevan seem too young to show up on

a list of people who have arranged for charitable gifts after their deaths.

That misconception, they say, is exactly why they have become members of the Himebaugh Legacy Circle.

“It is never too early to start thinking about the impact your life can make, and what good things you can do now that will live on after you pass,” said Shannon, who is program team leader of the Harmony Cafés in Appleton and Green Bay, a program of Goodwill Industries of North Central Wisconsin.

The Himebaugh Legacy Circle is open to people who have arranged a planned gift to the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region.

It is named for Donald and Violet Himebaugh, a retired accountant and retired Spanish teached from Appleton who left a $16 million unrestricted gift to the Community

Foundation when both died in 2004.

The Kenevans have considerably lesser means. Still, they prepared a will that directs that a gift be made to a permanent endowment fund they

will establish in the family’s name within the Community Foundation to support four charitable organizations they believe in.

Jean said making their gift known as members of the

Legacy Circle is intended to encourage others like them – young and with moderate income – to think about doing the same.

“I would guess that most people think that having a legacy gift through the Community Foundation is something for only the wealthy folks in our community,” she said.

“It is important for people of all means to realize that there are ways that one can make a big difference with even a little money, especially if you start planning while you are young.”
