On Rosh Hashanah, Jews worldwide flock to theirsynagogues and beseech the Almighty to grantthem, their families, and all of Israel a peaceful,

happy and prosperous year. According to Jewish tradition, onRosh Hashanah every creation passes before the SupernalJudge. He determines who will live and who will not, whowill be prosperous and healthy and who will not. Everythingwhich will occur in the coming year is decided on RoshHashanah.

Why is everything determined on an annual basis? Can’t aneternal and infinite G‑d plan a little further in advance?Would it not be more time and energy efficient to judgeperhaps a hundred or a thousand years at once?

Rosh Hashanah commemorates the sixth day of Creation, the day when G‑d formed Adam and Eve and breathed intotheir nostrils the breath of life. An understanding of thedynamic of creation will explain the significance of RoshHashanah.

Certain things are taken for granted. For example, when weturn on a sink faucet, we expect and assume that water willemerge from the tap. Or, a child in most households whoopens the refrigerator expects to find food on its shelves. Intruth, however, neither the water nor the food appear on theirown. There is a well-staffed company which maintains thewater pipes and pumps necessary to draw water from thereservoir into the residential home, and parents investincredible energy to stock the refrigerator.

The same is true with creation. It seems that the worldstands on its own. We assume that that which existed amoment ago will continue existing a moment later. But, infact, the Creator is perpetually maintaining the cosmos. Inthe absence of the steady flow of divine energy, all wouldcease to exist, much as the water in the tap would stopflowing if the water company went under.

And every once in a while, or once a year to be moreprecise, G‑d loses interest in His creation pastime. We were

s”xccreated because G‑d desired to be abeneficent king, and consequently we,His subjects, came into being: crea-tures upon whom G‑d could heap Hisotherwise unused infinite capacity forkindness. But at the onset of everyyear’s Rosh Hashanah, G‑d loses in-terest, as it were, in His finite andflawed subjects. He withdraws, becomes introverted, and we need toprovide Him with an incentive tocontinue creating for one more year.

This isn’t because He has a short at-tention span and habitually losesinterest in projects before they reachcompletion. Rather, this phenomenonis part and parcel of the master plan.

When G‑d originally created thisworld, there was nothing whichelicited that grand gesture. There wasno one around yet to elicit anything; itwas an act of pure kindness. Butultimately, “pure kindness” isn’t sokind after all. It leaves its beneficiaryfeeling unworthy of undeservedbeneficence. That’s why G‑d createda world wherein everything, even ourexistence itself, is rightfully earned. Ifthe world will remain in existence foranother year, it will be because westimulated G‑d’s desire to continue oncourse.

Thus, on Rosh Hashanah, the an-niversary of our creation, it is up to usto ensure that everything continues.

We go to the synagogue andproclaim, “Reign over the entire worldin Your glory.” We “remind” G‑d ofHis love for His chosen people, reaccept Him as our absolute King, and express our innermost desire toserve Him for yet another year. We“remind” Him of the enthusiasm Heoriginally had when creating the worldalmost 6,000 years ago.

And when words fail us, due theirinherent inability to communicate thedeepest heartfelt feelings, we take ashofar, a medium whose simpleweeping notes convey the wordlesscry and request which emanates fromthe core of our souls—“Father, King,we need You and love You, and weknow that the feelings are mutual!”

This Rosh Hashanah, as wecongregate in the synagogues, let usbear in mind that what hangs in thebalance in the coming year is morethan our personal welfare. All ofcreation is counting on us. Let uswholeheartedly commit ourselves toG‑d, and He will surely reciprocate bycommitting to grant all of us abeautiful and meaningful year.

One year, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov said toRabbi Ze’ev Kitzes, one of his senior disciples:“You will blow the shofar for us this Rosh

Hashanah. I want you to study all the kavanot (Kabbalisticmeditations) that pertain to the shofar, so that you shouldmeditate upon them when you do the blowing.”

Rabbi Ze’ev applied himself to the task withjoy and trepidation: joy over thegreat privilege that hadbeen accorded him, andtrepidation over theimmensity of the re-sponsibility. Hestudied the Kabbal-istic writings thatdiscuss the multi-faceted significanceof the shofar andwhat its sounds achieveon the various levels of real-ity and in the various chambers of thesoul. He also prepared a sheet of paper onwhich he noted the main points of each ka-vanah, so that he could refer to them when heblew the shofar.

Finally, the great moment arrived. It was the morningof Rosh Hashanah, and Rabbi Ze’ev stood on the readingplatform in the center of the Baal Shem Tov’s synagogueamidst the Torah scrolls, surrounded by a sea of tallit-drapedbodies. At his table in the southeast corner of the roomstood his master, the Baal Shem Tov, his face aflame. Anawed silence filled the room in anticipation of the climaxof the day—the piercing blasts and sobs of the shofar.

Rabbi Ze’ev reached into his pocket, and his heart froze:

the paper had disappeared! He distinctly remembered plac-ing it there that morning, but now it was gone. Furiously, hesearched his memory for what he had learned, but his dis-tress over the lost notes seemed to have incapacitated hisbrain: his mind was a total blank. Tears of frustration filledhis eyes. He had disappointed his master, who had entrusted

him with this most sacred task. Now he must blowthe shofar like a simple horn, without any ka-

vanot. With a despairing heart, RabbiZe’ev blew the litany of

sounds required by lawand, avoiding his

master’s eye, re-sumed his place.

At the conclusionof the day’s prayers,

the Baal Shem Tovmade his way to the

corner where RabbiZe’ev sat sobbing under his

tallit. “Gut Yom Tov, Reb Ze’ev!” he called. “That wasa most extraordinary shofar-blowing we heard today!”

“But Rebbe . . . I . . .”

“In the king’s palace,” said the Baal Shem Tov,“there are many gates and doors, leading tomany halls and chambers. The palace-keepershave great rings holding many keys, each of

which opens a different door. But there is one keythat fits all the locks, a master key that opens all the doors.

“The kavanot are keys, each unlocking another door in oursouls, each accessing another chamber in the supernalworlds. But there is one key that unlocks all doors, thatopens up for us the innermost chambers of the divinepalace. That master key is a broken heart.”

Hashem wants us to use honey this time of year. It’s sotasty to eat an apply dipped in honey, but did you know thathoney besides being delicious has many medicinalproperties.

Honey can heal cuts and scrapes even better thanantibiotic creams

If you cut or scrape yourself, reach for honey instead ofyour antibiotic cream and you pay be pleasantly surprised. When applied to a wound, honey slowly releases hydrogenperoxide (H2O2), an antibacterial, antimicrobial, andantiseptic compound produced from an enzyme, disinfect-ing the wound, killing the germs and healing the brokenskin. Scientific evidence has shown that most strains ofharmful bacteria cannot survive in the presence of hydrogenperoxide. Also, honey’s viscosity provides a protectivebarrier and forms a moist environment for the wound. Itcreates a healing layer between wound and dressing with nosticking and no tissue damage, reducing the chance ofscarring as the skin cells grow without forming any scab.Honey supplies nutrients necessary for healthy tissueregeneration and stimulates the growth of new blood cap-illaries. The antibacterial properties also provide a barrier tocross-infection of wounds. Honey’s high sugar content hasan osmosis effect on wounds. It draws lymph out to the cellswhile absorbing moisture and provides an anti-inflammatoryaction which reduces swelling and pain.

Animal studies have demonstrated some profound find-ings with honey. Clinical studies have shown that honey ac-

celerated wound healing. In rabbits with cutaneous wounds, honey was found to decrease edema, decrease inflammation, reduce necrosis, improve epithelialization, and improvewound contraction when the wound tissue was examinedhistologically. In mice, the use of honey also demonstratedaccelerated wound healing on cutaneous wounds at the his-tological level. Clinical observations from human trials re-ported that honey-debrided wounds facilitated formationof granulating tissue, improved epithelialization, and re-duced inflammation. This was consistent with what was re-ported in the animal study data previously discussed;however, clinical observation without the support of histo-logical evidence is limited.

Studies showing honey helps children with night-time coughs

Honey is also suggested for a night-time cough.Giving yourself or child honey a few times throughout theday and especially before bed can help sooth a night-timecough. (Honey should never been administered to a childunder one year of age). A tasty idea is to heat up organichoney on the stove add some elderberry syrup mix well, chilland store in the refrigerator.

Studies have shown that honey is a potent treatment fornighttime cough. In one study of 130 children aged 2-17with runny nose and cough were randomized to receivenightly doses of buckwheat honey, artificial honey-flavoredcough medicine (dextromethorphan), or no treatment. Ona parent-rated symptom scale, honey was found to be themost helpful in reducing nighttime cough and improvingsleep in children with upper respiratory infections. Anotherrandomized study of 139 children aged 2-5 years old withupper respiratory infection were divided into 4 treatmentgroups: honey, dextromethorphan, diphenhydramine (eg,Benadryl), or no treatment. Standard care, such as aceta-minophen and nose drops, was also given to all children asneeded. While improvement was seen in all of the groups, children receiving honey had the fewest episodes of night-time cough and slept better compared to children in theother groups.

Honey used for acne

For centuries, people have been using honey mask for acneand for curing other marks, scars, spots etc. The honeymasks are very popular and very effective. It can be madewith different combinations of herbs and other substances.Below is a special Rosh Hashana facial mask

Ingredients: One medium sized apple (preferably organicapple), four to five tablespoons of honey (preferably organichoney) and lukewarm water (to wash face).

To preparation: Scoop out the seeds of the apple and runthe rest in a mixer to make a fine pulp. Now add three to

four (depends on the size of the apple and how many persons itwill serve. The quantity of honey should be sufficient to mix wellwith the pulp) tablespoons of honey into it. Mix well into a uni-form paste. Your apple honey mask for acne is ready to apply.

How to use: Apply a layer of this apple honey mask on yourwhole face. Wait for ten to fifteen minutes and let the mask dryup a bit. When done, wash the mask off with lukewarm water. That’s it. You are done!

Insight: The apple honey mask works best when fresh and isvery easy to prepare, make it just before you apply.

Facts: The grains of apple work as a sort of gentle scrub forcleaning your face, but it’s the glycolic acid in the apple that fa-cilitates exfoliation. Together they clean up the skin pores. Also, since honey in it is a natural antioxidant and has anti-microbialproperties. This eliminates the microbial infections that causeacne.

Patch test before applying to you entire face: Test if you are al-lergic to any of the ingredients in the mask by applying it on asmall patch in your wrist and wait for a few hours. If rashes ap-pear or you show other symptoms of allergy, do not use thismask on your face.

Honey and acid reflux

Many people are finding relief with reflux with the use ofhoney. Honey is very thick and has a tendency to coat the stom-ach and digestive system. Not only will it quell acid flare-ups it

can also help with digestive disorders as well. Honey seems tohelp food to break down and coats the small and large intestine, which means that digested food moves through quicker and eas-ier.

Manuka honey in particular, has shown to help with acid reflux. The antimicrobial action of honey is finally being proven in clin-ical studies and manuka honey seems to be one of the stars. What is so unique about manuka honey for alleviating acid re-flux? It is interesting to learn, that manuka honey is collectedby bees which exclusively feed on the manuka flowers, and itcontains a higher percentage of methylglyoxal (MGO) than otherhoney types. The methylglyoxal along with other componentsare responsible for imparting the antibacterial property to it. Inaddition to the strong antibacterial action, manuka honey acts asan anti-inflammatory and healing agent. If you suffer with acidreflux it is worth giving manuka honey a try.

This Yom Tov enjoy your honey and indulge in its wonderfultaste, and may Hashem bless you and allow you to reap benefitsfrom honeys powerful medicinal qualities.

Who are we, you ask?

Why, you ask?

Help paying their rent...

Help feeding their families...

Help during an emergency...

Busy distributing food...

Busy distributing toys and jewelry...

Busy distributing presentable furniture or a reliable used car...

How do we do it, you ask?

It’s not enough until the tuition is paid...

It’s not enough until the washing ma-chine is repaired...

It’s not enough until the little girl go-ing for cancer treatment has a sheitel she feels good in...

What can you do? We’re glad you asked.

You can tell your friends and neigh-bors about us, so they too can help...

You can donate used furniture, gently worn clothing and toys...

You can rummage through your home for unused shampoo, cleaning supplies and canned food..

You can give of your time to help us pick up and distribute...

You can open your checkbook or take out your credit card and send us a tax deductible contribution.

In the merit of your generosity, we wish you and your family a Happy & Healthy New YearShana Tova!

Can one plan to be blessed? Obviously, we believethat when we live life as G-d intended us to, we willfind or lives blessed in many ways. Even if we do

not always see the results tangibly or immediately, we certainlyare aware of many blessings that come with the territory ofleading a G-dly life. But there is a verse in our Parshah, whichpromises us blessings we never even dreamed of.

If you will listen to the voice of G-d... and observe thecommandments... All these blessings will come upon you andovertake you... (Deuteronomy 28:2)

What does it mean that blessings will overtake you? RabbiOvadia Sforno, one of the classic Biblical commentators, suggests that it means you will be blessed even when youmade no effort to seek those blessings. It will come out ofthe blue, an unexpected windfall.

The story is told of the saintly Rabbi Levi Yitzchak ofBerditchev that he once saw a young man running down thestreet. The Chassidic master stopped him and asked, "Whereare you running?" The fellow answered, "To make a living, rabbi." To which the Berditchever responded, "So how doyou know that your living lies in that direction and you'rerunning after it? Perhaps your livelihood is to be found in theopposite direction, and you're running away from it?"

Do we ever know for sure? How often do the best laid plansof mice and men come to naught? Haven't we all had theexperience of trying our hardest to do a deal, and yet with allthe planning and strategizing nothing whatsoever

materialized? And on the other hand, there may have beentimes when we put no work into it at all and suddenly fromnowhere we landed the deal of the year? The truth is we don'tknow where the blessing of our livelihood lies.

And so it is with spiritual blessings. There are times whenwe make the effort and remain uninspired and there are timeswhen we become inspired effortlessly. According to the BaalShem Tov, our unconscious soul may hear something on ahigher plane and it filters down to our conscious soul and weare touched, moved or inspired.

We live in an era of much confusion. Many are lost, floundering about in spiritual wildernesses. But many arefinding themselves too. There have been many who didn'tnecessarily go looking for G-d but G-d found them. "Howdid you get inspired?" "To tell you the truth, I'm not reallysure. I was minding my own business and I bumped into thisRabbi." Or, "I was sitting next to this fellow on the plane..."Or, "I was just a tourist at the Western Wall but somethingmoved me." Everybody has a story. In some stories we wentlooking for G-d, in others He came looking for us.

So if you feel the spirit overtaking you, don't speed up. Slowdown. Let it catch up with you. May the blessings of G-dovertake you and transform your life

It’s a typical weekday morning and JonahLight Jonah Light, a local corporate and eventphotographer has just finished daveningShacharis at Aish Hatorah, in the Pico-Robert-son neighborhood of Los Angeles. Jonah staysbehind for a couple minutes to schmooze withsome of his friends and invite them to theJBNLA breakfast next door - a monthly busi-ness networking event that hap-pens twice a month. Hementions something to the fea-tured speaker of the month,Saul Blinkoff about his upcom-ing lecture to the members ofJBNLA, and then heads nextdoor to Morry's Fireplace tojoin the rest of the JBNLA at-tendees.

This is what a typical JBNLAmorning looks like for mem-bers of the organization. A lotof the members of JBNLAknew each other before joiningthe organization. It’s these close relationshipsthat have helped JBNLA continue to growsince its inception.

The history of JBNLA dates back 4 yearsago, to the creation of the Frum Business Net-work (FBN), by Jonah Light, in Los AngelesCA. Jonah was previously involved with anumber of different networking groupsaround the city before realizing the need for anew networking organization. “I was surprisedto see that there weren't any Jewish networking

groups in my area that offered its guestskosher food or proper structure, so I decidedto create my own” says Jonah Light.

“While my initial intention was to better con-nect the observant population, business-wise,the reality was that about 50% of the peoplethat were coming were not observant Jews,

nor did they have any desire to be”.

“At that time a friend of mine David Littauerput me back in touch with an old friend ofmine, Josh Dill, of Passaic, NJ, who hadstarted a similar group called the Jewish Busi-ness Network (JBN), which had a great web-site and had already hosted close to 20meetings for its East Coast members. I de-cided that taking Josh’s concept and using it tocreate a better organization, was the next stepfor our budding organization”.

That’s how JBNLA got its name and to thisday, JBNLA connects its members with theEast Coast JBN, in an effort to build the or-ganization and create new and exciting oppor-tunities to its members throughout thecountry.

The goal of JBNLA is to create a betterphysical & virtual space for effectivecross-pollination of Jews & Jewish-runbusinesses throughout Los Angelesand, ultimately, across the nation.JBNLA hosts a breakfast networkingevent every 3rd Wednesday of themonth at Morry's Fireplace (Just Westof the intersection of Pico and Do-heny) from 8-9:30 a.m. and also hostsan event every 2nd Monday night ofthe month from 8-10 p.m. There is alsoan exclusive monthly gathering for Jew-ish attorneys, and a quarterly meetingheld in Valley Village for the Valleyconstituents .

The cost for non-members to attendindividual events is: $15.00 for presale pur-chases or $20.00 at the door. In addition,JBNLA in conjunction with JBN, offers a pre-mium membership for $120 a year, which en-ables members to attend as many JBNLA andJBN meetings as they wish, nation-wide, forno additional cost.

At each JBNLA meeting, there is a nice se-lection of kosher food and at least 30 minutesof unstructured “schmooze time” prior to ashort “Dvar Torah” on business and Yid-

Ever since we introduced the referral slip system, we have beenable to track who is being matched up and if the referrals are fol-lowed up. We've had a lot of success stories of people making busi-ness connections, increasing their bottom line, and even onemarriage, all thanks to JBNLA.

“With today's challenging and competitive workplace and econ-omy, we need to work together to boost each other's livelihood”Jonah remarks.

In the future, Jonah hopes to see new subgroups or offshoots ofJBNLA spring up independently throughout the West Coast.
