DECA members from across the State of Michigan have dedi-cated themselves to being DECA EPIC. The business acumen and professional skills of our members were clearly displayed at

our record breaking District Conferences. Congratulations to all of the district champi-ons who have qualifi ed to compete at this year’s State Career Development Conference! With many exciting things planned, the State Career Development Conference prom-ises to be one of the most rewarding and entertaining DECA experiences of the year. At the Conference you will have the opportunity to exhibit your skills, to network with members from across the state, and to earn a chance to represent Michigan DECA at the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

With the State Career Development Conference quickly approaching, it is crucial that you maintain the drive that has made you successful in past conferences. Start by tak-ing practice cluster exams to gage your knowledge in marketing, fi nance, management, and hospitality. Next, do practice role plays in front of a parent, friend, or adviser. This preparation will help you speak more fl uently and confi dently in front of a judge dur-ing your actual competition. Ultimately, your hard work in the weeks leading up to the conference will determine how well you perform during your role play or presentation. It may even land you a spot to Nashville, Tennessee.

On Friday evening, Voting Delegates will have the opportunity to elect the 2016-2017 State Executive Council. We encourage everyone to visit the State Offi cer Candidate campaign booths before the Opening Session and pay close attention when candidates give their speeches during the Opening Session. By your vote, eight candidates will be chosen to lead Michigan DECA. Since elected offi cers have an enormous impact on the success of the organization as a whole, we ask every chapter to think about qualities they would like in their next State Offi cers.

Lastly, I encourage you to take use this con-ference to explore possible careers for your future. Various colleges and vendors will have booths at the conference. Visit each one to learn about all of the exciting opportuni-ties available to DECA members.

This year’s State Career Development Con-ference promises to nothing short of EPIC. It will provide you with opportunities to prove your worth among the state’s best and to connect with infl uential business leaders and DECA Members. The stage is set. Only one quest remains: are you ready to show how EPIC you are at Michigan DECA’s grandest stage?

With the digital age continuing to sweep the world off of its feet, the core essentials of young business professionals have also evolved! Thus far, we have discussed the evolution of professionalism, how to

create your own personal brand, and for my last installment, I want to speak to you about the importance of being a strong networker!

Networking has become immensely simplifi ed and in some respects de-valued, especially with the raging storm of social media continuing to de-velop. On mediums like Twitter or Instagram, you may think that a subtle follow request or handing out a nice favorite would get you far enough to be remembered, but you are mistaken. Granted, there are fantastic online networking platforms like LinkedIn, but the true beauty in networking lies within the personal and emotional connection that’s formed between two individuals. An opportunity to connect with another person isn’t some-thing that should be digitalized, but rather revered and practiced in person.

You may be wondering what the importance of networking is. In honest words, your “net worth is equal to your network”. What this means is that the more expansive your network becomes, the more valuable you your-self become! A great example to illustrate this concept is when you’re with your friends and someone asks if anyone wants to do anything the coming Saturday night. At fi rst no ideas are thrown out, but eventually someone brings up the idea of going to a concert or a sports game. Now, tickets can be hard to get, but there’s always that one friend who bursts out saying “I know a guy!” The value, or in broader terms “net-worth” of that one friend rose exponentially because now the fate of everyone’s weekend lies in that person’s hand and whether or not they can deliver. Essentially, as you connect with more people, your outreach will gradually become more encompassing and opportune, and you’ll ultimately become more versatile and rich with your palette of contacts.

When you’re networking, look to form a strong personal connection! Re-member, the person you’re talking to for the briefest of moments could end up being the same person who sets you up with an amazing job interview or business opportunity. Don’t be afraid to say hi, and remember to let your personal brand shine bright and leave a lasting impression.

Use the State Career Development Conference as an opportunity to net-work with over 3,600 future marketing professionals! During Opening Session or your event orientation, step aside from follows and favorites, and go beyond with a hello and how are you?

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepre-neurs for careers in marketing, fi nance, hospital-ity and management in high schools and colleges

around the globe. These are the words we say when asked what DECA is, but it is much more than that. In the past three years that I have been a member in DECA, my life has changed completely. The skills you learn in DECA can’t be taught in a classroom through a lecture. DECA brings you into real life situations and helps you to thrive in them.

Many students worry about their future. Will I go to college? Where will I go to college? How much debt will I be in? Will I have a career that I can support myself with? Going into my senior year, I had these same fears.

Growing up I always wanted to be a Neurologist. I loved learning how the brain works, and the money wasn’t a downside. Then I joined DECA. With the skills I learned in role plays, workshops and networking, I began to thrive in business. Since business is so broad and there are many careers to choose from, I began to research what I thought I would enjoy doing, but I found it diffi cult to fi nd something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. While talking to my dad about the many possibilities, he knew I loved stocks and loved investing. He asked me to come to dinner with our Fi-nancial Advisor and talk to him about his job. At dinner I was completely fascinated with how his career worked and immediately set out on the path to become a Financial Advisor. I changed a few classes to prioritize my schedule on the business path and began to read books on investing. I then found a college that could support my career path, and I haven’t turned back since.

My point is - fi nd something you love and do it. I love managing stocks and watching the market, and I would love to invest the rest of my life in investing. I encourage you to research what you want to pursue for a career and talk to someone in that particular fi eld. As your journey in DECA draws to a close, I plead with you to not let it end. Carry the skills you learn, the passion that drives you, and the friends you meet with you into your future. DECA prepares emerg-ing leaders and entrepreneurs for real life. Take what you have learned in this wonderful organization and implement it in your life. Competition doesn’t end at a conference. Whether you’re preparing for next year’s State Career Development Conference, preparing for college, or pre-paring to go into the workforce, DECA has helped you to be ready for the challenges life will throw at you.

Working as a team in business, or in any situation can sometimes be very diffi cult. While some teams fi nd ways to make ends meet fairly easily, others may not. In DECA, Team Decision Making Events are used to utilize skills that involve teamwork,

leadership and compromise. Working well as a team during the State Ca-reer Development Conference is key to mov-ing on to the next stage, to the International Career Development Conference in Nash-ville, Tennessee. To do so, teams are going to have to step it up, and prepare for the bar to be raised. In order to succeed as a pair, here are some things to remember:

1. Make sure you are both on the same page. Going into a role play requires you to begin working together to come up with solutions to your case study. Make sure that as a team your goals are clear and you both remain focused on reaching that goal while preparing and presenting. Also, make sure that both partners want to succeed just as much as the other. Determination can give your team the drive it takes to make it to the top and up on stage.

2. Be open to all ideas. In order to communicate well and ensure that both minds are being utilized, make sure you are open to all ideas thrown on to the table. Shutting out ideas can cause small disruptions and could waste valuable time needed to prepare for your presentation.

3. Assign roles to team members. Every team needs a member who is more in charge. Leadership is helpful in making sure both members stay on the same page. Having the partner write down the ideas, and keep track of time is also a great way to distribute power and increase the effi -ciency of how quickly you are getting work done. Also establish who will cover what topics during the presentation so everything fl ows smoothly.

4. Know how to compromise. Never go into the prep area with stubborn habits. Be-ing stubborn with your ideas can cause many disputes which ultimately leads to an unorga-nized presentation and could jeopardize your chances of advancing on to the next stage.

5. Complement each other. Before, dur-ing and after a role play you need to be sup-portive to your partner. Mutual respect helps boost confi dence. Positive feedback during preparation time keeps up the confi dence and reduces the chances of stress kicking in and affecting your work. Practice giving

short comments of positive feedback to help you and your partner prepare for any stressful obstacles that could come your way.

Utilizing these key factors of working well as partners will help ensure that you and your partner can work together to reach your goals. Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” Make sure your team is ready to work together in order to make it on stage at the State Career Develop-ment Conference, and maybe even the International Career Development Conference.

Key Aspects of Working Well As a Team Ashley Hardacre,

Vice President of Business Partnerships

State Offi cer CandidatesEach Voting Delegate will vote for up to 8 candidates for State Offi ce at the State Career Development Conference.

Once the offi cers are elected, they will meet in May to select amongst themselves who will serve in each offi ce.

I want to be a Michigan DECA State Offi cer because of the way DECA drew me in and the experiences I’ve gained from joining. I’d very much like to be a leader in DECA and be a part, even more than I am, of such a rewarding and fantastic organization. I know that be-ing a part of the State Council means joining the best of Michigan’s

future business leaders and it’s an opportunity I do not want to pass up. DECA Activities:Competed at the District ConferenceCompeted at the State Conference2015 International CDC CompetitorPresident, East Kentwood DECA

I want to be a Michigan DECA State Offi cer in order to become further involved with the DECA organization. I feel that I can make a change and improve the organization as a whole. Another reason why I am interested in becoming a State Offi cer is that I would like to obtain experience in positions that I would normally not be able

Since I’ve been highly involved with my school chapter of DECA, it has become a very important part of who I am. I enjoy my leader-ship role within the chapter, but it would be very unlike me to not strive for something greater. In this case, “something greater” is a Michigan DECA State Offi cer Position. I’m a natural leader, so the

State Offi cer position is well suited to me. I enjoy challenging myself and going the extra mile, and if I can do this while making Michigan DECA a better experience for current and future members, then I will do everything possible to obtain this position, bettering myself in the process.DECA Activities:Competed at the 2014 District ConferenceCompeted at the 2015 State ConferenceCompeted at the 2015 District ConferenceCompeting at the 2016 State ConferenceChapter President, Midland DECAChapter fund raisers

I have wanted to be a State Offi cer since freshman year when I at-tended the State Conference and saw them on stage. I was so ner-vous that weekend and I was helped numerous times by the State Offi cers. In my sophomore year, I confi rmed my ambition to run for the State Offi ce and began my research. I went to all of the cam-

paign booths and asked the State Offi cers and State Offi cer Candidates for advice on running. I want to be an Offi cer because I want to help others develop their passion for business in the same way that previous Offi cers have helped me.DECA Activities:Competed at the State Conference

DECA has allowed me to grow personally and I feel more prepared to pursue a business career. Thus, I want to

give back by becoming a Michigan DECA State Offi cer. I entered high school shy and easily susceptible to peer pressure. It was through DECA that I learned to believe in myself and commu-nicate more effectively. The primary reason that I would like to be a Michigan DECA State Offi cer is because I believe that this great organization can transform students’ lives, like it did to mine. I will

be exuberant if during my term I am able to inspire at least one person to go out of their comfort zone and improve themselves. I want to be a Michigan DECA State Offi cer because I want to ex-pand my role in Michigan DECA. I am ready to take on more re-sponsibility and put my knowledge to the test. I also want to contin-ue the video work I started at the beginning of this year. I know that with our monthly vlogs we can grow a greater sense of community

within our state organization and even with other states. These videos communicate success, power, and leadership and that is one thing I love being a part of. I want to be a Michigan DECA State Offi cer because of my passion and dedication for Michigan DECA. I want to take my passion for Michigan DECA and translate it to all of Michigan by helping lead and execute conferences and other events. The opportunity to be a Michigan DECA State Offi cer will help me develop life-long leader-

ship skills, and the skills I develop will help me to accomplish my future career goals. All in all, Michigan DECA has been a part of my life for three years now and I would like to end my fourth year in memorable and new experiences. I want to be a State Offi cer because DECA has been such a mean-ingful part of my personal development and high school experience, and I would love to share that message with other students across the state. Although I learn a lot in class, I believe that DECA teaches me more tangible and critical skills than school ever has or likely

will. In middle school, when I would think of entering high school, I would think of how close I was to participating in DECA like my older siblings. The experience lived up to my expectations, and after I came home from the State Leadership Conference freshman year, I told everyone I knew about how great DECA is and how everyone should be required to join. As a DECA State Offi cer, I want DECA to be a family. I also want to get more people involved in DECA, both in new and existing schools.DECA Activities:Attended the State Leadership

Michigan DECA opened my eyes to a whole new world of oppor-tunities my freshman year of high school. As someone who has a genuine interest in the fi elds of entrepreneurship, marketing, lead-ership, and management, I am able to strongly connect with both the students in DECA and DECA’s programs. I want to become a

Michigan DECA State Offi cer so that I can further enhance my leadership and public speaking skills, work on a team with like-minded students, and show others the truly amazing things DECA has to offer.DECA Activities:State Conference CompetitorAttended the International ConferencePresident, Petoskey DECAAttended the State Leadership

8 Spring 2016

Just because the 2015 – 2016 DECA year has al-most come to a close, there is still an opportunity to contribute. Whether this year has been your fi rst experience with DECA or it’s your last, pay it for-ward.

The summer is a great opportunity to plan ahead for next year. Community service projects take time and planning. Beginning to brainstorm and im-plement the fi rst steps of the project now, gives you time to focus without the stress and commitment of the school year. Your chapter members are likely less busy in the summer, and you can really maximize the amount of participation in your project. If the thought of beginning a project is already overwhelming, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer as a chapter at various summer charitable events. Whether it’s through making donations, networking or volunteering, paying it forward as a chapter can truly be rewarding.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) is an organization that DECA has supported for many years. MDA summer camp is a fantastic opportunity for you to pay it forward. Imagine what a difference you would make to the children that are impacted by this disease? Volunteer-ing at the week-long camp is an opportunity of a lifetime; it gives perspec-tive and so much meaning to the fundraising you and your chapter have done. DECA members who have attended camp in previous years call it nothing short of life changing. Volunteers are always needed so if you’re interested in paying it forward, visit www.mda.org for more information about MDA summer camp.

After your time in DECA, you may move on to other things in your life, but always remember that there are opportunities to give back. Like MDA,

there are many organizations that support DECA and need volunteers. Maybe you realize that you miss your old chapter and a great way to stay connected is to dedicate time to assisting them when needed. During com-petition season what better way to give back than to be a judge for a prac-tice role-play night? Supporting the chapter that helped get you where you are today is a win-win scenario. No matter what you do this summer or after you graduate, remember that you can make your time EPIC by pay-ing it forward.

When it comes to your future, we’re listening.

Numbers don’t lie, and facts are facts. The Ambas-sador Program, geared toward growing member-ship, is an effective program that is backed by facts and is very effective in growing a chapter’s mem-bership. Not only does the program help recruit

members, but it informs the community of DECA, and can be used for fundraising purposes as well. The program is valuable when used at Parent Teacher Conferences. Here are the steps to having an effective program:

1. Select two to four members from your chapter. These members should have good people skills, dressed nicely in business attire, and be knowledgeable about DECA.

2. Have them attend an event, such as parent teacher conferences, and set up a table with awards your chapter has earned and information about DECA. Handouts that are simple to understand can be useful. Make sure you are located at a convenient location for the event.

3. When the attendees arrive, approach them; don’t wait for them to come to you. Talk about DECA, explain to them all of the benefi ts of DECA. Show them that not only is it business but it also is fun. Talk about travelling and all the opportunities it has to offer.

4. You can also use this time for fundraising purposes - sell merchandise from your school store, have a bake sale, or whatever other fundraisers.

5. When the event is over, make sure to put all the stuff is away, and if you did any fundraising make sure the money is counted and safely secured.

The Ambassador Program is one that works! I started it at Kearsley High School. The members who participated had fun, plus the parents we talked to enjoyed hearing about DECA. Our membership also increased dramati-cally; we increased by over 60% in our chapter, which made it more fun when we traveled. Gaining members also increased the number of com-petitors, which increased the amount of winners on stage that represented our school well.

Feel free to use the program with an event that will make it more effective in your chapter. I would suggest doing the Ambassador Program either at the end of the year, or the start of one to have time for members join.

Vice President of Chapter Development

Spring 2016 11

“When your name is called, please take

a big step forward. The overall state champion - receiving a plaque and representing Michigan

DECA at the International Career Development Conference is ___________”.

If you’re like me, your mind has begun to play some form of overly dra-matic theatrical music and without a second thought, you inserted your name in that blank.

Egotistical? “Oh no no, Oh no no, be confi dent” I’m sure Beiber would agree.

From the gestures of your hands, to the strut in your walk, your level of confi dence radiates deeply. Some are born with it, many have to work for it, and still others do not know how to obtain it. Nevertheless, it can always be achieved.

Major Key #1Ever heard the phrase “fake it until you make it”? It’s a tried and true method that has proved its effi ciency to countless DECA competition participants over the course of many years. We all know that one DECA member who we were all shocked and surprised (pleasantly) to see advance in the competition. More than likely, it was due to his/her game face. Only you know the thoughts that play out within your head. What thoughts and feelings you choose to pres-ent is solely up to you. You call the shots on the impressions you make. Regardless of self-induced nerves during competition, or any situation for that matter, place a smile on your face and speak your words like you mean it! Intonation, facial expressions, eye contact, and body movement are four major keys in creating the illusion of confi dence, even when you yourself cannot realize your own depth and abilities.

Major Key #2Increase your competency and focus only on the solutions. Any and all projects and endeavors should begin with the end in mind. Why set out on a journey without any sense of direction? Find your niche, your path, your lane, and decipher where you want that path to lead you. By becoming informed and more competent in a given area of interest or importance, decreases the time in which a solution will be found. Confi dence can only be reached by honing in on your ultimate goal. Educate yourself on what it takes to get there and stay motivated with the end result to soon come. Stay on the path to success.

Major Key #3: Who or what inspires you? Look for someone or something that you ad-mire and discover what makes them lead a life of confi dence. Often, it is our environment that plays the essential role of defi ning our mindset. Involve yourself with individuals who are traveling in the same direction as you are. Place yourself in situations that cater to your self-esteem and confi dence. I challenge you to reach out to that person of inspiration or engage in the activity that captivates and motivates you to be better. Living examples prove to all of us, that our aspirations, in this case confi dence, are defi nitely attainable.

Just as Hip Hop entertainer and social media powerhouse DJ Khaled would say, “You’re smart, you’re loyal, I appreciate you” Major keys to confi dence!

Major Keysto Success
