    24-Fiber System Overview

    24-FIBER TRUNKING SOLUTIONS

Bandwidth and storage demand is expanding at a breathtaking rate. The environment is rapidly evolving. The impact on data center design and management is profound. Networks will migrate from 10 to 40 to 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) speeds dynamically, and data center managers and designers need to be able to manage this migration to maximize efficiency and responsiveness while minimizing cost.

This dynamic migration demands a simple yet robust migration pathway, and successful migration starts with a simple yet robust plan. This guide presents just such a concise and manageable plan to allow migration of infrastructure, whether it be core switching, aggregation, end of row, top of rack or hybrid network architectures.

    INTRODUCTION

This configuration guide has been designed to provide data center managers and designers with a guide to the various 24 fiber MPOptimate channel/link configurations that are available - based upon their current and future transceiver speed/connectivity requirements.

Using the grid below, select your start point transceiver connectivity type and your end point transceiver connectivity type. Then decide whether you need a cross-connect or interconnect solution. The intersection of your choices shows a number which represents the recommended product configuration for your choices.

Details of the recommended configuration are shown on subsequent pages identified by that configuration number.

    24-Fiber 10 Gigabit Ethernet Interconnect

    INTRODUCTION

The 10GbE interconnect solution employs a 24-fiber optical trunk with a single 1x24 fiber MPOptimate connector at each end. This trunk interfaces with the rear of a 24-fiber Universal Connectivity Platform (UCP) cassette that breaks out the trunk fibers into twelve duplex LC connections at the front, supporting 24 fibers per cassette. This cassette mounts into the UCP panel, which provides cable management and protection for both rear MPOs. UCP panels support up to 48 duplex LCs (96 fibers) per rack unit. They can be populated all at once, or added to or upgraded a cassette at a time in the future.

    24-Fiber 10/40 Gigabit Ethernet Interconnect

    INTRODUCTION

UCP 10/40GbE fiber cassettes also utilize 1x24-fiber MPO trunks supporting connections from 40GbE switch ports that have been remotely enabled as four 10GbE independent paths. MPO based QSFP ports at the switch interface with a MPO/MPO cassette at one end of the trunk, and MPO/LC break-out cassette divides these signals into duplex LC pairs at the other end. The 40Gb/s MPO cassettes have one or two 24-fiber MPO connectors at the rear and three or six 8-fiber MPOs at the front. Each cassette supports distribution of three or six 40GbE paths, each containing four duplex 10GbE links. These cassettes are connected via standard 24-fiber MPO trunks to LC duplex cassettes at the other end of the trunk. The MPO/LC cassettes maintain fiber paths and polarity and provide proper fiber mapping from transmit at one end to receive at the other over a total of twelve 10GbE paths.
