We are already in the month of March. It seems as though the holidays were only yesterday. We are all set-tled in for the new year and thus far 2014 is as exciting and full of new prospects as 2013.

In this edition we have exciting competitions as always. See page 5 and Enter to win.

It’s that time of year, again. It is the Easter School break. The holiday magic has begun. The family is gathering at Grandma’s, you are going to the KKNK, or just chilling by the seaside. Now you are trying to figure out how to squeeze Fluffy into a carry-on. You have different options if you cannot take Fluffy with you and need to leave him behind.

You can place your pet in a kennel. Although this option can be expensive, kennels can provide excellent care. Hire a pet sitter. An experienced pet sitter will watch your dog or cat, keep up on training, take your dog for walks and be a friendly, loving face while you are away. Hire a dog walker. A dog walker coming by twice a day to take your dog on walks while your family is away is often the cheapest option. Take special care to secure your home before going on holiday. For all those on the road, travel safely and buckle up. May you feel the hope of new beginnings, love and happiness during this joyful Easter holiday.

God bless

Nicky

Beneficial uses of Epsom Salts

Why it works The magnesium sulfate in Epsom salt penetrates the skin and has an anti-inflammatory effect. The body’s magnesium level increases when soaking with salts, which promotes the body’s production of serotonin; a mood-regulating neuro-transmitter that may increase feelings of relaxation and well-being. Magnesium has also been proven to support heart-beat regularity and the immune system.

When not to use It is best to not use hot bath salt soaks if you have heart prob-lems, varicose veins, and high blood pressure, are diabetic or are pregnant. Please consult your physician prior to soaking in an Epsom salt bath if you have any of these conditions.

The good newsIt is available at your local supermarket at under R15 for 500g

Mother & Child I Special Needs

DyslexiaA dyslexic person, although bright in many areas, struggles long-term with written and sometimes spoken words. A psychologist can identify that your child is dyslexic by a variety of symptoms but if you suspect your child to be dyslexic you can look for the following signs or symptoms:

• Lack of interest in letters and words at a young age.• Inability to identify rhyming words (e.g. hat, pat and fat)

and word patterns (e.g. bill, bear, bun, bed and ball, all beginning with “b”) at an early age.

• Difficulty remembering names of familiar objects, numbers, colours and shapes.

• Inability to remember sequences of numbers or letters.• Extreme difficulty with reading. • Extreme difficulty with spelling.

To help your child master many words, try these strategies:

• Help your child with short-vowel sounds by having him/her draw images into the vowels while saying their short sounds. For example, he can create an apple out of an “a” or draw an egg inside the top part of “e”.

• Help your child read and spell words like late, hole and cute by showing him the Bossy e rule: When e is on the end of a short word, it bosses the earlier vowel into saying its name (but stays silent itself).

• Help your child read and spell long-vowel words like meet, neat, nail and boat by teaching him this rule: “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking (and says its name). “Try to remember that being unsuccessful in school doesn’t automatically mean you’ll be unsuccessful in life. Lots of people who didn’t excel in school still went on to have successful lives.”

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye . . . and YES science now shows that carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart is red and has four chambers. All of the research shows tomatoes are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes resemble the alveoli of the lungs. A diet high in fresh grapes has shown to reduce the risk of lung cancer and emphysema. Grape seeds also contain a chemical called proanthocyanidin, which is thought to reduce the severity of asthma triggered by allergy. One reason that premature babies struggle to survive is that, these alveoli do not begin to form until 23 to 24 week of pregnancy.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds are on the nut just like the neo-cortex. We now know that walnuts help develop over three dozen neuron-

transmitters for brain function by encouraging new messaging links between the brain cells. Walnuts help ward off dementia.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy and Rhubarb look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don’t have enough sodium in your diet the body pulls it from the bones, making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Eggplant, Avocadoes and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today’s research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this . . . It takes exactly nine months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit.

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the motility of male sperm and increase the numbers of sperm cells to overcome male sterility.

There’s no question that maintaining a nutritious diet can help keep your body healthy. Nature gives us a big clue as to what foods help what part of our body!

Below you will find foods that mirror the body parts which they provide nutrients for — Coincidence? Maybe. Although these healthy foods are beneficial to the whole body, it acts as a fun reminder of what to eat to target specific areas. Remember, these are best and more powerful when eaten raw.

They’re Good For You!

Medical I Therapists

Grapefruits, Oranges, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like body cells. Research shows that onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycaemia index of diabetics. The oblong sweet potato bears a strong resemblance to the pancreas, and also promotes healthy function in the organ. Sweet potatoes are high in beta-carotene, which is a potent antioxidant that protects all tissues of the body, including the pancreas, from damage associated with cancer or aging.

Olives assist the health and function of the ovaries. An Italian study found that women whose diets included a lot of olive oil had a 30% lower risk of ovarian cancer. The reasons are unclear, but the healthy fats in the oil may help suppress genes predisposed to causing cancer.

Eating a Banana will cheer you up and put a smile on your face. This popular fruit contains a protein called tryptophan. When digested it gets converted into a neurotransmitter called serotonin, which is a mood regulating chemical in the brain. Banana can be termed as an antidepressant drug, since it adjusts the level of serotonin production in the brain.

Ginger looks like the stomach and it also aids in digestion. Indians and Chinese have been using it for over 5000 years to calm stomach and cure nausea and motion sickness. It also slows down the growth rate of bowel tumours.

Mushrooms when sliced in half resembles the shape of the human ear. Mushrooms improve hearing abilities, since they contain Vitamin D, which is healthy for bones, especially the three tiny bones in the ear that transmit sound to the brain.

The close-up of tiny green tips on a broccoli head looks like 100 cancer cells. A team of researchers at US National Cancer Institute found that a weekly serving of broccoli was enough to reduce the risk of prostate cancer by 45%.

Ginseng root looks like a human body and it is a holistic cure for nearly all ailments.

Red wine, which is rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, including powerful resveratrol, looks like blood. When you drink it, you’re really loading up on the healthy stuff that protects against destructive things in the blood, like LDL cholesterol, which can cause heart disease. There’s also a blood-thinning compound in red wine, helping to reduce blood clots, which are associated with stroke and heart disease.

It is the passionate belief from all of us at Be Sharp Beetles that music should form an essential and integral part of every child’s physical, emotional and intellectual development.

• Music classes enhance a child’s ability to master the

necessary skills needed for reading, which includes

listening skills, anticipation skills, developing memory

and recalling and enhancing concentration.

• “Crossing the midline” is encouraged in movement

activities with music. This is the ability to move one

hand, foot or eye into the space of the other hand,

foot or eye which is an essential skill for left-right

orientation needed for reading and writing.

• The area of the brain responsible for emotion and

memory is stimulated and developed by music.

• Young children are not always in control of all their

movements. Musical movements assist children to

demonstrate self-control as they have to think about

how and when they move their bodies and voices

together with the music.

• Musical movements introduce children to language

and sensory-motor skills.

• Rhythmic abilities and skills are learnt when children

have to keep to the beat of the music. This assists in

problem-solving skills.

• Language is entering the brain through several

different pathways and first- and second language

acquisition is facilitated.

• Researchers have noted that children that have been

exposed to music and movement classes as part of

their education generally understand fractions and

proportional Maths better.

• Children exposed to music and movement classes

have an increased spatial awareness – the ability to

transform objects in space and time.

• Music is associated with fun and good times

and therefore enhances development of social,

language and motor skills in a relaxed and non-

threatening way.

Article courtesy Be Sharp Beetles

Music can be used as a powerful tool when working with a child with Down Syndrome. The main goal is to assist the child in reaching their

greatest potential. The goals often overlap and reinforce skill areas that are being addressed during the child’s other therapies at occupational and physical therapists.

Teacher Finds a New Way

to Fight Bullying

Teaching children is a sacred bond and responsibility. Maths and reading are the least important subjects learned in a classroom. It is important to shape little hearts into becoming contributors to a larger community in support of our mutual dream, that those communities be made up of individuals who are Kind and Brave.

An American maths teacher found the answer. Every Friday afternoon she asks her students to write down the names of four children with whom they’d like to sit the following week. The children know that these requests may or may not be honoured. She also asks the students to nominate one student whom they believe has been an exceptional classroom citizen that week. All ballots are privately submitted to her.

And every single Friday afternoon, after the students go home, she takes out those slips of paper, places them in front of her and studies them. She looks for patterns.

Who is not getting requested by anyone else? Who doesn’t even know who to request?

Who never gets noticed enough to be nominated?Who had a million friends last week and none this week?

You see, this teacher is not looking for a new seating chart or “exceptional citizens.” This teacher is looking for lonely

children, or those struggling to connect with other children. She’s identifying the little ones who are falling through the cracks of the class’s social life. She is discovering whose gifts are going unnoticed by their peers and she’s pinning down who’s being bullied and who is doing the bullying.

As a parent, and lover of all children, I think that this is the most brilliant Love Ninja strategy I have ever encountered. It’s like taking an X-ray of a classroom to see below the surface and into the hearts of students. It is like mining for gold. The gold being those little ones who need help – who needs adults to step in and TEACH them how to make friends, how to ask others to play, how to join a group, or how to share their gifts with others. It serves as a bully deterrent because every teacher knows that bullying usually happens out of their eyesight and that those being bullied are often too intimidated to share. But as she said – the truth comes out on those safe, private, little sheets of paper.

ALL VIOLENCE BEGINS WITH DISCONNECTION. All outward violence begins as inner loneliness. Children who aren’t being noticed will eventually resort to being noticed by any means necessary.

What this mathematician has learned while using this system is something she already knew: that everything, even love, even belonging, has a pattern to it. She found those patterns through those lists – she breaks the codes of disconnection and then she gets lonely kids the help they need. It’s math to her.

All is love- even math. Amazing.

TEACH ON, WARRIORS. You are the first responders, the front line, the disconnection detectives and the best and ONLY hope we’ve got for a better world. What you do in those classrooms when no one is watching - it’s our best hope.

Teachers- you’ve got a million parents behind you whispering: “We don’t care about the damn standardised tests. We only care that you teach our children to be Brave and Kind and we thank you for saving lives.”Love – All of Us

No better friendship is found anywhere,

For they talk and they walk and they run and they play,

And they have their deep secrets for many a day;

And that boy has a comrade who thinks and who feels,

Who walks down the road with a dog at his heels.

No other can lure him away from his side;

He’s proof against riches and station and pride;

Fine dress does not charm him, and flattery’s breath

Is lost on the dog, for he’s faithful to death;

He sees the great soul which the body conceals--

Oh, it’s great to be young with a dog at your heels!

Education is an essential right, which permits each person to receive instruction and to blossom socially. The right to an education is vital for the economic, social and cultural development of all societies.

Education: an important apprenticeship

Education permits one to acquire basic knowledge

Education entails that its subjects acquire a variety of

knowledge. It begins with the acquisition of elementary

knowledge—that is to say, literacy—on the part of the

youngest members of society. At this stage, children learn

to read and write thanks to primary instruction and parental

oversight.

This is an essential stage which will permit the child to

pursue his/her education by integrating secondary and post-

secondary instruction.

Education also consists of a form of learning that is

necessary for the development of one’s personality and

identity, as well as his physical and intellectual capabilities.

Education permits, notably, the transmission of common

principles to new generations, and the conservation and

perpetuation of social values. It also contributes to the

flourishing of individuality through the enhancement of

social and professional integration.

Education has as its ultimate objective the improvement

of a person’s quality of life. It offers to underprivileged

adults and children a chance to escape from poverty. It is

thus an essential tool for the economic, social and cultural

development of all populations around the world.

Top 10 Tips for Good Parenting

Tip #1 – If you love your kids—put yourself first!Children flourish when they are raised in a home with happy, balanced parents.

Tip #2 – If you are married—put your marriage before your kids!

A key to good parenting is to have a happy marriage in which your children can thrive and which they can use as a model for their future relationships.

Tip #3 – Cherish your childrenHug your children at least three times a day. Tell them often how much you love them.

Tip #4 – Teach your kids to fish (rather than fish for them)

One of the best things you can do is to help your kids learn how to do for themselves.

Tip #5 – Focus on what you like (instead of what you don’t like)

If children aren’t being appreciated and aren’t getting attention for what they do well—and when they behave well—you better believe they will learn to get attention for misbehaving.

Tip #6 – Give respect and respect it in returnDon’t do anything to your child that you wouldn’t want your child to do to you.

Tip #7 – A family that plays together stays together! Have fun—play with your kids! Laughing, tickling, and playing together is the foundation of a happy home.

Tip #8 – Pick your fights wisely and fight honourablyKids need to feel in control of certain areas of their life. They also need boundaries. Create family rules but ensure that there is flexibility too.

Tip #9 – Say what you are going to do and stick to it If you consistently repeat yourself and then don’t follow through on what you’ve said, you are teaching your kids to ignore you.

Tip #10 – Find Your G-Spot! When you’re about to go off the deep end, don’t take your kids with you, it is important to find your God-spot. Whatever higher power you believe in, having faith that things will all work out in the end goes a long way to getting you through those “deep end” moments.

Face it. You are going to mess up some days!

There will also be days when you just want to cry.

So hang on to your faith. When the unexpected

happens, it may be all you have to help you make

it through.

It is Green, it is Popular and it is taking sustainable living to another level. Greenpop is a growing non-profit organisation creating awareness through green events, tree planting initiatives, corporate involvement, product development, volunteering and educational projects and social media.

They encourage the community to engage in a movement that supports the belief that greening and sustainable living can be fun, rewarding and accessible to all.

As a company or individual you can get involved by joining their pledge programme and planting trees every month, thus creating your own forest! You may also gift fruit or indigenous trees to the organisation which they will then plant as part of their greening or reforestation initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa. Birthday presents and corporate gifting take on an extra special factor when choosing to buy a Greenpop tree ring made from wire and beads specially crafted by local Sydeny Nyamutaka. Each ring represents an indigenous tree that they will plant in an under-greened community or reforestation project on your behalf.

This year the 2014 Platbos Reforest Fest is not to be missed. It will be held over 9 -11 May and 16 - 18 May. Direct enquiries to [email protected]. The first weekend will be more for families where they can engage in many activities such as poster making and games, a talent show, live music, poetry workshops and informative guided walks in addition to planting trees, whereas the following weekend will be a Friends Fest and more geared to dance and celebratory festivity. During this festival Greenpop aims to plant more than 4 000 trees in one of the oldest forests in the southern hemisphere, the Platbos forest near Gansbaai. It is Africa’s southernmost wooded area with vegetation that is over 1 000 years old and situated on the slopes of the Baviaanspoort Hills.

Put simply, trees promote life. Not only do trees produce oxygen and sequester carbon dioxide, they also provide homes for animals, recharge groundwater, replace soil nitrates, prevent erosion and more. The addition of an indigenous tree to any environment will have countless environmental benefits.

We live in built environments and it is easy to lose touch with the fact that we live on earth and it sustains us. Getting our hands into the soil reconnects us with nature. Tree planting has benefits that reach far beyond carbon sequestration - different cultures, races and ages come together to do something that benefits all.
