    Dear Friends,

As we move into another new ear, Im reminded that or calling as Christians is to rn withperseverance the race marked ot or s (Hebrews 12:1, NIV). Were not in a 50-ard dash to thenish line, bt a long, sometimes greling marathon. Bt its worth it becase the prize is aneternit with God!

With that in mind, or theme or this isse oCnncnh aan is Press On! In thepages that ollow, we examine what that means, wh its important, the barriers we mstovercome, and the rewards that God has in store or s.

In addition, there are thoghts rom Anne Graham Lotz, the daghter o Bill Graham, Lena andmsel, and the earl chrch ather St. John Chrsostom. And were inclding a great conversationwith Alistair Begg on preaching the Word.

he Amazing Raceis a primetimereality show where teams otwo people who are in a per-

sonal relationship (married couples, best riends, or relatives) race aroundthe world, competing against otherteams. The teams gather clues andperorm tasks or challenges wherethey gain time and advantage overthe competition. They arrive atcheckpoints or Pit Stops along theway. Whoever arrives at the Pit Stoplast is eliminated rom The AmazingRace. Usually, the prize or coming inrst is one million dollars. When I rstsaw this TV show I thought, Theyreprobably playing on the hymnAmaz-ing Grace. Ater all, theres no more

Amazing Race than the Christian lie.

One o the apostle Pauls avoriteanalogies or living the Christian liewas running a race.

Paul oten used this metaphor orword picture in his New Testamentletters. He wrote to the Corinthianchurch, Don't you realize that in arace everyone runs, but only one

person gets the prize? So run to win!(1 Corinthians 9:24, NLT). We onlyhave a limited amount o time to runthe raceits a marathon more than ahundred-yard dash.

    DETERMINATION TO PRESS ON

One essential to winning the raceo aith is a determination to presson. Two times in these verses Paultold the Philippians to press on or

press toward. He said, Not that Ihave already attained, or am alreadyperected; but I press on (Philippi-ans 3:12). Soon aterward he wrote,I press toward the goal or the prizeo the upward call o God in ChristJesus (v. 14).

The word press means to exertenergy; to sweat it out; to put every

possible ber o your being into atask. The Greek word or press, dioko, carries the idea o speeding on ear-nestly. Think about this as a principleor your lie. What i you put as muchdetermination into pursuing Christ as

you do your avorite hobby, like golor shopping? This is the type o ded-ication and determination that Paul istalking about.

In the movie Chariots o Fire, one o

the characters, Harold Abrahams, was running a preliminary race orthe Olympics when he suered hisrst deeat. He went to the bleach-ers, sat down, and began to pout. Hisgirlriend came to console him andhe said angrily (listen or a Scottishbrogue in your mind), I I cant win, Iwont r-r-r-run. She said somethingso logical we need to take it to heart:

But i you dont run, you cant win. Inreal lie, Harold Abrahams went on towin the gold medal or the 100-metersprint. The same is true with your raceo aith: I you dont run, you cantwin. Be determined. Run. Press on.Keep going. Dont stop!

    RECOGNITION OF PRIZES

The second essential in running therace o aith is recognition o theprizes youre seeking. Do you knowthe prize or winning the Olympics2,000 years ago? The winning ath-letes would stand on a pedestal to becrowned with a laurel wreath. It mighthave gotten a little better than that:The citizens would laud them, erecta statue in their hometown, and they

would be exempt rom paying taxes. Not bad prizespublic recognitionand tax-ree living.

In the book o Philippians, Paul spokeabout two prizes: one temporal, one eternal. In a temporal sense, hespoke o knowing his purpose in lie:I press on, that I may lay hold othat or which Christ Jesus has also

laid hold o me (Philippians 3:12).The prize is to come to the point inlie where I discover the reason Godchose meto lay hold o the reasonthat He laid hold o me. One o the

worst ways to live the Christian lieis to meander aimlessly, not knowingwhy God picked you as His or whatyour purpose is in lie. Theres a prizein knowing the reason or which youlive.

Were also promised an eternal prize:I press toward the goal or the prizeo the upward call o God in ChristJesus (v. 14). The call rom above isthe call rom heaven. This is the timewhen the believer is called to glory. The believer crosses the nish line. Atthe end o this earthly lie, God says,Come home, and youre in heaven.

When Paul knew he was at the end ohis lie, he wrote to Timothy, I haveought the good ght, I have nishedthe race, I have kept the aith. Finally, there is laid up or me the crown orighteousness, which the Lord, therighteous Judge, will give to me onthat Day (2 Timothy 4:7-8). As abeliever, you can recognize the prizeo knowing Gods purpose or you on

earthwhat a wonderul temporalprize to keep you running the raceo aith. The other prize is the eter-nal prize: When we get to glory, wellreceive our reward. Isnt that enoughto keep you running?

    PARTICIPATION WITHTHE PACK

The third essential in running the raceo aith is participation with the pack.Let us, as many as are mature, havethis mind; and i in anything you thinkotherwise, God will reveal even thisto you. Nevertheless, to the degreethat wehave already attained, let uswalk by the same rule, let usbe othe same mind (Philippians 3:15-16,

    emphasis added).

Notice the requent use o words likewe and us. Not I, my, and me,but we and us. Runners run betterin packs. Its like iron sharpening iron.

They encourage one another. Whenone is discouraged, the others cansay, Come on, you can do it! Itsimportant to have others around

you. To sum it up: Think progress, notperection. Think together, not alone.Beriend other runners and nish therace.

It was the 1968 Olympics in MexicoCity. By 7 pm at the 42-kilometermarathon, all o the runners hadnished the raceexcept one. Thestadium doors were let open. Sirens

sounded in the distance as the lonerunner appeared on the track in thestadium. He had allen at the 19-kilo-meter point, dislocating his knee andhitting his shoulder hard on the pave-ment. Barely hobbling, bandaged, and wearing the colors o his coun-try, Tanzania, John Stephen Akhwaridragged himsel into the dark stadi-um where a crowd o 1,000 people

remained. A camera crew rom themedal ceremony was sent to inter-view him. Why didnt you quit? theyasked. You werent going to win.Akhwari replied in broken English,My country did not send me 5,000

miles to start the race; they sent me5,000 miles to nish the race.

So here we are on earth, on the way

to heaven. God has given us this timeto pace ourselves, to run well, andto nish well. We cant do it lookingbackwardswell get rustrated. Wecant do it looking around at otherChristianswell get prideul or dis-couraged.

Lets run with determination to presson, no matter what comes our way.

Run recognizing the temporal andeternal prizes God has set beore us.Run with other believers, so we dontlose heart. But most o all, rememberthat we cannot nish the amazingrace without Gods amazing grace.

The postero Rosie the Riveter, a pretty, youngwoman, hair held in a no-nonsensebandana and sleeve pulled back toreveal a strong arm, challenged: WeCan Do It. For believers, pressing on is muchmore than a creed, its a high callingthat reaches an apex at Jesus Christ.

Not that I have already attained,

or am already perected; but I

press on, that I may lay hold othat or which Christ Jesus has

also laid hold o me. Brethren,

I do not count mysel to have

apprehended; but one thing I do,

    orgetting those things which are

    behind and reaching orward to

those things which are ahead, I

press toward the goal or the prize

o the upward call o God in Christ

    Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14)

The apostle Paul realized the mar-athon mentality o living throughboth the small victories and the deepvalleys o lie with the goal o oneday receiving the glorious prize thatwaits. He took a studied approach towinning the prize and answering thecall o Jesus.

    DIVINE DISSATISFACTION

Pauls rst step in his pursuit opressing on was to evaluate his cur-rent spiritual condition with uninch-ing honesty. He readily admittedthat he had not attained perectionnor grasped the ullness o Godspurpose or his lie. Yet, this was

Paul the apostle, who wrote mosto the epistles in the Bible! Initially,God grabbed Pauls attention with apersonal invitation that knocked himright o his Damascus-bound horse. He would endure shipwreck and per-secution, yet he steadily pressed onto bring the gospel, always in pur-suit o greater understanding o andcloseness with Christ.

We might ask ourselves i we aresatised with our Christian walk. Isit all you dreamed it would be? Paulalways wanted more and wanted

other believers to want more as well.Note that he was not dissatisedwith Christ but with his own personalChristian lie. Warren Wiersbe said, Asanctied dissatisaction is the rstessential to progress in the Chris-

tian race. I you want to press on, Irecommend that you get dissatised. This divine dissatisaction is amil-iar among many saints in the Bible.Ater the miracles o the Red Seaand the plagues, Moses cried out toGod, Please, show me Your glory(Exodus 33:18). In Psalm 42, Daviddescribed his deep longing or Godas that o the ongoing thirst o a deer

panting or water. In Matthew 5:6,Jesus said, Blessed are those whohunger and thirst or righteousness. He is pleased with our hunger andour seeking.

    SINGLE-MINDED FOCuS

In our culture, we are usually doingmore than one thing at a time. Were

on the phone, cooking dinner, helpingthe kids with their homework, andwatching the news. CNN recentlycited a scientic study o the resultso multitasking on our eectiveness. It indicated that carrying on severalduties at once might actually reduceproductivity rather than increase it.

Paul had a singular ocus on his

pursuit o the Lord: But onethingI do, orgetting those things whichare behind and reaching orward tothose things which are ahead, I presstoward the goal (Philippians 3:13-14,emphasis added). This might be lik-ened to a case o spiritual OCDbe-ing on the obsessive-compulsive sideo pursuing the Lord.

Single-minded saints are oundthroughout Scripture. David said,Onething I have desired o the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in thehouse o the Lord all the days o my

lie (Psalm 27:4, emphasis added). When speaking to the rich youngruler, Jesus said, You still lack onething. Sell all that you have and dis-tribute to the poor, and you will havetreasure in heaven; and come, ollowMe (Luke 18:22, emphasis added). ToMartha, the sister o Mary, Jesus said,But onething is needed, and Maryhas chosen that good part, which willnot be taken away rom her (Luke10:42, emphasis added).

Is it possible we need to start prac-ticing radical elimination in our livesso we can do one thing better?Weve heard it said that a good thingbecomes a bad thing i it keeps yourom the best thing. In this text, wend Paul in a singular pursuit that hemight gain Christ.

Doing this one thing necessitatesorgetting about the hindrances romyesterday. Forgetting those thingswhich are behind. Paul was not try-ing to minimize his past or his sins; hewas orgetting his spiritual pedigreethat he previously relied on to elevatehimsel above others and validate hisworth: Circumcised the eighth day,o the stock o Israel, o the tribe o

Benjamin, a Hebrew o the Hebrews(Philippians 3:5). He went on to saythat he counted it all as dung that Imay gain Christ (v. 8). Every day wemust renew our objective to knowChrist, and to press on with a clearpriority.

    FORWARD AND uPWARD!

Paul said, Reaching orward tothose things which are ahead, I presstoward the goal or the prize o theupward call o God in Christ Jesus(Philippians 3:13-14). Reaching andstraining orward are terms that reerto athletics. Like the Olympian whopresses orward to gain a raction oan inch or a raction o a second inorder to win the gold medal, we toomust keep the prize held ast in ourminds eye.

Regardless o the earthly hurdlesstanding between ourselves and theprize, we must reach orward. Maybeyou need to keep reaching orward inyour marriage, or ocusing upward inprayers or your prodigal. Maybe youmust exercise restraint to live withina budget, or press on every day in achallenging job. The great missionary

David Livingstone was asked, Whereare you going to go now? He an-swered, Im going to go anywhere aslong as its orward.

Even when he endured the conne-ment o prison, Paul strained orwardto an upward call and a prize. He toldTimothy, I have ought the goodght, I have nished the race, I havekept the aith (2 Timothy 4:7).

Ancient victorious Olympians re-ceived a crown o a laurel wreath, and today they receive a gold medal. For believers, there are many pos-sible crowns waiting or those whostay in the race. For example, i youare longing or His appearing, youwill receive the crown o righteous-ness (see 2 Timothy 4:8); i you standrm through your testing and main-tain your love or Him, there is thecrown o lie (James 1: 12), and, i youhave led others to Christ, the crowno rejoicing has your name on it (1Thessalonians 2:19-20).

All Christians will one day reachheaven, but not all Christians will re-ceive crowns. But those who receivecrowns will not prideully wear them

to gain admiration rom others. In-stead they will cast them beore thethrone o the Lamb o God and say,You are worthy, O Lord, to receiveglory and honor and power (Revela-tion 4:11).

Iloved the Olympics, but Im sobusy that I had to watch a lotonline, ater the act. But I caught

something on video that was amaz-ing, and I think it went viral. It wasjust one point in the womens volley-ball game between South Korea andBrazil. One o the Brazilian womenmade a move that nobody could re-member seeing beore in volleyball.

It was a soccer move and it was aspectacular save. She slid on theoor, kick-saved the ball, and sentit back over the net. You could seeher intensity and the eort she putinto it, as her eye never let the ball. And they won the point, but they lostthe match. She probably had a skinburn and maybe a bruise where she

banged her head, so you wonder ishe thought, Was it worth it? Puttingthat kind o eort and making thatkind o a savewas it worth it, whenwe ended up losing anyway?

Today, as you press on in the Chris-tian lie, I wonder i youre asking, Isit really worth it? Especially whenlie throws you a curveyou go to

the doctor and you get a bad diag-nosis, or your child rebels and yound him on drugs, or your spousewalks out, or you lose your job. Doyou ask, Is it really worth it?

WHEN WE PRESS ON,WE WIN. WE'RE NOTGOING TO LOSE THEMATCH.

Is it worth it to get up 30 minutesearly to spend time with the Lord inprayer and Bible reading? Is it worthit to share the gospel with yourriends and lose their riendship? Is it

worth it to live your lie with integri-ty and purity, and lose a promotionor maybe even get red because oit? Is it worth it to deny yoursel andyour plans and ambitions, and takeup the cross o Gods will and ollowHim in this lie o aith?

Is it worth it to press on to Jesus? You can make up your own mind, but

my answer is Yes! Its worth it! Itsworth it because Jesus is worth it!

When we press on, we win. Were notgoing to lose the match. We have thevictory because Jesus has alreadywon it. Sometimes it helps to knowwhat were aiming or, where weregoing, and why were doing whatwere doing. It motivates us to press

on. So lets look at Revelation 5 orthree reasons that we press on toJesus.

We press on because He is

unequaled in His position. In verse 1,God the Father is seated on thethrone, and in His hand is a scroll, which I believe symbolizes that theperson who holds the scroll has the

ability and the power to ulll Godspurpose or the human race. Hes thevictor, the winner; its like the goldmedal, in a sense. And when no onein heaven or on earth can open thescroll or even look inside it, one othe elders tells John, The Lion o thetribe o Judah, the Root o David, hastriumphed. He is able to open thescroll (v. 5, NIV).

The One who is able to rule theuniverse is the same One who is ableto rule the details o your lie, andHis name is Jesus. Take your lie and

everything thats in it, and lay it downbeore Him. Let Him rule it rightly. Heknows what Hes doing. Hes un-equaled in His position; He is Lord.

We press on because He is undis-

puted in His power. John says, ThenI saw a Lamb looking as i it hadbeen slain (v. 6). In the Old Testa-ment, when somebody sinned, alamb would die in the sinners place. And when Jesus, the Lamb o Godwho takes away the sin o the world(John 1:29), poured out His blood atthe cross to make atonement or sin,we were orgiven!

Hes perect in His power becauseHes the Almighty. In verse 7, Jesusjust walks over and takes the scrollthat nobody else had been able to

I'VE DECIDED I WANTTO LIVE My LIFE ON MyKNEES, My TONGuECONFESSING, "JESuS,yOu ARE LORD. yOu

    ARE KING."

grasp, or even look inside, right outo the hands o God the Father. Hecreated everything in the beginning. He bought it at Calvary. And He hasthe right to rule it.

He made us at creation, and Hebought us at Calvary, so He has theright to rule our lives. He is undis-puted in His power. So why would wedispute His power or resist His will?

And we press on because He is

unrivaled in His praise. Verse 9 says,And they sang a new song. It wasnew because it was about the end

o the story, when Jesus wins andasserts His right to rule. You areworthy to take the scroll and open itsseals because you were slain. Withyour blood you purchased men orGod rom every tribe and languageand people and nation.

Verse 12 says, In a loud voice theysang: Worthy is the Lamb, who was

slain, to receive power and wealthand wisdom and strength and honorand glory and praise! He alone isworthy o all praise because He isLord.

Notice that the our living creaturesand the 24 elders each have a harp(v. 8). A harp represents your song, your joy. Have you lost your joy

because youre separated rom God,or youre angry or oended withHim because o what Hes allowed inyour lie? Do you want your joy back?Surrender your lie to the lordship oJesus. Stop complaining, stop resist-ing. Just give Him everything, andthen Hes in charge, Hes responsible.Just rest in His will, and the joy willcome back.

Ive decided I want to live my lie onmy knees, my tongue conessing,Jesus, You are Lord. You are King.Jesus is the answer; Hes the One

who wins. He is the King o kingsand the Lord o lords. So i He is yourLord, are you saying so? Are youconessing it with your mouth, to theglory o God?

I challenge you to press on to Jesus.Let me tell you, sometimes theresno other reason I press on. I donteel like it, I dont want to, its hard,I hurt, and the pain in my lie goesdeep. But I press on because I knowwhat the goal is. Press on to Jesus! And one day you and I will standbeore him, take those crowns thatHe has given us, and lay them at His

nail-pierced eet. On that day weregoing to know by experience that itsworth it! Whatever the pain, whatev-er the sacrice, whatever you thinkyou have to give up, lay down, leavebehind, let go, its worth it a thou-sand times overbecause Jesus isworth it!

We know were on the winning side.

So lets choose to rest in Him, sur-rendering everything, asking or thepower o the Holy Spirit to enableus to take the next step and live thenext day, to continue this journeycalled the Christian lie, to press onuntil we meet Him ace to ace.

Its not a sprint, its a marathon, sopace yoursel as you aim or the n-

ish line. Keep pressing on to Jesus!

    Pastor Skip,

I recently started listening to your broadcast on 106.9, The Light. Yourcurrent series on the end times is an answer to my prayer o indingsomeone who will teach the unadulterated, pure Word o God. Ater beingdisillusioned by many alse teachings o the past regarding the end times, I

had resorted to just reading the Bible on my own. I asked the Lord to openup my understanding o His Word on this matter. He began to deal withmy heart by drawing me back to the book o Revelation. He led me justrecently to your broadcasts which are very clear and easy to understand. The Bible should be read cover to cover and not just the irst 5 books orjust the NT only. I have some serious studying to do! I believe the Word oGod does not have to be so complex as many teachers have made it... Theministry I am currently a part o also encourages its attendees to bring apen and a notebook to Bible study and service just as you do. I have seenvery ew congregations do this. I do believe it is important because thisway a person will have something to go back to and relect on what wastaught. Thank you or allowing God to use you in this way.

    Sincerely, Martha

But one thing, says he, orgettingthe things which are behind, andstretching orward to the thingswhich are beore, I press on towardthe goal unto the prize o the highcalling o God in Christ Jesus.[Philp-

pians 3:13-14]. For what made himreach orward unto the things whichare beore, was his orgetting thethings that are behind. He then, whothinks that all is accomplished, andthat nothing is wanting to him orthe perecting o virtue, may ceaserunning, as having apprehendedall. But he who thinks that he is stilldistant rom the goal, will never

cease running. This then we shouldalways consider, even though wehave wrought ten thousand gooddeeds; or i Paul, ater ten thou-sand deaths, ater so many dangers, considered this, how much moreshould we? ... Thus too we should act,we should orget our successes, andthrow them behind us. For the runnerreckons not up how many circuits he

hath nished, but how many are let.We too should reckon up, not howar we are advanced in virtue, buthow much remains or us. For whatdoth that which is nished prot us,when that which is decient is notadded? Moreover he did not say, Ido not reckon up, but I do not evenremember...

Stretching orward, saith he; beorewe arrive, we strive to obtain. For hethat stretches orward is one who, though his eet are running, endeav-ors to outstrip them with the rest ohis body, stretching himsel towardsthe ront, and reaching out his hands, that he may accomplish somewhatmore o the course. And this comesrom great eagerness, rom much

warmth; thus the runner should runwith great earnestness, with so greateagerness, without relaxation

See how great a distance this is that

must be run over! See how great anascent! Thither we must y up withthe wings o the Spirit, otherwise it isimpossible to surmount this height.Thither must we go with the body,or it is allowed. For our citizenshipis in heaven (Philippians 3:20), thereis the prize; seest thou the runners, how they live by rule, how they touchnothing that relaxes their strength, how they exercise themselves ev-ery day in the palstra [wrestlingschool], under a master, and by rule?Imitate them, or rather exhibit evengreater eagerness... Teach thy eet tobe sure, or there are many slipperyplaces, and i thou allest, straightwaythou losest much. But yet i thou all, rise up again. Even thus mayst thouobtain the victory Look upward, where the prize is; the sight o theprize increaseth the determination oour will. The hope o taking it su-ereth not to perceive the toils, it ma-keth the distance appear short. Andwhat is this prize? No palm branch;but what? The kingdom o heaven, everlasting rest, glory together withChrist, the inheritance, brotherhood, ten thousand good things, which it isimpossible to name.

First o all, pressing on meanswe have to be ocused on theuture, on moving orward.

Thats the march o the Christianlieorward. I you want to live amiserable lie, always look back over

your shoulder and live in regretwhat it could have been, what itshould have been, what you neededbut didnt get, etc. In Philippians 3,Paul is saying, All o my previouslie, good or bad, is over. We haveto be like that, orgetting thosethings which are behind and reachingorward to those things which areahead (v. 13). Reaching orward is

an athletic term or sprinting or thenish line. At the end o the race, youwill always see the runners stretchingorward, putting all their eort intoreaching that goal.

Secondly, I think it also means thatwe should be dissatised, and I hopeyou are. But perhaps I should explainthat statement.

Whatever level o relationship withthe Lord that you have right now,its my prayer that youll never say,Thats enough. I dont need to getany more spiritual, any holier than Iam. What I have is sufcient. I praythat youll crave more, that youll al-ways want to learn more about Him,and to get closer to Him. I pray that

youll have a holy, sanctied kind odiscontentment.

There is a classic little book by A.W.Tozer called The Pursuit o God,and I recommend it to you. Its onethat truly changed my lie. I recentlythumbed through it, and was struckby the rst couple o paragraphs.Tozer describes the kind o people

who have that pursuit o God. Hesays, These are lives that are markedby a growing hunger ater God Him-sel. They will not be satised until

they have drunk deep o the ountaino living waters.

Thats the kind o dissatisaction Imean, where we have tasted theliving water and said, Its good, its

wonderul, but I want more. I wantto go urther. I want to go deeper.Paul the apostle had that very samedesire. Even ater 30 years o walk-ing with Christ, Paul said he was stillpressing on, still running with every-thing that was in him, still stretchingtoward that nish line. He was goingorward, with that healthy, holydissatisaction that I pray we will all

    have.

Thomas Edison once said, Show me

a thoroughly satised man, and Illshow you a ailure. So its true thatthe more we learn about GodHismajesty, His attributes, His gran-deurand the more we taste o therelationship with Him, the more wesay, I want to know Him more, tolearn more and experience more oHim.

The goal will not be reached until wesee Him ace to ace, and only thenwill we be thoroughly satised!

I PRAy THAT yOu'LLCRAVE MORE, THATyOu'LL ALWAyS WANT

    TO LEARN MORE ABOuTHIM.

Well, every week is dierent, but theone thing that isnt dierent is thatSunday comes around and that theinuences and the responsibilities o

a week somehow or another get old-ed into the preparation. You know, its hard to be involved in the loss olie o someone, or to be engaged inthe pastoral concerns o somebodywhos been diagnosed with a termi-nal illness, or a child whos been lostin a car accident without that actu-ally becoming part o the rameworkout o which we turn to the Scrip-

tures. But when I come to the Bible, Icome to it really the same way, that Istart and try and think mysel empty. In other words, just come to the textand read it, and think what there isthat strikes me. And then I try andread mysel ull, and then I try andwrite mysel clear, and then I try andpray mysel hot, and then I try andpreach and be mysel and orget

    mysel.

Thats a good question, isnt it? Be-cause in the minds o some people,it isnt relevant. And really or as longas Ive lived my lie there have beenprophets o doom who have been

mentioning the act that preachingis in the shadows and its pretty wellover. And yet here we are in thesecond decade o the twenty-rstcentury and the churches that are e-

ective in terms o biblical emphasesare largely those where the Scrip-tures have a central place in all thattheyre doing. And one o the chal-lenges that is represented or olksis the idea o, how do we make the

Bible relevant? And you know, evento ask that question is so wrong be-cause what we discover is the Bible isrelevant. Its only our responsibility toshow how relevant it is. And when wehave a conviction regarding that, thatwe believe the Bible is authoritative,we believe that it is sufcient, thenit gives us courage and condencein opening up the Scriptures and

allowing them to do what God hasintended or them to do.

Well, theres a couple o things.Obviously, theres a huge dierencebetween a model that is kind o anentertainment model and one that isa proclamation model. That seems tome to be airly obvious. And I thinkthe chickens are coming home toroost on that kind o thing already.

People who bought into that ideaand have thought that it was reallygoing to be wonderully satisying, many o them who are genuinely in-terested in coming to an understand-ing o the Scriptures have gone o insearch o Bible-teaching ministries. So thats airly straightorward. Oneo the other things, though, that Ihave detected is that there are some

congregations where the idea opreaching is sort o pass and thatwhat they really believe is the keyto it all is in small-group study. Andwe gather together in small groups

and all share our various ideas. Now,obviously we wouldnt want to standagainst the notion o small groupsand the importance o studying theBible in that way. But when that be-comes a substitute or or an alterna-

tive or the actual gathered congre-gation sitting together under theinstruction o the Bible, then I think itbecomes a dangerous thing and alsoa potentially harmul thing. Becausewhat were called to do is to sit, iyou like, underneath the Word. Inthe old days, in the Scottish pulpits, they were built in such a way that itwas very obvious to the congrega-

tion that the Bible was central in allthat was taking place. And theres ahuge dierence between that senseo the minister himsel being underthe authority o Scripture and thentogether the congregation learningthe same text o Scripture and sittingunder its instruction together, romsitting around in a circle and every-body giving their view on what they

think the passage means or mightmean.

Yes, we are. I mean, were doing itby design, but were also doing it,i you like, by deault, in that as aresult o just doing what we do along

with others who do the same, wediscover that young men in particu-lar are seeking us out, that they aredownloading materials, that theyare inquiring as to how we do whatwe do and why we do it. And on mypastoral team, which is an increasing-ly young team, we also have a clustero interns on an annual basis whothemselves have identied the act

that they would like to come hereand learn what they can about thewhole approach to teaching the Biblein a way that is clear and is obviouslyrelevant.

You mean in terms o peoplespersonal gitedness? Yes, I think so.I think it was Samuel Bolton whosaid that i we preach the Bible, wepreach Christ. And i we preachChrist, then every sermon will at leastby implication be evangelistic. Sothat when we turn to the Scripturesand we realize that the story o theBible is the story o what God has

done or sinners in and through theperson and work o Jesus Christ, then that saves us rom turningthe stories o the Bible into sort omoral precepts. And it also helps usto understand that rom Genesis allthe way to Revelation, the story isthe same, and that is that God savespeople, and that He puts peopleinto His amily, and aith comes by

hearing, and hearing by the Wordo God. And so while some contextsmake it more advantageous to go atthings rom an evangelistic perspec-tive, I nd that people are coming toChristnot in as large numbers as Iwould long or, but nevertheless arecoming to Christjust as a result othe aithul, consistent teaching othe Bible.

What these traits addup to is a portrait o a mature Chris-tian, and to be that you must alwaysbe in the process o growing, adding, and climbingpressing on, or as thispassage says, persevering.

Mature Christians persevere in trou-bles. They wont pick up their ootballand go home, no matter what hap-pens to them. They are committedto the will o God, whatever it is, andhowever it comes.

In Chapter 5 o James, he addressespersecuted, suering believers, those

who are being oppressed: Thereorebe patient, brethren, until the comingo the Lord. See how the armer waitsor the precious ruit o the earth, waiting patiently or it until it receivesthe early and latter rain (v. 7).

Farmers have to persevere. Onesimple reason, o course, is thatthey cannot control the weather.

Whatever comes, comes, and theyhave to take what they get and workaround it. Their attitude must be,Growing something takes time, soI am in this or the long haul, comewhat may, good years and bad years.I intend to be diligent.

Verses 10-11 give a couple o urtherexamples: My brethren, take the

prophets, who spoke in the name othe Lord, as an example o sueringand patience. Indeed we count themblessed who endure. You have heardo the perseverance o Job and seenthe end intended by the Lordthat

the Lord is very compassionate andmerciul.

Job is a classic example o some-body who persevered, because hedidnt understand what he was goingthrough. Job didnt have the advan-tage o going behind the curtain andlistening to the conversation thatSatan and God had together abouthim. He lived in real-time, not know-ing what was really going on behindthe scenes. What happened to him

was horrible, but he persevered. In act, when he lost his children, his home, and his health, the Biblesays he ell down on his ace and heworshiped. He said, The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessedbe the name o the Lord (Job 1:21).Thats perseverance!

So this aithul man was the prime

example or the apostle James o themature Christian that we should allstrive to emulate. Mature Christiansare shaped by the trials and tempta-tions they ace. They remain humble, they are patient, and they persevere.Thats a mature believer.

Spiritual growth is a process, its notinstantaneousand its not an ab-

solute. You can be a spiritual person(and a lot o people these days saythey are) without being a spirituallymature person. You need patienceand perseverance to come tomaturity.

yOu MuST ALWAyS BEIN THE PROCESS OFGROWING, ADDING, AND

    CLIMBINGPRESSINGON.
