    Dear Friend,

As Christians, I dont need to tell you that we live inevil times. We live in a broken world. The reality of

this surrounds us: war, genocide, hunger, prejudice, murder, political lies, environmental disorder, the riseof violence in our mediayou get the picture.

    Evil is everywhere.

How attuned to evil are you? Around this time everyyear, many throughout the world celebrate anold custom that highlights much of the evil in ourworldHalloween. Nearly 80% of American adultsare going to watch a horror film on Halloween night.

93% of American children will be out trick-or-treatingand only about 20% of us wonthand out candy. Asa nation, well spend about 3.3 billion dollars on Halloween-related merchandise thisyear. How did this all start?

Two thousand years ago, the ancient Celtic people celebrated their New Year onNovember 1. It was called Samhain. At the end of the harvest season, the pagans litbonfires and wore costumes and masks, hoping to appease evil spirits and preventcrop damage. Halloween is based upon evil practices but, as Christians, we canredeem the holiday and infuse it with the light of Jesus Christ.

To help us understand our broken world, this edition of Connectionthe magazinedeals with the very real subject of evil.

Josh McDowell, renowned author and my good friend, has contributed an articleentitled Why Does a Good God Allow Evil to Exist? He reminds us that although evilis here and it is real, it is also temporary.

My beautiful wife, Lenya, will help us learn to view temptations and trials through abiblical lens. She reminds us of an important truth: If we arent careful, testings onthe outside may become temptations on the inside.

In Hot Spots well investigate the truth behind that ever famous statement, The devilmade me do it! Just how much do we blame on Satan and just how much of thatis biblical and accurate? Our From the Blog section looks into the proper Christianperspective on ghosts and supernatural beings. Should we be on the lookout forghosts?

Also, Chip Lusko speaks with me about the new documentary Shattered, whichinvestigates the extent and impact of the occult through mainstream channels intothe youth culture.

As always, youll find great resources, articles, and relevant information to help you

grow in your personal walk with Jesus Christ.

    In His strong love,

How many people in America actually believe in Satan? A Gallup poll revealedthat 70% of the people in this country believe in the devil. Half of the peoplepolled said that he was just an impersonal force or the personification of evil.

thers believed that he was an actual personal being. Some saw the devil as simply a

mythological figure. The Bible speaks about the

devil as a very real andpowerful superbeing. Fortysix verses in Scripture mentionSatan; thirtytwo verses mention the devil. Jesus spoke more about the devil thanany other biblical figurealways in terms of warning people against danger. BecauseJesus spoke about Satan, its important for us to understand some things about him.

Why did God make this malevolent being? Take note: Satan wasnt always the evilonea transformation occurred in him.

Initially, he had a high, spiritual position in heaven. It seems that Lucifer was a worship leader for the choirs of heaven. Ezekiel states: You were perfect in your waysfrom the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. Your heart was liftedup because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor;I cast you to the ground Ezekiel 28:15, 17. Scripture indicates that Lucifer was notsatisfied with worshiping Godhe wanted to be worshiped.

Another key text in Isaiah states: How you are fallen from heaven, Lucifer, son

of the morning! How you are cut downto the ground, you who weakened thenations! For you have said in your heart:I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt mythrone above the stars of God; I will alsosit on the mount of the congregationon the farthest sides of the north; I willascend above the heights of the clouds,I will be like the Most High. Yet you shallbe brought down to Sheol, to the lowestdepths of the Pit Isaiah 14:12-15. Luciferlifted up his will against Gods will fivetimes in this passage! And this is theperfect description of sin: exalting yourwill over the will of God. Its saying I wanttotal and absolute independence fromGod in my life. That was the very heart ofrebellion from the beginning.

In the book of evelation 12:4 we read:

His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. Thisspeaks of the onethird of angelic beingswho are the demons that we read aboutin the Scriptures. They are the wellorganized principalities, powers, and rulersof darkness that Jesus described as setout to steal, and to kill, and to destroyJohn 10:10. Heres the bad news: theyreagainst you. The good news? nly onethird felltwothirds are on your side!

Lets look at Satans tactics. There seemto be two primary attacks hes usedthroughout history. First, theres the frontal attack of intimidation. For instance, hetried to persecute the early church. Heinstigated unbelieving Jews and Gentilesto gang up against the early Christians

and kick them out of their jobs, puntthem out of the synagogues, boot themout of town, and threaten them. In somecases, Christians were killed.

The curious thing about persecution isthat it rarely works. Persecution simplyseparates the chaff from the wheat. Those who are really strong believers

    growstronger

    andpreachthegospelmoreboldlywhilethosewho

are Christians in name only say, Hey, Imoutta here! When the chaff leaves, thewheat grows stronger. We read aboutthis in the book of Acts. Every time persecution came, the church grew stronger.

The second method that has provento be more effective than intimidation isinfiltration. If you cant beat them, join

them, right? If persecution wont work, then Satan will try to get Christians tocompromise. The church is either persecuted or polluted by false doctrine.

Jesus told the parable of a man whosowed wheat. His enemy came in andsowed tares that looked just like thewheatbut produced no fruit. TheBible said a counterfeit gospel will bepreached. In Galatians 1:9 Paul said, If

anyone preaches any other gospel toyou than what you have received, let himbe accursed. This is a clear warningthat there is a counterfeit gospel thatwill be taughteven in churches. Paulalso warned against counterfeit ministers: false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles ofChrist 2 Corinthians 11:13. Even Satandisguises himself as an angel of light2 Corinthians 11:14. So its not surprising

that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness see2 Corinthians 11:15. ne day, there will bea counterfeit Christ called the Antichrist. In the book of evelation he arises andforms a satanic trinity comprised of thedevil, the Antichrist, and the false prophet, all working in concert and harmonyto deceive men during the tribulationperiod. When the frontal attack provesunsuccessful, the secondary attack of

counterfeit Christianity proves to be verysuccessful.

Weve seen Satans primary tacticsagainst the church: intimidation and infiltration. Lets look at how Satan attacks uspersonally through temptation. Genesis3:1-7 is the prototype for all temptation:

Now the serpent was more cunning

than any beast of the field which theLORD God had made. And he said to thewoman, Has God indeed said, You shallnot eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said to the serpent,We may eat the fruit of the trees of thegarden; but of the fruit of the tree whichis in the midst of the garden, God hassaid, You shall not eat it, nor shall you

and is the senior pastor ofCalvary of Albuquerque.

touch it, lest you die. Then the serpent saidto the woman, You willnot surely die. For Godknows that in the dayyou eat of it your eyeswill be opened, and youwill be like God, knowinggood and evil. So whenthe woman saw that thetree was good for food, that it was pleasant tothe eyes, and a treedesirable to make onewise, she took of its fruitand ate. She also gaveto her husband with her,and he ate. Then theeyes of both of themwere opened, and theyknew that they werenaked; and they sewedfig leaves together andmade themselves coverings.

John wrote about theenemys approach toEve and Adam: The lustof the flesh, the lust of

the eyes, and the pride of lifeis not of

the Father but is of the world. And theworld is passing away, and the lust of it;but he who does the will of God abidesforever 1 John 2:16-17.

Eve saw that the tree was good for foodand pleasant to look at. This refers to thelust of the eyes. The fact that it was goodfor food and that she tasted it refers tothe lust of the flesh. That it was a treedesirable to make one wise and that in

the day she ate of it her eyes would beopened speaks of the pride of life.

This is how the enemy tempts us today.First he comes with the lust of the eyes. There are many people today who livein a fantasy world. They let their eyeswander and look at certain people orcertain objects and fantasize about them.As a result, their thought life becomescorrupt. Then theres the lust of the flesh.People give in to whatever the body appetite dictateswhatever they want atthat moment. Theres also the pride oflife. This can be so many things, like thepursuit of knowledge or the pursuit ofreligion or morality apart from a real relationship with Jesus Christ. People thinkthat if theyre religious or moral enoughor read plenty of selfhelp books theyrebettering themselves. Anything apart

from repentance and faith in Jesus Christis the pride of life.

Not only did Satan approach Eve by thelust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, andthe pride of life, he also caused her totest and question the Word of God. No

tice he said to her: Has God indeed said,You shall not eat of every tree of the garden? Genesis 3:1. Satan craftily didntdeny that God had spokenhe questioned what God reallysaid. He causedher to step back and question the Wordof God. He made her wonder about thepromises and dictates of Scripture.

Satan does the same thing with us. Hetries to get us to question the Word of

God, question the love of God, deny theWord of God, or even substitute it with alie. How many times has the devil comeand tempted us only to turn and whisperto our hearts, Look what youve done! Hesthe one who tempted usthen he comesto condemn us! At that point you need tostand up with the Word of God as Jesusdid in the wilderness. The Word of Godthwarts Satan.

There is a real hell. There is a real devil. But God didnt create hell for people. Hellwas created for the devil and his angels. He created heaven for youthe destinyis your decision. Will God send people tohell? No. I think people send themselvesthere. I think they reject Jesus Christand seal their own fate. ne person said,Hell is Gods great compliment to thereality of human freedom and the dignity

of human choice. God will honor thechoice of men and women. In fact, whenit comes to eternity, God is prochoice. He tells us to choose life and not death. He doesnt want anybody to perish. Hedoesnt want hell for anyone. He doesntwant anybody to hang out with the devil. But its a choice for humanity. Lets thankGod that through the act of Jesus Christdying on Calvary, all we have to do isbelieve in Him. ur faith in Christ seals

    our ticket to heaven.

Alexander McLaren madea compelling distinction between temptations and trials. He said, Temptation conveysthe idea of appealing to theworst part of man, with thewish that he may yield anddo the wrong. Testing makesan appeal to the better partof man, with the desire thathe should stand. Temptationsays, o this pleasant thing;do not be hindered by thefact that it is wrong. O

    ne of the most haunting

questions we face concernsthe problem of evil. Whyis there evil in the world if thereis a God? Why isnt He doingsomething about it? Many assumethat the existence of evildisproves the existence of God.

  • 8/8/2019 Connection the Magazine - Fall 2010

    20/40

Sometimes the problem of evil is putto the Christian in the form of a complex question, If God is good, thenHe must not be powerful enough todeal with all the evil and injustice inthe world since it is still going on. IfHe is powerful enough to stop wrongdoing, then He Himself must be anevil God since Hes not doing anything about it even though He has thecapability. So which is it? Is He a badGod or a God thats not all powerful?Even the biblical writers complainedabout pain and evil. Evils haveencompassed me withoutnumber Psalm 40:12, SV. Why ismy pain unceasing, my wound

incurable, refusing to be healed?Jeremiah 15:18, SV. The wholecreation has been groaning in travailtogether until now omans 8:22,SV. Thus we readily admit that evilis a problem and we also admit thatif God created the world the way it istoday, He would not be a God of love, but rather an evil God.

However the Scriptures make it plainthat God did not create the world inthe state in which it is now, but evilcame as a result of the selfishnessof man. The Bible says that God is a

God of love and He desired to create

a person and eventually a race thatwould love Him. But genuine lovecannot exist unless freely giventhrough free choice and will, and thusman was given the choice to acceptGods love or to reject it. This choicemade the possibility of evil becomevery real. When Adam and Evedisobeyed God, they did not choose

something God created, but, by theirchoice, they brought evil into theworld. God is neither evil nor did Hecreate evil. Man brought evil uponhimself by selfishly choosing his ownway apart from Gods way.

Because of the Fall, the world now is

abnormal. Things are not in the statethat they should be in. Man, as aresult of the Fall, has been separatedfrom God. Nature is not always kind toman and the animal world can also behis enemy. There is conflict betweenman and his fellowman. None of theseconditions were true before the Fall.Any solution that might be given tothe problems mankind faces musttake into consideration that the worldas it stands now is not normal.

Although evil is here and it is real, itis also temporary. Evil will eventuallybe destroyed. This is the hope thatthe believer has. There is a new worldcoming in which there will be no moretears or pain because all things willbe made new evelation 21:5.Paradise lost will be paradiseregained. God will right every wrongand put away evil once for all, in Histime.

Christians have a justification forfighting evil, immorality, andcorruption. The world was notdesigned with evil in mind and thebeliever has a real basis forfighting social ills. He is not followingthe belief that whatever is, is right. The Christian does not condonewrongdoing by claiming it is Godsworld, neither does he assume thateverything that happens is agreed toby God. God does not desire evil nordoes he ever condone it. He hatesevil, and the Christian also is not onlyto despise evil, he is obligated to dosomething about it. Even though sinis real, it is not something that thebeliever accepts as the way thingsought to be. By identifying with Jesus, the believer has a duty to call thingswrong that are wrong and to speakout when evil is overtaking good. TheChristian is not fighting against God

by fighting social problems.Natural disasters, crime, andmental retardation should not bethe accepted order of things,

because they were never meant tobe and they will not be in Godsfuture kingdom.

However, some people are stillbothered that God even allows evilin the first place. They questionHis wisdom in giving man a choicein the matter. orothy Sayers putthe problem of evil in the proper

perspective: For whatever reasonGod chose to make man as he islimited and suffering and subjectto sorrows and deathHe had thehonesty and the courage to takeHis own medicine. Whatever gameHe is playing with His creation, Hehas kept His own rules and playedfair. He can exact nothing from man

    God does

    not desire

    evil nor does He

    ever condone

    it. He hates

    evil, and the

    Christian alsois not only to

    despise evil, he

    is obligated to

    do somethingabout it

    21

that He has not exacted from Himself. He has Himself gone through the wholeof human experience, from the trivialirritations of family life and thecramping restrictions of hard work andlack of money to the worst horrors ofpain and humiliation, defeat, despairand death. When He was a man, Heplayed the man. He was born in povertyand died in disgrace and thought it wellworthwhile orothy Sayers, Creed orChaos? New York, Harcourt Brace, 1949,p. 4.

The Bible tells us that Gods purposesare sometimes beyond our understanding. For My thoughts are notyour thoughts, neither are your waysMy ways, declares the Lord. For as theheavens are higher than the earth, soare My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughtsIsaiah 55:8, 9, NASB. Paul, in asimilar vein, wrote to the church atome, h, the depth of the richesboth of the wisdom and knowledge ofGod! How unsearchable are Hisjudgments and unfathomable His waysomans 11:33, NASB.

Although the Bible informs us how andwhy evil came about, it does not tell uswhy God allowed it to happen. However,we do know that God is all-wise andall-knowing and that He has reasons forallowing things to happen that are beyondour comprehension.

completely saturated our society. What is the documentary Shatteredabout?

Chip: Shattered is a fulllength documentary that explores the extentand impact of the occult through mainstream channels into the youth

culture. This documentary reveals a disturbing and increasing tempo of

messages that can lead to destructive behavior. Shattered examines

diverse cultural threadsfrom vampire mania in f ilms to how media

and evolutionary concepts became a deadly combination for the

perpetrators at the Columbine massacre. The documentary also

presents practical steps for families to take for safeguarding their

    homes against this occult onslaught.

Skip: What did you learn about evil through the process of making thedocumentary?

Chip: There are cultural patterns and trends at work that we shouldbe aware of. More powerful technology and production techniques are

subjecting media victims to a dazzling array of temptations. Fantasy

lives, avatars, and dark practices have one common denominator: theylead people away from the reality of Gods truth. It doesnt matter if

the technology consists of oldschool Tarot cards or uses a 3 virtual

computer world. The broad road leads you away from a relationship

with God; the effect and outcome are the same.

Chip: Everyone has their own area of attraction orentertainment hot button. vert evil is easy to recognize.

The troubling trend is found in the glamorization of deeply

occult practices typified in the vampire films. The Bible

warns about calling good evil and evil good. When

vampires are mainstream movie stars and you see Twilight

Question:My friend believes in ghosts. When I told her the Bibledoesnt teach that ghostsexist, my friend brought meto I Samuel 28-30, whereseveral references to ghostsare found. Im confused. Canyou please help?

Answer:Goodquestion. I sympathizewith your confusion overthe issue of ghosts. At firstglance, the Bible appears toteach that ghosts are real.

But before I tackle thespecific Scripture reference

you mentioned, lets lookat some general ghostlyterms.

First, we need to define theword ghost. o we meanthat ghosts are people whohave died but now wanderaround earth? If this is ourdefinition then no, the Bibledoes not teach that ghosts

exist. But what if we meansome form of spiritual beinggood or evil that canonoccasioninteract with human beings? According tothe Bible, this is definitelypossible.

Let me stress that itsimportant to distinguishbetween the two definitions.

Pop cultures idea of ghostsas dead humans who hauntthe world has no biblicalbasisbut it is believed andtaught in movies, songs, and stories. Yet we cant justdismiss any and all supernatural activity. The Bible isclear in teaching that super

correctly interpret the text inI Samuel?

By understanding what theBible does teach about supernatural beings, we mustconclude that the apparitionthat Saul saw wasnt a ghostin the popular understanding of the word. Instead,it was something the Lordallowed to teach Saul a lesson.

The context of the section in I Samuel 28 clearlystates that Saul was goingagainst the Lord in seekingthe medium of En or. Butthe raising of Samuel wassomething the Lord ultimately allowed accordingto His purposes. There arethree major views in relationto this passage:

The medium performed themiracle by demonic powers.

The medium didnt trulybring Samuel from the

    deadshe only pretendedto do so.

God allowed the mediumto bring Samuel from thedead to rebuke Saul. Therefore the ghost or apparitionwas permitted by God andnot something the mediumconjured up in her ownpowers.

Any way we view this passage, it clearly does notsupport the popular viewof ghosts wandering theearth, haunting people, and/or inhabiting buildings orgraveyards.

I hope this answer helpsyou in your understanding of

    Scripture.

    Thank you for the question!

    natural beingsdemons andangelscan interact withhumanity.

When we talk with folkswho believe in the deadhaunting the earth, we canbring them to several Bibleverses that teach otherwise.ne of the clearest declarations is found in Hebrews9:27: Man is destined todie once, and after that toface judgment. This meanstheres no walking the earthafter we die. We wont wanderwell wait for judgment.

Lets take a closer look at

angels and demons, sincethese are the two primarysupernatural beings in theBible. Here are a few thingsregarding angels:

od made angels. Angelsare not like God. They arenot eternal and allpowerful. In fact, angels are far closerto human beings. They were

created by God. They have afree will like humans. Angelscan talk, fight, and worshipGod. The Bible even gives usthe names of some angels, like Michael and Gabriel.

ngels do not have aphysical body like humans.Angels are called spiritsin the Bible see Hebrews

1:14, and usually cannotbe seen by the human eye.But sometimes God allowsangels to enter our timedimension so we can communicate with them. Jesustells us that angels are notgiven in marriage see Luke20:34-36, which may meanthat they do not have family

    relations or the ability toprocreate.

ngels have a job. The Bible teaches that angels havethree main jobs. First, angelsenact the will of God. In asense, they are messengersand ambassadors for God,doing what He asks of them.

Second, they help protecthumans see Psalm 91:11-12.Third, angels worship andsurround God in heaven seeevelation 4:8.

ypes of angels. We dontknow exactly how many angels there are, but the Biblestates there are differenttypes of angels. Three common types are described inScripture: the cherubim, whoact as guards, see Genesis3:24, the seraphim, who areworship leaders, see Isaiah6:2-7, and the living creatures, who resemble animalssee Ezekiel 1:5; evelation

    4:6-8.

Here are a few thingsconcerning demons: TheBible teaches that demonsare real.

emons were once goodangels who fell during thefall of Satan see Jude 6.

atan is the lead demon. He is also called Lucifer seeIsaiah 14; Matthew 4.

atan originated sin. Hespends his existence tempting and leading humansfrom God see 2 Corinthians4:4.

atan and demons are notas powerful as od. They

    are under the jurisdiction ofGod.

emons are not the onlycause of evil in the world. The systems of the worldand the works of the fleshare also responsible for evil.

hristians need not feardemons see 1 John 4:4.

At some point in the future, all demons will be cast intothe eternal lake of fire, being separated from God forall eternity evelation 20.

Since the Bible doesntteach that ghosts are haunting the world, how can we

Usually, people use the expression inrelation to something bad they just didlike lying, cheating, or stealing. In fact, its come to mean: Im not responsiblefor what I just did.

So is it true? oes the devil really makeus do something bad? r are there other

    factors involved in our wrongdoing?

The Bible is clearthat the devil doeshave an influencein the world. Buthes not the onlyfactor. When reading through Scripture, three overarching enemiesof the Christian lifesurface: the world, the flesh, and thedevil.

    What exactly arethese three elements?

The Scripture that best summarizes thethree is found in 1 John 2:15-17:

o not love the world or the things inthe world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Forall that is in the worldthe lust of theflesh, the lust of the eyes, and the prideof lifeis not of the Father but is of theworld. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does thewill of God abides forever.

Theworld isbest understoodas thesystemsand principles thatgovernhuman

    ity. Theworldsinternalsystemsincludepride,

materialism, prejudice, greed, and covetousness. The worlds external systemsinclude things such as slavery, hunger, apathy, and injustice.

The flesh best represents the worksof the flesh. The Apostle Paul describedfor us the works of the flesh in Galatians5:19-21. They include vices such as adultery, fornication, idolatry, hatred, outbursts of anger, envy, and many others. The verses in Galatians are a formidablereminder of what plagues our modern

    society.

The final element is the devil. Withoutgoing into great detail, its safe to saythat he is the foe of mankind and theadversary of God. He is a fallen angel; he

    is referred to as Satan.

ur world tends toward two extremesconcerning the realm of the supernatural. Some totally deny the supernatural, saying angels and demonsand evenGodarent real. Then there people, likeChristians, who do believe the supernatural world exists. They believe inGod, angels, and demons. Christians are

supernaturalists. But not all supernaturalists believe thesame. As Christians, the truth of biblicalauthority is critical when examining thesupernatural and demons. Some Christians believe that demons are under every rock, behind every door, and controlling every politician. Check these ideaswith what the Bible teaches.

So the devil can influence someone todo something wrong. But hes not theonly contributing factor. Maybe its ourflesh. Maybe its our worldly systems.Maybe the devil didnt make us do it.

Does the devilreally make us do

    something bad?Or are there

    other factorsinvolved in ourwrongdoing?

ll the angels of God were originally ofthe same nature, spiritual and pure.

Unquestionably they were the highestorder of created beings. They were spirits, pure ethereal creatures, simple andincorruptible; if not wholly immaterial, yet certainly not incumbered with gross, earthly flesh and blood. As spirits, theywere endued with understanding, with

affections, and with liberty, or a powerof selfdetermination; so that it lay inthemselves, either to continue in their allegiance to God, or to rebel against him.

And their original properties were, doubtless, the same with those of theholy angels. There is no absurdity insupposing Satan their chief, otherwisestyled, Lucifer, son of the morning, tohave been at least one of the first, if notthe first Archangel. Like the other sons

of the morning, they had a height anddepth of understanding quite incomprehensible to us. In consequence of thisthey had such knowledge and wisdom, that the wisest of the children of menhad men then existed would have beenmere idiots in comparison of them. Theirstrength was equal to their knowledge;such as it cannot enter into our heart toconceive; neither can we conceive tohow wide a sphere of action either theirstrength or their knowledge extended.

Their number God alone can tell: oubtless it was only less than infinite. And athird part of these stars of heaven thearchrebel drew after him.

We do not exactly know, because it isnot revealed in the oracles of God eitherwhat was the occasion of their apostasy,or what effect it immediately producedupon them. Some have, not improbably, supposed, that when God published thedecree mentioned Ps. 2:6-7 concern

ing the kingdom of his onlybegottenSon to be over all creatures, these firstborn of creatures gave place to pride, comparing themselves to him. It maybe, Satan, then first giving way to temptation, said in his heart, I too will havemy throne. I will sit upon the sides ofthe north! I will be like the Most High. But how did the mighty then fall! Whatan amazing loss did they sustain! If weallow of them all what our poet supposesconcerning their chief in particular,

    His form had not yet lost All its original brightness, nor appeard Less thanarchangel ruind, and the excess f gloryobscured;

if we suppose their outward form wasnot entirely changed though it musthave been in a great degree; becausethe evil disposition of the mind mustdim the lustre of the visage yet what an

astonishing change was wrought within when angelsbecame devils! When the holiest of all the creatures ofGod became the most unholy!

From the time that they shook off their allegianceto God, they shook off all goodness, and contractedall those tempers which are most hateful to him, andmost opposite to his nature. And ever since they arefull of pride, arrogance, haughtiness, exalting themselves above measure; and although so deeply depraved through their inmost frame, yet admiring theirown perfections. They are full of envy, if not againstGod himself, and even that is not impossible, seeingthey formerly aspired after his throne yet against alltheir fellowcreatures; against the angels of God, whonow enjoy the heaven from which they fell; and muchmore against those worms of the earth who are nowcalled to inherit the kingdom. They are full of cruelty,of rage against all the children of men, whom they longto inspire with the same wickedness with themselves, and to involve in the same misery.

In the prosecution of this infernal design, they arediligent in the highest degree. To find out the most effectual means of putting it into execution, they applyto this end the whole force of their angelical understanding; and they second it with their whole strength,so far as God is pleased to permit. But it is well formankind that God hath set them bounds which theycannot pass. He hath said to the fiercest and strongest of the apostate spirits, Hitherto shalt thou come, and no farther. therwise, how easily and how quicklymight one of them overturn the whole frame of nature!

How soon would they involve all in one common ruin,or, at least, destroy man from the face of the earth! And they are indefatigable in their bad work: Theynever are faint or weary. Indeed, it seems no spiritsare capable of weariness but those that inhabit fleshand blood.

ne circumstance more we may learn from the Scripture concerning the evil angels: They do not wanderat large, but are all united under one common head.It is he that is styled by our blessed Lord, the princeof this world: Yea, the Apostle does not scruple to call

    him, the god of this world. He is frequently styledSatan, the adversary; being the great adversary bothof God and man. He is termed the devil, by way ofeminence; Apollyon, or the destroyer; the oldserpent, from his beguiling Eve under that form; and, the angel of the bottomless pit. We have reason to believe that the other evil angels are under hiscommand; that they are ranged by him according totheir several orders; that they are appointed to theirseveral stations, and have, from time to time, their several works and offices assigned them. And, undoubtedly, they are connected though we know not how;

certainly not by love both to him and to each other.

Americans tend t o shop for churches justl ike they shop for clothes and cars. Whenyou look across the church landscape, there are a multitude of c onfusing choices.Whether thats a good or bad thing, I l lleave for you to decide. But without ques-tion, there are a lot of options from whichto choose in the church landscape of

    America.

We have loud churches and quiet ones, oldones and young ones, fun ones and morethan a few boring ones.

Some services last what many would con-sider an inordinate amount of t ime, whileothers f ly by, often featur ing sermonettesrather than expositional teac hing. Thewide variety of church options brings upa fundamental question: What do I wantin a church? What am I looking for in anassembly of believers? What you look forprobably depends a great deal on whereyou came from. Since we have differentbackgrounds, we value diverse tradit ions.

I grew up Roman Catholic; I met the Lordwhen I was eighteen years old. My wifegrew up agnostic. Others have grown upatheistic. Sti l l others came of age in awide assortment of churches and denomi-nations. This means we come to churchwith different kinds of baggage and vary-ing ideas of what church ought to be.

While its important to a sk, What do Ithink church should be? its far moreimportant to ask another question. I thinktoo often we fai l to ask the churchsfounder and director, Jesus ChristtheOne whose idea church was to begin

withwhat He thinks it should be. Its Hischurch, after al l. So what does Jesus thinkthe church should be?

From a New Testament perspective, whatis church al l about? Why do we gatheron Sundays, schedule meetings for othertimes, put together programs, sing songs, hold outreaches, and al l the rest? Why dochurch at al l? And once w e choose to do it,how can we sur vive itthen thrive in it? Iknow quite a few people who go to c hurchand dont survive. They dont make it for anumber of reasons that wel l consider aswe move through this book. But right outof the chute, I want us to look closely atJesus take on the church. He f irst spokeof it immediately after ask ing His disciplesa probing question that stumped most ofthem. Matthew writes: When Jesus cameinto the region of Caesarea Phil ippi, Heasked His disciples, saying, Who do mensay that I, the Son of Man, am? So theysaid, Some say John the Bap tist, some

El i jah, and others Jeremiah or one of theprophets. He said t o them, But who doyou say that I am? Simon Peter answeredand said, You are the Chr ist, the Son ofthe l iving God. Jesus answered and saidto him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah,for f lesh and blood has not revealed t his to

you, but My Father who is in heaven. AndI also say t o you that you are Peter, andon this rock I wil l bui ld My church, and the

gates of Hades shall not prevail againstit. (Mat thew 16:13-18). This pass agehighlights four fundamental truths that wil lhelp us not only to survive c hurch but alsoto thrive in it.

Pastor Sk ips forthcoming book is ent itled, Church? Who Needs It, Pastor Skipshows us that in order to succeed in the future, the church must return to the foun-dation of Jesus Ch rist. Today the church is at tempting to be relevant and contempo -rary in a changing world. But Jesus never told His followers to adapt to the world.Church styles may differbut their foundation should never change.
