CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT AT NMU ACADEMICS

Flexibility The construction industry requires people who possess a wide range of skills and abilities. NMU’s construction management program equips students with proficiencies in many areas, allowing them to thrive in both the private and public sectors. Further, students have the opportunity to pursue an optional minor -- alternative energies, business administration, HVACR, industrial maintenance and Spanish are the most popular.

Laddering Building technology is a two-year associate degree that can ladder directly to the construction management bachelor’s degree (in other words, all of your credits are transferable from one degree to the next). This program provides many of the important fundamentals, such as learning about construction documents, project development, construction methods, surveying and estimating as well as mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.

For transfer students, the faculty group works diligently to assure that credits can be utilized in the most efficient manner.

Students that have had one or two years of a building technology or building science program from their high school can qualify for up to five advanced placement credits from the technical concentration of the degree, which reduces the overall credit requirement.

Construction Management Discover the training ground

for a generation of fearless minds

Career opportunities

Graduates of NMU’s construction management program have a 95 percent placement rate within their field of study. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a steady increase in construction management roles.

Earning potential

The average starting base salary exceeds $50,000 with higher earnings in metropolitan areas and niche market sectors. Fringe packages have been generous too, especially for positions that require significant travel. Median annual salaries for construction managers exceeds $82,000.

Where you might work

NMU construction management graduates are managing a variety of projects. Examples include (but are not limited to) airports, bridges, educational buildings, high voltage transmission systems, hospitals, motels, offices, places of worship, and more.

Some professional titles are estimators, field engineers, project managers, safety coordinators, schedulers, superintendents and various other executive titles.

Alumni have opportunities to be employed in the local area but most venture to regional and national areas and work for larger firms. Boldt, Hill & Wilkinson, M.J. Electric, Mortenson, Power, Walsh and Whitting Turner are a small sample of employers. Ambition and the ability to adapt to challenging situations are a few of the characteristics that are attractive to the many reputable firms that recruit at NMU.

EXCELLENCE & ADVENTURE IN REACH

Fearless in the Face of Finding Employment

Northern Michigan University is always attempting to build, expand and advance itself and the minds of its students. This idea serves as more than just a metaphor for NMU graduate Luke Oberdorfer, who gained valuable, professional experience when offered an internship with a contractor that was working on campus. That internship eventually turned into full-time employment during the creation of the new John X. Jamrich Hall.

After completing the associate’s degree in building technology and the bachelor’s degree in construction management in just three and a half years, Luke decided to pursue a master’s of business administration from NMU’s College of Business.

He was amazed at the amount of planning that went into a complex project with an extremely aggressive deadline. Luke was proud to be part of the team that delivered a LEED certified smart building that is pleasing to the eye.

When the dedication and grand opening was held for the new Jamrich Hall, Luke was working in Texas. The contractor valued his performance so much, it flew Luke to Marquette for the ceremony. Luke’s ability to communicate effectively, solve problems and resolve conflicts are some of the key skills that can be developed at NMU.
