capabilities! they are li"ited to text docu"ents$ & key challenge in i"ple"enting a content6based

si"ilarity search syste" or eature6rich data is that such data is noisy and co"plex$ 7or exa"ple!

consider two dierent photographs o an identical scene! or two separate recordings o a person

speaking the sa"e sentence$ *espite the high degree o si"ilarity between the two i"ages or between

the audio recordings! the digital representations are dierent at the bit le#el$ Co"paring noisy! eature6

rich data requires "atching based on si"ilarity instead o exact "atch! and thus searching or noisy data

requires si"ilarity search instead o exact search$ 4owe#er! si"ilarity search in high6di"ensional spaces

is notoriously diicult 8the so called curse o di"ensionality9$ 4ence! practical ad#anced search

solutions! such as database tools and search engines 8e$g$ Google9! ha#e been li"ited to searching or

exact "atches and tend to work only or text docu"ents and text annotations$ o date! there is no

 practical content6based search engine or "assi#e a"ounts o inherently noisy! eature6rich data$
