Learning Target

I can improve student engagement and content understanding through the use of cooperative learning principles.

Page 7: Cooperative Learning With iPads

Goals• Engage in studying cooperative

learning and multiple intelligences

• Explore the benefits for students

• Practice several structures to use in your classroom

Page 8: Cooperative Learning With iPads

#1 Management Technique Quiet Signal

Qualities of a Good Quiet Signal:

• Students can SEE it from anywhere in the room. • Students can HEAR it when they are interacting in teams. • It's not overly annoying when used 15 times in one day! • Students know how to spread the quiet signal to others. • Room should be quiet within 3 to 5 seconds. If it takes

longer, it's not working.

Value Line

Agree or Disagree:I use cooperative learning in my

classroom.10= all the time 1= not at all

Page 10: Cooperative Learning With iPads

Value Lines

1. A statement is announced and students take a stand on an imaginary line which stretches from one end of the classroom to another. Strongest agree= 10 Strongest disagree = 1

2. Students line up with out talking

3. Students listen to similar point of views (those standing next to them in line)

4. Value line can be folded to make groups of 2 or 4.

Cooperative Learning: What is It?

Cooperative learning is a successful teaching strategy in which small teams, each with students of varying abilities, use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a subject.

Page 12: Cooperative Learning With iPads

Cooperative Learning: What is It?

Each member of a team is responsible not only for learning what is taught, but also for helping teammates learn, thus creating an atmosphere of achievement.

Six Key Concepts of Kagan’s Cooperative Learning

• Teams - participate in teams• Management - non-traditional classroom rules and

norms established• Will - Will to cooperate through structures• Skill - Social Skills• Principles - P.I.E.S.• Structures - Teambuilding, Classbuilding, Mastery,

Thinking Skills, Communication Skills, and Information Sharing

• Four Basic Principles : P.I.E.S.

Positive Interdependence

Individual Accountability Equal Participation Simultaneous Interaction

Page 20: Cooperative Learning With iPads

How Do I Assure Positive Interdependence

• Model group behavior

• Give students precise verbiage to use

• Practice, practice, practice

• Model, model, model

Page 21: Cooperative Learning With iPads

How Do I Assure Individual Accountability?

• Create smaller group sizes. • Give individual assessments.• Periodically check for understanding –

student reports for another’s Point of View.

• Observe groups and record progress and contributions.

• Ask groups to assess team performance.

Page 22: Cooperative Learning With iPads

How Do I Assure Equal Participation & Simultaneous Interaction

Question to AskEqual Participation: How equal is the

participation? What structures are you using?

Simultaneous Interaction: What percent of the class are active participants at any one moment?

Dice Game

Tell your team how you are going to use cooperative

learning in your classroom.

1. Name a quiet signal you are going to use?2. List a couple of norms you will use in your classroom.3. What do you like most about the 4 principles of cooperative learning (P.I.E.S.),why?4. How are you going to group your students for different activities?5. What social skills are you looking forward to promoting in your classroom?6. What structure are you going to try first and why?

Page 34: Cooperative Learning With iPads

Dice Game1. Group members count off.2. Teacher picks number to start

and how many rounds to play.

3. Student rolls dice and answers the question that corresponds to number rolled.• Students can do this

verbally or can write down their answers

Talking Chips

Ideas For My Classroom• • • • • •

1. During a discussion teammates place their chip in the center each time they talk. They cannot talk again until all team members has placed a chip in the middle.

2. All teammates pick up their chip and begin again

Using Technology3. Use Take Turns app keep track

of the time each person has to talk. Instead of using their names, use numbers and have groups number off.

4. Dice: each person in the group has a dice that they move to the center of the board to show it is their turn.
