For this project I worked with the University of California, Irvine Libraries.

The Library Literacy 2.0 project serves UC Irvine undergraduates in the Transfer Summer Program for International Students.

This program admits 20 international students each year to the University of California, Irvine. Library Literacy 2.0 allows the UCI Libraries to develop their reference services for a specific selection of the UCI international student population. Because of the smaller number of individuals in the transfer program, international students will have one-to-one time working with a subject reference librarian and a graduate student in from a foreign language department at UCI, so that they can hone their research skills.

Library and Community

While working for the UCI Libraries over the years as a paraprofessional staff member in the Access Services Department, I have noticed that international students often have a significant language barrier that prevents them from taking full advantage of the library’s resources.

The International Center at UC Irvine talks about the great influx of international students at UCI: “Over 3,000 international students and scholars and about 500 international spouses and children, representing about 80 countries [study at UCI]. The top three countries represented at UCI are China, South Korea and India.” Library Literacy 2.0 allows reference librarians to help international students to become more comfortable with engaging in library research.

The Need for Library Literacy 2.0

So what is Library Literacy 2.0?

This is a program in which 10 subject librarians from the UCI Libraries and 20 foreign language graduate students in the School of Humanities to reach out to the 20 students in the in Summer Transfer Program for International Students, in order to help them understand how to better utilize library resources.

The UCI Libraries will partner with Rosetta Stone® to create a unique version of the the Anteater Public Access Catalog(ANTPAC) and UCI Libraries website, which integrates basic English instructions with foreign language explanations about how to use different features on the library website. The goal will be to help improve the English language skills of these transfer students and make feel comfortable with doing library research.

Proposal Summary

Page 5: Copy of Library Literacy 2.0

1) Regarding the iPads loaded with the Rosetta Stone® software, the UCI Libraries will be purchasing 20 64GB iPad Air tablets in which the Rosetta Stone® software will be administered to the international students.

2) During the first 3 months of the program, each of the 20 international students will meet with 1 librarian and 1 foreign language graduate student 2 hours per week. There will be a total of 40 hours per week of instruction since 20 students x 2 hours of instruction each per week = 40 hours.

3) Following this instructional period, the international students will write a research paper on a scientific topic utilizing research articles they have found in the UCI Libraries. After working on the research paper for twomonths, the students will enroll in the Undergraduate ResearchOpportunities Program (UROP) to do some original scientific research.

1) 20 64GB iPad Air Tablets - $699/each x 20 = $9380

2) Rosetta Stone® Library Solutions Package = $1,000/per iPad = $20,000

3) Humanities graduate students working as language tutors for a

3-month period - $17.44/per hour x 2hrs per student x 20 students x

12 weeks = $83724) Rosetta Stone® Library Solutions software training for the

librarians and graduate students will be 4 hours per week for 3 weeks for

a cost of $5,000.

Total cost of the program = $42,752

Budget for Library Literary 2.0

The transfer students will submit their research paper for their upper division writing class in science, and the paper will be evaluated by the following criteria:

1) Proper APA style for science writing must be adhered to

2) There must be between 5-10 sources used for the paper

3) 2 of the articles need to be obtained through interlibrary loan (ILL)

4) Students need to write a 5 page addendum about how they benefited from the program

Evaluation Plan: Research Paper

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) project will be evaluated by:

1) the quality of original scientific research done by the student

2) use of 10-20 scientific articles to write up the research project

3) proper use of English grammar and punctuation

4) adhering to APA standards for writing up the project

Note: the UROP project differs from the upper division writing paper because the student is doing original scientific research with professors on the UCI campus.
