welcome to issue three of corby spirit magazine. this issue looks at the best ways to enjoy the summer around corby. there are all sorts of festivals and events to enjoy, so see what tickles your fancy!

there’s something for pretty much everyone; from equestrian lovers to music fans, the summer heralds some great events. we’ve been finding out what it takes to put on a music festival with weldonfest 2013 on page 6, who’s having a fling at this year’s Highland gathering on page 10 and why Boughton House are anything but misérable on page 12.

corby spirit has also been on an eco-mission to uncover why corby is being heralded one of the most innovative towns in the country with its futuristic vision for a cleaner, greener approach to energy. with various initiatives on the table, we take a closer look at the town’s infrastructure for electric vehicles (page 44) and how the community can club together, not only for great deals in electricity, but ones that will benefit the environment and the community as a whole (page 26).

and if that’s not enough, find out how to train your playful pooch (page 64) or how to become a published author (page 58)!

if you’ve got any local-interest stories or top tips that you think we should know about for any of our sections, then please do get in contact - it’s about putting the community spirit into corby!

weldonfest is in seventh Heavenweldonfest returns to corby on 22nd June for its seventh annual festival which will once again be held at corby rugby club. organisers have invested in professional staging, lighting and music marquees to make the music festival the biggest and best yet.

making its debut in 2007 the ‘festival’ (which was originally 6 bands playing in a field for 30 minutes each, to a crowd of 500) was created to raise money for a new pitch for weldon united Fc to play on. within two years the festival had raised more than enough money for the club, and began to give away the remaining money to charities and good causes around the area.

this year, the festival will feature 51 acts, mainly local bands and artists, appearing across four different tents and a main stage. there will be a wide a range of music on offer to an expected 5000 music lovers. all the profits will once again be donated to local charities and services in the local area. since its inception in 2007 the festival has raised over £60,000 and given this away to good causes.

an event spokesperson said: “there’s a strong music scene in corby, the bands are prepared to do it for free, and with a more professional feel to the festival this year even more people are going to come down and have a great day.”

one of the headliners of the festival’s five music areas, are the moderators - a lively band that cover an array of floor-filling anthems. Fronted by “the Daddy”, the band are the uk’s leading mod and ska tribute act, who promise to close this year’s festival with the soundtracks of their lives. Playing with passion and high energy that is sure to transfer around the main stage tent, the moderators are sure to bring the curtain down on another epic weldonfest with a fantastic performance.

an event regular told us: “there’s a wide range of music available, for all eras and all genres. the main stage consists of cover bands that people will know. if you’re a fan of music, you’ll love it. there’s a great atmosphere at the festival. it’s a simple, inexpensive, fun day out.”

Cost of event: £12 for 18 years and over and £6 for 13 to 17 years old. 12 year olds and under are free as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Who are Crabby &the boys?

we’re a five piece band fronted by richard crabb. we’re

just mates having a laugh. we’re not looking to get signed

up or anything, we just love playing music. we stood up

in a pub one night, sang some songs we knew and it

started from there.

What kind of music do you play?

we play covers that we enjoy and that people love to hear

when they’re out having a good time.

Who are your musical influences?

Bands such as Blink 182, mumford & sons and Biffy clyro,

we like their sound. we also play some pop covers, they’re

not really what we’re in to but people like them so we

play it and they love it.

What do you feel about Weldonfest?

it’s a great family event. this will be our third festival and we

really enjoy it. we always get a great reaction, we’re hoping

to fill the main stage which has been extended, we’ve

been told that’s because of our performance last year.

Who are Soft Kitty?

we are an acoustic band with adelle kirk on vocals,

mark gill on lead, elliot campbell on drums and megan

Hubbard on bass. we haven’t been together long – i think

we just did out fifth gig!

What kind of music do you play?

we play popular rock and pop covers, with a female slant.

we stick with acoustic guitars. we were tempted to go full

electric but after a couple of gigs we realised the acoustic

rocks as much as the electric.

Who are your musical influences?

we all love different stuff! But one thing is obvious, adelle

and mark have been into Fleetwood mac for a long time.

mark loves amazing guitarists and elliot loves his modern

and rocky stuff. we all have an unashamed like of a lot of

pop music too.

What do you feel about Weldonfest?

it is consistently the best gig of the year, the atmosphere

is amazing. we can’t wait! all of us have done weldonfest

in some form or another, we are veterans! it gets bigger

and better every day. corby is without a doubt the most

receptive and fun place to play. when we go to other

towns it tends to feel quite quiet in comparison!

together for about two years but the band’s been around

for over four years.

What kind of music do you play?

we play a live, raw, energetic punk style of music.

For as long as i can remember, there has always been a Highland gathering in corby – come rain or shine. it’s been a time for the people of corby to come together, enjoy the entertainment and have fun. a place for families to enjoy a day out in the community.

in 2011, over 6,000 competitors and spectators came to the event despite being hit by torrential weather. the gathering kicks off at 9am with local pubs and clubs featuring live bands and competitions. the stevens fun fair also comes along, making it a great family day out which finally finishes at 6pm.

this year Dwayne ashworth, father of Lance corporal James ashworth awarded the victoria cross after being killed in combat last year, will be the festival’s chieftain.

corby is steeped in history and has strong scottish roots with the annual Highland gathering featuring traditional scottish sports, music and dancing each year. events taking place this year include the all england

Highland dancing championship, which is one of the grand slam events in the Highland Dancing calendar. “we will have well over 100 competitors from all over the uk,” enthuses organiser, cllr mark Pengelly. “in the past we’ve had competitors come from australia, canada and ireland.”

attracting bands from all over england – including military bands – is the Pipe Band competition. “the massed band procession at the end of the day is a great climax for the show with hundreds packing the street to see the bands march round corby village,” explains mark. “with the sad passing of Bill rutherford last year, this year’s show will be run by the royal scottish Pipe Band association, London Branch.”

the Grampian Corby Pipe bandas with previous years, the grampian corby Pipe Band will be taking part in this year’s Highland gathering. “the gathering is hugely important to the Band,” explains Paul Dickson, a band member. “if there was one competition we want to win every season, excluding major competitions we may play in, it’s always corby Highland gathering. even when we have been through hard times as a pipe band and have been low on member numbers, we’ve always made sure to have a band at this event. the support we get at corby is always brilliant and we look forward to playing at the gathering every year.”

corby Pipe Band was formed around 1960 by scottish steelworkers who moved down to corby. the Band was run by Pipe major ronnie stewart for approximately 20 years and originally called the stewart and Lloyds Pipe Band. However, when the steel works closed in 1980, an offer was made by the grampian club to move the Band there and was re-named the grampian corby Pipe Band. the holder of the post Pipe major now sits with robert muir who has held this position since 2010.

the Pipe Band believes that being a part of the gathering plays a key part in keeping the scottish links to corby alive, as Paul explains: “i think the Band plays a massive part in keeping the scottish roots and links in corby. we are constantly looking for new members to join and teach children in both piping and drumming. without the Band this would eventually die away in the town.

“the Band playing at the Highland gathering definitely plays its part in keeping corby’s heritage alive too – but i think that the gathering itself also plays a great part in this,” continues Paul.

“there are actually now only four highland gatherings in england every year, with corby being one of the biggest and – in our eyes – the most important. this heritage is hugely important to corby and helped to make corby the town it is today.”

be a part of Grampian Corby Pipe band!the Band is always looking for new members to help keep the scottish roots in corby alive. they practice every monday, 6.45pm-7.45pm (learners) and also at 8pm-10pm (full band). one sunday each month is also used for practice and this date is always advised at a monday practice session.

Want to get involved? then contact Pipe Major robert Muir on 01536 409490 or 07946185175.

Un-missably un-miserableBoughton House talks about its starring role in multi-award winning British musical drama film, Les misérables.

this great house that adorns the a43 just outside geddington gives me shivers every time i drive past it. not because gary Barlow was

there last year for X-Factor, not because that lake makes me think ever-so-slightly about colin Fir th as mr Darcy emerging from a lake in Pride

& Prejudice (well maybe a bit), but because it’s such a magnificent building that just leaves me in awe.

acquired by the montagu family in 1528, Boughton started as a simple tudor manor. However, it was third owner ralph montagu who embarked on the House’s dramatic changes that began 150 years’ worth of expansion. For ralph, later to be 1st Duke of montagu, a passionate builder and patron of artists, the transformation was the pursuit of a dream – to bring French beauty and style to an english landscape.

nearly five hundred years later, the House still displays a staggering collection of fine art paintings, including work from gainsborough and van Dyck, Boulle furniture, one of the finest privately held armouries in the uk and porcelain once owned by French royalty. not to mention 52 chimney-stacks and 365 windows…

the House is often called ‘the english versailles’ due to its French architectural style, which was undoubtedly the clincher in the casting of Boughton House as the family home of one of the key characters, ‘marius’ (played by eddie redmayne) in the oscar-winning adaptation of Hugo victor’s Les misérables. the House also provided the setting for his wedding to ‘cosette’ (amanda seyfried).

Les misérables received widespread acclaim across the world and northamptonshire’s Boughton House certainly played a starring role.

to love or have loved, that is enough. ask nothing further. there is no other pearl to be found in the dark folds of life. victor Hugo, Les misérables

and here’s the really exciting bit - Les misérables will be returning to northamptonshire on sunday 18th august as Boughton will be holding an open air screening of the film on the House’s lawn. you can take a picnic and enjoy a glass of wine or two, whilst you sit back and enjoy the film in the grounds where it was partially filmed. i can’t wait for this!

gates will open at 7pm with the film commencing at 8.45pm. For more information and to purchase tickets please visit http://www.wegottickets.com/event/215489

there’s only one thing i can think of that might be better than watching the Les misérables film, on the grass, right in front of the house actually in the film, and that would be getting married there… the only people who have previously been married at Boughton House (not counting marius and cosette because that wasn’t really real…), are members of the House’s family, but this year for the first time, the House has opened its doors to couples looking for that dream wedding.

offering the perfect wedding setting, couples planning to tie the knot will be swept away by the grandeur and beauty of the historic venue and Boughton’s extensive grounds. couples can wed in the intoxicating great Hall, the largest and most striking room within the House, surrounded by exquisite fine art and beneath the spectacular ‘apotheosis of Hercules’ celling that dates back over three hundred years. Brides-to-be can choose to arrive in prestige in a horse drawn carriage or descend the mighty staircase. each wedding has a team of dedicated staff to guide couples through their perfect day’s preparations and help create a bespoke menu, whether it’s for a formal banquet or canapé reception. there is even an option of an outdoor ceremony, marrying under the grand colonnade that will keep the bride and groom and the wedding party protected from whatever the British weather has in store.

Boughton is today very much alive, a home, a place of beauty and serenity, its beauty and aura have to been seen to be believed.

Please visit www.boughtonhouse.org.uk for more information or go along and take part in a comprehensive tour covering 20 rooms, viewing the extraordinary complexity of the building, with its 7 courtyards, 12 entrances, 52 chimney stacks and 365 windows.

every year, approximately 350 people in northamptonshire discover that they have a serious visual impairment. the northamptonshire association for the Blind (naB) provides a lifeline to those at the time they need it most. Linda McKeown finds out more about this vital service.

naB is a local, independent charity within northamptonshire that provides free and confidential support for blind and partially sighted people in all aspects of their lives. the charity aims to provide the services and support people with sight loss need to lead full and rewarding lives.

Providing a lifeline to the visually impaired

the Enable Serviceif sight loss is making life dif ficult for you, then naB’s countrywide ‘enable’ service can help. it gives friendly advice, information, practical assistance and equipment to help reduce the impact of visual impairment – for you, and your family or carers.

By talking things through with you, in your own home, the enable service shows you how to maximise whatever useful sight you may have – enabling you to carry on doing the things you enjoy.

it will also identify ways to help you stay active, independent, healthy and safe.

alternatively, if you simply just need understanding and support in times of emotional upset or crisis – they can offer that too.

the enable service is totally confidential and it’s free. allowing you to use it whenever you need it.

the Mobile Sight Centreeach year the mobile sight centre helps hundreds of visually impaired people and their families. not sure if it can help you? if your eye sight causes you problems, then it could help. so why not visit naB’s mobile sight centre when it’s in your area?

naB’s friendly information officer, Fred cannon, will be on board to offer specialist advice, support, information, aids and equipment.

the mobile sight centre visits corby twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month, 10am-2pm.

the next dates the centre will be visiting are June 14th and 28th at corporation square, and 12th and 26th July.

ASK HANNAH!

what we are seeing here is Fear, fear of the unknown, fear of rejection, fear of failure and this fear has stemmed from a lack of confidence and self-belief. classically once children demands are less one can drift into a lack of purpose and direction, which in my opinion leads to a lack of self-love, as life has been about everybody else and your needs have been sacrificed. so now that your lifestyle has changed, it’s time to exchange these feelings of lack, for love and re-ignite the respect that you once had for yourself and your life.

so now to work on the fear… we go through life creating ‘comfort zones’; within these zones we have true confidence in our abilities. to feel this confidence we must have an unwavering belief that we can do what’s expected of us by ourselves and others, essentially we like to be an ‘expert’. this belief usually comes from the reference that we have done it before, we have completed research or training to gain the necessary knowledge or through practice and repetition. right now you are an ‘expert’ at being a mother and a wife, but anything outside of your current comfort zone seems like too big a challenge. now is the time to step out of your comfort zone and create the life you want.

i work with clients to build their self-confidence by looking at their past, present and future and i will share a few ideas with you that you can start working on today:

the past:Looking back to your past successes and triumphs can remind you of situations and circumstances where you had once excelled but have perhaps forgotten. reminisce on all your previous achievements, great or small. For example, the seemingly insignificant “i sold my first piece of art at the village fete” is just as important as “ i gained a first class honours in Law from cambridge university”. a great exercise to get this process in motion is to put together a personal portfolio. this could take any form you like, a cv, a personal profile, a diary, a selection of pictures, whatever means the most to you. the key is to remind yourself of the great things you have achieved, done and enjoyed in your life to date. this is not just about the compilation process but also the masterpiece that you will be left with to look back on whenever you need a boost.

sometimes we forget just how great we are and this will be an instant reminder!!

the present:However limited your options seem, you will be able to find significant possibilities and positives within your life right now and this is where we need to draw your focus. showing gratitude for what you have, no matter how trivial it may seem, is key to turning your feelings of lacking options and fulfilment into those of abundance. try writing a list of things you are grateful for, to get the best results this needs to become a habit so if you can, try this for at least 30 days to build a more positive mind-set. Personally, i like to do this every day, in bed just before i go to sleep each night. i think of at least 3 things that have emotionally impacted me that day and simply write them down. Here are some examples of the contents of my gratitude Lists:

i gave up work 12 years ago to become a full-time mum and wife. my children have left home and now i feel like it’s time that i went back to work or do something for me again. the thing is that i’m petrified and i have no idea what i can do. Help!!?

1. my loving and supportive family and friends2. my health; i am strong, fit and well3. my dedicated and thoughtful partner4. my shiny, sexy new car; zippy and economical 5. Beautiful, sunny spring day6. great break in spain; sun, golf and tapas7. Dinner with old friends; great to reminisce

By taking the steps to appreciate what you already have will place you in the position to create bigger and better things as you move forward, so start creating a solid foundation to excel from.

Feeling good now creates positive vibrations and starts the ball rolling….

the Future:now that you are ready to take control of your life, you need to start making it happen. Begin by thinking what you want from life and then transform your general dreams of happiness, better health, or a new job into a goal. For example; ‘i want to go back to work’.

we then need to make this more precise by creating a smart* goal. a smart* goal is attainable because it is specific, measured, achievable, realistic and timed:

S - Specific; know what you wantM - Measureable; continual assessmentsA - Achievable; progressive targetsr - realistic; manageable stepst - timed; work to a schedule

e.g. ‘i want to find a fulfilling job with part time hours, working with children, by the start of the new school term.’

this is by no means set in stone, it will be continually developing as you develop, but it will really help you affirm it if you write it down and have it visible, so you are reminded of your focus every day.

keep your mind, eyes and ears open to the possibilities around. opportunities are everywhere.

i am a strong believer in destiny, not a predetermined destiny but one that we control through the choices and decisions that we make on our journey through life. so it’s now time to take up the reins, think about what it is you want to achieve, focus on it, work on it and make it a reality. if you would like assistance with this process then you can work with Hannah to get the results you desire. good Luck!!

TRAINER

Full-bodyFITNESSwhy not try out this 4 week workout for an extra boost to your workout.

Four week plan

Here we have a 4 week workout plan training the chest and back, back, arms & core and legs, shoulders & core. we’ve included a back-off set at the end of some of the exercises.

to achieve a back-off set you need to drop your lifting weight by about 40% and do as many reps as possible and put your muscle fibres under tension for longer, promoting more muscle growth.

training - each session should take around 50 minutes and include a warm up.

Days - work though the 3 workouts once a week leaving a rest day between each session.

Warm up - take 5 minutes on an ergo (rowing) machine or another piece of cardio equipment. then do sit ups, squat thrusts and press-ups back-to-back for a further 5 minutes.

reps - Do ten reps for the exercise and as many as you can for the final set of each exercise stated in the workout.

tempo - take one second to lift and two seconds to lower. Pause at the top or bottom if you need to regain control of the weight.

rest - rest for one minute between each set and rest for two minutes between each exercise change.

because your body adapts to a new training stimulus after 4 weeks we suggest you make adjustment to your routine after this time.

to boldly go...at the ripe old age of 39, i already get the sense sometimes that technology

is leaving me behind, but this time, i’m way ahead of the game. i used to

see this stuff when i was a kid! on star trek.

Have you heard about Leap motion? it’s a little sensor that senses your hands and fingers

and follows their every move. your hands move in the open space between you and your computer, and the sensor translates those movements into something real on screen. using motion and gesture controls you can

crush bad guys with your bare hands, make music and art with just a finger or potentially

soar around the sun. you’ll be interacting with games, designing, creating, and exploring all in

3D, and all without touching anything.

it’s said to be the world’s most natural technology that just might change the world,

and certainly something that will change the way we use technology. Having read a

whole load of reviews, it seems that it is early days for this product though and although it

promises to be the future, there is a little more work to be done on it yet.

£26Games reviewtomb raiderXbox 360, PS3 & PC

in a word: awesome.this reboot of the original tomb raider, with its own original story seems to be wowing all its audiences with a new, younger and seemingly less busty version of Lara croft. taking its cues from the highly successful uncharted series gameplay style, marrying them with elements of Lost and Hunger games.

the story takes you, in cinematic style, through discovery and adventure but capitalising on the “survival” approach. Lara runs, jumps, crouches and climbs, she garrottes and kills as the story moves relentlessly forward, with an increasingly large arsenal of weapons.

the game does a great job of balancing its narrative against game-playing although early on, it does feel more like much of the game is spent watching rather than doing. However, if you want to spend an exciting 20 hours or so playing a game, i whole-heartedly recommend this one!

what would you say, if i told you that you could change your electricity supplier and it would benefit you, corby charities and the environment? trudie Avery reports.

you might say; i’m ok as i am, thank you, i can’t really be bothered. But… Let me tell you; it’s just so easy! i’m not writing this article because i care about electricity suppliers, i’m writing this article because i’m absolutely passionate about good causes around corby and i’m passionate about reducing co2 emissions. and wouldn’t it be nice to save you a little bit of money too?

you may be one of hundreds of people who have never switched your electricity supplier, for a variety of reasons; maybe you pay by cash card, maybe you pay by Direct Debit and are happy to stay as you are, maybe you’re just unsure how it all works… well, if ever there was a good time to look at something different, this could be it.

electric corby, a community interest company formed with the support of the Borough council, has spent the past 18 months looking for the best over-all deal for the people of corby. after extensive research, they have launched electric corby community energy, which offers consumers better green deals and gives corby a unique deal with supplier green energy uk that will see profits shared and ploughed into community projects in corby. it works like a co-operative, so the more corby joins in, the more corby gets out.

How much money will i save?Depending on your current tarif f, this will vary accordingly but electric corby community energy offer competitive rates with a choice of 2 simple green tarif fs, although businesses have different tarif fs to reflect their own bespoke needs. to find out how much you could save, visit www.electriccorby.co.uk/communityenergy and type in your postcode. the good thing about community energy is that you are not penalised if you are a cash card payer, the rate is the same universally. this overcomes a traditional wrong in energy tarif fs, those that can’t afford it (can’t get credit for DD) subsidise those that can. with electric corby community energy everybody can have either of the two green tarif fs.

Who will benefit?any community project can benefit; you just need to apply! so far, potential beneficiaries that have been approached include Lakelands Hospice, adrenaline alley and the Food Bank at Hope church. imagine, by switching to community energy, you could be supporting the expansion of the Hospice at Home service at Lakelands or contributing to the much needed roof repair at adrenaline alley.

and this is just the start, over the years; a percentage of all monies paid into the scheme will be reinvested into the local community. when we have 2,000 electric corby community energy customers we will be investing over £60,000 in local charities and projects every year. there’s definitely a feel good factor in that!

Page 28: Corby Spirit Issue 3

How will it help the environment?all energy sources are 100% green. electric corby has teamed up with green energy uk to supply the electricity to this project with generators from the following sources:

biogas - a tomato grower in Hertfordshire, has been supplying green energy uk with electricity since 2001. the biogas released from waste vegetable matter is captured and burnt to heat the greenhouses and produce electricity. the resulting co2 is pumped into greenhouses to feed the plants.

Pig manure - Pig slurry is fed into an anaerobic digester and the gas released is captured and burnt to generate electricity. the fertiliser produced as a by-product is used to feed the crops, which are then fed to the pigs the following year. a real circle of life!

Combined Heat and Power - at a housing development in aberdeenshire a combined Heat and Power (cHP) unit is supplying heat and hot water to up to 500 flats, to a sports changing facility, and to the council owned ballroom, leisure centre and ice-rink. the excess electricity produced is bought and supplied to customers on the Pale green tarif f.

Hydro Electricity – Harnessing British weather, hydro-electricity means taking the force of free-falling water and converting it into power. some of the energy comes from small hydro-electric schemes in scotland, Dorset and cornwall.

Solar Energy - a solar cell (or a ‘photovoltaic cell’ to you scientists out there) takes the light from the sun and converts it into power.

Wind turbines – you may either love them or hate them, but they are a great way of using our natural resources to create electricity without costing the earth.

biomass - produced from organic material – that’s wood, plants and animal waste to you and me. this comes either directly from plants, or from waste products from industry, agriculture or your very own home!

i made the switch

Katalin Korondan of oakley vale says ‘i wanted to have solar panels on my roof, so buying green energy was the next best thing. i try to be green in everything i do and when i changed i ended up saving money too!’

Daniel Earl of gretton says ‘changing our energy supplier was really easy, we did it on-line, and then got confirmation a few days later once we sent in our meter reading. the thought that the benefits from our energy tarif f is given back to local projects like Lakeland’s was a big plus for us.’

How do i switch?ok so you’ve worked out that you will save money, you will be giving your support to all sorts of great causes right on your doorstep, and you will be helping to save the planet, what’s next?

Phone: call 01536 388026 and our super friendly community energy team will talk you through the switching process and answer any questions you have.

online: go to www.electriccorby.co.uk/communityenergy and fill in 1 simple form to start the process. the community energy team will support you all the way with minimum fuss and disruption to you.

Who is Electric Corby?electric corby is a not for profit, community interest company with a plan – a plan to help corby become one of the most environmentally and economically sustainable areas in the country. corby is the fastest growing Borough in the uk, and will double its population to 100,000 by 2030.

the community interest company is well on track to make corby the practical community scale test bed for new sustainable ways of living, working and travelling with the following projects already started:

electric vehicle charging point infrastructure

zero energy Bill Homes – electric corby is building 8 new “traditional” homes with clever energy efficient additions that will be guaranteed to have no energy bills for the next two years

Demonstrating and monitoring several energy efficient elements on different buildings in corby as part of a pan european project to design the “District of the Future” (subject to contract)

Building an exciting cleantechHub at the corby enterprise centre to promote and demonstrate electric corby’s activities and act as an attractor for new energy efficient engineering companies

offering a totally unique new green electricity supply for domestic and business customers, electric corby community energy

corby has a real opportunity to become the ‘electric capital’ of the uk, and as this infrastructure encourages more people to take up sustainable approaches to living and transportation, the area is set to attract international interest as a place for businesses with a focus on clean technology to invest.

summer time! Bringing the inside out! summed up perfectly by Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, it’s ‘summer, summer, summertime, time to sit back and unwind’! and what better way to do so than out in the garden enjoying the warmth of the sun.

the garden is an extension of your home, treat it as another living space. not only will this increase the visual size of your property but it will give you another area to play about with and experiment with your inner artist, creating yet another fabulous room!

the garden can be given areas, just like the home; a dining area, a lounging area, a cooking area, a play area. each one of these can have interesting focal points and be dressed differently to the next.

Anna Stone and Susie Wooster’s top ten tips for bringing the inside out!

1 introduce beautiful seating arrangements in your garden. Be it

a large or small garden, get creative. an outdoor beanbag or hammock for the lazy summer afternoon is comfortable but a great source of fun for the kids too

2 a fabulous table and chairs for the evening meal. choose a material

that can stay out all year round.

3 a parasol over the dining table can incorporate lighting, to create

that ambient glow. team it with scented candles… et voila! you have a cosy dining room outdoors

4 an external clock to help you to stay focused on the daily routine

without having to go back inside

5 Put colourful throws on the outdoor chairs, so that as the evenings get

chilly you can wrap up and stay warm but remain outside

6 invest in a table with integral fire pit, such as the Palermo 100cm

square fire pit from, van Hage. the integral fire pit is great for keeping warm or even cooking your food on; alternatively you can swap the pit for an ice bucket to keep beverages chilled on the hottest of afternoons!

Page 31: Corby Spirit Issue 3

7 mirrors work beautifully in a garden, opening the spaces up and creating another dimension. Hanging

them amongst trailing vines on fencing is a great way of layering interest and creating a talking point

8 think about your planting, choose plants that, when in bloom, compliment one another. as with any interior

space, colour co-ordination is key to pulling a scheme together and making it look cohesive and deliberate

9 an ugly storage shed can be given a new lease of life by painting it a vibrant colour. consider fixing

latticework to the sides and growing trailing plants over it. even in the smallest of gardens this would allow what is deemed a necessity and is often an eyesore, to become a beautiful feature and talking point

10 a garden can have artwork too. on a small scale, decorative plaques introduce humour and colour. on

a larger scale, if you have an unsightly wall consider having a mural painted on it by a local artist. one of our particular favourite mural artists is rene viner - see some of her work at www.reneviner.co.uk.

garden

may, June and July are perfect for getting out in the garden, so get your gardening gloves on and find out just what a tonic it is to get down and dir ty in the flower beds. Sam bosworth offers some top tips below.

may is the time to get most of your plants outside after growing them on in the greenhouse, but don’t be too keen. tomatoes, runner beans, courgettes and summer flowering bedding plants need to be kept frost free, and this area is prone to late spring frosts, especially if you live in a frost pocket or a low lying area. as my Dad always said, don’t plant your bedding plants out until the end of may if you want to be sure of missing the frosts. if you are planting dahlias and canna plants, be especially careful if you have grown them on in a greenhouse before planting out, the soft shoots will be easily scorched by cold nights, but if you

are planting the tubers directly intro the ground, early may should be ok as by the time the shoots emerge the threat of frost should have passed.

in the vegetable garden, there will be so much to do this year in a short space of time, so don’t expect too much time in front of the telly! as potato shoots emerge from the ground, earth soil over the new shoots, this will really help to increase the yield, and will keep the tender shoots away from frost. By doing this you will also create a small ‘trench’ between your rows which will help to keep water around the tubers as they grow. remember potatoes like lots of water to thrive, and even though we must all treat water wisely i feel fairly confident we will not be on a hosepipe ban this year!

Finally, going back to our spring flowering bulbs, it is really important not to chop the foliage off the plants when they have finished flowering, the leaves will photosynthesise and produce food which will be transported and stored in the bulb. it is this food store, which enables the plant to hibernate until next spring.

2014 will mark 500 years of the Brudenell family at Deene; and like the house, the garden has undergone many changes during that time.

the huge formal parterre and viewing tower to the east of the house, complete with rectangular fishing pond of the early 17th century which declined over time, was swept away by the landscape movement of the 19th century, giving us the landscaped park and lake spanned at its junction with the formal canal by a fine stone bridge that we see today.

the red brick walls of the old kitchen gardens are the oldest feature of the current gardens, having been built in the early 18th century. although the kitchen gardens are no longer used to raise fruit and vegetables, its outer wall provides a lovely backdrop to the long mixed borders filled with beautiful scented Philadelphus, roses and other shrubs under planted with masses of herbaceous plans and spring bulbs. the walls themselves are clothed with climbing roses to show them off beautifully.

the long borders are separated by a circular hedged garden named after the four seasons statues contained within.

the focal point of this garden is the huge central urn, lavishly planted with tender perennials for summer. at the far end of the long borders is the stone summerhouse built by the 7th earl of cardigan, who together with his wife adeline, were the flamboyant family members; having built the summerhouse to entertain both his and her ‘friends’.

the most striking feature of the gardens at Deene Park is the box hedged parterre layed out to the south of the house. this was designed by David Hicks and planted out in the early 1990’s. Four outer beds contain clipped lavender; the four inner are filled with perennials such as geraniums, salvias, iris, nepeta, and spring bulbs such as Hyacinths & tulips. three beds arranged along the central east-west axis of the parterre have roses climbing over frames, and a lovely mix of perennials below. a very quirky feature of the parterre, not in the original design, are the four topiary teapots. why teapots? Because tea is mr Brudenells favourite non-alcoholic drink.

as with all gardens, those at Deene Park never stop evolving. at present the white garden is being renovated after shrubs became overgrown and problematic weeds established. recent new features include a topiary garden, and a herb garden. the collection of named snowdrops and acres of wild snowdrops that surround the formal gardens become more spectacular every year.

the establishment of a major international equestrian event is a success not just for rockingham, but for the region as a whole.James saunders watson

rockingham castle has stepped up to the plate this year by earning the privilege of hosting the Brigstock

international Horse trials. this very prestigious event was in danger of being lost to the area when owner of Brigstock estate, David Laing, went looking for a new home for the trials he had spent many years developing.

British eventing were particularly interested in retaining such an important event in the region and discussions with rockingham castle

estate proved successful. the event will be taking place in the beautiful great Park with outstanding views over the surrounding countryside. James saunders watson, owner of rockingham castle, said “this is an outstanding achievement for rockingham. the establishment of a major international equestrian event is a success not just for rockingham, but for the region as a whole. the castle’s great Park is an outstanding show ground with all the ingredients required to host a large equestrian event.”

this equestrian event, is not only an important event in the British eventing calendar but is a great opportunity for corby to play host to a whole plethora of guests, from the likes of you and i, to high-flying equestrian types looking for accommodation and hospitality. the event has built up a first class reputation amongst riders and visitors whilst based at Brigstock,

and rockingham castle hope to build upon this success to grow and develop it into a major regional event.Don’t be mistaken though; you don’t have to be horsey to enjoy a great day out the Horse trials! even the wax jacket is not obligatory. i’m sure there will be plenty of drama on the demanding cross country course designed by internationally acclaimed

Philip Herbert, but there will also be a bouncy castle, falconry displays, animal petting area, climbing wall, Landrover terrapod, trailer driving experiences and plenty of shopping opportunities and catering available. the event will include novice, Be 100, intermediate, 1 & 2 star international cross country classes, as well as show jumping & dressage classes.

the Horse trial will take place at rockingham castle over the weekend of the 17-19th may and on saturday and sunday it costs £10 per car, open between 9am and 5pm.

are you tired of waiting in long queues at petrol stations, to fill your car with over expensive fuel that allows you to travel

to work every day? well, corby might have the answer to your problem. go electric.

after being selected as one of eight “Plugged in Places, the midlands already has over 20 electric charging points; and with 18 more to be put in place around corby, the town will have one of the largest numbers of points in the uk. Plans have been made to put a “superfast” charge point in the multi storey car park in willow Place, as well as other highly accessible charge points for public use around the town centre.

So, why would you choose an electric car? it’s an argument that has polarised opinions for several years. Put aside the price and the range of the engine; and you’ve got yourself a quieter, smoother drive, that’s more reliable than a normal engine and doesn’t require those tedious oil changes. add to that, the fact you’re driving a car that reduces pollution; you can quite literally breathe easy, inside an electric vehicle.

2013 looks like it could spell the breakthrough for electric cars, with several models released this year. the impressive amount of charging points in corby, could see the town becoming a stronghold for the low emission, noise reduced vehicles, as more people begin to see the benefits of choosing electrical charging points over extortionate fuel prices.

So what is availablethe renault ZoE will be available in the uk this summer, and is expected to be sold at around £13,000.

the flagship vehicle of renault’s four electric cars is said to be stylish, af fordable and incredibly versatile, and at roughly the same size - and same price - as a new vauxhall corsa, the zoe may be extremely competitive in the market.

there is a catch (of course) with the surprisingly low valuation of the price, and that is the £70 per month charge for the lease of the battery to run the car. some good news though, it costs only £2.56 (per 90 miles) for every charge and the first three years of charging are completely free at public charge points. value for money? i’ll let you decide.

Bmw have unveiled their ActiveHybrid3, where the 6-cylinder engine and electrical drive combine to provide a unique driving experience in addition to a better fuel consumption and lower emission figures, in a sporty, but fuel ef ficient style.

Priced at approximately £30,000 the hybrid looks as luxurious as you would expect from Bmw, and is said to be a reasonably successful, fuel ef ficient drive. it may need polishing fur ther however, if hybrid cars are to become the next big thing considering its extraordinary expense.

another car that’s set to be released in the next 12 months is Volkswagen’s E-UP. the car becomes the german brand’s first electric vehicle, and will have a range of up to 93 miles as the company attempts to quell the myth that electric vehicles aren’t practical for everyday use. it also only takes half an hour to charge the car up to 80% of capacity.

renault has also released the Kangoo Z.E Van as part of its zero emissions range and was voted international van of the year 2012. the nifty van costs approximately £13,000 and the engine has a range of 100 miles. the sleek, stylish van carries itself like any regular van would, and being cheaper to run, more ef ficient and easier to drive, the kangoo z.e van may quickly become a favourite among many businesses.

The new Fiat 500L is good for the soul, the rock ‘n’ roll and whatever else you enjoy listening to. Because you can choose to add Beats Audio, which gives you a sound as big as the car itself. There’s even enough space inside for the music to echo, music to echo. The new Fiat 500L, it’s a catch alright.

Electric Corbythe initiative to implement the infrastructure behind the charge points has been pioneered by community interest company ‘electric corby’ as one of their major projects to attract residents and businesses to the area with corby’s latest cutting edge technology. as well as the electric vehicle project, electric corby is also involved in creating zero-energy bill houses in the new Priors Hall Park

development, which will be equipped with charging points.

also becoming switched on is rockingham motor circuit who is planning to place four charging points around the stadium in a bid to become more competitive with other racetracks. silverstone, home of the British grand Prix, plugged in to the electric

vehicle revolution back in 2011, and rockingham hope their plans will attract more racing enthusiasts with electric cars to events.

it seems then, that the infrastructure has to be in place to encourage people to buy these electric cars. with the latest releases being affordable and practical, the more charge points that are around will encourage a surge of electric vehicle owners and prospective buyers into the town.

DiD yoU KNoW.............................................

.............................................

if you are an electric vehicle owner, or are thinking about buying an electric car, look out for the “charge your car” phone app that will be available to download on smartphones in the near future for you to see where your nearest charge point is.

stretching your imagination and your decision-making capabilities but not your pocket, variety of choice is high on the agenda at ascough’s.

it’s not very often that someone raves about a restaurant but i’ve been literally plagued by gerri and theresa on the reception of corby enterprise centre to go to ascough’s in market Harborough! amid enthusiastic reviews and assurances about it being “my absolute favourite place!” i had high expectations for ascough’s.

at theresa’s insistence, i checked out the menu and was more than a little bit intrigued; goats cheese mousse, Beetroot Pannacotta & Puree, walnut Bread… surely this was going to be expensive? But actually, no. with the lunch menu for 2 courses set at £9.50, or £12.50 for 3 courses, i thought that this seemed more than reasonable on the face of it. now that i have been there, i can say that this is astoundingly good value, because it really is as good as it sounds and possibly a hundred times more hearty.

ascough’s is a fairly small restaurant at the far end of the market Harborough High street and it has an enchanting charm right from the of f. with fairy lights delicately placed around the intimate but modern bistro style restaurant, you can instantly feel very much at ease.

Food to stretchyour imagination

Page 49: Corby Spirit Issue 3

issue 3 | Corby SPirit 49

the restaurant is split over 2 levels, so you don’t get the feeling that it’s packed but there is a tangible lively hustle and bustle in this popular town-based restaurant. the staf f are friendly, the atmosphere relaxed, and the menu is, as theresa told me it would be, “to die for!”

the food can be described as modern British but i think it is far more wide reaching than that. this restaurant gives you the opportunity to stretch your imagination and experience a new and stimulating combination of flavours without stretching your budget. andy kicked things of f with seared scottish scallops with wild mushrooms, toasted brioche and hollandaise. the scallops were so soft and plump, and served with such an unusual accompaniment, we couldn’t help but be impressed. whilst my smoked salmon, arguably a very ‘safe’ choice, was utterly delightful, served with capers, lemon, soda bread and a mustard & dill sauce. For the main course, andy sampled the Free range Pork Loin, truf fle Potato,

carrot tian, chestnut sauce, which was cooked to utter per fection with the tiniest hint of pink to the pork to ensure that it was very tender and very tasty indeed. Determined to refrain from my usual - something with chicken - i went for the confit Duck Leg, champ Potatoes, curly kale, rosemary Jus Lie. the sauce was very rich and the duck was beautifully crispy on the outside whilst being very succulent on the inside. all this was wonderfully presented, to give you the feel of an exclusive restaurant and served with plenty of fresh vegetables and creamy potatoes.

speaking with chef and owner chris ascough, who is an incredibly genuine chap with an absolute passion for food and for of fering variety and value, i was enchanted by the personal approach that he takes towards his customers. the menu is so well thought about, from offering a variety of choice for gluten free and vegetarian, an array of meat, fish and vegetables, all really simply but imaginatively done to try

to lure customers and tantalise their taste-buds. there are no ready made supplies bought into the restaurant and even the ice-cream is home made with a choice of interesting flavours; pineapple cheesecake, raspberry & elder flower and guinness flavour. yes, guinness flavour ice-cream which is so nice, even for the non-ale drinker.

chris has been running ascough’s in market Harborough now for 8 years and has developed a team in the kitchen who have been together for the last 5 years. they work together to create interesting food but with the simple underlying philosophy that they serve really good food that is not over-expensive. the menus change on a monthly basis and tend to follow food that is in season, with meat and veg suppliers literally just up the road.

ascough’s boasts a really low carbon footprint because apart from the fish (in our lovely land-locked county), everything comes from local meat and veg suppliers. they also stock local beer and use a local wine supplier. supporting the ‘little man’ is high on chris’s priorities, so there you go, the food is not only stunningly presented, deliciously put together and tailored to customers’ intolerances, it also has a conscience!

it could be all these factors that contribute to the fact that ascough’s is fully booked at weekends 6 weeks in advance for prime time slots. it seems that when you have sampled the delights of ascough’s once, it’s simply not enough. and with the constantly changing menu, you could never get bored with the choices.

Barbecue derives from ‘barabicu’ found in the language of the natives of the west indies, and it is suggested that both the word and cooking technique migrated out of the caribbean but i think we all know that barbecues mean far more than burgers and sausages… oh yes! summer is nearly upon us and it’s time for the fellas to shine with their long prongs and spotty aprons.

crack open the beer, pour the wine, fill up the paddling pool and don the appropriate factor of sunscreen and let’s go. Let’s not think about last year’s fiasco of rainy days huddled over the BBQ with the golf umbrella, let’s embrace this year with our eternal British optimism and pray that the sun shines, and that you guys will walk into the kitchen and fetch your own ingredients instead of

summoning them from your allotted space next to the blazing inferno you just poured too much lighter fluid into.

a good barbecue is all about simplicity, the following recipes are simple and quick to make. you can also pride yourself in the fact that they are homemade.

Paul Balmer is absolutely passionate about music and has been since he joined his first band as a drummer, aged 10, in Liverpool when his father (already an established musician and band manager) asked him to fill in for a missing band member. so how do you go from a 10-year old drummer to a BaFta nominated writer/director? well, it’s a long story, but an interesting one! From being a merseybeat drummer in the 60s and then a music student in the 70s, to working on BBc’s Pebble mill in Birmingham, Paul worked his way up from BBc sound engineer to radio producer and television director. working at elstree,

manchester and BBc television centre in London, Paul has met lots of interesting people, including the likes of sir David attenborough, sir michael Parkinson and Brian may cBe.

as an independent producer,

with his own company, music on earth Ltd, Paul has become

a highly acclaimed and international award

winning producer/director. with

‘gramoPHone’ ‘DvD of the year’ (2007) for ‘Julian Bream – my Life in music’ and BaFta nomination for his profile

of stephane grappelli, “the

grandfather of jazz violinists”.

Paul has travelled twice around the globe and has worked on projects such as the musical score for the film ‘crocodile Dundee’ and BBc2 production ‘africa i remember’ in africa. He has also presented on radio 4 in Japan and produced podcasts from samarkand as well as presenting on radio 3 from the gambia.

since coming to corby, Paul has returned to his roots in music and has thus far written ten books for Haynes, nine of which have been published, one is at the printers and an eleventh is in progress. the books are far from being car manuals however, and include titles such as ‘Fender stratocaster manual’, ‘telecaster manual’ and ‘gibson Les Paul manual’. the latest book, published in January is called ‘Build your own electric guitar’ and has a forward by legendary guitarist, Brian may. on a visit to Brian may’s house to do an interview, Paul was given a 100 sets of strings and plectrums for his ‘oakley ranger’ students to use. since 2006, Paul has become firmly entrenched into the corby community, becoming the chairman of oakley vale community association, trustee for the oakley vale community centre, consort to the deputy mayor and writing 3 songs dedicated to corby for ‘Deep roots tall

trees’ the corby song cycle. the corby song cycle was put together by Barb Jungr, the jazz musician we have taken to our hearts, and who sang the cycle to a sell-out crowd at the core in november 2012. Paul is also dedicated to passing on his passion for music, not only to his own children, but to the children of corby. every saturday, he runs a youth group from 3.30-5.30pm at the connaughty centre on cottingham road where kids basically just turn up. it’s a free session and open to everyone aged between 11 and 17, the only thing that Paul asks for in return, are sessions for litter picking and tree planting.

the group is called the oakley rangers and Paul guides the youngsters through putting together a band, playing their instruments, encouraging their creativity and putting on performances. it’s very much lead by the kids, with encouragement and mentoring from Paul and his partner cllr Judy caine.

every year, Paul gives an award to the oakley ranger guitarist who makes the most significant progress over the preceding year. the award is his most prized possession – a guitar of great

sentimental value, once owned by his beloved teacher and mentor, Brendan mccormack, founding director of the international guitar Festival of great Britain. Paul also has great plans for the future, to create an education pack hailing the proud heritage of corby and the work done by the steelmen of 1939 who actually helped win the second world war.

the project is about PLuto – Pipeline under the ocean – which saw corby supply the pipeline enabling oil to be pumped over to the D-Day landings, fuelling the incredibly brave soldiers to push on into France and draw an end to the war. Paul is passionate that this is part of corby’s heritage that we should be really proud of and that should be taught in our schools and celebrated. if anyone can pull this together, Paul and Judy caine, also a tv producer, can.

the Fighting Pride of corby

not only is simon Barclay a two time amateur Boxing association of england (aBae) champion

at two different weight divisions, he is also a two time corby sportsperson of the year.

the boxer won his second aBae award in 2012 after a successful season which saw him crowned Heavyweight champion at the aBae championships.

Barclay was delighted at the award when we spoke to him in april. “i felt like i had done a lot to warrant the award. it was a big year for me and to get the recognition of the town was brilliant.”

the 23 year old, from corby aBc gym, has been busy picking himself up from a controversial defeat to south Durham’s Declan Fusco, in the Quarter Finals of the aBae’s in march.

the talented boxer took time out after the fight, and weighed up his options after seeing his British hopes dashed.

it’s not the first time Barclay has found himself on the brink of British selection. “i had a trial in sheffield, but the only reason i didn’t get in was because i had a problem with my back.

“if things don’t turn out in the next few months i’ll have to look at going pro, i know i can make the step up.” He added.

there is no doubt that the next few fights will shape simon’s career, and hopefully Britain will be able to see the fighting pride of corby dazzle in rio de Janeiro.

taking that literally, you really need to seek out medical assistance. Figuratively speaking, here is some help and advice on writing and getting published.

i’m nicky and i’m an author. two and half years ago i was unpublished and dreaming of being a successful writer.

the only problem was that i kept making the same mistakes and losing motivation. to fix the latter i looked around for a writers’ group, but couldn’t find one in my area that would meet in the evenings (essential as most writers, published or not, still need to retain employment). so, i decided to make my own, and creative minds writing was born.

it started small with only a few members, but soon grew into a solid group of writers in just about every imaginable genre, all of whom i’m now proud to call my friends. Having these

people in my life spurred me on. we learnt from one another and motivated each other to keep writing. to be honest, one of the biggest mistakes wannabe writers make is that they don’t actually write anything! Joining a group and catching that excitement from others is crucial to start writing, and to keep you writing.

Before the group i’d talk to my family and friends about my wild ideas and intricate storylines and although supportive, they weren’t writers so their eyes would slowly glaze over. Being able to talk to fellow writers makes all the difference. i got my first real taste of it when, in 2011, i worked on the 48 Hour Book Project with northamptonshire Libraries. there were 12 writers in one room frantically plotting and writing a whole book in just 48 hours. Having like-minded people to bounce ideas off, and chat to, was up-lifting and motivating – i learnt a lot in those 48 hours.

Publisher Call-outsone of the most confusing things about being a writer, is the amount of advice and information there is out there.

everyone has a golden nugget they want to pass along – however, not all of it will apply to you and of course even make sense to your personal ambitions. so i want to make this really easy for you… start looking at publisher call-outs.

Publisher call-outs are just that, publishers seeking specific stories and novels for their stable, or a certain anthology. the trick to them is to thoroughly read through all their requirements and give them what they want. Don’t send them a western thriller if they’ve asked for a Paranormal romance – unless of course you’ve done some serious genre mashing up with a werewolf rustler falling in love with the new vampire sherif f who’s in the middle of solving a serial killer case – hang on, that almost writes itself!

Have you got a book in you?

• Like any good thing in life, writing takes time and effort – there really is no such thing as ‘an overnight sensation’ in this career

• remember to read as much as you write

• Learn the basics of grammar and the english language

• seek out publisher call-outs and give them want they are asking for

• above all – keep motivated!

remember when sending your manuscript to check...

1. you’re sending the right manuscript to the right editor/ contact.

2. you’ve formatted it to exactly the publisher’s guidelines. that includes right spellings and terminology for the right country. and you’re sending it in the right format – rtF, DocX, etc.

3. you’ve included all relevant information about you in your covering email – contact info, previous publishing credits, links to your websites, etc. also anything the publishers have asked for: e.g. summary, one line promotional blurb…

4. the work you’re sending has been checked for any glaring errors and it’s the best work you’ve ever done!

business

enterprise4corby, the free erDF business support programme, delivered and part funded by the university of northampton, has seen a huge surge of interest from individuals and companies in corby looking for support and guidance on how to start, sustain and grow a business.

the project offers 3 strands of support that enables each client to receive the help they need depending on the stage of the business.

two businesses to receive support are Adrenalin Alley and Vacu Activ.

if either of these stories inspire you to start your own buiness or access support for your existing business, enterprise4corby would be happy to hear from you.

you can contact them on 01536 560518 or email [email protected]

alternatively for more information, www.northampton.ac.uk/enterprise4corby has more detail on all of the support available.

Adrenaline Alleyadrenaline alley has been taking part in the Business growth programme. this is designed to help businesses put their expansion plans into action through 1:1 support, a series of workshops and peer to peer support from fellow business owners.

the acclaimed indoor urban sports park will expand thanks to an £85k loan from northamptonshire county council, £72k funding from wren and over 6 acres of land and 3 buildings gifted from BeeBee Developments Ltd.

the facility is being widely recognised for the social and economic benefits it brings to corby and the county as a whole. with a Full time equivalent (Fte) of 22 employees, adrenaline alley has not only created employment and volunteering opportunities within the community, but through its education and learning centre it has increased the chances of individuals’ employability.

it is a place that builds on the olympic legacy, with riders of all ages and abilities participating in positive sporting activities. Participants can ride on BmX, inline skates, skateboards or scooters.

in addition to the core sporting activities adrenaline alley hosts a varied programme of outreach activities such as a new photography learning club for 14-21 years olds, Bikeability (commissioned via ncc), scootability, after school clubs and a weekly training club. Bu

the expansion will open a new performance centre/event arena, a dedicated scooter park and a new reception building, tripling its size.

adrenaline alley has 25 volunteers and over 56,000 members, 55 per cent of whom are aged 13 to 19. it is forecast to receive 67,000 visits this year 60 per cent of those from outside the region and an average of 1,254 new participants each month.

Due to the scale of the expansion adrenaline alley approached enterprise4corby to help develop senior staff skills in readiness for the expansion. the charity has continued to grow at an alarming rate since going indoors on Priors Haw road in 2006. through the Business growth programme they have implemented higher level strategic plans, communicated more efficiently and been able to reflect on their business growth in greater depth.

Founder and Development Director mandy young said “we grasp these coaching and mentoring opportunities with both hands. the guidance and advice we receive is proving invaluable, especially for senior managers. it has given us time to reflect, learn from other business leaders and get the specialist help and advice we need that will contribute to long term sustainability”

Vacu Activenterprise4corby have helped vacu activ through the established Business support strand that provides 1:1 advice and a route to market programme covering business strategy, finance and sales & marketing to sustain and build foundations for long term success.

vacu activ are a start up business and were keen to access as much support as possible. Here they tell the story of how they started and the impact of the support they received:

my friend and i became exhausted from trying a range of popular diets and never losing weight, or when we did it just coming right back again. we started going to the gym, and after a while we realised that we had to put in a lot of effort to be able to get rid of the weight. a large effort for a small gain….

after some research we heard about some new equipment, but found out these high tech exercise machines were nowhere to be found in the area. this was the perfect excuse (and reason) for us setting up our Health and Beauty studio vacu activ on elizabeth street, corby.

our high tech machines are developed in europe and are like no other fitness equipment you have seen. By using the innovative products, people can lose up to a stone after ten sessions (whilst living a healthy lifestyle). exercising on our equipment can burn up to 5000 calories in a 30-minute session, helping to get rid of cellulite, relax and recharge. included within the fitness benefits of using our equipment there are also spa-like elements such as;

aromatherapy, colortherapy and air ionization. For instance our treadmills are fitted with specialist lamps to keep your skin in its best condition.

we started our business in august 2012 and we met Jay taylor from enterprise 4 corby in november as they were recomended from a friend. when we met Jay for the first time we were so happy that the service he could offer was free of charge. Like any other business most of our initial funds went into the purchasing of our equipment as well as the refurbishment of our studio. Jay and enterprise 4 corby has been helpful in every area of our business. Jay has provided support and advice on pricing, finance, marketing and much more. it’s really helpful to have someone to talk through ideas to make my business grow. enterprise 4 corby have supported me to open our studio to the public in corby in January 2013, but is the support from Jay over? no! the studio has been open for 3 months and Jay continues to help us solve emerging problems. His support is invaluable to us, because without

his help, we may not have been able to achieve success. now, we can help the people of corby by solving the problem of obesity, being over weight and/or leading a healthy lifestyle.

unemployment rates in corby have risen recently, especially for the youth and older age groups who are constantly facing the tough task of getting into, or back into the world of full time work.

with bills to pay and mouths to feed, it’s easy to fall into the trap of forgetting about your career and concentrating on getting a job… any job. so how do you deal with the desperation that drags at your heels?

we spoke to Pearson Hardgreaves, a new career consultancy business, about the opportunities they provide to remove the desperation of job hunting and give you the chance to become more employable than ever before. managing partner of Pearson Hardgreaves, ashley Hodson, spoke to us about their new scheme, which sets out to help promote job seekers’ skills and help clients fulfil their own career ambitions.

the company prides itself on being as exclusive as they come; working collaboratively with the candidate offering the chance to amend cvs, assist with application forms and provide interview coaching, as well as many more services.

How did you come up with the idea? i was asked by friends, family and then friends of friends and family if we could tweak or look over their cvs or applications. they were asking why they weren’t getting any offers and more often than not the person’s cv just wasn’t drawing attention to the right areas.

Who do you help?our clients’ age has spanned from 16 year old school leavers, redundancies in the middle ages and previous retirees who have had a change of heart or circumstances seeing them look to get back into work.

desperately seeking employment

What is the key to your success? we know that those who have been made redundant don’t think: “where will i work next or how much will i be earning?” they worry more about how their mortgage gets paid and whether they’ve got enough savings. our partnership with six Financial services allows our clients access to specialist financial advice. that’s where our success comes from; the ability to accommodate our clients’ needs. we’ve got their best interests at heart.

Why do people use you?our clients use us for a number of reasons; we don’t work for any employers so they know that what we are doing is right for them. we are discreet and highly specialist in what we do, we are a professional firm providing specialist services.

we had a gentleman contact us recently out of frustration, as the recruitment company he was working with put his cv forward for a position within the same group he was already employed by! this led to an understandably awkward conversation with his manager. He used us because he needed the security of knowing that we only work for the candidate side of the job equation, needless to say he no longer works there.

Where do you see your company in five years?i want us to be in a position to offer our services free of charge to those who cannot afford it. i also want people to think of us first and call us first before they make any moves, it’s easier to help from the start than it is to come in and do damage limitation.

the development of Pearson Hardgreaves shows that there is definitely a call for the service between clients and their next career move, especially for those who have never had to do it before or are looking to get back into work after being made redundant.

Ashley Hodson’s top tips

think about the language you use in your cv or application. using words like “exceeded” or “surpassed” instead of “hit”, shows that have done much more than just achieve what you set out to do.

always know where you are trying to go and what it will take to get there. there is no point knowing where you want to be, applying for that position and then realising that everyone else has a certain qualification or certain experience that you do not.

the economy is only as bad as you let the press lead you to believe. there are plenty of jobs out there, but make sure you get your sales pitch right from the off.

Don’t be afraid of rejection. stay positive. if you are unsuccessful, ask for feedback so that you are prepared for your next interview.

Plan, plan, plan.

we’ve been talking to Liliana Harberd of ‘watch my chops’ to find out what it takes to create a happy, obedient canine and Liliana is 100% convinced that every dog can be trained, and most owners too! Liliana believes that the best way to train a dog is through positive reinforcement, rewarding the behaviour that you want to promote, so that the animal learns by association. a completely force-free method of training that builds a good relationship between the owner and the dog. sound like a match made in heaven? Here’s how…

classes are designed to enhance the bond between dog and owner, and as with all strong relationships, this begins with building trust. introducing a ‘clicker’, the owner makes

a promise, that all good behaviour will be rewarded with a treat. First of all, you establish that the click means a treat, which will be whatever motivates the individual dog, be it chicken, cheese, liver, etc or, for the non-foodie dog, a ball game or toy. click, treat, simple; the promise has been established. every time your dog exerts the kind of behaviour that you want from him, you click your clicker and the dog gets a treat to reinforce this good behaviour. i think even i would respond to this…!

at no point do you need to push and shove the dog, this is a big no-no. Just keep reinforcing to the dog that good behaviour will be rewarded with a click and a treat. From

Happy Dogs & Trained Owners

a dog is often referred to as ‘man’s best friend’ but this is not always the case… you may love your mutt but does he drive you crazy?

here you will be able to introduce hand signals and verbal cues – a top tip at this point from Liliana is; don’t talk too much. only give a cue once, stay calm and be ready to praise. there is no point shouting at a dog, they are sensitive creatures (although i used to know a Labrador who i’m sure didn’t even have a pulse, let alone a sensitive bone in his body), and can react badly to stressed-out, moody owners.

i asked Liliana who her most dif ficult client has been and she stated categorically that her own lazy Basset Hound was probably her worst. He was not impossible to train, just dreadfully slow, and with time and patience, even he could be persuaded to tow the line.

with the emphasis on fun rather than competition tD rally is all about you and your dog. aiming to lose as few points as they can, teams perform user-friendly obedience-style exercises (stations) set out in a numbered course.

tD rally welcomes handlers of all ages and abilities, and dogs both mongrel and pedigree. uniquely, tD rally encourages teams to compete against their own previous scores rather than against each other. talking Dogs rally is never dull and with handlers from the age of 5 to 80, it’s a very sociable sport with competitions running up and down the country.

if the sun ever does decide to come out this year, vetsavers in corby have given us some top tips on how to deal with and prevent sunburn in our pets.

sunburn is a common summer problem for pets. Pink skinned animals will burn very easily and the most at risk areas are places where the coat is thin, for example the ears and nose. you can apply sunblock to these areas, it is best to use products designed for children or sensitive skin, and you should always test the cream on a small area first and leave it for 24 hours to ensure your animal is not going to react to it.

try to ensure shaded areas are available if you know your pet is going to be outside for a prolonged period in the sun and plan log walks in wooded areas rather than open fields.

sunburn is painful when it happens, you might see blisters or scabs along the edges of the ears, but it can also result in serious long-term consequences: skin cancers can result when tissue is damaged, especially the chronic damage caused by repeated burning. if your pet does get burnt you should visit your vets so that the area/s can be pro-actively monitored going forward.

never put you pet in a bath of cold or ice water, instead offer a water soaked towel or space to enjoy a cool draft that will sooth and lower the temperate of burnt skin.

we hope these tips will help you and your pet enjoy the summer sun and as always for more help and advice please call or make an appointment to see us at vetsavers corby.

Protect your pet from sunburn
