Read the text about the vegetarian diet and answer the questions below briefly (1-10 words).

The Vegetarian Diet is Gaining Popularity, but is it Safe?

Many people these days are becoming interested in vegetarian diets for health and ethical reasons.

There’s a lot of evidence that a vegetarian diet will prevent or cut your risk of getting a whole host

of diseases. And we’re always being told to eat more vegetables and grains, so why not go all the

way? This diet can help people lose weight and is often less expensive than a meat-based diet.

Many people who don’t know a lot about the vegetarian diet worry when their loved ones go

vegetarian because they fear it’s not possible to get good protein without meat. That isn’t true;

beans, rice, tofu and other grains provide plenty of protein if the diet is well-planned. This is really

the problem with a lot of vegetarians, who are often called “junk food vegetarians”. They go veggie

but haven’t really studied or planned what to eat instead of meat so they end up eating a lot of

processed foods, maybe a lot of dairy and other things that aren’t very healthful. These are the

vegetarians who will get sick, gain weight and usually give up on being a vegetarian because there “isn’t enough to eat”.

People who do a little planning and experimenting before going completely veggie will find there is

plenty to eat and will ultimately end up with diets having more variety than their counterparts who

eat all kinds of foods. The only nutrient required by the human body that is not provided by a

vegetarian diet is B12, and that’s only a problem for vegans, who use no animal products of any

kind. Lacto-ovo vegetarians, who eat eggs and dairy products, don’t have this worry because B12 is

found in dairy products, as well as eggs and meat.

Other health risks that have been publicized include an argument that the body was made to digest

meat and going for a long time without eating meat could cause bacteria in the digestive system to

become less active, which, theoretically, could make it easier for vegetarians to get sick. But this

theory simply doesn't seem to hold when you consider that the vast majority of vegetarians are

healthier and live longer than meat eaters. Just because our bodies have evolved to eat meat does not mean it is necessary for health.

If you're worried that you might have a vitamin or nutrient deficiency, consult a doctor for blood

tests and alter your diet with whole foods first rather than resorting to supplements. The body can

more readily use nutrients that come from foods directly rather than in a pill. Visiting a nutritionist

may also be helpful if you don't know what to eat to improve your health as a vegetarian.

II. Read the text about the Viennese Christmas Market. Write in the boxes

on the answer sheet the letter of the most suitable sentence (A-F) that

fits into the gap. There is an extra sentence, which you do not need.

There is an example (0) for you.

(5x1) 5p

A Short History of the Viennese Christmas Market

(0) _The first Christmas markets were held in Vienna more than seven centuries ago_. They still

hold a unique appeal for locals and visitors to this day. From the very outset these markets have

been shaped by the stallholders who work there.

(1)____ In the sixteenth century the Thomasmarkt – the precursor of today’s Christkindlmarkt –

took place around Christmas and New Year's Eve. Beside standard goods such as textiles and

groceries, the Thomasmarkt sold delicious gingerbreads and pastries which were all the rage at the

time.

Around 200 years later the market’s name had changed to the Nikolo- und Weihnachtsmarkt or

Krippenmarkt (crib market), and it was again given over to traders and retailers.

(2)____ After all, these were the people who ensured a steady supply of goods for the city’s

burghers, even in the most difficult times. The city first celebrated Christmas as we would now

recognize it in the Biedermeier period during the first half of the nineteenth century). The

celebration was first taken up by the Viennese aristocracy. (3)____

But it was not until around 1814 and the time of the Vienna Congress that the custom of giving

Christmas presents took hold. At this point the market had moved to Am Hof in the first district,

and we know from contemporary invoices that it sold special Christmas goods (angels, ribbons,

candles, etc.) alongside the standard market fare.

The market finally settled at its current location on Vienna Rathausplatz in 1975. The annual Magic

of Advent in Vienna, as the event is now known, has lost none of its charm and attracts more and

more visitors each year. (4)____ Each year more than three million visitors come to the market,

including 500,000 from abroad.

The stallholders and traders provide a direct link to the market’s humble beginnings, and ensure that

it has lost nothing of its charm and beauty. Year in year out, the Magic of Advent in Vienna

conquers children’s hearts. (5)____

http://www.christkindlmarkt.at/History.18.0.html?&L=1 2094n

0. The first Christmas markets were held in Vienna more than seven centuries ago.

A They put up Christmas trees in their city palaces, in line with the northern German tradition.

B The tin soldiers of yore have given way to newer toys but one thing never changes: the little

ones’ joyful faces!

C In 1296, Emperor Albrecht I granted Viennese traders and shopkeepers the privilege of holding

a December Market for the city’s population.

D Christmas traditions originate in the pagan celebration of the Festival of Lights during the winter

solstice.

E From its inception this market has been the exclusive preserve of small traders.

F This spellbinding winter wonderland has made the transition from an exclusively Viennese event

to a truly international affair with some 145 stalls.

Read the text about a foundation which protects whales and finish the sentences by choosing the

best one of the given alternatives. (a / b / c)

The PWF Difference

Pacific Whale Foundation’s (PWF) vision is to be the people’s environmental organization for

research, and protection of the world’s whales, dolphins and their ocean habitat. Pacific Whale

Foundation is also a world leader in marine ecotourism. Since 1980, we've carried more than 3.5

million guests on our ocean ecotours. But Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventures is not your

ordinary cruise company.

When you buy a ticket on an eco-adventure cruise, you know your money is supporting Pacific

Whale Foundation's work to protect our oceans through science and advocacy. Since 1980, we've

raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support marine research, education and conservation

programs on behalf of the ocean.

Pacific Whale Foundation is recognized today for our decades of marine research, including studies

of coral reefs, wild dolphins, toothed whales and humpback whales. When you cruise with us, you'll

get the latest facts and findings about marine life. We gather data about the wildlife we encounter

on all of our trips. On some of our cruises, we have a researcher on board, gathering additional data

for our studies.

We have invested in the most modern and environmentally-sound catamarans on Maui. Our vessels

feature SmoothCat technology for an ultra-comfortable ride and run on energy-efficient, low-

emissions engines. Pacific Whale Foundation developed and outfitted all of our vessels with whale

protection devices, the first devices in the world for commercial vessels that guide whales away

from propellers and running gear.

Every Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventure cruise is led by a team of Certified Marine

Naturalists, all of whom hold graduate or undergraduate degrees in marine biology, ecology or

related sciences. In addition, our staff must complete our rigorous certification program, which

includes testing their knowledge about Hawaii's marine environment, local geography and culture,

their presentation skills and Red Cross CPR, First Aid and Lifesaving Certifications.

Pacific Whale Foundation is recognized worldwide as an ecotourism leader. Whether it be using

bio-compostable plates, cups and utensils; sourcing locally grown fruits, vegetables and meats for

our trips to reduce our carbon footprint, or leading the charge by establishing a strict wildlife

watching code, it is our mission to be advocates for marine life, the ocean, and the planet.

If you've never been on a boat, or used a snorkel, don’t worry. Our team will provide the

equipment, instruction, support and encouragement to help you feel 100% comfortable with the

ocean. For kids, we offer a FREE Junior Naturalist Program on our cruises.

We also offer our guests multiple (free) options for flotation devices, and our crew offers a brief

'snorkel 101 class' for those who want a refresher or an introduction to snorkeling.

You have a total time of 150 minutes to write the two letters/emails and to complete the

reading comprehension test. You can use your printed dictionary.

Task 1.

Write a letter/e-mail of 140-160 words. Include each of the three points given.

Do NOT use your own name in your letter/e-mail.

You have received a letter (e-mail) from your teenage friend (Susy/Dave) in which you read the

following:

I want to share something and I need your advice. Last week I had a quarrel with my

parents. My dad was offered a really well-paid job at a company 150 km from our place.

Mom and dad want to move there next month. Better life, bigger flat, more money would be

OK, but I have all my roots, my friends here! What shall I do?

Write a letter (e-mail) to your friend in which you outline your opinion about the issue.

Write about:

Do you agree with the idea of moving? Why?

What would you do if you were Susy/Dave?

If the family decides to move, how can Susy/Dave keep in touch with their friends?

Task 2.

Write a letter/e-mail of 100-120 words. Include each of the three points given.

Do NOT use your own name in your letter/e-mail.

You have read the following in the local newspaper.

How well children do at primary school is critical to how well they perform later on. The

best possible teachers with the best possible degrees are needed in primary schools. Great

teachers have a passion for what they do. Primary teaching is a chance to motivate hundreds

of pupils every day, and help shape their future.

Write a reader’s letter to the editor of the newspaper (Mr Brown) in which you outline your opinion

about the issue.

Write about the following:

Do you agree with the message of the text? Why?

What was your own (or a friend’s) experience with primary school teachers?

What do you think a good teacher is like?

SAMPLE SOLUTION

1.

Dear Dave,

Yes, this is a difficult situation. I understand you, but surely, you can see the advantages of a better

job for you dad, too. So this is quite a hard choice you will have to make… But I think you should

go. You’re too young to live on your own.

If I were you I would enjoy all the positive things about moving: having a bigger flat, more

possibilities for going out and making new friends. It would be like a big adventure!

Besides, you wouldn’t lose your old friends, either. We could stay in touch through the Internet.

You could come and visit us as often as you like. Or, even more exciting for me, we could go and

visit you, too! I would really like to see the big city!

But, of course, you will have to decide for yourself. It may help you to know that I will always be a

friend you can count on.

Bye for now,

Peter

2.

Dear Mr Brown,

I have read your editorial and I partly agree with you. A good teacher can change a person’s whole

life, but this depends not on degrees.

I was a naughty boy in first and second grade, and our teacher didn’t like me. I was always trying to

be funny, but I just always got into bigger trouble. In third grade our new teacher listened to my

silly ideas, like catching frogs for science class. She listened with a smile, and told me to do these

things after school and show her later. And that was all I needed.

A good teacher pays attention to students and shows them that they are important. A good teacher

needs to be a good person.

Yours faithfully,

Jonathan White

Translate the text below into Hungarian.

You have 50 minutes to complete this task.

The use of a printed dictionary is allowed.

Why are so many men secret dieters?

When you're trying to diet in secret in a busy office, says Dave Briscoe, a researcher from Surrey,

the trick is to accept each treat that is offered – but only one chocolate, and the smallest piece of

cake. Accept less, and you'll be suspect. Accept more, and your plan is ruined. "That was the rule I

kept to," he says, "to avoid people asking awkward questions."

Briscoe (not his real name) isn't the only man who has dieted in secret. A survey of more than 600

men found 90% wanted to lose weight, but almost one in three wouldn't tell anyone about their diet

plans – even friends and family. It seems that shame still exists around weight and a good

proportion of people at any one time are likely to be dieting secretly. But this issue seems to affect

men and women in different ways.

Phil Mundy, a food and diet writer says many men are unwilling to say they are on a diet because it

involves admitting they have a problem in the first place. This isn't helped by the fact that "the term

“diet”, for decades, has been associated with women", and for men of a certain age it's therefore

considered depriving him of strength or vigor.

There are mixed outlooks on whether it is healthier to be open; support from family and friends can,

of course, be helpful, but confessing your diet to anyone who might respond with jokes on this issue

could prompt a sorry descent into comfort eating, says Mundy. When it comes to this subject, we

probably all just need to grow up, so it can be discussed honestly and clearly. It's not an uncommon

- Én is ehhez a szabályhoz tartottam

Úgy tűnik, a túlsúlyt

Ezzel a témával kapcsolatban

valószínűleg mindannyiunknak felnőttesebben kéne viselkednünk, hogy őszintén és világosan

lehessen erről beszélni. Nem ritka ez a probléma – nem kellene tabuként kezelni.
