Next Meeting - Annual General Meeting 12 th December

Time is running out to complete a nomination form for the 2018 Committee. But have no fear, there's still time. You have until the opening of the meeting to submit your nomination.

If there is one meeting that we should all endeavour to attend, it's this one. And if that's notenough to make you go, perhaps the offfer of wine and mince pies might just help!

CATS Annual Dinner – Tuesday 9 th January 2018

Please note that January's meeting is being held on a Tuesday. There is no meeting on Monday 8 th January .

Reservations have now been taken for the 2018 Annual CATS Dinner at Le Chateau, Coombe Lane Croydon. Those members and guests will be contacted shortly to confirm the menu etc.The cost will be the same as last year, £21.00, and although there is an extracharge of £2.50 for tea or coffee, club funds will provide that free of charge (excluding the cash difference of any specialist coffees)

In 2017, the restaurant opened specially on a Monday because they had our booking plus another significant booking. The restaurant is usually closed on Mondays. Unfortuanately for us it was not financially viable for them to open on a Monday this time round.

Please forward your booking to Stuart G6CJR who is co-ordinating our club booking.

Meeting Debrief – Monday 13 th November – CATS Quiz

CATS put out invitations to our neighbouring clubs and both Sutton & Cheam and Surrey Radio Contact Club took up the challenge. SRCC made up one team, Sutton & Cheam fielded two teams and CATS also fielded their two teams.

Terry G4CDY was the quiz master while his wife Kath was busy in the kitchen preparing hot sausage rolls for half time. CATS provided wine, beer and lemonade to the teams.

Terry made up questions for 6 rounds, including one which was to identify US states and their respective capitals. The other rounds were Easy Europe, Amateur Radio, Technology,Terribly Techie and Easy UK

There were some tough questions in the mix which certainly worked the quizzer's brains! At one point, the “CATS No Hopers” of whom I was a team member were trailing last. But, we chose to use our 3dB gain (joker) on the technical round which boosted us to 2nd overall.

At half time, we all had a break and enjoyed the prepared hot sausage rolls before we all headed back to our tables for the second half.

Our thanks go to Terry G4CDY for being our quiz master and devising a great range of questions. But also, huge thanks to Terry's wife Kath for her sterling working in the kitchen.

I guess the next round will be hosted by the winning team.... We look forward to the rematch!!

The 1 Ohm Cubed Question by Tom G4DFA

Judging by the groans at the quiz when Terry asked the1 ohm cube question to might be worth adding this to the news sheet, I found it on line....

Traditional of Solving the Resistor Cube ProblemThis is the cube structure consisting of 12 resistors electrically connected between the 8 vertices. Each resistor is 1 Ω, but any value can be used so long as they are all the same.

Here is where the intuition comes into play. Colour coding is used to help keep track of the resistors and associated nodes (below). Due to symmetry, the potential (voltage) at the three nodes labelled "α" are equal. Since no current flows between nodes with a potential difference of 0 V, they can be shorted together without affecting the circuit's integrity. The same can be done for the nodes labelled "β."

Once you short those nodes, you obtain the equivalent circuit shown below. As you can see, there are two sets of three resistors in parallel, in series with one set of six resistors inparallel. So, you have 1/3 Ω in series with 1/6 Ω in series with 1/3 Ω, which equals 5/6 Ω.

Page 6: COULSDON AMATEUR TRANSMITTING SOCIETY M1FUR Whispers... · S&CRS “Fog” CATS “No Hopers” CATS “MIX” Pt1 CATS “MIX” Pt2 There were some tough questions in the mix which

RF Cafe Method of Solving the Resistor Cube ProblemNow I will present my method of solving the resistor cube problem. The structure is repeated again here.

Kirchhoff's current law, which states that the sum of the currents entering and exiting a node is zero, is essential in the analysis.

The first step is to recognize that at a node where equal resistances exist, current entering the node will be distributed equally between the number of output branches - in this case three. For convenience sake, I assigned an input current of 3 amperes at the corner labelled "A," so that 1 amp will flow through each output branch. Note that 1 A flows through each branch.

On the far side of each of those branches is another node with two output branches. Again, due to symmetry, the input current will divide evenly so that ½ A flow into each branch. Looking at the cube's output node labelled "B," it is apparent that the same situation exists as with "A."

Take a moment to sum the currents into and out of each node to verify that they all add up as required.

Page 7: COULSDON AMATEUR TRANSMITTING SOCIETY M1FUR Whispers... · S&CRS “Fog” CATS “No Hopers” CATS “MIX” Pt1 CATS “MIX” Pt2 There were some tough questions in the mix which

Now that you know the current through each branch, and you know that each branch has asingle 1 Ω resistor in it, Ohms law allows you to calculate the voltage across each resistor.

The next step is to sum the voltage from input node "A" to output node "B." Any path you take travels along three edges, and all total to 2½ volts.

Finally, apply Ohms law, which says that the resistance is equal to the voltage divided by the current. As with the other analysis method, the resulting equivalent resistance is 5/6 Ω.

You can see that in reality, being able to make the assumptions in the traditional solution requires an understanding of the current division principles in my method. So, IMHO it is simpler to add voltages and then plug voltage and current into Ohm's law to arrive at the answer than to risk shorting nodes incorrectly. It's so simple, a caveman could do it.

Thanks Tom for researching that taxing quiz question!!

CATS 40 th Radio & Electronics Bazaar – Sunday 19 th November 2016 - Full Report

We once again returned back to our 2016 venue, The Oasis Academy Coulsdon in Homefield Road, Old Coulsdon which was so well received by our traders and public last year. We rebooked the Agora, which is effectively the school reception and assembly hall plus the adjacent canteen.

The Academy were kind enough to allow us some setting up time on the Saturday morning, which was a huge bonus. Stuart G6CJR and Denis M0NDJ had loaded up Denis's trailer with tables that we had been kindly loaned to us by the Banstead Scouts. Toassist, Adam G7CRQ, Glen G4FVL and Andy G0KZT were on hand to help unload at the other end.

On Sunday morning, I arrived at 8.00am to discover that some of the traders were already waiting to get in! Due to the head start we had the previous morning, that only left us the remainder of the tables to set out which were effectively stripped from the adjacent classrooms! By about 8.20am we were able to allow the traders to start setting out.

David G6VMI kindly took charge of the car parking and marshalling of the cars and wasassisted by Glen G4FVL, John G1RUV and Adam G7CRQ.

Meanwhile, Jim G4WYJ, his wife Barbara, Prue G4RWW, Janice (Stuart's wife) and Wendy, (Steve G7SYO's wife) organised thecanteen. Stuart and I were sorting out the traders and getting them assigned to their respective tables. The CATS Bring & Buy was organised by Andy G8JAC and assisted by Vince G1HRD and Peter M0PWW. Manning the entrance door was Len G0GNQ, Ed G0JOS along with is friendRoy G6DKS. Steve G7SYO provided us with an effective Public Address system andacted as our MC making announcements throughout the event.

At 10.00am the doors were opened and the assembled crowd filed in. For their £1.50 entrance fee, they were rewarded with the usual tea/coffee voucher but in addition, a free raffle ticket to win a TYT DMR handheldtransceiver. Additional raffle tickets were sold at the Bring & Buy stand. It is estimatedthat this year we had just over 200 through the door, the highest recorded figure for us.

One of the highlights was our 40th CATS Bazaar raffle. This was drawn shortly after 12.00pm. We approached the RSGB stand and asked them if they would be kind enough to officiate in selecting the lucky winner.

Mike Senior G4EFO, our RSGB Region 10 Manager stepped up to the job. The lucky winner was Jo 2E0JOZ. Many congratulations to Jo and we look forward to hearing her on DMR very soon.

So, with over 200 people through the doors, the canteen doing a roaring trade and cash generated via the Bring & Buy, plus the traders who brought a table (or two), we managedto make a significant profit for club funds.

I'd like to thank Stuart for being my co-organiser and for meeting numerous times to plan the event. I lost count of the hours we both spent on the project. But it was a team effort on the day and thanks go to all the members who gave up their Sunday to make it happen.

We are looking at booking the Academy again for the 2018 event. We have listened to thetraders and as a result we are looking at an option to hire the academy from 07.00am to allow more time for the traders to get set up. We also have plans to invite a selection of smaller dealers as another feature of The Bazaar. The provisional date is Sunday 18 th November 2018 and will be confirmed as soon as it is known.

I am trying to collate the results of the contesting efforts of our club members who have taken part in this year's series of contests. I hope to publish these results in the January edition of “CATS Whispers”.

Meanwhile, here are the proposed dates for 2018. Do members want to field a team and set up under field conditions, perhaps some of the longer contests? G0KZT is happy to collate club member's interest.

So that's it!

I have now reached the end of my very last newsletter. But before I hand the reins over to David G6VMI, I would like to thank all of those contributors who have sent in articles and photographs which as well as saving me from having to write stuff, but also enriches the newsletter and makes it something attractive to read. I have been unable to attend as many meetings this year as I would have liked, some which is down to work commitments but also family things too, My daughters both have a full program of activities that I want tosupport, and one has to prioritise the amount of time available. But this has led to empty spaces where I had insufficient material to debrief the topics of those meetings.

I wish every success to David and look forward to seeing his revamped 2018 “CATS Whispers”.
