Knowledge:
K1. Understand the Physical Education (PE) teacher socialisation process.
K2. Understand the discourses which have shaped PE in the past and present and from thisknowledge, predict the future.
K3. Demonstrate understanding of contemporary curriculum policies and guidelines relevant toteaching students in the middle and senior years.
K4. Define and compare student-centred and teacher-centred approaches.
K5. Review research literature to develop a deep understanding of a range of PE teaching approaches,including the theoretical foundations that underpin these approaches.

Application of knowledge and skills:
A1. Research and present a critical analysis of an issue which commonly impacts on teaching andlearning in PE.
A2. Present research findings to peers and conduct a collaborative discussion about the issuesdrawing out and critically examining personal attitudes.
A3. Design a non-traditional lesson plan making links to current theoretical understandings.A4. Teach a lesson to peers and critically evaluate practice.
Course Content:
Exploration of the role of PE and PE teachers – past, present and future.Analysis of personal teaching disposition, philosophy and values, and the impact of the teachersocialisation process on PE teacher education students.Exploration and self reflection of characteristics of an effective PE teacher.Physical education pedagogical models – Mosston’s Spectrum of teaching styles and Metzler’sinstructional models – meeting individual learning styles and needs.Contemporary student-centred PE teaching approaches.Working with contemporary curriculum documents.PE unit and lesson planning to meet learning objectives.Effective teaching and class management strategies to maximise safe and inclusive participation inPE.
