wHY Uts? convenient locations Located in Sydney’s creative industries precinct, our urban City campus is within easy walking distance to Central Station and the Sydney CBD, as well as the cosmopolitan inner city suburbs of Glebe, Surry Hills and Darling Harbour. You’re surrounded by places to shop, eat and just hang out.

Twenty minutes north of the city, our Kuring-gai campus at Lindfield offers business, nursing, health and education degrees. The campus is easily accessible by public transport, but there’s also limited parking on campus and a shuttle bus service that runs between the Lindfield and City campuses. From 2016, all Kuring-gai courses will be transferred to the UTS City campus.

“My project was for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) as part of my Marketing Communications major. The RIDBC briefed us on some challenges they were facing, such as how to best leverage their call centre to acquire new donors. After conducting our own research, we developed and submitted a report to our tutors outlining our interpretations and recommendations for how the RIDBC could resolve their issues. The best group reports were then chosen to present their marketing strategies to the RIDBC marketing team.

a typical career for someone with my qualifications would be to work as a journalist for newspapers, television, radio or online media. There are also opportunities in marketing, advertising and PR. A family friend once told me that for every word you read, someone’s been paid to write it.

in my role as the Australian Parliament House reporter for the Triple J Hack program, I file national daily current affairs radio stories and do live crosses with Triple J and ABC broadcasts. I also write for the Triple J website and provide content for other ABC programs.

One of the best things about my job is that I never know what I’ll be doing from day to day. Each morning we have our editorial meeting, where I receive my brief. My day is spent speaking with politicians, attending press conferences and conducting interviews. Working in journalism is such a privilege. You have the right to phone up and ask to speak to anyone – such as Obama’s right hand man or even the Prime Minister.

My advice for students is to do as many internships as you can. Give everything a go. It doesn’t matter how boring a topic appears: there’s always a story.

overseas stUdY toUrs Uts architecture students have the opportunity to take part in an overseas study tour. funded in part by the school of architecture, the tour takes students to the Us for two weeks to experience a number of historic and iconic buildings in both los angeles and chicago. students also participate in studio sessions at california polytechnic with local architecture students, as well as spending a day visiting the office of Gehry partners.

The tour helped me to identify architectural ideas and principles in a retrospective way. a typical career path for someone with my qualification involves a wide range of possibilities. The Visual Communication degree teaches you to think conceptually and to effectively communicate design ideas to clients. If you have an open mind, you can create whatever you want. Combining design with international studies gives you the potential to work all around the world.

in my role as 2D Designer for the Studio Tord Boontje, London, I work on a number of design projects. One day I may be conceptualising a physical experience for an art installation, designing an event or hand drawing illustrations. The best part of my job is the versatility, I am able to work on design concepts, prints, branding, textiles, events and illustrations. No two days are ever the same.

My advice to students considering a career in design would be to respond to your intuition and follow your passion. My prior experience in design has been of great benefit to the work I do in my current position. After I graduated from uni I began working on a number of freelance jobs and last year I worked as a graphic designer for Marcel Wanders, a renowned product and interior designer based in Amsterdam. These experiences have given me the drive to bring my own personality and imagination into the world.

teacH overseas as part of YoUr deGree Uts provides primary education students with a unique opportunity to travel overseas and gain practical experience teaching in different cultures. this two-week practicum allows students to engage with a different curriculum, often teaching students who may not speak fluent english. to date, trips have been organised to thailand, samoa and china.

“I’ve always wanted to travel the Pacific Islands, so the Samoa practicum was one of the main reasons I applied to UTS. I also wanted to go because the school placement would be organised for me. I find it hard to go out of my comfort zone, so I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to have an exciting and rewarding experience.

a typical career path for someone with my qualifications would be to work as a teacher; however there are a number of options in education. You could lecture, work for an education body or an excursion organisation. After further study or experience, you could work in senior executive positions such as Head of Department, Deputy Principal or Principal.

in my role as a Year One classroom teacher; I’m always very busy, but the experience of being involved in the education of young people is extremely rewarding. I am constantly making sure the learning activities are suitable for the vast range of students in the classroom by preparing differentiated learning experiences. Aside from teaching in the classroom, I work with specialist staff and speech and occupational therapists. I’m also regularly collaborating and sharing ideas with colleagues and having discussions with parents.

My advice to anyone thinking of studying education is to follow your passion. If you’re passionate about teaching, go for it. It’s such an inspiring and rewarding career. You gain experience in the industry by tutoring, working as a teacher’s aid or by working in before and after school care.

BUilt-in internsHips Uts Bachelor of engineering students complete a diploma in engineering practice as part of their degree. this means students undertake two six-month paid internships with companies of their choice as part of their five year degree. these placements, which Uts can assist with finding, help students decide which areas they want to specialise in. it also gives them the opportunity to develop a professional network before they graduate.

“Although students usually complete their placements with two different organisations, I chose to complete both of mine at H.I. Fraser Group, specialist engineering in the niche gas, fluid and waste sector. My first placement was with the Repair and Overhaul department, where I worked as a junior project engineer assisting in project management of maintenance projects for the Royal Australian Navy. For my second placement I spent some time working with the Engineering Consulting department, conducting detailed engineering assessments of fluid distribution systems.

“My internships gave me the opportunity to get my hands dirty with some exciting engineering work on board many of the Navy’s warships stationed in the Sydney area. I gained real-world experience in the engineering industry and developed teamwork and leadership skills.

a typical career path for civil engineers – I’m not sure there is one, though many would say it’s working for a big construction company. There’s actually incredible versatility when it comes to applications in the workplace. Engineers are detail driven, analytical, methodical and innovative. As a result, engineering graduates are always in great demand.

in my role as the founder, owner and managing director of Construction Assignments, orchestrating successful project outcomes is my job. I have no typical days, and this is one of the reasons I love my job so much. I can be interstate on business, chairing project meetings, conducting site inspections, writing project design briefs or meeting stakeholders to understand their needs.

My advice to someone considering studying civil engineering is to look forward to a rewarding and stimulating career. My degree challenged me on all levels and thoroughly prepared me for the workforce. I have the opportunity to apply my skills as an engineer and be in charge of large-scale construction sites. If you want a career with a great sense of achievement and a satisfying pay packet then engineering does it all.

nUrsinG clinical placeMents one of the distinct benefits of the Bachelor of nursing degree is the extensive work placement opportunities for students use their university training in real life clinical settings. in total, Uts nursing students complete 820 hours of clinical placement as part of their degree.

“Our clinical placements start in the first semester of our first year so it’s a fantastic way to put into practice the theory you’ve learnt right from the start. Within the faculty we have a clinical placement unit, whose sole purpose is to assign us to placements. Students are assigned a range of placements, even specialty placements such as mental health or paediatrics.

“So far in my degree I’ve been to many different hospitals such as Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPA), Westmead Hospital, Cumberland Hospital, Liverpool Hospital, and Royal North Shore Hospital. I’ve worked in mental health, paediatrics, geriatrics, medical surgical – and have never been on the same ward twice. I loved my most recent placement in the RPA Transplant Unit. It was challenging, both from a nursing and ethical perspective. It also sparked my interest in becoming more knowledgeable in specific areas of nursing – for example, the transplant unit only transplants livers and kidneys, so all nurses there have amazing liver and kidney knowledge.

a typical career path for someone with my qualifications would be to work in sports science, coaching, exercise physiology, rehabilitation or research.

in my role as a director and presenter of a fun television program encouraging children to be physically active, each day is very different. We write our scripts, write and record the music, choreograph the routines and organise our own photo shoots. We spend a few weeks filming our series, which is filled with dancing and interviews. In the lead up to this we’re sourcing material, script editing and maintaining our own fitness. We tour around the country for days, sometimes weeks. My favourite part of the job is performing live for kids and parents – there is so much energy in the room!

My advice to anyone considering a profession in human movement is to go for it. There’s no better feeling than getting everyone energised and having fun. Let’s make a difference to Australia’s health, wellbeing and fitness.

a typical career path for someone with my qualifications is often between business and technical worlds. My past roles have included test analysis, technical project management, and management consulting (strategy and business operations).

in my role I manage both the sales and operations for partners that resell Google Apps for Business, such as managed service providers, systems integrators, and telecommunications providers across Asia-Pacific. It’s my job to manage all parts of their Google business, whether it be their sales, marketing, technical or operations. Think of it like a business relationship manager.

My partners are all over Asia-Pacific, which means no two days are alike. I could be in Hong Kong helping to improve a partner’s sales operations; delivering training to Indian partners via Google Hangouts; or collaborating with teams at Mountain View, California – our global headquarters. It’s a privilege to work with so many talented people, across different cultures and with different perspectives.

My advice to students thinking about a career in IT is run, don’t walk. Seize the opportunity! I love that technology can unlock so many possibilities for business, things we haven’t even thought of yet. This degree gives you the skills to be as business-oriented or as technical as you like – I’m definitely proof of that.

a typical career for someone with my qualifications is difficult to describe. There really is no typical career. That’s the best part of doing a leisure management degree combined with International Studies – the choices are endless. You can go from working in hospitality to events, or in my case a sports focus such as skiing and snowboarding.

in my role as International Ski Federation Coordinator for the Bring Children to the Snow, I am responsible for the direction of the project, development and structuring of communication campaigns and developing and maintaining relationships with partners and sponsors. I work in a team of over 250 organisers in 39 countries around the world. My office overlooks a postcard view of the Swiss Alps, but I do as much work on the road as I do in the office. My job has given me the opportunity to visit Austria, Poland, Italy, Japan and many other countries.

My advice to anyone considering International Studies or Leisure Management is that they will provide you with a very open career path and a great learning experience. Spending one year overseas and learning a different language while at university as part of my International Studies degree was a unique opportunity. With these degrees you can work almost anywhere.

practical leGal traininG practical legal training (plt) is an essential study requirement for any person wishing to practise law in nsw. Uts is the only university to offer an accredited plt program in sydney. plt at Uts requires students to complete three subjects and 80 days of work placement.

“The PLT program focuses on how to apply your legal knowledge in a practical context. On the academic side, the PLT subjects allowed us to participate in UTS’s mock courtroom to examine and cross-examine witnesses as either the defence counsel or prosecution; act for ‘clients’ on the sale of land and business; and practice our interview and negotiation skills in simulated scenarios with real people playing the role of the clients and opposing solicitor.

“For the professional practice component, I completed my work placements at Linklaters in London – a global commercial law firm; King & Wood Mallesons – a leading commercial law firm in the Asia-Pacific region; and David Begg & Associates – a small commercial litigation firm in Sydney. The cases and transactions I worked on across all three firms were diverse – from acting for the borrower to raise six billion euros in a syndicated loan involving 39 banks in London, to litigating against three defendants for operating a fraudulent investment scheme in Sydney. These experiences gave me a great insight into the legal profession and the many different career paths open to a law graduate.

MootinG coMpetitions the faculty of law and Uts law students’ society run mooting competitions throughout the year for students, and organise Uts participation in competitions with other universities both locally and internationally. Mooting involves two opposing teams presenting written and oral arguments around a set of hypothetical facts in front of a judge, in a mock courtroom. Mooting enhances legal written and oral skills and encourages students to develop their legal argument in a time-pressed environment.

in my role I conduct social research to understand the needs of communities in developing countries and design strategies for aid and development projects. My focus areas are justice and gender issues, governance and democratisation. I’ve recently been in Afghanistan researching ways in which women’s rights can be ensured and their participation in decision-making increased. I’ll then present some strategies to government policy makers. In previous roles I’ve also developed training programs in East Timor, Cambodia and Afghanistan around public education, human rights monitoring and the provision of legal aid services for vulnerable groups, predominantly women.

My advice for anyone considering a career in law is that it’s a very rewarding area of work that really enables you to use your education to make a difference in the world. I didn’t follow the traditional path of practising law, but I love that I have a real impact on the way policies are developed. You become a part of the nation building and global development process and have the ability to influence it in a unique way.

field trips students who study environmental related courses at Uts take part in a number of compulsory field trips as a part of their degree. these trips teach students how to undertake effective practical work and conduct experimental procedures outside of the lab. field trips range from day trips in the sydney area to week long visits to Heron island, one tree island and other locations throughout the Great Barrier reef.

“The field trips are invaluable for developing skills. While on a field trip we work in teams to design experiments and acquire the equipment needed before conducting the experiment and processing the results. The trips also provide you with an understanding of the pressures associated with fieldwork, such as time, weather and money.

“Learning how to use the equipment is essential for Environmental Studies’ students. These trips gave me the opportunity to use on-site equipment I had never used before and familiarise myself with software and tools that research scientists use every day.

“My favourite trips were definitely One Tree Island and Heron Island because we were able to stay at the research stations and conduct our own experiments. One Tree Island is a remote, pristine island near Heron and the only thing on the island is the research station

– so not many people get to go there. We all felt like we were on this exciting adventure!”

a typical career path for someone with my qualifications would be to work as a chemist, molecular scientist, environmental chemist, regulatory toxicologist, and even food and wine producer. There’s such a variety of industries that require people with a chemistry background and knowledge.

in my role as a radiochemist, my area of expertise is in gamma radiation – its interaction with matter and its monitoring. In a nutshell, I profile radioactive waste for a living. My team is responsible for ensuring that only non-radioactive waste leaves ANSTO for disposal. We profile the waste and separate the radioactive and non-radioactive elements. This way, we minimise the radioactive waste to be disposed. I’d say we’re similar to ‘border security’- protecting the environment and community!

i’ve also worked in environmental monitoring where I analysed samples for volatile organic compound; in the food and beverage industry at Coca Cola in quality assurance labs; and as an aerosol quality control chemist for the company that makes Mortein fly spray. All this and I’ve yet to try the pharmaceutical, military, forensic, medical or regulatory affairs industry!

credit recoGnition If you have undertaken previous studies, you may be eligible to apply for credit recognition. This means that subjects you have studied previously will be recognised and you won’t have to repeat them. Formerly known as advanced standing or recognition of prior learning.

electives As well as the core subjects required by each course, students usually have to choose several additional subjects to help them accumulate enough credit points to graduate. These are called electives.

entrY patHwaY Your ATAR isn’t the only way to get accepted into uni. If your marks aren’t high enough or you aren’t a recent school leaver, you have other options including TAFE or UTS: INSEARCH. See page 60.

entrY scHeMe An entry scheme allows students to boost their application into UTS by using additional criteria, rather than solely their ATAR. See page 58.

BacHelor’s deGree This is the most common undergraduate degree. It combines numerous subjects but must have core subjects and a major.

BonUs points A type of entry scheme, where students can gain points in addition to their ATAR, boosting their application for entry. The term ‘bonus points’ can be used for a variety of different schemes across universities. At UTS, the term is often used in reference to the Year 12 Bonus Scheme. See page 58.

censUs date The last day to withdraw from a subject without incurring financial penalty. There are two census dates during the year, one for each semester of study. See page 68 for important dates at UTS.

coMBined deGrees Often referred to as a ‘double degree’, this allows students to study two programs from different academic areas at the same time and graduate with two degrees. See the ATAR pull-out at the front of this guide for a list of combined degrees.

core sUBJects Compulsory subjects within a degree. Students must successfully complete all their core subjects in order to graduate.

credit points It’s like a points system. Each subject is worth a certain number of credit points based on the amount of work required. You need to finish a required amount of credit points to graduate.

Transferring is a competitive process, so achieving good marks during your first year is essential.

Similarly, if you would like to study a combined degree and don’t achieve the marks, you might consider commencing the single degree, and then applying to transfer into the combined degree at the end of your first year.

> combine your degree If you don’t meet the ATAR cut-off for your first preference, choose a combined course with a lower ATAR cut-off requirement.

local stUdents Most local students will be studying in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), where the Australian Government makes a contribution to the cost of your study while you pay a student contribution.

> student contributions Student contributions are calculated per subject. Subjects are split into three bands: Band 1, Band 2 and Band 3, each band varying in cost. See the table below as a guide to the cost of your student contribution.

> Hecs-Help Most domestic students pay their student contribution through the HECS-HELP scheme. This means the government loans you the money to pay your student contribution, which is paid directly to the university. You will start repaying your HECS-HELP loan when your income gets above a certain amount. For the 2012-2013 tax year, the repayment threshold is $49,095.
