Principle (Scene) Visuals Script Production Notes(1) Dummie 1: Welcome

    to 10 Guiding Principles of

    Instructional Technology

    and Distance Education

for dummies. You aregoing to learn important

    principles that will make

    you one smart dummy

    on the ITDE highway.

    Dummy 2 I hope so

    1. (2) Analyze your learnersFly in from right side You must be able to analyze

    your learners. Learners

learns different ways, styles, and times.Understanding andaddressing the individualnature of each learner isimportant. This informationwill act as a guide duringthe design of the lesson(Smaldino, Lowther, &Russell, 2012).

Having stated goals areessential for the instructor.Begin with the end in mind. Objectives should beS.M.A.R.T.Now as Ko & Rossen(2010) stated dont driveyourself crazy trying towrite precise learningobjectives (p.57) The pointis to express as clearly andplainly as possible what youwant the learners to do andhow you want them to apply

what they learned.Dummy 2: You cant be

smart if you are a dummy!

    3. (4)Learners must beengaged and motivated

Learners needs should besupported. If you know thepurpose of the lesson, asSimonson says, it is okay tode-emphasize theinformative part of theinstruction for morediscovery of information. This will help keep learnersengaged (Simonson, 2012,

    p. 159).Even trying simple

icebreaking activities willhelp learners engage insimple team building.(Ko & Rossen, 2010, p.175) Oh yeah, just becausethey are engaged doesntmean they are motivated! Isuggest you use the ARCS

model which stands forAttention, Relevance,Confidence, Satisfaction. It reinforces expectation, provides opportunities forsuccess and attributingsuccess to effort (Keller,2006).

    4. (5) Should incorporateWeb 2.0 tools into lessondesign

    Slide in Blooms Taxonomy

Why not incorporate Web2.0 tools into theclassroom? Web 2.0 tools

can be used in all levels ofBlooms taxonomy.

Blooms taxonomy ofremembering, understanding, analyzing, evaluating, and creating canbe addressed using Web 2.0tools in the classroom (Marotta, 2011). Blogs, wikis, podcasts, and social

networks support criticalthinking, activeparticipation, collaborativelearning, two waycommunication and socialpresence. However, if youshould set norms andexpectations prior to usingWeb 2.0 tools with yourlearners. (Usluel and

Mazman, 2009).These tools could also beused for formativeevaluation of your learnerstoo.

    6. (7) Must evaluate andrevise

It is not possible to know ifthe instructional plan is

effective or how to revisestrategies if you do notassess learner achievementas well as evaluate theinstructor, The instructorcan be evaluated throughthe four basic types ofinstructor evaluation: self, student, peer andadministrator (Smaldino,

    Rowther, &Russell, 2012 p.60).

Division isntjust for theroads. Division occursdigitally. You mustacknowledge the digitaldivide. Once again this isanother reason why youshould analyze yourlearners. Your learners maybe located in a rural andlower socioeconomic

regions. Even though yourlearners may have access tothe Internet they may notunderstand how to useInternet resources. It is alsoimportant to note that notall learners have easy

You cant expect yourlearners to be engaged whenyou are ill prepared.

Planning is the key toeffective instruction nomatter the instructionaldelivery or what type ofmedia is used. Planningahead keeps you ahead ofthe curve (Dick & Carey)Using a systematicapproach to instructionaldesign such as the Dick &

Carey model is a powerfultool for planning the lesson.
