Cowichan Kids 5Message from Phil Kent Chair, Council of Partners

I do not intend to sound cliché’ but children are our future. Children of today will be our leaders of tomorrow. Children who are raised

healthy, safe, socially and emotionally enriched will move our society forward in a positive way. As adults, parents and a community it is our responsibility to do everything in our power to ensure our children’s success in school and in life. Cowichan Success by 6 works diligently to promote this message and to make the Cowichan Valley the best place to raise a child. The Champion for Children Awards of Excellence strives to seek out champions within the region who make significant contributions to the health and wellbeing of our children. Each of you could think of someone you know who gives our children the very best whether that be as a doctor, teacher, coach, grandparent or next door neighbour. By honouring and celebrating our champions we can build a foundation of leaders in our community who will continue to strive for the best for our children. It only takes a minute to share your champion with us and tell us why they deserve to be recognised! In turn we will honour and celebrate them and thank them for being some of the most important citizens living in the Cowichan Valley!Send your nomination to [email protected] today!

Awareness and anticipation of potential dangers are the best preventative methods for avoiding accidents or injuries in young children. Not every tip can be mentioned in this article but here are a few ideas to consider.

Falls:Keep a hand on baby while diapering.Do not use baby walkers with wheels. Stationary exercisers are safer.Use safety straps on high chairs, strollers and shopping carts. Never place bouncy chairs or

car seats on tables, counters or beds.Use anchored gates at the top and bottom of stairs- pressure gates can easily be pushed over.Teach children the rules of the road and simple traffic safety.Ensure your child wears a helmet when biking,

skateboarding, scootering and rollerblading. Helmets absorb the blow and minimize violent movement of the brain within the skull.Do not place furniture close to windows or balconies. Climbing may lead to tragic falls. Place window guards on second story windows and above or fasten windows so they do not open more than 10 cm or 4 inches.Anchor book shelves and other unstable furniture to the wall.

Car Seat Safety:Babies and children need a car seat every time they ride in a car. NEVER hold a child on your lap.Read car seat instructions carefully for proper installation procedures. NEVER place your

child’s car seat in the front seat if it has an airbag.Use a Canadian Standards Association approved rear-facing car seat until your child is at least one year old AND weighs at least 20 lbs or 9 kg. Then you can switch to a CSA approved front facing car seat. When your child reaches the maximum height and weight for his seat, move him to a booster seat until he reaches 80 lbs or 36 kg.

Drowning:NEVER leave a child unattended near ponds, pools, or any form of water including buckets and kiddie pools, even for a minute. If possible ensure all unsafe areas are fenced, gated and locked at all times. Drowning is the number one cause of death in children under the age of 7.

Bathroom Safety:Always stay with your child when she is in the bath.Test the water before you put baby in. Water should feel warm, not hot. Lower water tank temperature to below 120 degrees F or 49 degrees C. Children’s skin is much thinner than adults and hot water will burn a child’s skin more quickly and at lower temperatures than adults.Always keep medication locked away and out of reach of children. Children may eat and swallow substances even if they have bad smells and tastes.Kitchen Safety:Always check the temperature of liquids and solids before serving.Keep all poisons (cleaning products, cigarettes, alcohol, medicine), locked up and or out of reach of children. Many toddlers can open child- resistant containers. When possible cook on the back burners of the stove.Install cabinet and drawer locks.

Burns:Install safety gate around fireplaces.Do not walk with hot liquids while children are underfoot.Keep hot coffee and tea cups out of reach.Turn pot handles in while cooking.

Poison:In addition to alcohol, medication, cleaning solutions, paint thinners and more- Don’t forget that many common household plants are toxic if swallowed.Pay attention to outside plants and dangers as well.NEVER store poisons in pop bottles or containers other than their original container.

Choking:Always put baby to sleep on her back. Do not use a pillow. (Don’t

forget to check for crib recalls).Keep small pieces and toys out of babies reach.Keep latex balloons away from children. Pieces of the balloon can cause fatal choking.Check pacifiers regularly for stickiness and cracks. Throw it away if found.Tie up curtains and blind cords.Cut food into very small pieces. Avoid nuts, popcorn, gum, hard candy, and whole hot dogs until your child is over 4.

Pets:NEVER leave children unattended around family pets especially if they are not known by the children. A family pet can quickly turn on a child or infant who pokes or pulls at an unsuspecting pet.Pet kibbles can easily cause choking in small children who are tempted to eat it too.Last but not least- You have done your best to provide your child with the safest environment possible but don’t forget that tobacco smoke is toxic not only to your child but to you too!

February is known as the month of love. Traditionally Saint Valentine’s Day, or Valentine’s Day on February 14 is a special occasion for couples to celebrate their togetherness. However, this day can be an opportunity to remember to take time to shower all our loved ones with affection, love and gratitude.Children especially need our attention, kindness and patience even when we feel life is going at a frantic and busy pace. Why not use this occasion to reflect on the blessings in our life and include our children in heartwarming activities. Here are some ideas to get started: Try making a ‘wreath of love’ made of paper hearts listing something you believe in like laughter, forgiveness and so on or list all the qualities you love about children and share the list with them over a heart shaped cookie. Do good deeds for family, friends or neighbours and leave a calling card appropriate to the person such as “Mommy loves you.” Go for a wintery walk with children and bring a small tree branch inside to hang homemade hearts

from each twig. Express your love for each other by writing a meaningful message on each heart such as I love Mom’s hugs, or I love Dad’s cooking. Another fun idea is to write “I love you” with a dull pencil on a banana skin. Within an hour or so, your special message will become visible! (Ideas courtesy of Family Fun Book: More than 400 Amazing, Amusing, and All-Around Awesome Activities for the Entire Family! by J. Hilton, 1998).There are countless more ways to show you care, but most importantly the best is the gift of time and attention you can offer your family or children in your care. Whether it is truly listening to their stories or playing a board game together, they will remember the warm feeling of importance they felt in that moment. For more fun ideas, check out your local library. If you are a registered care provider with the CVCCRR, come by our office and check out our great resources and lending library. Have you ever had a toothache? I have, and I have to tell you that I can’t imagine the pain a child must feel when they have a sore tooth. Often children don’t know if their tooth is sore, or are too scared to tell an adult they have a toothache for

fear they might get in trouble. Tooth decay can affect more than just a child’s confidence, it can affect their ability to chew food, talk, smile, and even affect their ability to sleep through the night. Simple tasks such

as going to school each day or playing outside can be affected if a child has a sore tooth. Prevention is the key. Start teaching your child to take care of their teeth at an early age, let them watch

you brush and floss your own teeth to show them how easy it is. Limiting or cutting out sugary drinks and snacks from their diet is also important. Sticky foods such as fruit leathers or candies can stick in the grooves of teeth, and can cause cavities. If your child sleeps with a bottle, try to make sure the bottle only contains water. Milk, breast milk and even formula contain sugar, and when this sugar sits on the teeth through the night, it can wreak havoc on baby teeth. If you are feeding a bottle to your child before bed, make sure you wipe out their mouth with a clean soft cloth afterwards, and brush their teeth with their toothbrush. Lifting their upper lip is an excellent way for you to check for any discolorations on their front teeth. Most baby bottle tooth decay begins on the front teeth. I know that there are many families in our community who do not have dental coverage, but there is a program available through The Ministry of Social Development. It is called The BC Healthy Kids Program, and it is available to families who have been approved for MSP Premium Assistance can be signed up for the program. For more information you can call the Ministry of Health Services toll free at 1-800-663-7100. If you are ever unsure about what is going on in your child’s mouth or you have any concerns, contact your local dentist or health centre. We are very fortunate to have a few children’s specialists, Pedodontists, here in the Cowichan Valley. It never hurts to ask, and reassurance and answers can help both you and your child sleep soundly at night. Through early prevention, education, and of course nutrition, children can have a wonderful chance to grow up cavity-free. By Shelly Sorensen, RDH.

The long dark and dreary days are upon us as we move through the coming weeks. So what can we do for the extra hours spent inside wondering what to do? First of all, turn OFF the Television and computer! Imagination and creativity abound if you encourage it to happen. Choose to build brains by doing.... not by watching!• Now is the time for great forts made out

of old sheets and treasure maps leading to secret hidden prizes. Puzzles, favourite stories turned into puppet plays and setting up a store in the kitchen can keep youngsters engaged for hours. Forget about the mess.... it all cleans up later.

• Thrift stores are filled with inexpensive dress up items, accessories and more that will provide for hours of dramatic play out of the “tickle trunk.”

• Get the children to tell a story and have mom or dad write it down. The children can illustrate it later and have a new book that they can read (or re-tell) to add to their collection of favourites.

• Winter time is a perfect time for science experiments like putting a raw egg still in its shell in a glass of vinegar and taking it out each day over a period of a week to see what happens to it.... Mom and dad will be thrilled too. Measure it, feel it, guess what will happen next.

• Looking through a magnifying glass at common household items will amaze children for hours.

• The favourite picnic dinner in the living room on a blanket will be remembered until next winter when you can do it all over again.

• At bath time before bed put some food colouring in shaving cream and let the children create beautiful art on the bathtub wall. They will smell delicious and the mess just washes away. Or for the most magical bath time ever- purchase some inexpensive glow sticks at the dollar store and place them in the bathtub in the dark!

• Don’t forget to get some outside time too! We are never too cold to be outside so take advantage of living on the south coast to explore forest trails, local parks and mud puddles in the back yard. Dress warmly with a good pair of boots and mittens and get outside too.

Bringing out the best in our children is no easy task. While our kids are born with all of the wonderful virtues within them, waiting to be developed, it is sometimes difficult to see them, and even harder to help your child (and ourselves) to call on that positive quality in moments of crisis. One of the best tools I found has been the Virtues Parenting Program, based on the Virtues Project developed by Linda Kavelin Popov and Dan Popov of Salt Spring Island. Both as a parent and in working with many families, I have seen parents affect tremendous changes in seemingly overwhelming family dynamics by applying one of the 6 strategies. Simple – yes. Easy – not always! The first strategy we work on is recognizing teachable moments. This involves viewing a challenge as a learning opportunity that helps to build their character, instead of a painful, frustrating experience that they, or we, feel we have no control over. We name the virtue we want to help them with, instead of labelling/blaming in a shaming way. As we put aside our frustration, fear or disappointment and respond instead of react; our children develop competencies instead of shame and guilt. So, what does it look like?Let’s take a fairly common scenario.

Conrad, age 5, and his little brother, Jonathan, have been playing together with their cars and trucks, when you suddenly hear a scream. You go in to see Jonathan rubbing his temple, and Conrad looking worried. When asked, Conrad admits that his brother wouldn’t give him HIS car, so he grabbed it and shoved him down. What do you do?A lot of us would start by saying with a

raised voice ‘What’s wrong with you? Don’t you know you could have really hurt your brother? Is that any way to treat him?’ To which Conrad is thinking to himself ‘Yep, it is – he shouldn’t have taken my toy in the first place!’ At the same time, Conrad is feeling guilt and shame, and what has he learned about a different way to handle himself at another time? Nothing, except maybe to get a bit sneakier!Option two – scan the situation, see that there is no serious damage, and take at least

two, maybe three breaths before saying ANYTHING. Then, name the act along with a desired virtue. ‘Pushing your brother was dangerous. He could have been badly hurt. How could you have used carefulness to get your car back?’ After a short chat about it, let it go, and when everybody’s adrenaline is lowered (maybe at bedtime), talk it over and/or read together the pages on carefulness, or self-discipline, or

patience in the Virtues Guide so that it is a discussion, and doesn’t feel like a lecture. The last step, and key to growth, is the next time you see Conrad being kind or patient or careful with his brother, you name it, and reinforce the positive behaviour. How many times as parents do we think ‘Don’t disturb them, they’re playing quietly together’? Using the names

of the virtues builds healthy self-esteem, and it’s a new habit for us as well as our children that develops with practice.

Judi McCheane, MSW, RSW, is a play and family therapist in Duncan. She has worked in various Child and Youth Mental Health settings, and has facilitated many Virtues Workshops. She and Lawrene Collins will be starting a 6 week workshop Wednesday evenings in March, after Spring Break. You can reach her at 250-466-4770.

Developing Character In Our Children

SnacksRegular planned snacks are an important part of healthy eating for children.

Children have small stomachs and are not able to eat all the food they need at meals alone. Offer healthy snacks at regular times between meals, 1 ½ - 2 hours before the next meal so that the snack doesn’t affect appetites for lunch or dinner.

Offer 3 meals and 2-3 snacks each day with water between for thirst.

Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide helps with planning healthy meals and snacks. Aim to offer a food from all 4 food groups at meals and foods from 2 food groups at snacks. Canada’s Food Guide is available online at www.healthcanada.gc.ca/foodguide or come to Margaret Moss Health Centre to pick up your copy.

Here are snack choices from each food group:

Vegetables and Fruit: Raw vegetables and fruit pieces (cooked are easier for younger children to chew and less likely to choke on), grated vegetables and salads.

Grain Products: whole wheat breads, pita bread, crackers, rolls, bagels, toast, roti, muffins and loaves made with limited amounts of sugar, enriched dry cereals.

Milk and Alternates: fluid milk, plain yogurt, cheese, dips made from yogurt or cottage cheese.

Meat and Alternates: hard cooked egg, cheese, pieces of lean meat or poultry.

One of the best ways to ensure your child’s health and well being is for the adults

in their life to enjoy eating regular, balanced meals and snacks themselves. Parents and caregivers are role models for children to learn to eat a variety of healthy foods. Eating together in a relaxed and social eating environment is an important part of eating well. Let children see you enjoying food. Providing positive

experiences with food fosters healthy eating habits that can last a lifetime. Have a picnic in the park or on a rainy day spread a tablecloth on the floor for a picnic inside.

Recipes:

Hummus,

19 ounce can of garbanzo beans, (chickpeas), drained and rinsed

1 lemon

1 clove of garlic

1 cup of plain yogurt

1 ½ tsp olive oil

Drain and rinse the garbanzo beans. Juice the lemon. Mince or finely chop garlic.

Mash the garbanzo beans in a bowl with a potato masher. Children love to help with this. Stir in the rest of the ingredients.

Offer a variety of vegetables, whole wheat pita or bagel to dip with.

Banana crackerwiches;

Have children spread peanut butter or pea butter on a graham cracker, add thinly sliced banana coins and put another cracker on top.

Yogurt Pops or Fruitsicles;

Use a popsicle maker, available from the grocery or dollar store.

Mix 1 cup of unsweetened plain yogurt with 3 Tbsp of 100% unsweetened orange juice concentrate. Pour into popsicle maker and freeze to make a creamy orange treat.

Math is much more than numbers! Opportunities to experience math with your child and to build his or her self-confidence and understanding of mathematical ideas are found in simple things we do daily around the house. Here are many ways that parents/adults can support the young child

in learning mathematical concepts. Above all, be positive about Math! Have your child sort his/her favourite toys from smallest to largest. Find other creative ways to sort them.Sort laundry by colour, pattern, types of clothing, etc.Compare some of the trees in your neighbourhood for height.Keep a height chart to measure your child’s growth. When putting away toys, use words like: beside, under, above, below, and next to, to identify the position of the toy.Notice numbers on houses, mailboxes, clothing, uniforms, and say them out loud. When putting away groceries, create a pattern with tins or boxes and have your child guess the pattern or add to the sequence. For example: tall tin, tall tin, short tin, tall tin, tall tin, short tin…Play “Shape Eye Spy” by looking for

different geometric shapes. “I spy something that is shaped like a triangle.”Create a picture using different shapes like circles, squares, triangle, and rectangles or find shapes in a picture.Spill items out of a cup (two types of cereal) count them, sort them and see who has more or less and by how many.In the garden count flowers, compare on kind to another using words like more than and less than.Deliberately and frequently use appropriate math language. Provide your child with items that allow for measuring.Play games, all kinds of games. Count, clap, sing, dance – all of these enjoyable experiences with patterns lay a strong foundation for mathematical success.
