As advisor of The Coyote Chronicle, I want to congratulate the IDS middle school newspaper club on the publication of their first issue of the 2010-2011 academic year. This year, we have the benefit of having two seasoned newspaper participants, Tyler M. and Chris M., as student editors. They are now responsible for the paper’s design, format, and editing, and should be particularly proud of their eorts for this first publication. I know that The Coyote Chronicle is in good hands with these two motivated and energetic students at the helm. In this issue, you will recognize several return columnists, as well as new contributors. The students who participated in the newspaper club last year returned to school with fresh ideas about how to develop their individual journalistic pursuits and ready to oer guidance to those new to The Coyote Chronicle scene. This type of exchange of ideas and skills represents the continually evolving benefits of a publication such as this one. In one early meeting this fall, a student described how she enjoys designing her own articles about topics that are entirely self-inspired. This independent spirit clearly comes through in the articles on these pages. The newspaper give students a voice to describe their special interests and the significant events and people in their lives, and to share this with the rest of the IDS community. The Roving ReportersBy Caroline C. and Camille M. We are the Roving Reporters of IDS for 2010/2011. We are both in seventh grade and our names are Caroline C. and Camille M. Every week we interview four different teachers so the members of IDS can learn more about them. Keep reading to see if it’s your teacher we interview next! We hope you enjoy our article!

In the school year of 2010-2011, we have a great selection of wonderful teachers, old and new. Mrs, Stutz is the newest science teacher in the Middle School. Before accepting her current position at IDS, she taught for seven years as a sixth grade science teacher at Hammond School in Columbia, South Carolina.

Before she began as a science teacher, Mrs. Stutz was a park ranger in South Carolina. As part of her job, she picked up trash and cleaned bathrooms. Mrs. Stutz didn’t like that too much, so she began to look for something new. She decided she wanted to become a teacher. She explained, “I didn't want to clean toilets anymore.” At one point in her career, she wrote for National Geographic!

Mrs. Stutz is a great contribution to the Middle School at IDS. She lets students participate in fun activities, while also teaching her lessons. She is a kind, open-hearted person, who will always try to help her student in any way she can..

Out and AboutStories from Our Summer Adventures

Limelight Spotlight: Schoolhouse Rockby Katy S.T.Backstage, sixteen boys and girls take a deep breath. The crowd falls into silence as the spotlight comes up on Patrice Morton, played by IDS seventh grader, Nicole D.. Nicole plays a teacher, who is having a nightmare before her first day of school. An angel and devil fight over her, as to whether she will fail or succeed in school. Patrice wakes up and turns on the TV. To her surprise, the characters from her favorite childhood mini-series appear in front of her! They all have something to teach her about school and being a teacher.

Many memorable songs came to life in this amazing reenactment of the educational shorts from the 1980’s. Some of these songs include: “Conjunction Junction,” “Interjections,” “I’m Just a Bill,” and “A Noun is a Person, Place, or Thing.” A wonderful play for all ages, this show provided great family fun this summer!

The whole cast worked so hard over the summer, learning lines, songs, and dances, creating sets, and placing advertisements. The cast was mostly made up of IDS students, including Chloe M. Her favorite part of Schoolhouse Rock was, as she described, “The cast, they’re so fun and awesome.” Jenny W., also in the production, says that she liked “the singing and dancing” the best. The set was fun and colorful, including chalkboards with everyone’s signatures. Mr. Schoen, the director, comments that a play is a “collaboration, unlike any other project.” He believes that “not one actor, singer, musician can do it alone.” Mr. Schoen is correct, a play like Schoolhouse Rock, was a great opportunity for teamwork and compromise.

Adventures in Brownstone ParkBy Chris M.

I looked down. Below me, about 50 fifty feet, I could see the water, scattered with tiny kid form shapes. I strapped myself into the zip line, and whoosh I was in the air. It felt like I was flying. I was at Brownstone Park, a water park built into the Portland Brownstone quarry. At that time, I was flying on a zip line going over the water. Brownstone Park has four zip lines. Each zip line has an exciting ladder to climb. On one zip line, a rope ladder had to be climbed. On two, you had to pull yourself up a 15-foot rope. Zip line three and four included a large rock-climbing wall, built on the edge of the quarry. In the park there was an exciting cliff jump and a large water slide as well. You could also enjoy using snorkeling and scuba diving gear. Wake boarding, an exciting activity was also available, where a board is attached to a motorboat. The goal is to try to stay on the board, while the motorboat reaches speeds up to 50 miles per hour! During October, there is a challenging, but fun obstacle course. Kayaking and biking are also possibilities at this fun waterpark.

In the water, there are many floatable and fun rafts. One raft called the iceberg is a large rock-climbing wall. Another raft works like a sea- saw. One person jumps on and the other person goes flying up to ten feet. There are also many floatable trampolines.

Whether you are going to Brownstone in the cold, chilly months or during the warm, hot summer, Brownstone Park will be a fun- filled adventure. You can visit the website at <http://brownstonepark.com/ >.

Trendy with Your Own TwistBy Betty S.

School has started and so has fall. The main question asked before the school day starts is “What do I wear?” Luckily this seasons trends have so many options, but never forget to add your own twist to your outfit!

Possibly my favorite trend this school year is jackets. There are so many different kinds!! You could go with a really simple yet sophisticated blazer or a brightly colored pea coat... anything depending on your personality. One main problem with looking for a fabulous jacket is they can cost ridiculous amounts of money! In these times, you always need to think about what will give the most “bang for your buck.” There are some stores that have extremely cute clothes that can be pretty pricey, but if you search carefully with you eyes pealed for a bargain, chances are you can find almost the exact same outfit for much less. This doesn’t apply to just jackets, but any article of clothing.

This season leopard print is extremely stylish. When you are constructing an outfit with leopard print always keep in mind that this fun print is for use in moderation, like slipping on a pair of leopard print ballet flats or hairband. Again, this not about having a “Coach” Leopard print bag. You can look great with a identical leopard print headband from “The Icing.”

One of my favorite things to do on the weekends is to paint my nails. Of course, every season brings new colors. This season there are many choices. Firstly, there are neutral colors, such as pale pink, tan, and stormy grays. Any shade of grey is very trendy, ranging from almost black to shiny silver. If you want some colors that are a little more “out of the box,” I would go with metallic navy, maroon, or sparkly black. My money saving tip for polish is to buy the really cheap colors at Walgreens. True, they might not last as long, but if you get one bottle of nice overcoat. then your nails will look flawless for quite a long time.

Bonjour?

This season has a new trend that I really love... Paris! Now I know that a city can’t be a trend, but the Parisian style is taking over this season.

The color scheme of this trend is black, white, bright sapphire, and bright red. Depending on your style, you can either keep it simple, maybe polka dot shirt and black skinny jeans, or exuberant, such as a polka dot shirt, black skinny jeans, a red scarf, and a chunky blue bracelet.

Another French element is a flippy skirt. Something that looks really light and cute. To save money, don’t by a million different patterned skirts. Instead get a neutral color, such as black or white. Then, at a discount store, you can buy a pack of fun, yet cheap patterned leggings. So, with one skirt you can have a million different accessories that makes it a completely different outfit! Type to enter text

Keep in mind these Fall Fashions, but never forget to let your unique style shine.

The Book Corner

By Chloe M.A week ago, I decided that I wanted to visit the bookstore. I was looking for something very interesting, and also suspenseful. As I was browsing, I pulled out a paperback which was titled 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass. I knew I would love this novel as soon as I read the back cover. This book was perfect, because it was exactly what I wanted in a book.

This story was about a almost 11 year old girl named Amanda. She has been waiting to have her 11 year birthday for as long as she can remember. Her best friend, Leo, shares a birthday with her. However, since last year they have been in a huge fight, and haven’t spoken since. While Amanda is at home doing a Hollywood-themed birthday, Leo has planned a huge party, with just about everything. Amanda can’t wait for the day after her birthday, because 11 seems like an age when anything can happen, to Amanda. There’s only one problem. The next day is her birthday all over again. It is kind of confusing at first but her birthday repeats because Leo and Amanda are fighting, and Leo’s birthday is repeating too. The women who watched their parents adopt them made it so their birthday repeated, so they would make up. I finished this book by the end of the week. This book was just what I have been looking for, and I love this book because there is no boring parts, all the parts have something interesting going on. If I could rate this book, I would rate it 5 stars.

IDS Soccer Teams Play at the K-O Tournment By Taylor T. and Chris M. On October 3rd, IDS played in the Kings Wood Oxford Tournament. We all had a great time. We had a ton of spirit and cheered each other on.

The boys and the girls traveled to Kingswood Oxford. Arriving at 8:30 in the morning, the school was a buzz. Children passed soccer balls back and forth. Grownups tried to stay warm in the chilly weather. Coaches shouted at their players to get moving. The boys looked forward to playing K.O., Country, Foote, and Chase, while the girls also looked forward to playing all these school and Ethel Walker. The games started and the boys and the girls played there hearts out. Although the boys did not win any games, they scored two points. The girls placed and had a fantastic time. Joe H., Sam H., and Rose H.were chosen as the best players on the teams. All the coaches congratulated the teams and everybody left with a smile on their faces.

This summer was filed with ups and downs in the world of sports. I am going to focus on two athletes who changed the sports world this year and will continue to lead the way in the years ahead, Brett Favre and LeBron James.

I do not know about anyone else, but I got really tired this summer watching Sports Center and only seeing Brett Favre. He is kind of being a drama queen. For the past few years, he has been announcing that he might retire, but then he decides he will play “one more year.” At this rate, Favre will be playing NFL when he gets a discount at Six Flags for being a senior citizen. I have a lot of respect for him, since he is the oldest player in the NFL. I think that he should retire after the long career that he has had.

Another player who was all Sports Center this summer was LeBron James. The reason for this was because at the end of the 2010 season, he became a free agent. This means that he was released from his contract by the Cleveland Cavaliers and could be signed by any other team. I really like LeBron James, but the moment I heard that he was having an hour-long special on his “decision” on ESPN, I lost all respect for him. I thought about how self-centered he must be to have an hour-long special on himself. There were a few possible teams that he was seriously considering to go to after his 2010 season, which were the Knicks, Celtics, Heat, Nets, Bulls, and the Cavaliers. Although he was born and raised in Cleveland and winning two MVP awards there, James made the decision to play for the Miami Heat with Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, to of the best players in the NBA.

In the case of both Favre and James, in the sports world the media can create so much hype about star athletes. I think that Brett Favre has played for so long that he deserves respect, but it seems like for a few weeks this summer he was the only thing in the sports world. LeBron James does not have as many years under his belt as Favre does, but he is one of, if not the best basketball player that has played since I can remember. I do not, however, this he deserves his own special on ESPN.

You can be sure I’ll keep you posted on this seasons’ progress.

Siwaee Polow: A SPECIAL RECIPE

This dish originated from my great grandmother and has been passed down to all her children’s families from generation to generation. It is only made on special occasions like Eid. All my relatives come to our house to have it on Eid. It is usually eaten in small helpings as it is a desert. It is sweet and delicious. My whole family loves it. Whoever comes to our house always asks if we have leftovers. It is not very well known and is limited to Biharis only. This dish is very famous amongst all “Biharis” people from a town in India. They both were a single country known as the Subcontinent. This was a great sweet dish which was only prepared on special occasions. There are a couple of ways to cook it, but my mother cooks it this way.

1. Take a packet of vermicelli and crush them until they are small enough to fit in one cup. 2. Take pan and add oil in it 3. Heat oil. 4. Then add cloves and cadmium into the pan. Fry them well until they swell and become bigger than their original size.5. Add water and cover the pan till the water starts boiling.6. Add vermicelli into the water and stir well.7. Cover the pan and lower the heat for three to four minutes till the vermicelli soaks the water.8. Now add sugar and mix well 9. Cover the plan and put it on minimum flame.

Animal Corner By Sadie S. and Nora G.-F.

10. Leave it on for a few minutes.11. Take it out in a bowl and garnish with almonds (optional). Now here is how we make the Condense milk:1. Put the milk in a pan and leave it on high flame until it starts boiling.2. Keep on stirring the milk on medium fire for an hour until it’s brownish in color. 3. Now add cream and cook it for ½ an hour more.4. Keep on stirring on low flame.5. When the milk becomes thicker then add condense milk. Keep on stirring for 10 minutes more and then the milk is ready. 6. Take it out in a bowl and let the milk cool.

If you’re a cat lover, but are looking for a pet that’s a little less common, you’d probably enjoy owning a ferret. When ferrets are babies they are known as kits. When they travel in groups they are known as fesynes. Ferrets are sociable animals, so if you don’t have as much time to play with your ferret, like the hours when you’re at school, you should definitely buy two of them. There are many different kinds of ferrets. A silvermitt is white with some occasional grey hairs. An albino is almost exactly the same, except it has red eyes. A butterscotc h ferret has blonde fur, and a cinnamon is speckled with light brown and white. Sable and chocolate ferrets are almost the same, with white tummies, deep brown fur, and masks.

Although ferrets are adorable, they do have a few negative points. First of all, they smell. You can give them surgery, which makes them smell slightly better, but it just costs extra money and is kind of harsh. However, some ferrets already come this way anyway. Do not try special shampoos on them because ferrets have special oils on their skin and in their fur, and the soaps can harm them. Just wash them with plain water.

Most pet stores carrie ferrets, especially sables and an occasional silvermitt or butterscotch, but check your town to see if they have a local ferret shelter, as many towns do. Once you buy your ferret, you can also walk it. Many pet stores offer leashes made especially for ferrets-for extra exercise. You can buy hammocks for your ferrets to sleep in too.
