The Roving ReportersBy Christine H., Anika Rose L., and Rachel D.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:If you could have any animal in the world as a pet, what would you have and why?

Ms. Warner: “Chinchilla or goat. Why? Because they’re soft and goats are funny and taste good.”Ms. Mansfield: “Golden Retriever because they get along well with people.”

Ms. Thody: “A horse because they’re fun to ride.”

Sra. Dwyer: “An otter because they’re cute and good swimmers.”

Ms. Smith: “A koala because they’re cute and cuddly and I could love it up.”

IDS Girls Play Foote School By Ms. BoyceGirls soccer played The Foote School of New Haven at IDS. Trailing 6-0 at halftime the entire team worked together to play defence and only allowed 1 goal in the second half. Goalkeepers Jazzlyn S. and Paige W. made some fantastic saves throughout the entire game. We even had chances late in the game to score a few goals.

ABOUT THE ROVING REPORTERS:Each issue, 8th graders, Anika, Christine, and Rachel will ask a selection of IDS teachers a question. Their responses will likely be quite candid and they will allow us to highlight some of the great personalities that we have at this school.

Sports UpdateIDS Boys play Country By Thomas H.

It was a cloudy day on September 17 when the IDS boys’ soccer team stepped out on to the field to play Country Middle School. Country came ready to play. The game started and soon Country got control of the ball. Swoosh! The ball got right past our goalie, Joe S. This led to an icy cold streak for IDS for the long first half. At half time, IDS finally came off the field beaten and bruised.

However, IDS never gave up and soon into the second half, Nick B. scored a goal for IDS. Then, Jordan S. scored another goal for IDS making the score 10-2. Country came back to score two more goals on goalie, Thomas H. The remainder of the game was restless. Finally, the referee blew the whistle and the game was over. After the game, Coach Sisson told the team “I’m proud of you guys because you never gave up. You see what happens when you don't give up? You score goals.” The boys’ soccer team played a great game.

A Good Day Starts with a SmileBy Nick B. For the first edition of this column, I have interviewed Rachel D. Rachel is an eighth grader at the Independent Day School, and goes monthly with her pet rabbit to nursing homes all over Connecticut to brighten up the days of the elderly. She does this as a volunteer through the Humane Society, an organization that helps animals in need, or uses animals for the better good of people. The Humane Society coordinates with Rachel what nursing home she should bring her rabbit, Angel, to next. Once Rachel gets to a nursing home she goes around and lets whomever wants to, pet and hold Angel. About her service work, Rachel says, “I bring Angel to nursing homes each month because I love to see the joy on peoples’ faces when they pet her.” She also loves knowing that she helped the elderly start their day with a smile.

On Sunday September 20 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, CBS broadcasted the 61st Emmy Awards. It was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. For those of you who do not know, the Emmy awards give praise to the national prime-time television broadcasting. The Emmys had its highest rating in three years with 133 million people watching (that’s a 9% increase from 2008). Many people thought that Harris was an overall good host because he was upbeat and funny. As usual, the red carpet was filled with many glamourous and famous faces. For example, Tina Fey (30 Rock), Vanessa L. Williams (Ugly Betty), Heidi Klum (Project Runway) Jon Hamm (Mad Men), and Steve Carell (The Office).

It wouldn’t be an award show without some wacky moments! Here are my seven Emmy Award highlights:

1)Neil Patrick Harris opened the show with a song and dance. He told the viewers to “put down the rome” and joked about his duties of being host. One of this jokes was “it’s my job to make sure things run smoothly. So let’s hope that Kanye West likes 30 Rock.”

2)Things got a little awkward when Amy Poehler decided to have all the actresses in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy category to wear funky eyewear. All of them did it except for Vanessa L. Williams who mouthed “no” to the camera and made a face.

3)Pushing Daisies actress Kristin Chenowheth gave a very sweet, tearful, and squeaky acceptance speech. Pushing Daisies has been cancelled so she explains “Thank you for recognizing me for a show that’s no longer on the air.” She also made jokes about needing a job and wanting to be on Mad Men or the Office.

4)Another shocker was Jon Cryer winning Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Neil Patrick Harris who was also for that ward commented, it’s not awkward… I won’t let it get awkward. This lead to a mini interview by Harris with Cryer asking hum about his Emmy. Overall, it was quite hilarious.

5)Sarah Silverman donned an impressive mustache which definitely turned heads.

6)Jimmy Fallon was unbelievable funny when performing his introduction for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. He fell flat on his back.

7)Neil Patrick Harris performed in a skit as Dr. Horrible. He played an evil scientist interrupting the Emmys to tell viewers that T.V. is a thing in the past. Internet is the future of all viewing.

So there you have it. A mini recap of what happened at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards.

Adventures in PanemBy Nico

The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Colins, is a book about a girl, named Katniss, living in the futuristic country of Panem. This country is built on the ruins of North America, with the Capitol at its center with twelve outlying districts. There used to be a thirteenth district, but when this district revolted, the Capitol bombed the district and it was no more. This inspired the Capitol to create the annual Hunger Games, in which twenty-four tributes from each of the outlying districts would compete in an artificial arena to the death. The last one alive became famous, rich and exempt from ever competing tin the Games again. When Katniss’ little sister, Prim, is chosen by lottery to be a tribute, Katniss takes her place.

I like this novel because it is filled with adventure, hard decisions, and horrible situations. This is a gripping tale about love, friendship, and the cruelty of the human race through the eyes of a young teenage girl. Each page will yield yet another turn and another surprise. This is a book that you will not want to put down until you have read every single word.

Nicolas (Nico) is an eigth grader at IDS. He is interested in music, science, and math, but also loves a good novel!

As we move into fall and the colder weather, you can expect to be seeing some notable new fall trends. Because of the colder weather, many people are choosing to wrap themselves in slouchy, cozy knits. This a great trend because it is comfortable and stylish .

Animal prints are also on a come back. Leopard, zebra and snake skin are among the most fashionable prints at the moment.

To put an interesting new twist on jeans, try this fall’s new denim leggings. Also known as “jeggings,” these jeans have all the comfort of leggings with the appearance of skinny jeans.

In terms of accessories and jewelry, more is more! Cover your arms in bangles and adorn your fingers with fun rings. Necklaces with chains are also huge right now. These necklaces add a rock edge to any outfit.

Fall footwear is all about the over-the-knee boots; the

taller the better!

Science and Nature Hard-Wired The latest in technology from the perspective of Hayden Hard

By Hayden H.

The iPod touch has been out for almost two years. Apple has just released the iPod touch third generation. Not much is new except it has the new iPhone 3gs guts. It has more Ram and a faster processor.

The iPod touch is an all-around great device. There is an application for almost anything and there are a ton of games. It is much easier to scroll threw your music if you have a large library. The touch screen is superb. It flows with your movements and is possibly the best touch screen yet. Videos are amazingly clear and beautiful. The web browser is great for a mobile device. It does not yet support flash player but Adobe and Apple are working on it. The iPod touch is incredibly easy to use.

There are a few drawbacks to the iPod touch. It has frozen on me a couple times, but I just let it run out of battery and then I restarted it and it worked fine. The iPod is also very sensitive to water. I haven’t experienced it first hand but I have read on forums that condensation can kill your device. Apple has installed a water damage switch, so the warranty does not cover water damage.

Other than a few minor gripes, this is an amazing device. If you haven’t tried one out, I highly recommend the new ipod touch.

Perhaps it is the way that they move or how visually pleasing they are. No matter, Koi seem to be the number one, peaceful fish around.

The Purr-Report

Tuffin, our star of this issue, is part Burman, part Siamese cat. Siamese are typically born all white and later get their markings. Siamese are beautiful cats with sapphire-blue eyes, long slim legs, dainty, small oval paws and siren of a voice.

It is said similar cats existed in what is now Thailand for hundreds of years. They were first imported to the U.S.A. in the 1880s.

We love the Siamese breed and we hope you will too!

By Maggie H. and Andrew M.

Hi! I am Andrew M. This year, I am going to be co-writing an advice column with Maggie Hughes. When you need help, you can count on us. You can write to us and we will both give you our different perspectives on the situation. We may agree or disagree on what to do, as I am an eighth-grade boy and Maggie is a sixth-grade girl. It should be interesting to read how our advice compares. My brothers have always asked me for advice and help. I think it will be fun to help and give advice to the IDS community. Please write in with your questions, problems, or any “befuddlements” about school, sports, or life in general. We will do our best to help you.Andrew

I am Maggie H. I am a very good at giving advice even though I am only in 6th grade. I believe our two opinions are both valuable. In this column, people will be able to send us their problems and they will be able to have them answered throughout the newspaper.

Maggie

Here’s an example of a column: Dear Andrew and Maggie, I am having trouble with my schoolwork. I try to sit down and study but I just can’t focus! What should I do?

Dear Studier, You might have information going in one ear and out the other. I suggest trying to have fun while studying. Try making a game or a song about what you need to learn. The information might stay with you and you might enjoy the process more! Good Luck. Andrew and Maggie

Tuffin was found in a cardboard box on Springfield Street in Middletown. A pedestrian found him in a pretty good condition and brought him to CATALES. From then on he has been under the care of CATALES, a non-profit, no-kill organization consisting of volunteers dedicated to improving and enriching the lives of homeless cats and kittens in Middletown.

Tuffin is about 3-4 weeks old and is a Himalayan American Tabby cross . Tuffin has long black hair and big green eyes. He is a carefree, fun-loving kitten.
