  • 3 After collapse of Soviet union, the cold war regimecame to an end

Block based international alignments graduallyreceded and interaction between nations started toaccelerate

At Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summitin 1993, mobility of engineers was linked withinternational standards of competence for recognitionas Professional Engineer.

WTO founded in 1995 facilitated further on free tradeand services

APEC Engineers register, Engineers Mobility Forum(EMF) and ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement(MRA) etc. all encourage the services of ProfessionalEngineers with high professional standards.

Objectives of Professional Development(Professional Competence of an Engineer)

Application of theoretical knowledge to practical situations and to evolve innovative solutions to resolve real life

    problems.

Application of concepts and ingredients of management to professional works including relevant legal and financial

    aspects.

Acquisition and application of necessary communication skills.

Knowledge of latest developments in various fields of engineering including information technology for specific

    and cross discipline application.

Adherence to professional ethics and acquisition of a broader understanding of obligations of engineer to

    society.

    CPD ???

  • 13

CPD provides a means whereby we can keep abreast ofongoing changes, broaden our skills and be moreeffective in our professional work.

CPD may be defined as the intentional updating ofprofessional knowledge and the improvement ofprofessional competence throughout a person'sworking life.

PEC took initiative in 2004 for CPD Framework

As per PEC Act: CPD means the systematic

    maintenance, improvement and broadening of

knowledge, understanding and skill, and the

development of personal qualities necessary for the

execution of professional and technical duties

    throughout the individuals working life.

    Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?

    Powers and Functions:

To prescribe, monitor and review standards of

professional development in line with internationally

    recognized standards

To coordinate implementation of CPD activities

To regulate the engineering professional bodies

    imparting CPD

To record and quantify CPD for each registered person

& issue certificate for CPD status on demand

To conduct EPE and publish results of the same

To perform any other function related to professional

    development of engineers.
