Communications Processor Module
The Encorp P ow er Co mmunications Pro cessor M odule
fulfills the critical role of communicat ions bridge betw een
distributed energy resources and centralized control
fa cilities. The CPM has been designed and built to reliably
accomplish its mission. A recent add itiona l option includes
a R AID con troller to guard a gainst data loss. As part of the
Encorp Product Architecture, the CPM resides onsite
allow ing remote operato rs to a ccess site data and a s w ell as
allowing remote maintenance technicians to access the
CP Ms operating systems and server softw are.
The CPM employs a rugged to w er or w all mount chassis
featuring a passive backplane with a 4-slot PCI, 4 slot ISA
and 2 slot PICM G for use in industrial environments.
The CPM is constructed w ith heavy du ty steel and includes
a sta ndard 400W pow er supply that is UL, CSA and TUVcertified.
The CPM uses the MSC-373, an all-in-one full-sized single
board computer which is designed to fit a high
perfor mance Socket 370 P-II Celeron/P-III Co ppermine
based pro cessor fo r high-end co mputer system
applicat ions w ith P C I/ISA bus archit ecture. It is mad e to
meet todays demanding pace, and be completely
compatible with hardware and software designed for the
IBM PC /AT.
The CPM RAID System ma kes use of P romise
Techno logies ID E RAID contro ller card . The RAID
controller card mirrors data onto two hard drives whichmakes the system tolerant to most drive failures. In case of
a f ailure in one drive, the second drive w ill cont inue to
function and allow the system to continue to run. The goal
of the CPM RAID system is to provide a ro bust fault
tolerant system for Encorp CPM related solutions.
The on-boa rd devices support one AG P-bus VG A and o ne
PC I-bus Netw ork cont roller. Its benefit is to b uild a high
performa nce and high da ta ava ilability system for Encorps
sophisticated fa mily of G at ew ay Servers residing in the
CPM.
This MSC -373 can run w ith Intel Socket 370 processors,
and support up to 1G B SDRAM D IMM modules. The
enha nced on-board P C I-ID E interface can support 4 drives
up to PIO mode 4 timing, and Ultra DM A/33 synchronous
mod e fea tur e. The on-boa rd Super I/O chipset integra tes a
floppy controller, two serial ports, one FIR (Fast Infrared)
port, a nd on e parallel port. Tw o high performance
16C 550-compatib le UARTs pro vide 16-byte send/receive
FIFOs, and the multi-mode parallel port supports
SPP/EPP/EC P funct ion.
Tw o Universal Serial B us port s provide high-speed d at a
communicat ion betw een peripherals and PC . The PICM G
standa rd ma kes the MSC-373 w ork w ith the legacy ISA,
ISA/PC I, o r multi-slots P C I bus ba ckplane. The on-boa rd
32-pin D IP socket support s M -System D isk-O n-C hip Flash
D isk up to 144MB .
Tw o 6-pin M ini-D IN co nnectors are provided to connect
the PS/2 mouse and keyboard . The on-board Flash RO M
is used to ma ke the BIOS upda te easier. An ad ditiona l 5-
pin shroud ed connector is reserved for co nnecting
keyboa rd interface on the ba ckplane.
The high precision R eal Time Clo ck /C alenda r is built t o
support Y2K fo r a ccurate scheduling a nd storing
configuration information.
O ne 4-pin head er is designed to support ATX pow er
function. CPU overheat protection provices security and
stability.
Encorp Intelligence Software
Family of Gateway Servers
The Encorp Intelligence Family o f G a tew ay Servers is a
powerful collection of data servers built on industry
standard communication specifications. The critical
mission of po w er genera tion req uires a number of
speciality functions such as OEM engine electronic data
monitoring, alarm notification, data logging, and
interactive graphical screens. Ra w site da ta for these and
other purposes pass through var ious data filters and
processing algorithms and are displayed on remote client
programs such as the Virtual M aintenance M onitor a nd
the Virtual Pow er Plant.
Virtual Maintenance Monitor
The Virtual Maintenance Monitor (VMM) is a complete
energy information management solution. It can be used
for control, mo nitoring, trending analysis, an d ala rm
notification, all aimed at helping managers reduce energy

Pow er C ontrols, ana lyze da ta to o bserve a sites big picture
or drill dow n for more detail.
Much of the technology that makes it possible to mana ge
gensets from a centra l locat ion resides on-site, near the
gensets. This technology includes Encorps line of
generat or pow er controls and a n industrial computer
called the C ommunication Processor M odule (C PM )
G atew ay. A typical site w ill contain o ne or more Encorp
Power Gold Boxcontrols and a CPM .
Virtual Power Plant
Encorp Intelligence Virtual Power Plant Software takes
adva ntage of t he emerging trend to w ards microgrids made
up of distributed genera tion a ssets, linked together using
secure, cost-effective communication network technology
and controlled b y a remote D ispatch Workstation. The
Virtua l Pow er Plant dispa tches technology neutra l assets
such as diesel and natural gas generators, micro-turbines,
steam and combustion t urbines, w ind-diesel hyb rid
systems, fuel cells, and o ther renew ab le and energy sto ra
technologies. A unique feature of the Virtual Power Pla
is its ability to create any number of virtual sites from t
total resource set available. This allows power produce
to select w hat kinds and t he exact amount of pow er to dispatched.
Encorp Support Services
Energy Management Center
The Encorp Support Energy M ana gement C enter ha s be
designed from t he ground up to pro vide turn-key solutio
to mo nitor, report , and o ptimize the distributed generati
efforts of small to large commercial operations.
The Energy Management Center collects operational da
at close intervals from on-site CPM s using either a d ial-or persistant connection to a utoma tically transmit at
regular, pre-programmed intervals. Data is collected an
stored in a database. The data is periodically processed
formatted, and sent to clients via e-mail, fax or secure
w eblink. Energy q uality a nd usage patterns can easily b
tracked and ana lyzed to optimize pow er usage.
