Work by Paston Sixth FormCollege student to be

    published in German Magazine

As part of their independent learning, German students at PastonSixth Form College were asked to produce posters, articles and

podcasts on a variety of dierent topics. The project was run asa competition, and it was Year 12 student Harriet Bradnock who

handed in the winning contribution: a beautifully designed posteradvertising the German City of Cologne and its various touristattractions.Impressed by the outstanding quality of the work (and knowingthat the student was heading to Germany to visit the Christmasmarkets), Harriets teacher got in touch with the TouristInformation O ce of Cologne to ask them if they were willing tosponsor a little prize, and indeed they were more than willing tohelp. Having received a copy of the poster, they decided not onlyto surprise Harriet with a small gift but also asked for the posterto be published in Stadt Intern, Colognes magazine for thecitys employees and their families.Harriet and her family visited Cologne over the Christmas period, where Harriet was presented with a range of gifts relating toCologne from the Tourist Information O ce.Harriet said her family enjoyed the visit to Cologne, especiallythe historic buildings, and meeting the local people who wereextremely friendly and welcoming.Well done, Harriet!

Dear Editor,Nearly there..junction at Felbrigg A148/B1436After over eight years of campaigning

by the Steps to Safety group, acknowledgement of the need for aroundabout at this important, frustratingand dangerous junction has been made by

Norfolk County Council Highways Dept.Their costing estimate is 552,000 butthey are unable to meet the entire costsfrom their own funds and are seekinghelp to cover the shortfall, which after

pledges received from local town andparish councils, the district counciland the National Trust, is in the regionof 107,000.In order to safeguard themonies committed by NNC, work needs tostart fairly soon.During the past two years surveysundertaken by the Steps team, both fromthe public and local businesses, showedoverwhelming support for a roundabout atthis junction.

We are now seeking monetary pledges inorder to close the funding gap. We are notasking for money at this stage but pledgeswhich will only be called in when the

project is ready to start. If you would liketo see a roundabout at this junction pleaseconsider pledging now.The easiest way is through our web sitewww. felbriggroundabout.com which hasa lot of information on the project or to [email protected] give this your URGENTCONSIDERATION. If we are unable

to realise these additional funds there isa real possibility the commitment from

    NNC will be withdrawn.Yours sincerely,

Sue ArnoldChair of Steps to Safety CampaignDistrict Councillor for Roughton Ward(Felbrigg, Roughton, Southrepps andThorpe Market)

Inspectors visited the College last month and published theirReport today, giving it an overall rating of good, as well asgood in all the individual aspects that are assessed: examresults, teaching and learning, personal development, behaviourand welfare, and leadership and management. The inspection

was based on the new, tougher inspection framework, which wasintroduced in September 2015.

The Inspection found that, at Paston:All learners are well behaved, motivated and have a positiveattitude to learning, in and outside of lessons. They treat each other and their teachers with respect and valuegreatly the high level of support and guidance provided by theirteachers.Learners benet from teachers high levels of specialist skillsand the passion they have for their subjects. The quality of learners work is high and at times outstanding.Learners make very good progress in their lessons;as a result ahigh proportion of learners achieve their qualications and theirtarget grades.

A high proportion secure places in higher education, includingat Russell Group universities, or gain employment when this istheir intention.

The Report suggested the College would be outstandingwere it not for the small number of students without GCSE

mathematics, where too few learners improve their GCSEmathematics grade while at the college and also because notenough learners, particularly those on academic programmes, have sucient access to work experience placements.

In fact, the College was already working to address these areaswith the appointment of a new GCSE mathematics specialist, who has already hada signicant impact on results, and a

collaboration with the careers specialist Beacon East to improvestudents preparation for work.

    Principal Kevin Grieve said:-

This is an extremely pleasing Report which reects the excellentresults our students have achieved over an extended period oftime. I am very proud of all the hard work put in by students andall the teaching and support sta at the College. I would alsolike to thank parents for their contribution and the support fromeveryone involved with the College. It is a great team eort.

    He also commented that:

Ofsted have not only picked out areas of good and outstandingpractice but provided us with other guidance to get even betterin the future. We know we have a very good College here thatis at the heart of the community, helping students achieve highgrades and progressing on to great opportunities in HE andemployment.

The College is having anOpen Morning on Saturday 6February 2016 from 10.00am

12.30pm. This will providestudents and parents with anopportunity to find out moreand apply for September 2016.

Fellowship of the Royal College of GeneralPractitioners

I have recently been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of GeneralPractitioners (RCGP) and I wanted to share a little about this award and the roleof the RCGP with Crab Tales readers.

The College is the professional membership body and guardian of standards forover 50,000 family doctors in the UK.

The aim of the College is to promote excellence in Primary Care:

    1. By supporting research in Primary Care; much of which is published inthe BJGP (British Journal of General Practice).

    2. By supporting education in Primary Care;virtually all of the course a GPtrainee undertakes is set and monitored by the RCGP. The assessments along theway are a precursor to taking the Membership which is a hurdle which must becrossed before qualifying as a GP. At this stage a GP can have MRCGP after theirname.

    3. By maintaining standards; the RCGP is a driving force in the qualitystandards required by GPs for annual appraisal and5 yearly revalidation. EveryGP must have (and pass) an annual appraisal and every 5 years an extendedappraisal is performed which means he or she has been revalidated. Althoughthis may be a driver for improvement it has been unpopular for a variety ofreasons and many GPs have cited revalidation as a reason for retirement.

    4. By supporting and protecting the Profession of General Practice; at themoment it could be argued that this is the main function of the RCGP. BritishGeneral Practice is under huge pressure from successive cuts in funding, changesto the way in which care is delivered and from cuts to Social Care budgets. TheRCGP has been instrumental in delivering many projects to raise awareness of thisincluding the Put Patients Firstcampaign.

    5. By providing a base in London; the RCGP offi ce is in Euston Square and

has many meeting rooms and accommodation provided (at a cost) for members ofthe College whether in London for business or pleasure.

A Fellowship is awarded to a GP on completion of a long application processsupported by a nominator and two seconders. The applicant has to demonstratethat they have achieved something above and beyond normal general practice. In my case I suspect it was all the work and research I have undergone in the fieldof Respiratory Medicine within Primary Care and helped by my role as a ClinicalDirector for the East of England Respiratory Strategy.

I am honoured and thrilled to be able to put FRCGP after my name fromNovember 20th 2015.
