Introduction

I'm going to assume that you already know how lucrative affiliate marketing can be. I'll also assume that you know what a great way it is to create multiple streams of income, without having to create your own product, handle inventory, or have the hassles of customer service.

In this report, I'll outline a strategy for driving targeted and pre-sold traffic to your affiliate links – with a massive increase in the number of actual sales and commissions.

Throughout the report, we'll be using a case study done on an affiliate product at ClickBank. This product is a membership that gives access to a large gallery of tattoo designs, and lets customers print out a pattern for their tattoo artist.

As the sales page is not the best sales page, this has been a good test for the effectiveness of driving pre-sold traffic to an affiliate link.

Pay Per Click

A quick way to drive traffic through your affiliate link is with an ad at one of the search engines. Called Pay Per Click, these ads – on the right-hand side of the search engine results – charge you a small fee every time an Internet user clicks on them.

Since you only pay for actual clicks through to the affiliate sales page, you only pay for results. You're not paying a huge up-front fee for an ad that may, or may not, drive traffic through your link.

The Cons

One problem with Pay Per Click advertising is that Internet users tend to disregard those results on the right-hand side, in favour of the true (or organic) results on the left. In fact, eye tracking studies have shown that many don't even see the ads, let alone trust them.

Another problem is the lack of pre-selling. With just a short ad, you have no leeway to get the prospect warmed up before they hit the affiliate sales letter. You are simply sending cold traffic and hoping that the affiliate sales letter is strong enough to convert it to sales – which many are not.

With Pay Per Click, you could end up paying a lot for cold traffic that brings you few commissions.

Obviously, it pays to get high ranking in the organic search results on the left-hand side. These results are respected by Internet users, and the site they lead to can be used to pre-sell your prospects and increase those conversions – which leads to more commissions for you.

Classified Ads

One way to get in the high-ranking results is by placing a classified ad at one of the established ad sites, which have developed good standing with the search engines.

Here, you can write good pre-selling copy for the affiliate product ... send the prospect through your affiliate link to the sales page ... and wait for the commission cheques to come.

Classified ads online can be quite inexpensive. In fact, you can get unlimited ads for $9.99 per month.

The Cons

When you place an ad like this, your pre-selling is not as effective because your prospect's “Here comes a sales pitch!” radar is up. They are already resisting your message as just another commercial message. They are guarding themselves against being sold something.

You need to slip under the anti-sales radar with good recommendations.

Articles

Articles are not only great for subtly pre-selling an affiliate product. While they are on the main page of a popular article directory, they are grabbing the attention of the search engines and getting you a high-ranking result.

Your article can be an educating and informative pre-sell for the affiliate product. Like an article in a magazine, it can discuss a problem and consider solutions. Of course, your article will subtly lead to the affiliate product as the ultimate solution.

By the end of the article, it should be a foregone conclusion to go have a closer look at the product. And, at the bottom of the article, you can place a call to action and a link in the author's bio box.

The Cons

Many article directories – including the highest ranking one – have rigid rules about affiliate links that can make it a lot more difficult to send a prospect directly to the affiliate product's sales page.

Instead, you often end up sending them to your website or blog first ... and then on to the sales page. This added step in the process can let a warmed up prospect cool down again – and lose you a bunch of commissions along the way.

Squidoo

Another site that is popular with the search engines is Squidoo. The search engines love the content-rich lenses, and your lens can get a high-ranking listing in the search results.

Here, you can also place informative, pre-selling articles – augmented with images and videos. But, at Squidoo you have much more freedom to place affiliate links throughout your lens.

The rise of video sites – from obscurity at the beginning of 2006 to full-blown popularity just two years later – means that all marketers must start seriously considering this vehicle for delivering their marketing message.

As an affiliate marketer, video is an especially effective tool for you. Many Internet users don't want to come to your website – where you may try to sell them something. However, they feel secure in watching your video at one of the video sites.

Your pre-selling video has to follow the same time-tested, ever-successful AIDA formula as is used in winning sales letters.

Attention

Grab the Internet user's attention with your headline. Make sure the viewer can find you – through the right keyword phrase in your title – and gets a good idea of how watching your video will provide benefit. Give a good reason to click that “Play” button.

Interest

Early in your video, you must grab the viewer's interest – and avoid the deadly “Back” button. Introduce the problem that your video will solve (the solution being your affiliate product) and let the viewer see that you will be providing a solution.

You can build the tension by introducing a few possible “solutions”, and then shooting them down with the bad side effects or other barriers to using that “solution”.

Desire

Finally, introduce the solution ... and ramp up the viewer's desire for the affiliate product, by highlighting the benefits. The more benefits you list, the more the desire builds.

End your video with a strong call to action. Tell the viewer exactly what must be done to get this solution.

Make It Easy

Since giving your viewer a long, convoluted affiliate link will most likely lose you a large percentage of prospects, make it easier for them to use your link. With a redirect, you can send your viewers to a short, east-to-remember URL ... and have a simple redirect send them directly to your affiliate link.

Other sites will visit certain video sites to get videos for their own content. They pick up your embed codes from these video sites, which lets them put your video on their site or blog.

By placing your video on the right video sites, you'll soon find your video picked up by all kinds of sites – including specialty sites in your niche. This gives you fantastic exposure across the Internet, and those niche sites expose your promotion to the target market you want to reach.
