Creating Posters on Endangered Animals Directions: Students will represent four or more animals that are endangered. They must complete their planning sheet called plan_endangered prior to creating their posters. Each animal will be represented by a picture and five or more facts about this animal. There should be two or more reasons given why the animal is endangered.

1. Open up Microsoft Word by choosing Start | All Programs | Microsoft Word 2. Save the word document by choosing File | Save As from the main menu. 3. Navigate to a safe location on your computer and name the document before

clicking the save button.

4. Name the document endangered or give it a name that represents its purpose. 5. Click on the Word Art tool to create a title. If the Word Art tool isn’t showing,

choose Tools | Customize | Toolbars from the main menu. Select the Drawing option. This is how you can access tools if they aren’t showing.

6. When the WordArt Gallery appears, choose a style and then click OK.

7. Type in Endangered Animals. Change the font in the drop down window of the Edit WordArt Text. See below!

Click on the drop down arrow of the Save in: window and choose the location for saving.

8. When the WordArt appears, right click on the word and choose Format WordArt from the options. When the Format WordArt window pops up, choose the Layout tab. Once the Layout tab is selected, you can choose Behind text. You can now move the title anywhere on the document.

9. You can fill it with color by clicking on the WordArt and selecting the drop down menu of the paint bucket. The paint bucket is one of the Drawing tools.

10. You can choose one of the standard colors that will appear once you have clicked on the drop down arrow of the paint bucket or you can choose More Fill Colors if you want a solid color.

11. If you choose Fill Effects, you have a variety of options. You can choose Gradient, Texture, Pattern or Picture from this menu.

12. Experiment with each tab to better understand the effects. If you choose Picture, you need to have an image saved somewhere on your computer. The Picture option tends to look better in bold fonts such as Impact. The thinner fonts aren’t usually as good. When clicking on the Picture tab, choose Select Picture. Once you locate and select the image in your folder, choose OK. The following are examples of different fonts with an image of a cow pattern.

Adding 3D or Drop Shadows: Spice up your poster!

13. Adding 3-D or Shadows Style can be applied to just about anything in Word. To add a 3-D effect, select the object and click on the 3-D Style icon . If this icon isn’t showing, you need to make sure the Drawing tools are selected. See step 5 for further details. To access the Shadow Style, click on the Shadow Style icon . To change the color scheme of the 3-D or Shadow effects, choose either 3-D Settings or Shadow Settings.

Let’s Talk about Images: What’s a poster without images?

14. Using your plan_endangered document, you can get images to compliment the content by searching online.

15. Using one of the search engines, type in the animal name you want to write about.

16. “Killer Whales” was typed in the Google image search. Confirm that Strict SafeSearch is on.

17. Be sure to click on the thumbnail to get a larger picture. If you use the small image, you will lose major quality when you stretch the image.

18. Right click on that image and choose Copy from the drop down menu. 19. Right click in Microsoft Word and choose Paste from the drop down menu. 20. Right click on the image and choose Format Picture from the options. When the

Format Picture window pops up, choose the Layout tab. Once the Layout tab is selected, you can choose Behind text. You can now move the image anywhere on the document.

21. You can resize the image by dragging from any corner toward the center of the image. You would drag away from the center to make it larger. You should avoid making it larger since that will affect the quality of the image.

22. If you want to put the image inside of an AutoShape, you need to save the image into your folder.

23. To save an image, right click on the larger image and choose Save Picture As from the drop down menu.

24. Save the image in a practical folder such as images and be sure to rename it if necessary.

It’s Time for Autoshapes: Autoshapes really compliment the final product

25. Make sure the Draw tool is selected. 26. Click on the drop down arrow of the AutoShapes option.

27. Draw your AutoShape. With the AutoShape selected, click on the Fill Effects option of the Paint Bucket and choose the Picture tab. Choose Select Picture and find your saved image.

Cool choice!

28. Some students choose to draw an irregular shape around the images. To draw an irregular shape, insert the image on your poster by choosing Insert | Picture | From File from the main menu.

29. Locate and select your image where you saved it and choose Insert. 30. Once the image is on your poster, you can use the line tool to start drawing

around the image.

31. While drawing the line, continue to click and curve in the direction you want. You might need to experiment. Once the beginning line and ending line meet, it should look something like this:

32. Once you have placed your animal on the poster, you can insert a text box for your facts.

It’s Time for Text

33. Choose Insert | Text Box from the main menu. 34. If a canvas appears, do not click inside the box. As a matter of fact, you should

prevent this box from appearing by choosing Tools | Options from the main menu. Click on the General tab and make sure there isn’t a check mark next to Automatically create drawing canvas. Click OK when done.

In this case, the curve line was used because you can draw smoother edges. If the edges aren’t allowing you to create smooth curves, make sure the grid is turned off by choosing Grid from the Drawing tool. Make sure Snap objects to grid and Snap objects to other objects are deselected.

See step 27 on inserting images in AutoShapes

Polar Bears: Polar bears are one of the largest predators in the world. Their diet primarily consists of ringed and bearded seals. Their fur is thicker than any other bear. They are endangered because loss of sea ice which affects their hunting. They are also threatened because of illegal poaching.

35. Type complete sentences using your rough sentences you created on your planning sheet titled plan_endangered.

Design Tips: 36. Once you have added all your images with the text boxes, make sure you have

font consistency. In other words, if you use Century Gothic at size 12 for your animal facts, you should do that to all your information. Whatever you use for your title, you should consistently add it to all your titles. For example, a unique, readable font was used for all the titles. Be sure to use a common and readable font for your facts. People need to be able to read your poster.

37. Move your images and text boxes on the poster so that it looks attractive. Leave some space between the borders of the page, or it will get cut off.

Killer Whales: Killer whales are the largest member of the dolphin family. They can live 30 to 50 years in the wild. They eat fish, birds, squid and marine animals. They are endangered because of pollution and chemicals. The pollution leads to diseases and reproduction problems.

Keep adding more images and information until all your animals have been added. Tips will be given on finalizing the posters.

Your images should be inside this space. Don’t clutter and don’t have too much white space.

Notice that the animals and their information are close or touching each other. There is even overlapping, which is fine as long as you don’t cut off too much image. There is some space between other animals and information.

38. If you want to align objects, select them by holding down the shift or Ctrl keys.

39. In this example, the image and the text box are going to be aligned along the top by choosing Draw | Align or Distribute | Align Top from the Drawing tool.

40. The following is an example of aligning along the top.

You might want to align objects along the left, center, right, top, middle or bottom. You can even take 3 or more objects and horizontally or vertically distribute them equally apart.

Final tips: Sometimes you might need to arrange images on top of or behind other images. Follow these steps and you should be fine.

41. Right click on one of the images or objects and order them accordingly. In this case, I right clicked on the image, chose Order | Send to Back.
